Sivers Effect in Dihadron Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

The Sivers effect describes the correlation of the unpolarized parton's transverse momentum with the transverse spin of the nucleon. It manifests as a sine modulation of the cross section for single hadron semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) on a transversely polarized nucleon with the azimuthal angle between the produced hadron's transverse momentum and the nucleon spin ($φ_h$ and $φ_S$, respectively). It has been recently suggested that the Sivers effect can also be measured in two hadron SIDIS process as sine modulations involving the azimuthal angles $φ_T$ and $φ_R$ of both the total and the relative transverse momenta of the hadron pair. Here we present the detailed derivation of the two hadron SIDIS cross section using simple parton-model inspired functional forms for both the parton distribution and the fragmentation functions. We show explicitly that the terms corresponding to the $\sin(φ_R-φ_S)$ and $\sin(φ_T-φ_S)$ modulations are non-zero. Further, we derive the cross section expressions for single hadron production in the two hadron sample. Finally, we employ a modified version of the $\tt{LEPTO}$ Monte Carlo event generator that includes the Sivers effect to estimate the size of single spin asymmetries corresponding to these modulations independent of the formalism developed.

Deconfinement as an entropic self-destruction: a solution for the quarkonium suppression puzzle?

The entropic approach to dissociation of bound states immersed in strongly coupled systems is developed. In such systems, the excitations of the bound state are often delocalized and characterized by a large entropy, so that the bound state is strongly entangled with the rest of the statistical system. If this entropy $S$ increases with the separation $r$ between the constituents of the bound state, $S = S(r)$, then the resulting entropic force $F = T\ {\partial S}/{\partial r}$ ($T$ is temperature) can drive the dissociation process. As a specific example, we consider the case of heavy quarkonium in strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma, where lattice QCD indicates a large amount of entropy associated with the heavy quark pair at temperatures $0.9\ T_c \leq T \leq 1.5\ T_c$ ($T_c$ is the deconfinement temperature); this entropy $S(r)$ grows with the inter-quark distance $r$. We argue that the entropic mechanism results in an anomalously strong quarkonium suppression in the temperature range near $T_c$. This "entropic self-destruction" may thus explain why the experimentally measured quarkonium nuclear modification factor at RHIC (lower energy density) is smaller than at LHC (higher energy density), possibly resolving the "quarkonium suppression puzzle" - all of the previously known mechanisms of quarkonium dissociation operate more effectively at higher energy densities, and this contradicts the data. Moreover, we find that near $T_c$ the entropic force leads to delocalization of the bound hadron states; we argue that this delocalization may be the mechanism underlying deconfinement.

Strong decays of higher excited heavy-light mesons in a chiral quark model

The strong decay properties of the higher excited heavy-light mesons from the first radially excited states up to the first $F$-wave states are studied in a constituent quark model. It is found many missing excitations have good potentials to be found in future experiments for their narrow widths, some of them dominantly decay into the first orbital excitations rather than into ground states. In future observations, one should focus on the decay processes not only into the ground states, but also into the low-lying $P$-wave excitations with $J^P=0^+,1^+$. Furthermore, the nature of the newly observed states $D_J(3000)$, $D_J^*(3000)$ and B(5970) is discussed. It is predicted that $D_J(3000)$ seems to be a partner of $D_{sJ}(3040)$, which could be identified as the high-mass mixed state $|2{P_1}>_L$ ($J^P=1^+$) via the $2^1P_1$-$2^3P_1$ mixing. The $D_J^*(3000)$ resonance seems to favor the $1^3F_4$ state, however, the quantum numbers $J^P=0^+$ and $2^+$ can not be excluded complectly, more experimental observations are needed to determine its $J^P$ values. The B(5970) resonance is most likely to be the $1^3D_3$ with $J^P=3^-$.

Constraints on long-range spin-gravity and monopole-dipole couplings of the proton

Results of a search for a long-range monopole-dipole coupling between the mass of the Earth and rubidium (Rb) nuclear spins are reported. The experiment simultaneously measures the spin precession frequencies of overlapping ensembles of $^{85}$Rb and $^{87}$Rb atoms contained within an evacuated, antirelaxation-coated vapor cell. The nuclear structure of the Rb isotopes makes the experiment particularly sensitive to spin-dependent interactions of the proton. The spin-dependent component of the gravitational energy of the proton in the Earth's field is found to be smaller than $3 \times 10^{-18}~{\rm eV}$, improving laboratory constraints on long-range monopole-dipole interactions by over three orders of magnitude.

Nuclear parton density functions from dijet photoproduction at the EIC

We study the potential of dijet photoproduction measurements at a future electron-ion collider (EIC) to better constrain our present knowledge of the nuclear parton distribution functions. Based on theoretical calculations at next-to-leading order and approximate next-to-next-to-leading order of perturbative QCD, we establish the kinematic reaches for three different EIC designs, the size of the parton density function modifications for four different light and heavy nuclei from He-4 over C-12 and Fe-56 to Pb-208 with respect to the free proton, and the improvement of EIC measurements with respect to current determinations from deep-inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan data alone and when also considering data from existing hadron colliders.

Twist-3 GPDs in Deeply-Virtual Compton Scattering

The sub-leading power of the scattering amplitude for deeply-virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) off the nucleon contains leading-twist and twist-3 generalized parton distributions (GPDs). We point out that in DVCS, at twist-3 accuracy, one cannot address any individual twist-3 GPD. This complication appears on top of the deconvolution issues familiar from the twist-2 DVCS amplitude. Accessible are exclusively linear combinations involving both vector and axial-vector twist-3 GPDs. This implies, in particular, that the (kinetic) orbital angular momentum of quarks can hardly be constrained by twist-3 DVCS observables. Moreover, using the quark-target model, we find that twist-3 GPDs can be discontinuous. The discontinuities however cancel in the DVCS amplitude, which further supports the hypothesis of factorization at twist-3 accuracy.

Experimental study of fusion neutron and proton yields produced by petawatt-laser-irradiated D2-3He or CD4-3He clustering gases

We report on experiments in which the Texas Petawatt laser irradiated a mixture of deuterium or deuterated methane clusters and helium-3 gas, generating three types of nuclear fusion reactions: D(d, 3He)n, D(d, t)p and 3He(d, p)4He. We measured the yields of fusion neutrons and protons from these reactions and found them to agree with yields based on a simple cylindrical plasma model using known cross sections and measured plasma parameters. Within our measurement errors, the fusion products were isotropically distributed. Plasma temperatures, important for the cross sections, were determined by two independent methods: (1) deuterium ion time-of-flight, and (2) utilizing the ratio of neutron yield to proton yield from D(d, 3He)n and 3He(d, p)4He reactions, respectively. This experiment produced the highest ion temperature ever achieved with laser-irradiated deuterium clusters.

Probing Quark-Gluon Interactions with Transverse Polarized Scattering

We have extracted QCD matrix elements from our data on double polarized inelastic scattering of electrons on nuclei. We find the higher twist matrix element \tilde{d_2}, which arises strictly from quark- gluon interactions, to be unambiguously non zero. The data also reveal an isospin dependence of higher twist effects if we assume that the Burkhardt-Cottingham Sum rule is valid. The fundamental Bjorken sum rule obtained from the a0 matrix element is satisfied at our low momentum transfer.

Experimental Determination of In-Medium Cluster Binding Energies and Mott Points in Nuclear Matter

In medium binding energies and Mott points for $d$, $t$, $^3$He and $α$ clusters in low density nuclear matter have been determined at specific combinations of temperature and density in low density nuclear matter produced in collisions of 47$A$ MeV $^{40}$Ar and $^{64}$Zn projectiles with $^{112}$Sn and $^{124}$Sn target nuclei. The experimentally derived values of the in medium modified binding energies are in good agreement with recent theoretical predictions based upon the implementation of Pauli blocking effects in a quantum statistical approach.

The Z^0-tagged jet event asymmetry in heavy-ion collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Tagged jet measurements provide a promising experimental channel to quantify the similarities and differences in the mechanisms of jet production in proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus collisions. We present the first calculation of the transverse momentum asymmetry of Z^0/gamma^*-tagged jet events in sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV reactions at the LHC. Our results combine the O(G_Fα_s^2) perturbative cross sections with the radiative and collisional processes that modify parton showers in the presence of dense QCD matter. We find that a strong asymmetry is generated in central lead-lead reactions that has little sensitivity to the fluctuations of the underlying soft hadronic background. We present theoretical model predictions for its shape and magnitude.

Observation of direct-photon collective flow in sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV Au+Au collisions

The second Fourier component v_2 of the azimuthal anisotropy with respect to the reaction plane was measured for direct photons at midrapidity and transverse momentum (p_T) of 1--13 GeV/c in Au+Au collisions at sqr(s_NN)=200 GeV. Previous measurements of this quantity for hadrons with p_T < 6 GeV/c indicate that the medium behaves like a nearly perfect fluid, while for p_T > 6 GeV/c a reduced anisotropy is interpreted in terms of a path-length dependence for parton energy loss. In this measurement with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider we find that for p_T > 4 GeV/c the anisotropy for direct photons is consistent with zero, as expected if the dominant source of direct photons is initial hard scattering. However, in the p_T < 4 GeV/c region dominated by thermal photons, we find a substantial direct photon v_2 comparable to that of hadrons, whereas model calculations for thermal photons in this kinematic region significantly underpredict the observed v_2.

Proposal for an Electron Antineutrino Disappearance Search Using High-Rate 8Li Production and Decay

This paper introduces a novel, high-intensity source of electron antineutrinos from the production and subsequent decay of 8Li. When paired with an existing ~1 kton scintillator-based detector, this =6.4 MeV source opens a wide range of possible searches for beyond standard model physics via studies of the inverse beta decay interaction. In particular, the experimental design described here has unprecedented sensitivity to electron antineutrino disappearance at $Δm^2\sim$ 1 eV$^2$ and features the ability to distinguish between the existence of zero, one, and two sterile neutrinos.

Direct observation of long-lived isomers in $^{212}$Bi

Long-lived isomers in 212Bi have been studied following 238U projectile fragmentation at 670 MeV per nucleon. The fragmentation products were injected as highly charged ions into the GSI storage ring, giving access to masses and half-lives. While the excitation energy of the first isomer of 212Bi was confirmed, the second isomer was observed at 1478(30) keV, in contrast to the previously accepted value of >1910 keV. It was also found to have an extended Lorentz-corrected in-ring halflife >30 min, compared to 7.0(3) min for the neutral atom. Both the energy and half-life differences can be understood as being due a substantial, though previously unrecognised, internal decay branch for neutral atoms. Earlier shell-model calculations are now found to give good agreement with the isomer excitation energy. Furthermore, these and new calculations predict the existence of states at slightly higher energy that could facilitate isomer de-excitation studies.

Axial Current Generation from Electric Field: Chiral Electric Separation Effect

We study a relativistic plasma containing charged chiral fermions in an external electric field. We show that with the presence of both vector and axial charge densities, the electric field can induce an axial current along its direction and thus cause chirality separation. We call it the Chiral Electric Separation Effect (CESE). On very general basis, we argue that the strength of CESE is proportional to $μ_Vμ_A$ with $μ_V$ and $μ_A$ the chemical potentials for vector charge and axial charge. We then explicitly calculate this CESE conductivity coefficient in thermal QED at leading-log order. The CESE can manifest a new gapless wave mode propagating along the electric field. Potential observable of CESE in heavy-ion collisions is also discussed.

Hard Two-body Photodisintegration of 3He

We have measured cross sections for the gamma+3He->p+d reaction at photon energies of 0.4 - 1.4 GeV and a center-of-mass angle of 90 deg. We observe dimensional scaling above 0.7 GeV at this center-of-mass angle. This is the first observation of dimensional scaling in the photodisintegration of a nucleus heavier than the deuteron.

Ab Initio Calculations of Even Oxygen Isotopes with Chiral Two- Plus Three-Nucleon Interactions

We formulate the In-Medium Similarity Renormalization Group (IM-SRG) for open-shell nuclei using a multi-reference formalism based on a generalized Wick theorem introduced in quantum chemistry. The resulting multi-reference IM-SRG (MR-IM-SRG) is used to perform the first ab initio study of even oxygen isotopes with chiral NN and 3N Hamiltonians, from the proton to the neutron drip lines. We obtain an excellent reproduction of experimental ground-state energies with quantified uncertainties, which is validated by results from the Importance-Truncated No-Core Shell Model and the Coupled Cluster method. The agreement between conceptually different many-body approaches and experiment highlights the predictive power of current chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions, and establishes the MR-IM-SRG as a promising new tool for ab initio calculations of medium-mass nuclei far from shell closures.

Non-Gaussian Fluctuation and Non-Markovian Effect in the Nuclear Fusion Process: Langevin Dynamics Emerging from Quantum Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Macroscopic parameters as well as precise information on the random force characterizing the Langevin type description of the nuclear fusion process around the Coulomb barrier are extracted from the microscopic dynamics of individual nucleons by exploiting the numerical simulation of the improved quantum molecular dynamics. It turns out that the dissipation dynamics of the relative motion between two fusing nuclei is caused by a non-Gaussian distribution of the random force. We find that the friction coefficient as well as the time correlation function of the random force takes particularly large values in a region a little bit inside of the Coulomb barrier. A clear non-Markovian effect is observed in the time correlation function of the random force. It is further shown that an emergent dynamics of the fusion process can be described by the generalized Langevin equation with memory effects by appropriately incorporating the microscopic information of individual nucleons through the random force and its time correlation function.

Quantum Monte Carlo Calculations with Chiral Effective Field Theory Interactions

We present the first quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations with chiral effective field theory (EFT) interactions. To achieve this, we remove all sources of nonlocality, which hamper the inclusion in QMC calculations, in nuclear forces to next-to-next-to-leading order. We perform auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo (AFDMC) calculations for the neutron matter energy up to saturation density based on local leading-order, next-to-leading order, and next-to-next-to-leading order nucleon-nucleon interactions. Our results exhibit a systematic order-by-order convergence in chiral EFT and provide nonperturbative benchmarks with theoretical uncertainties. For the softer interactions, perturbative calculations are in excellent agreement with the AFDMC results. This work paves the way for QMC calculations with systematic chiral EFT interactions for nuclei and nuclear matter, for testing the perturbativeness of different orders, and allows for matching to lattice QCD results by varying the pion mass.
