Study of the near threshold total cross sesctions for the quasi-free pn-->pn eta prime reaction with the COSY-11 detector

The measurement of the quasi-free production of the eta prime meson has been carried out at the COSY-11 detection setup using a proton beam and a deuteron cluster target. The energy dependence of the cross section is extracted using a fixed proton beam momentum of p_beam=3.35 GeV/c and exploiting the Fermi momenta of nucleons inside deuterons. The data cover a range of centre-of-mass excess energies from 0 to 24 MeV. Due to the low statistics at the present stage only upper limits for the cross sections could be extracted. In this article we focus on the functioning and efficiency determination of the neutron detector.

Clustering features of $^{14}$N nuclei in relativistic multifragmentation process

Progress in the study of the peripheral nuclear interactions in $^{14}N$ dissociation at $2.1A GeV$ in nuclear emulsion is outlined. The leading role of the multiple fragmentations in the most peripheral nucleus interactions is discussed. The production of unusual states, for which a regrouping of nucleons beyond the $α$-particle clustering is needed, is identified for this channel.

Pion and photon production in heavy ion collisions

Measurement of neutral pions and direct photons are closely connected experimentally, on the other hand they probe quite different aspects of relativistic heavy ion collisions. In this short review of the $π^0$ results from the PHENIX experiment at RHIC our focus is on the $ϕ$-integrated nuclear modification factor, its energy and system size dependence, and the impact of these results on parton energy loss models. We also discuss the current status of high $p_T$ and thermal direct photon measurements both in $p$ + $p$ and Au+Au collisions. Recognizing the advantages of measuring not only the "signal", but also all the "references" needed for proper interpretation in the same experiments (with same or similar systematics) we argue that RHIC should regularly include $d$ + A and even $d$ + $d$ collisions into its system size and energy scan.

Correlation Probes of a QCD Critical Point

Critical opalescence is a characteristic experimental signature of a second order phase transition in solid state physics. A new, experimentally accessible measure of opacity and of attenuation length in heavy ion reactions is suggested, as a combination of HBT radii and nuclear modification factors. This opacity is maximal when $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$, the system size and centrality correspond to the critical point of QCD. To characterize the phase transition at this critical point, the critical exponent of the correlation function can be determined by measuring the Lévy index of stability of the Bose-Einstein or HBT correlations. The exponent of the correlation length can be determined from fits to the multiplicity distribution in various pseudorapidity intervals, also as a function of colliding energy, system size, centrality and (chemical) freeze-out temperature. These two critical exponents determine the remaining four critical exponents and the universality class of this second order phase transition. As a control experiment, the determination of the critical exponent of the specific heat capacity is proposed, from event-by-event fluctuation measurements. To measure opacity precisely, well calibrated high transverse momentum probes are needed, such as given by the excitation function of $γ$ + jet correlation functions.

Search for eta-mesic helium using the WASA-AT-COSY detector

We conduct a search for the 4He-eta bound state with the WASA-at-COSY facility via the measurement of the excitation function for the reaction dd->3Heppi-. In first experiment performed in June 2008, we used COSY deuteron beam with a slowly ramped beam momentum corresponding to a variation of the excess energy for the 4He-eta system from -51.4 MeV to 22 MeV. Here we report on the status of the measurement and the data evaluation.

Dielectron production in pp and dp collisions at 1.25 GeV/u with HADES

Inclusive production of e+e--pairs in pp and dp collisions at a kinetic beam energy of 1.25 GeV/u has been studied with the HADES spectrometer. In the latter case, the main goal was to obtain data on pair emission in quasi-free np collisions. To select this particular reaction channel the HADES experimental setup was extended with a Forward Wall hodoscope, which allowed to register spectator protons. Here, the measured invariant mass distributions demonstrate a strong enhancement of the pair yield for M > 140 MeV/c2 in comparison to pp data.

Some properties of the central heavy ion collisions

Some experimental results are discussed in connection with the properties of the central heavy ion collisions. These experiments indicate the regime changes and saturation at some values of the centrality. This phenomenon is considered to be a signal of the percolation cluster formation in heavy ion collisions at high energies. Keywords: heavy ion collisions, theoretical models, centrality, phase transition.

Comparison of experimental and theoretical results to define centrality of heavy ion collisions

Using the simulation data coming from the cascade model, we have studied the behavior of event number as a function of impact parameter-b and a number of all charged particles- Nch for light and heavy nuclei at different energies. We have seen that for light nuclei, a number of all charged particles-Nch could be used to fix the centrality. But for heavy nuclei we have got strong initial energy and mass dependences and the results for impact parameter factor dependences and ones for a number of all charged particles differ. So for heavy nuclei, a number of charged particles-Nch could not be use to fix the centrality. Key words: cascade model; centrality, light nuclei, heavy nuclei

Energy Loss and Medium Response via Two Particle Correlations in Heavy Ion Collisions

In these proceedings, pair correlations between high pT final-state particles in central and mid-central Au+Au are presented as a function of trigger-angle with respect to the reaction plane. Jet tomography results like these add another dimension of experimental discrimination to energy loss calculations and initial state geometric descriptions. The observed increasing away-side suppression with respect to the nuclear overlap demonstrate that back-to-back production at high pT in mid-central collisions is not dominated by unmodified production produced tangentially to the nuclear overlap. Furthermore, these results present a challenge to theories that predict only a weak variation due to angle with respect to the reaction plane.

Hadronic transport approach to neutrino nucleus scattering: the Giessen BUU model and its validation

We present the GiBUU model for neutrino nucleus scattering: assuming impulse approximation, this reaction is treated as a two step process. In the initial state step, the neutrinos interact with bound nucleons. In the final state step, the outgoing particles of the initial reaction are propagated through the nucleus and undergo final state interactions. In this contribution, we focus on the validation of the initial and final state interaction treatment in GiBUU using experimental data for pion-nucleus, photon-nucleus and electron-nucleus scattering.

Isospin dependence of the eta meson production in hadronic collisions

Based on recent COSY-11 results of measurements of total cross sections for the quasi-free pn-->pn eta reaction we determine the isospin I=0 component of the total cross section for the NN-->NN eta reaction down to the threshold. We show that the energy dependence of the total cross section ratios {σ_{I=0}(pn-->pn eta)}/{σ(pp-->pp eta)} and σ_{I=0}(pn-->pn eta)}/{σ(pn-->d eta)} can be described using the Faldt and Wilkin analitical parametrization of the nucleon-nucleon final state interaction.

Neutrino oscillations, global analysis and theta(13)

At the previous Venice meeting NO-VE 2008, we discussed possible hints in favor of a nonzero value for the unknown neutrino mixing angle theta(13), emerging from the combination of solar and long-baseline reactor data, as well as from the combination of atmospheric, CHOOZ and long-baseline accelerator nu_mu->nu_mu data. Recent MINOS 2009 results in the nu_mu->nu_e appearance channel also seem to support such hints. A combination of all current oscillation data provides, as preferred range, sin^2 theta(13) = 0.02 +- 0.01 (1σ). We review several issues raised by such hints in the last year, and comment on their possible near-future improvements and tests.

Direct photon-charged hadron coincidence measurements in STAR

The multiplicities of charged particle with transverse momentum (3 $<$ $p_T^{h^{\pm}}$ $<$ 16 $\mathrm GeV/c$) and pseudorapidity ($\midη\mid$ $\leq$ 1.0) associated with direct photons and $π^{0}$ of high transverse momentum (8 $<$ $p_T^{γ, π^{0}}$ $<$ 16 $\mathrm GeV$) at mid-rapidity ($\midη\mid$ $\leq$ 0.9) have been measured over a broad range of centralities for $Au+Au$ collisions and $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 $\mathrm GeV$ in the STAR experiment. A transverse shower-shape analysis in the STAR Barrel Electromagnetic Calorimeter Shower Maximum Detector is used to discriminate between the shower of single photon and that of photons from the decays of high $p_T$ $π^{0}$s. The relative azimuthal positions of the associated particles with respect to the trigger particle are constructed, and the associated charged hadron yields per direct $γ$ are extracted. An agreement is observed between the measured suppression for direct $γ$-trigger associated-particle yields in $Au+Au$ compared to that in $p+p$ and theoretical calculations, although the uncertainties are large. Within the current uncertainties, the suppression is similar to the previously observed suppression in single-particle yields as well as in hadron-triggered associated-particle yields.

Results from PHENIX at RHIC

Results from PHENIX at RHIC in p-p and Au+Au collisions are presented from the perspective of measurements in p-p collisions at the CERN ISR which serve as a basis for many of the techniques used. Notable results include the equality of the suppression of inclusive pi0 and direct electrons (from the decay of heavy quarks) in the range of transverse momentuum 4 < pT < 9 GeV/c in central Au+Au collisions. This result appears to strongly disfavor the explanation of suppression as due to radiative energy loss of partons traversing a Quark Gluon Plasma but opens up a fundamental discussion of how Fermions get mass, whether all six quarks are nearly massless in a QGP and how to test this.
