Systematic Computation of the Least Unstable Periodic Orbits in Chaotic Attractors

We show that a recently proposed numerical technique for the calculation of unstable periodic orbits in chaotic attractors is capable of finding the least unstable periodic orbits of any given order. This is achieved by introducing a modified dynamical system which has the same set of periodic orbits as the original chaotic system, but with a tuning parameter which is used to stabilize the orbits selectively. This technique is central for calculations using the stability criterion for the truncation of cycle expansions, which provide highly improved convergence of calculations of dynamical averages in generic chaotic attractors. The approach is demonstrated for the Henon attractor.

Turbulence and Multiscaling in the Randomly Forced Navier Stokes Equation

We present an extensive pseudospectral study of the randomly forced Navier-Stokes equation (RFNSE) stirred by a stochastic force with zero mean and a variance $\sim k^{4-d-y}$, where $k$ is the wavevector and the dimension $d = 3$. We present the first evidence for multiscaling of velocity structure functions in this model for $y \geq 4$. We extract the multiscaling exponent ratios $ζ_p/ζ_2$ by using extended self similarity (ESS), examine their dependence on $y$, and show that, if $y = 4$, they are in agreement with those obtained for the deterministically forced Navier-Stokes equation ($3d$NSE). We also show that well-defined vortex filaments, which appear clearly in studies of the $3d$NSE, are absent in the RFNSE.

Statistics of Dissipation and Enstrophy Induced by a Set of Burgers Vortices

Dissipation and enstropy statistics are calculated for an ensemble of modified Burgers vortices in equilibrium under uniform straining. Different best-fit, finite-range scaling exponents are found for locally-averaged dissipation and enstrophy, in agreement with existing numerical simulations and experiments. However, the ratios of dissipation and enstropy moments supported by axisymmetric vortices of any profile are finite. Therefore the asymptotic scaling exponents for dissipation and enstrophy induced by such vortices are equal in the limit of infinite Reynolds number.

Phase slips and phase synchronization of coupled oscillators

The behaviors of coupled oscillators, each of which has periodic motion with random natural frequency in the absence of coupling, are investigated. Some novel collective phenomena are revealed. At the onset of instability of the phase-locking state, simultaneous phase slips of all oscillators and quantized phase shifts in these phase slips are observed. By incresing the coupling, a bifurcation tree from high-dimensional quasiperiodicity to chaos to quasiperiodicity and periodicity is found. Different orders of phase synchronizations of chaotic oscillators and chaotic clusters play the key role for constructing this tree structure.

The Extraction of Anisotropic Contributions in Turbulent Flows

We analyze turbulent velocity signals measured by two probes in the atmosphere, both at the height of 35 meters but displaced by 40 cm nominally orthogonal to the mean wind. Choosing a suitable coordinate system with respect to that of the mean wind, we derive theoretical forms for second order structure functions, and fit them to experimental data. We show that the effect of flow anisotropy is small on the longitudinal component but significant on the transverse component. The data provide an estimate of a universal exponent from among a hierarchy that governs the decay of flow anisotropy with the scale-size.

The Camassa-Holm equations as a closure model for turbulent channel flow

We propose the viscous Camassa-Holm equations as a closure approximation for the Reynolds-averaged equations of the incompressible Navier-Stokes fluid. This approximation is tested on turbulent channel flows with steady mean. Analytical solutions for the mean velocity and the Reynolds shear stress across the entire channel are obtained, showing good agreement with experimental measurements and direct numerical simulations. As Reynolds number varies, these analytical mean velocity profiles form a family of curves whose envelopes are shown to have either power law, or logarithmic behavior, depending on the choice of drag law.

Shock Wave Emissions of a Sonoluminescing Bubble

A single bubble in water is excited by a standing ultrasound wave. At high intensity the bubble starts to emit light. Together with the emitted light pulse, a shock wave is generated in the liquid at collapse time. The time-dependent velocity of the outward-travelling shock is measured with an imaging technique. The pressure in the shock and in the bubble is shown to have a lower limit of 5500 bars. Visualization of the shock and the bubble at different phases of the acoustic cycle reveals previously unobserved dynamics during stable and unstable sonoluminescence.

Finsler Geometric Local Indicator of Chaos for single orbits in the Henon-Heiles hamiltonian

Translating the dynamics of the Henon--Heiles hamiltonian as a geodesic flow on a Finsler manifold, we obtain a local and synthetic Geometric Indicator of Chaos (GIC) for two degrees of freedom continuous dynamical systems. It represents a link between local quantities and asymptotic behaviour of orbits giving a strikingly evident, one-to-one, correspondence between geometry and instability.

Identifying and modelling delay feedback systems

Systems with delayed feedback can possess chaotic attractors with extremely high dimension, even if only a few physical degrees of freedom are involved. We propose a state space reconstruction from time series data of a scalar observable, coming along with a novel method to identify and model such systems, if a single variable is fed back. Making use of special properties of the feedback structure, we can understand the structure of the system by constructing equivalent equations of motion in spaces with dimensions which can be much smaller than the dimension of the chaotic attractor. We verify our method using both numerical and experimental data.

Synchronous Behavior of Two Coupled Biological Neurons

We report experimental studies of synchronization phenomena in a pair of biological neurons that interact through naturally occurring, electrical coupling. When these neurons generate irregular bursts of spikes, the natural coupling synchronizes slow oscillations of membrane potential, but not the fast spikes. By adding artificial electrical coupling we studied transitions between synchrony and asynchrony in both slow oscillations and fast spikes. We discuss the dynamics of bursting and synchronization in living neurons with distributed functional morphology.

Quantum chaos with non-periodic, complex orbits in the Resonant Tunneling Diode

We show that a special type of orbits, which are non-periodic and complex, 'Saddle Orbits' (SOs) describe accurately the quantal and experimental current oscillations in the Resonant Tunneling Diode in tilted fields. This is the first demonstration that one needs to abandon the periodic orbits (POs) paradigm in favour of this new and peculiar type of orbit. The SOs solve the puzzle of broad regions of experimental oscillations where we find no real or complex PO that can explain the data. The SOs succeeds in regimes involving several non-isolated POs, where PO formulas fail.

Universal scaling exponents in shell models of turbulence: Viscous effects are finite-size corrections to scaling

In a series of recent works it was proposed that shell models of turbulence exhibit inertial range scaling exponents that depend on the nature of the dissipative mechanism. If true, and if one could imply a similar phenomenon to Navier-Stokes turbulence, this finding would cast strong doubts on the universality of scaling in turbulence. In this Letter we propose that these ``nonuniversalities'' are just corrections to scaling that disappear when the Reynolds number goes to infinity.

Quantum Lévy Processes and Fractional Kinetics

Exotic stochastic processes are shown to emerge in the quantum evolution of complex systems. Using influence function techniques, we consider the dynamics of a system coupled to a chaotic subsystem described through random matrix theory. We find that the reduced density matrix can display dynamics given by Lévy stable laws. The classical limit of these dynamics can be related to fractional kinetic equations. In particular we derive a fractional extension of Kramers equation.

Phase Ordering and Onset of Collective Behavior in Chaotic Coupled Map Lattices

The phase ordering properties of lattices of band-chaotic maps coupled diffusively with some coupling strength $g$ are studied in order to determine the limit value $g_e$ beyond which multistability disappears and non-trivial collective behavior is observed. The persistence of equivalent discrete spin variables and the characteristic length of the patterns observed scale algebraically with time during phase ordering. The associated exponents vary continuously with $g$ but remain proportional to each other, with a ratio close to that of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation. The corresponding individual values seem to be recovered in the space-continuous limit.

Theoretical Model for the Kramers-Moyal Description of Turbulence Cascades

We derive the Kramers-Moyal equation for the conditional probability density of velocity increments from the theoretical model recently proposed by V.Yakhot [Phys.Rev.E {\bf 57}, 1737 (1998)] in the limit of high Reynolds number limit. We show that the higher order (n>=3) Kramers-Moyal coefficients tends to zero and the velocity increments are evolved by the Fokker-Planck operator. Our result is compatible with the phenomenological descriptions by R.Friedrich and J.Peinke [Phys.Rev.Lett. {\bf 78}, 863 (1997)].

Smooth-filamental transition of active tracer fields stirred by chaotic advection

The spatial distribution of interacting chemical fields is investigated in the non-diffusive limit. The evolution of fluid parcels is described by independent dynamical systems driven by chaotic advection. The distribution can be filamental or smooth depending on the relative strength of the dispersion due to chaotic advection and the stability of the chemical dynamics. We give the condition for the smooth-filamental transition and relate the Hölder exponent of the filamental structure to the Lyapunov exponents. Theoretical findings are illustrated by numerical experiments.

Excitation spectrum of Andreev billiards with a mixed phase space

We present a semiclassical theory for the excitation spectrum of a ballistic quantum dot weakly coupled to a superconductor, for the generic situation that the classical motion gives rise to a phase space containing islands of regularity in a chaotic sea. The density of low-energy excitations is determined by quantum energy scales that are related in a simple way to the morphology of the mixed phase space. An exact quantum mechanical computation for the annular billiard shows good agreement with the semiclassical predictions, in particular for the reduction of the excitation gap when the coupling to the regular regions is maximal.

Periodic Orbit Quantization of Mixed Regular Chaotic Systems

A general technique for the periodic orbit quantization of systems with near-integrable to mixed regular-chaotic dynamics is introduced. A small set of periodic orbits is sufficient for the construction of the semiclassical recurrence function up to, in principle, infinite length. As in our recent work the recurrence signal is inverted by means of a high resolution spectral analyzer (harmonic inversion) to obtain the semiclassical eigenenergies. The method is demonstrated for the hydrogen atom in a magnetic field. To our knowledge this is the first successful application of periodic orbit quantization in the deep mixed regular-chaotic regime.
