Extended Einstein-Maxwell model

A self-consistent extended Einstein-Maxwell model for relativistic non-stationary polarizable-magnetizable anisotropic media is presented. Based on the analogy with relativistic extended irreversible (transient) thermodynamics, the extended constitutive equations for the electrodynamics of continua are formulated phenomenologically, the convective derivatives of the first, second, etc. orders being taken into account. The master equations for the gravity field contain a modified effective (symmetric) stress-energy tensor of the electromagnetic field in a material medium, the use of this tensor being motivated both by historical analogies and direct variational procedure. By way of example we consider the exact solution of the extended Einstein-Maxwell model, describing the isotropic cosmological model with hidden non-vanishing electromagnetic field, electric polarization and magnetization.

Corrections to the running of gauge couplings due to quantum gravity

Concerning the gravitational corrections to the running of gauge couplings two different results were reported. Some authors claim that gravitational correction at the one-loop level indicates an interesting effect of universal gravitational decreasing of gauge couplings, that is, gravitational correction works universally in the direction of asymptotic freedom no matter how the gauge coupling behaves without gravity, while others reject the presence of gravitational correction at the one-loop level at all. Being these calculations done in the framework of an effective field theory approach to general relativity, we wanted to draw attention to a recently discovered profound quantum-gravitational effect of space-time dimension running that inevitably affects the running of gauge couplings. The running of space-time dimension indicating gradual reduction of dimension as one gets into smaller scales acts on the coupling constants in the direction of asymptotic freedom and therefore in any case manifests the plausibility of this quantum-gravitational effect. Curiously enough, the results are also in perfect quantitative agreement with those of Robinson and Wilczek.

Stability of Reissner Nordstr$\ddot{o}$m Black Hole

The singularity of the solutions obtained before in the teleparallel theory of gravitation is studied. Also the stability of these solutions is studied using the equations of geodesic deviation. The condition of stability is obtained. From this condition the stability of Schwarzschild solution can be obtained.

On Braid Excitations in Quantum Gravity

We propose a new notation for the states in some models of quantum gravity, namely 4-valent spin networks embedded in a topological three manifold. With the help of this notation, equivalence moves, namely translations and rotations, can be defined, which relate the projections of diffeomorphic embeddings of a spin network. Certain types of topological structures, viz 3-strand braids as local excitations of embedded spin networks, are defined and classified by means of the equivalence moves. This paper formulates a mathematical approach to the further research of particle-like excitations in quantum gravity.

Generation and detection of gravitational waves at microwave frequencies by means of a superconducting two-body system

The 2-body system of a superconducting sphere levitated in the magnetic field generated by a persistent current in a superconducting ring, can possibly convert gravitational waves into electromagnetic waves, and vice versa. Faraday's law of induction implies that the time-varying distance between the sphere and the ring caused by the tidal force of an incident gravitational wave induces time-varying electrical currents, which are the source of an electromagnetic wave at the same frequency as the incident gravitational wave. At sufficiently low temperatures, the internal degrees of freedom of the superconductors are frozen out because of the superconducting energy gap, and only external degrees of freedom, which are coupled to the radiation fields, remain. Hence this wave-conversion process is loss-free and therefore efficient, and by time-reversal symmetry, so is the reverse process. A Hertz-like experiment at microwave frequencies should therefore be practical to perform. This would open up observations of the gravitational-wave analog of the Cosmic Microwave Background from the extremely early Big Bang, and also communications directly through the interior of the Earth.

Dark energy and 3-manifold topology

We show that the differential-geometric description of matter by differential structures of spacetime leads to a unifying model of the three types of energy in the cosmos: matter, dark matter and dark energy. Using this model we are able to calculate the ratio of dark energy to the total energy of the cosmos.

Linearized Torsion Waves in a Tensor-Tensor Theory of Gravity

We investigate a linearized tensor-tensor theory of gravity with torsion and a perturbed torsion wave solution is discovered in background Minkowski spacetime with zero torsion. Furthermore, gauge transformations of any perturbed tensor field are derived in general background non-Riemannian geometries. By calculating autoparallel deviations, both longitudinal and transverse polarizations of the torsion wave are discovered.

A systematic approach to the solution of the constraints of quantum gravity: The full theory

This is the third paper in a series outlining an algorithm to construct finite states of quantum gravity in Ashtekar variables. In this paper we treat the case of the Klein--Gordon field quantized with gravity on the same footing. We address the full theory, outlining the solution to the constraints and the construction of the corresponding wavefunction of the universe. The basic method for the full theory is to expand the constraints relative to the solution for the pure Kodama state and rewrite them in the form of a generalized nonlinear group transformation of the CDJ matrix, viewed as a nine-dimensional vector. We then outline a prescription for finding the fixed point of the flow, and the corresponding generalized Kodama state for the full theory is constructed. The final solution is expressed in an asymptotic series in powers of model-specific matter inputs, suppressed by a small dimensionless constant, relative to the pure Kodama state. We discuss this expansion from different perspectives. Lastly, we explicitly show how the solution to the quantized constraints establishes a wavefunction of the universe with a predetermined semiclassical limit built in as a boundary condition on quantized gravity in the full theory.

Direct Amplification of Sound By Light

A new device, the opto-acoustic parametric amplifier (OAPA), is introduced, which is analogous to an optical parametric amplifier (OPA). The radiation pressure reaction of light on the reflective surface of an acoustic resonator provides nonlinearity similar to the Kerr effect in the OPA. The OAPA can be tuned to operate in two regimes. In the positive gain regime, an acoustic signal is directly amplified. In the negative gain regime, we show that the acoustic resonator can be cooled to the quantum ground state.

Stability of Palatini-f(R) cosmology

The evolution of linear cosmological perturbations in modified theories of gravity is investigated assuming the Palatini formalism. It has been discussed about the stability problem in this model based on the equivalence between f(R) gravity and the scalar tensor theory. However, we study this problem in the physical frame where the matter is minimally coupled. In general, the stability of the superhorizon metric evolution depends on models. We show that the deviation from the superhorizon metric evolution is null for a specific choice for the nonlinear Einstein-Hilbert action, $f(\hat{R}) \sim \hat{R}^{n}$, where $n \neq 0,2,3$. Thus the stability of metric fluctuation is guaranteed in these models. We also study the matter density fluctuation in the general gauge and show the differential equations in super and sub-horizon scales.

Quaternionic Analysis and the Algebrodynamics

We present the ``algebrodynamical'' approach to field-particle theory based on a nonlinear generalization of the Cauchy-Riemann conditions to non-commutative algebras of quaternion-like type. For complex quaternions the theory is Lorentz invariant and naturally carries some gauge and twistor structures. Point- and string-like singularities are considered as particle-like formations; their electric charge is ``self-quantized''. A novel ``causal Minkowski geometry with additional phase'' is presented that is induced by the structure of primordial biquaternion algebra. On this geometrical background a self-consistent algebraic dynamics of singularities (``ensemble of dublicons'') is briefly discussed.

Spacetime Dependent Lagrangians and Electrogravity Duality

We apply the spacetime dependent lagrangian formalism [1] to the action in general relativity. We obtain a Barriola-Vilenkin type monopole solution by exploiting theelectrogravity duality of the vacuum Einstein equations and using a modified definition of empty space. An {\it upper bound} is obtained on the monopole mass ${\tt M}$, ${\tt M}\leq e^{(1-α)/α}/(1-α)^{2}{\tt G}$ where $α= 2k $ is the global monopole charge. Keywords: global monopole, electrogravity duality, holographic principle. PACS: 11.15.-q, 11.27.+d, 14.80.Hv, 04.

A Scenario for a Natural Origin of Our Universe

A mathematical model of the natural origin of our universe is presented. The model is based only on well-established physics. No claim is made that this model uniquely represents exactly how the universe came about. But the viability of a single model serves to refute any assertions that the universe cannot have come about by natural means.

On the effects of conformal degrees of freedom inside a neutron star

In this paper a neutron star with an inner core which undergoes a phase transition, which is characterized by conformal degrees of freedom on the phase boundary, is considered. Typical cases of such a phase transition are e.g. quantum Hall effect, superconductivity and superfluidity. Assuming the mechanical stability of this system the effects induced by the conformal degrees of freedom on the phase boundary will be analyzed. We will see that the inclusion of conformal degrees of freedom is not always consistent with the staticity of the phase boundary. Indeed also in the case of mechanical equilibrium there may be the tendency of one phase to swallow the other. Such a shift of the phase boundary would not imply any compression or decompression of the core. By solving the Israel junction conditions for the conformal matter, we have found the range of physical parameters which can guarantee a stable equilibrium of the phase boundary of the neutron star. The relevant parameters turn out to be not only the density difference but also the difference of the slope of the density profiles of the two phases. The values of the parameters which guarantee the stability turn out to be in a phenomenologically reasonable range. For the parameter values where the the phase boundary tends to move, a possible astrophysical consequence related to sudden small changes of the moment of inertia of the star is briefly discussed.

Group field theory as the microscopic description of the quantum spacetime fluid: a new perspective on the continuum in quantum gravity

We introduce the group field theory (GFT) formalism for non-perturbative quantum gravity, and present it as a potential unifying framework for several other quantum gravity approaches, i.e. loop quantum gravity and simplicial quantum gravity ones. We then argue in favor of and present in detail what we believe is a new GFT perspective on the emergence of continuum spacetime from discrete quantum structures, based on the idea of quantum space as a condensed matter system. We put forward a more specific, albeit still very much tentative, proposal for the relevant phase of the GFT corresponding to the continuum: a Bose-Einstein condensate of GFT quanta. Finally, we sketch how the proposal may be realised and its effective dynamics could be extracted in the GFT setting and compared with continuum gravity theories.

Earth's extensive entropy bound

The possibility of planetary mass black hole production by crossing entropy limits is addressed. Such a possibility is given by pointing out that two geophysical quantities have comparable values: first, Earth's total negative entropy flux integrated over geological time and, second, its extensive entropy bound, which follows as a tighter bound to the Bekenstein limit when entropy is an extensive function. The similarity between both numbers suggests that the formation of black holes from planets may be possible through a strong fluctuation toward thermodynamic equilibrium which results in gravothermal instability and final collapse. Briefly discussed are implications for the astronomical observation of low mass black holes and for Fermi's paradox.

Comment on "A Lagrangian for DSR Particle and the Role of Noncommutativity"

In this work, we comment on two special points in the paper by S. Ghosh [Phys. Rev. D 74, 084019 (2006)]. First of all, the Lagrangian presented by the author does not describe the Magueijo- Smolin model of Doubly Special Relativity since it is equivalent to the Lagrangian of the standard free relativistic particle. We also show that the introduction of noncommutative structures is not relevant to the problem of Lorentz covariance in Ghosh formalism.
