New phases of finite temperature gauge theory from an extended action

We study the behavior of the order parameter, the phase diagram, and the thermodynamics of exotic phases of finite temperature gauge theory. Lattice simulations were performed in SU(3) and SU(4) with an adjoint Polyakov loop term added to the standard Wilson action. In SU(3), the pattern of Z(3) symmetry breaking in the new phase is distinct from the pattern observed in the deconfined phase. In SU(4), the Z(4) symmetry is spontaneously broken down to Z(2), representing a partially-confined phase. The existence of the new phases is confirmed in analytical calculations of the free energy based on high-temperature perturbation theory.

Pion mass difference from vacuum polarization

We calculate the electromagnetic contribution to the pion mass difference, $Δm^2_π=m^2_{π^+}-m^2_{π^0}$, in the chiral limit through the $VV-AA$ type vacuum polarization using Das-Guralnik-Mathur-Low-Young (DGMLY) sum rule. The calculation is made with two-flavors of dynamical overlap fermions on a $16^3\times 32$ lattice at $a\sim$0.12 fm. The exact chiral symmetry of the overlap fermion is essential to control the systematic error in the difference $VV-AA$. We obtain $Δm_π^2 = 1024(100) {\rm MeV^2}$ combining the lattice data with the perturbative contribution in the high momentum region evaluated by the operator product expansion. By analyzing the momentum dependence of the vacuum polarization, we also obtain pion decay constant $f_π$ and the low-energy constants $L_{10}^r$ in the chiral limit.

Non-perturbative renormalization of four-quark operators and B_K with Schroedinger functional scheme in quenched domain-wall QCD

We present non-perturbative renormalization factors for $ΔS=2$ four-quark operators in quenched domain-wall QCD using the Schroedinger functional method. Non-perturbative renormalization factor for $B_K$ is evaluated at hadronic scale. Combined with the non-perturbative RG running obtained by the Alpha collaboration, our result yields renormalization factor which converts lattice bare $B_K$ to the renormalization group invariant one. We apply the renormalization factor to bare $B_K$ previously obtained by the CP-PACS collaboration with the quenched domain-wall QCD(DWQCD). We compare our result with previous ones obtained by perturbative renormalization factors, different renormalization schemes or different quark actions. We also show that chiral symmetry breaking effects in the renormalization factor are numerically small.

Dynamical Simulations with Highly Improved Staggered Quarks

It is well established that lattice artifacts can be suppressed substantially by the use of SU(3)-projected smeared links in the fermion action. An example is the Highly Improved Staggered Quark action where the ASQ-like effective links are constructed from reunitarized Fat7 links. A general procedure is presented for computing the derivative of the fermion action with respect to the base links (fermion force) - a key component in dynamical simulations using molecular dynamics evolution. The method is iterative and can be applied to actions with arbitrary levels of smearing and reunitarization. The cost of calculating the fermion force is determined for the ASQ action and the HISQ action. Test results show that calculating the HISQ force is about two times more expensive than the ASQ force.

Transport and spectral functions in high-temperature QCD

The current status of transport coefficients in relativistic field theories at high temperature is reviewed. I contrast weak coupling results obtained using kinetic theory/diagrammatic techniques with strong coupling results obtained using gauge/gravity duality, and describe the recent developments in extracting transport coefficients and spectral functions from lattice QCD simulations. The fate of quarkonium at high temperature as seen from the lattice is briefly mentioned as well.

Universality and Scaling at the chiral transition in two-flavor QCD at finite temperature

The order of the phase transition in finite-temperature QCD with two degenerate light quarks is still an open problem and corresponds to the last question mark in the zero-density phase diagram of QCD. We argue that establishing the nature of the transition in this case is also a crucial test for numerical simulations of lattice QCD, allowing precise estimates of possible systematic errors related e.g. to the choice of fermion-simulation algorithm or of discretized formulation for fermions.

On the conformal anomaly of k-strings

We discuss the long distance behaviour of the flux tube associated to baryon vertices and argue that, if the gauge system admits stable k-strings, the conformal field theory describing this string in the IR has conformal anomaly c=(d-2)σ_k/σ, where σ_k is the k-string tension and σthat of the fundamental representation. We check this result in a 3D Z_4 gauge model at finite temperature, where a string effect directly related to "c" can be clearly identified.

Interactive Visualization Package for 4D Lattice Field Theories

Recent interest in exploring local vacuum structure of QCD through the properties of the eigenmodes of the lattice Dirac operators rises again the challenge to visualize four-dimensional objects and structures which appear in lattice field theories. In spite of complex and powerful commercial visualization software packages on the market, there are reasons to develop Interactive Visualization Package (IVP). We believe that an apprehension of the complex structures is possible only through the interactive approach, with the user being able to manipulate data representations and slices through the lattice in real-time. Further insight should also be gained by an interactive parallel examination of different physical quantities, e.g. eigenmode density with topological charge or action densities. Finally, thanks to constantly falling hardware prices, IVP makes it possible to use almost any Linux PC as a visualization tool for research in lattice field theory.

Taste violations in the scalar correlator in mixed action simulations

We study the behavior of the isovector scalar correlator, which is particularly sensitive to lattice artifacts, using domain-wall valence quarks on a staggered sea (generated by the MILC collaboration). We analyze this according to the prediction from chiral perturbation theory determined by Prelovsek, which indicates that the leading unitarity violations come from taste breaking effects. We show that our data behaves in the way predicted by Prelovsek, thus verifying that the largest contribution to the violations of unitarity which arise at finite lattice spacing can be described by the mixed-action chiral perturbation theory.

Lattice Results for Vector Meson Couplings and Parton Distribution Amplitudes

We present results for the couplings of light vector mesons to vector and tensor currents and on the low moments of the light-cone distribution amplitudes of the pion and kaon. The calculations are performed on the RBC and UKQCD collaborations' ensembles generated with the Iwasaki gauge action and with 2+1 flavours of domain wall fermions. The (preliminary) results for the ratios of the couplings of the vector meson to the vector and tensor currents (f_V and f^T_V respectively) in the MSbar scheme at 2GeV are: f_ρ^T/f_ρ=0.681(20); f_{K^\ast}^T/f_{K^\ast}=0.712(11) and f_ϕ^T/f_ϕ=0.751(9). For the first moment of the kaon's distribution amplitude we find (in the same scheme and at the same scale) _K=0.029(2) and for the second moment _π=0.28(3) and _K=0.27(2).

Light meson spectrum with $N_f=2$ dynamical overlap fermions

We present numerical simulation of QCD with two dynamical quark flavors described by the overlap fermion action on a $16^3\times 32\times (0.12 {\rm fm})^4$ lattice. We calculate pseudo-scalar masses and decay constants and investigate their chiral properties. We test the consistency of our data with the two-loop chiral perturbation theory predictions, which should also be valid at finite lattice spacings because of the exact chiral symmetry, including the finite size effects.

Screening masses of mesons in 2+1 flavour QCD

We present results for screening masses of light and strange mesons in 2+1 flavour QCD using improved (p4fat3) staggered fermions on 6x24^3 lattices. We have studied the screening masses of scalar, pseudo-scalar, vector and axial-vector mesons along the line of constant physics, determined by a pion mass ~220 MeV and a kaon mass ~500 MeV. In order to investigate the cut-off and volume dependencies we have also performed studies of the meson screening correlators in the non-interacting theory using the p4 and the standard staggered discretizations.

Renormalisation of quark bilinears with Nf=2 Wilson fermions and tree-level improved gauge action

We present results for the renormalisation constants of bilinear quark operators, using the Nf=2 twisted mass Wilson action at maximal twist (which guarantees automatic O(a) improvement) and the tree-level Symanzik improved gauge action. The scale-independent renormalisation constants are computed with a new method, which makes use of both standard twisted mass and Osterwalder-Seiler fermions. Moreover, the results from an RI-MOM calculation are presented for both scale independent and scale dependent renormalisation constants.

QCD symmetries in excited hadrons

Recent developments for chiral and $U(1)_A$ restorations in excited hadrons are reviewed. We emphasize predictions of the chiral symmetry restoration scenario for axial charges and couplings to Goldstone bosons. Using very general chiral symmetry arguments it is shown that strict chiral restoration in a given excited nucleon forbids its decay into the $N π$ channel. We confront this prediction with the $N^*Nπ$ coupling constants extracted from the decay widths and observe a 100 % correlation of these data with the spectroscopic parity doublet patterns. These results suggest that the lowest approximate chiral parity doublet is the $N(1440) - N(1535)$ pair. In the meson sector we discuss predictions of the chiral symmetry restoration for still missing states and a signature of the higher symmetry observed in new $\bar p p$ data. We conclude with the exactly solvable chirally symmetric and confining model that can be considered as a generalization of the 1+1 dimensional 't Hooft model to 4 dimensions. Complete spectra of $\bar q q$ mesons demonstrate a fast chiral restoration with increasing $J$ and a slow one with increasing $n$.

Perturbative determination of $c_{SW}$ with Symanzik improved gauge action and stout smearing

We determine the improvement factor $c_{SW}$ in one-loop lattice perturbation theory for the plaquette and Symanzik improved gauge actions. The fermionic action is ${\mathcal{O}(a)}$ clover improved with one-time stout smearing. $c_{SW}$ is derived from the one-loop correction to the quark-quark-gluon vertex in the off-shell regime. We give a first numerical value for the one-loop contribution to the non gauge-invariant improvement coefficient $c_{NGI}$ for the quark field using the plaquette action. A discussion of mean field improvement is included.

Schwinger model simulations with dynamical overlap fermions

We present simulation results for the 2-flavour Schwinger model with dynamical overlap fermions. In particular we apply the overlap hypercube operator at seven light fermion masses. In each case we collect sizable statistics in the topological sectors 0 and 1. Since the chiral condensate Sigma vanishes in the chiral limit, we observe densities for the microscopic Dirac spectrum, which have not been addressed yet by Random Matrix Theory (RMT). Nevertheless, by confronting the averages of the lowest eigenvalues in different topological sectors with chiral RMT in unitary ensemble we obtain -- for the very light fermion masses -- values for Sigma that follow closely the analytical predictions in the continuum.

The nature of the finite temperature QCD transition as a function of the quark masses

The finite temperature QCD transition for physical quark masses is a crossover. For smaller quark masses a first-order phase transition is expected. Using Symanzik improved gauge and stout improved fermion action for 2+1 flavour staggered QCD we give estimates/bounds for the phase line separating the first-order region from the crossover one. The calculations are carried out on two different lattice spacings. Our conclusion for the critical mass is $m_0 \lesssim 0.07 \cdot m_{phys}$ for $N_T=4$ and $m_0 \lesssim 0.12 \cdot m_{phys}$ for $N_T=6$ lattices.

Lower dimensional Yang-Mills theory as a laboratory to study the infrared regime

Lattice studies of the infrared regime of gauge theories are complicated by the required extensive limits, the performed gauge fixing and the demand for high statistics. Using a general power counting scheme for the infrared limit of Landau gauge SU(N) Yang-Mills theory in arbitrary dimensions we show that the infrared behavior of Greens functions is both qualitatively and quantitatively similar in two, three and four spacetime dimensions. Therefore, lower dimensional lattice simulations can serve as a simplified laboratory to analyze the presently applied approximations and to obtain first results for higher correlation functions.
