Conformal structures with explicit ambient metrics and conformal G_2 holonomy

Given a generic 2-plane field on a 5-dimensional manifold we consider its (3,2)-signature conformal metric [g] as defined in math.DG/0406400. Every conformal class [g] obtained in this way has very special conformal holonomy: it must be contained in the split-real-form of the exceptional group G_2. In this note we show that for special 2-plane fields on 5-manifolds the conformal classes [g] have the Fefferman-Graham ambient metrics which, contrary to the general Fefferman-Graham metrics given as a formal power series, can be written in an explicit form. We propose to study the relations between the conformal G_2-holonomy of metrics [g] and the possible pseudo-Riemannian G_2-holonomy of the corresponding ambient metrics.

Constant scalar curvature Kaehler surfaces and parabolic polystability

A complex ruled surface admits an iterated blow-up encoded by a parabolic structure with rational weights. Under a condition of parabolic stability, one can construct a Kaehler metric of constant scalar curvature on the blow-up according to math.DG/0412405. We present a generalization of this construction to the case of parabolically polystable ruled surfaces. Thus we can produce numerous examples of Kaehler surfaces of constant scalar curvature with circle or toric symmetry.

The Scalar Curvature Deformation Equation on Locally Conformally Flat Manifolds

We study the equation $Δ_g u -\frac{n-2}{4(n-1)}R(g)u+Ku^p=0 (1+ζ\leq p \leq \frac{n+2}{n-2})$ on locally conformally flat compact manifolds $(M^n,g)$. We prove the following: (i) When the scalar curvature $R(g)>0$ and the dimension $n \geq 4$, under suitable conditions on $K$, all positive solutions $u$ have uniform upper and lower bounds; (ii) When the scalar curvature $R(g)\equiv 0$ and $n \geq 5$, under suitable conditions on $K$, all positive solutions $u$ with bounded energy have uniform upper and lower bounds. We also give an example to show that the energy bound condition for the uniform estimates in math.DG/0602636 is necessary.

Direct image for multiplicative and relative $K$-theories from transgression of the families index theorem, part 2

This is the sequel of the first part math.DG/0611281. Here, the procedure of transgressing the families index theorem (the so-called $η$-form) is adapted to take in account the case of Dirac type operators with kernels of varying dimension. The constructed form is then used to define the direct image under proper submersions of the ``free multiplicative'' $K$-theory which was defined in the first part, the behaviour of the characteristic classes on free multiplicative $K$-theory under submersion is studied. Some universal caracterisation of the forms is provided. Finally, combining our result with Bismut and Lott's results on direct images of flat vector bundles yields a ``Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch'' theorem for Nadel-Chern-Simons classes on relative $K$-theory for flat vector bundles which was defined in the first part.

Equivariant and Bott-type Seiberg-Witten Floer Homology: Part I

We construct Bott-type and equivariant Seiberg-Witten Floer homology and cohomology for 3-manifolds, in particular rational homology spheres, and prove their diffeomorphism invariance. This paper is a revised version of math.DG/9701010. Some typos are removed.

Absolute torsion and eta-invariant

In a recent joint work with V. Turaev (cf. math.DG/9810114) we defined a new concept of combinatorial torsion which we called absolute torsion. Compared with the classical Reidemeister torsion it has the advantage of having a well-defined sign. Also, the absolute torsion is defined for arbitrary orientable flat vector bundles, and not only for unimodular ones, as is classical Reidemeister torsion. In this paper I show that the sign behavior of the absolute torsion, under a continuous deformation of the flat bundle, is determined by the eta-invariant and the Pontrjagin classes.

On boundary value problems for Dirac type operators. I. Regularity and self-adjointness

In a series of papers, we will develop systematically the basic spectral theory of (self-adjoint) boundary value problems for operators of Dirac type. We begin in this paper with the characterization of (self-adjoint) boundary conditions with optimal regularity, for which we will derive the heat asymptotics and index theorems in subsequent publications. Along with a number of new results, we extend and simplify the proofs of many known theorems. Our point of departure is the simple structure which is displayed by Dirac type operators near the boundary. Thus our proofs are given in an abstract functional analytic setting, generalizing considerably the framework of compact manifolds with boundary. The results of this paper have been announced in math.DG/9902100

Twisted index theory on good orbifolds, I: noncommutative Bloch theory

This paper, together with Part II, expands the results of math.DG/9803051. In Part I we study the twisted index theory of elliptic operators on orbifold covering spaces of compact good orbifolds, which are invariant under a projective action of the orbifold fundamental group. We apply these results to obtain qualitative results on real and complex hyperbolic spaces in 2 and 4 dimensions, related to generalizations of the Bethe-Sommerfeld conjecture and the Ten Martini Problem, on the spectrum of self adjoint elliptic operators which are invariant under a projective action of a discrete cocompact group.

Integrable geodesic flows on the suspensions of toric automorphisms

For any toric automorphism with only real eigenvalues a Riemannian metric with an integrable geodesic flow on the suspension of this automorphism is constructed. A qualitative analysis of such a flow on a three-solvmanifold constructed by the authors in math.DG/9905078 is done. This flow is an example of the geodesic flow, which has vanishing Liouville entropy and, moreover, is integrable but has positive topological entropy. The authors also discuss some open problems on integrability of geodesic flows and related subjects.

Yang-Mills-Higgs theory for symplectic fibrations

Our aim in this work is to study a system of equations which generalises at the same time the vortex equations of Yang-Mills-Higgs theory and the holomorphicity equation in Gromov theory of pseudoholomorphic curves. We extend some results and definitions from both theories to a common setting. We introduce a functional generalising Yang-Mills-Higgs functional, whose minima coincide with the solutions to our equations. We prove a Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence allowing to study the solutions of the equations in the Kaehler case. We give a structure of smooth manifold to the set of (gauge equivalence classes of) solutions to (a perturbation of) the equations (the so-called moduli space). We give a compactification of the moduli space, generalising Gromov's compactification of the moduli of holomorphic curves. Finally, we use the moduli space to define (under certain conditions) invariants of compact symplectic manifolds with a Hamiltonian almost free action of S^1. These invariants generalise Gromov-Witten invariants. This is the author's Ph.D. Thesis. A chapter of it is contained in the paper math.DG/9901076. After submitting his thesis in April 1999, the author knew that K. Cieliebak, A. R. Gaio and D. Salamon had also arrived (from a different point of view) at the same equations, and had developed a very similar programme (see math.SG/9909122).

A Kato-Yau inequality for harmonic spinors and decay estimate for eigenspinors

We show that harmonic spinors obey a strengthened version of the well-known pointwise Kato inequality for sections of a vector bundle with a connection. We then prove a decay estimate for eigenspinors using this Kato-Yau estimate and resulting differential inequality. We briefly describe some applications to gauge theory---specifically to integral estimates which are used when gluing and ungluing PU(2) monopoles (math.DG/9907107).

Linear stability of compact shrinking Ricci solitons

In this paper, we continue investigating the second variation of Perelman's $ν$-entropy for compact shrinking Ricci solitons. In particular, we improve some of our previous work in "H.-D. Cao and M. Zhu, Math. Ann. 353 (2012), No. 3, 747-763", as well as the more recent work in "M. Mehrmohamadi and A. Razavi, arXiv:2104.08343", and obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a compact shrinking Ricci soliton to be linearly stable. Our work also extends similar results of Hamilton, Ilmanen and the first author in "arXiv:math.DG/0404165" (see also "H.-D. Cao and C. He, J. Reine Angew. Math. 2015 (2015), no. 709, 229-246.") for positive Einstein manifolds to the compact shrinking Ricci soliton case.

Conformally invariant powers of the Laplacian, Q-curvature, and tractor calculus

We describe an elementary algorithm for expressing, as explicit formulae in tractor calculus, the conformally invariant GJMS operators due to C.R. Graham et alia. These differential operators have leading part a power of the Laplacian. Conformal tractor calculus is the natural induced bundle calculus associated to the conformal Cartan connection. Applications discussed include standard formulae for these operators in terms of the Levi-Civita connection and its curvature and a direct definition and formula for T. Branson's so-called Q-curvature (which integrates to a global conformal invariant) as well as generalisations of the operators and the Q-curvature. Among examples, the operators of order 4, 6, and 8 and the related Q-curvatures are treated explicitly. The algorithm exploits the ambient metric construction of Fefferman and Graham and includes a procedure for converting the ambient curvature and its covariant derivatives into tractor calculus expressions. This is partly based on "Standard tractors and the conformal ambient metric construction" (A. Cap and A.R. Gover, math.DG/0207016), where the relationship of the normal standard tractor bundle to the ambient construction is described.

Toric G_2 and Spin(7) holonomy spaces from gravitational instantons and other examples

Non-compact G_2 holonomy metrics that arise from a T^2 bundle over a hyper-Kahler space are discussed. These are one parameter deformations of the metrics studied by Gibbons, Lu, Pope and Stelle in hep-th/0108191. Seven-dimensional spaces with G_2 holonomy fibered over the Taub-Nut and the Eguchi-Hanson gravitational instantons are found, together with other examples. By considering the Apostolov-Salamon theorem math.DG/0303197, we construct a new example that, still being a T^2 bundle over hyper-Kahler, represents a non trivial two parameter deformation of the metrics studied in hep-th/0108191. We then review the Spin(7) metrics arising from a T^3 bundle over a hyper-Kahler and we find two parameter deformation of such spaces as well. We show that if the hyper-Kahler base satisfies certain properties, a non trivial three parameter deformations is also possible. The relation between these spaces with the half-flat structures and almost G_2 holonomy spaces is briefly discussed.

Twisted higher index theory on good orbifolds, II: fractional quantum numbers

This paper is the continuation of Part I, expanding previous results of math.DG/9803051. This paper uses techniques in noncommutative geometry as developed by Alain Connes in order to study the twisted higher index theory of elliptic operators on orbifold covering spaces of compact good orbifolds, which are invariant under a projective action of the orbifold fundamental group. We also compute the range of the higher cyclic traces on $K$-theory for cocompact Fuchsian groups, which is then applied to determine the range of values of the Connes-Kubo Hall conductance in the discrete model of the quantum Hall effect on the hyperbolic plane. The new phenomenon that we observe in our case is that the Connes-Kubo Hall conductance has plateaux at integral multiples of a fractional valued topological invariant, namely the orbifold Euler characteristic. The set of possible fractions has been determined, and is compared with recently available experimental data.

Structures de contact en dimension trois et bifurcations des feuilletages de surfaces

The main purpose of this article is to classify contact structures on some 3-manifolds, namely lens spaces, most torus bundles over a circle, the solid torus, and the thickened torus T^2 x [0,1]. This classification completes earlier work (by Etnyre [math.DG/9812065], Eliashberg, Kanda, Makar-Limanov, and the author) and results from the combination of two techniques: surgery, which produces many contact structures, and tomography, which allows one to analyse a contact structure given a priori and to create from it a combinatorial image. The surgery methods are based on a theorem of Y. Eliashberg -- revisited by R. Gompf [math.GT/9803019] -- and produces holomorphically fillable contact structures on closed manifolds. Tomography theory, developed in parts 2 and 3, draws on notions introduced by the author and yields a small number of possible models for contact structures on each of the manifolds listed above.

Ricci flow on Kähler-Einstein manifolds

In our previous paper math.DG/0010008, we develop some new techniques in attacking the convergence problems for the Kähler Ricci flow. The one of main ideas is to find a set of new functionals on curvature tensors such that the Ricci flow is the gradient like flow of these functionals. We successfully find such functionals in case of Kaehler manifolds. On Kähler-Einstein manifold with positive scalar curvature, if the initial metric has positive bisectional curvature, we prove that these functionals have a uniform lower bound, via the effective use of Tian's inequality. Consequently, we prove the following theorem: Let $M$ be a Kähler-Einstein manifold with positive scalar curvature. If the initial metric has nonnegative bisectional curvature and positive at least at one point, then the Kähler Ricci flow will converge exponentially fast to a Kähler-Einstein metric with constant bisectional curvature. Such a result holds for Kähler-Einstein orbifolds.
