A vanishing result for strictly p-convex domains

In view of A. Andreotti and H. Grauert's vanishing theorem for q-complete domains in C^n, (Théorème de finitude pour la cohomologie des espaces complexes, Bull. Soc. Math. France 90 (1962), 193--259,) we re-prove a vanishing result by J.-P. Sha, (p-convex Riemannian manifolds, Invent. Math. 83 (1986), no. 3, 437--447,) and H. Wu, (Manifolds of partially positive curvature, Indiana Univ. Math. J. 36 (1987), no. 3, 525--548,) for the de Rham cohomology of strictly p-convex domains in R^n in the sense of F. R. Harvey and H. B. Lawson, (The foundations of p-convexity and p-plurisubharmonicity in riemannian geometry, arXiv:1111.3895v1 [math.DG]). Our proof uses the L^2-techniques developed by L. Hörmander, (An introduction to complex analysis in several variables, Third edition, North-Holland Mathematical Library, 7, North-Holland Publishing Co., Amsterdam, 1990,) and A. Andreotti and E. Vesentini, (Carleman estimates for the Laplace-Beltrami equation on complex manifolds, Inst. Hautes Études Sci. Publ. Math. 25 (1965), 81--130).

Fundamental form and Cartan's tensor of (2,5)-distributions coincide

In our previous paper (see this arxiv math.DG/0402171) for generic rank 2 vector distributions on n-dimensional manifold (n greater or equal to 5) we constructed a special differential invariant, the fundamental form. In the case n=5 this differential invariant has the same algebraic nature, as the covariant binary biquadratic form, constructed by E.Cartan in 1910, using his ``reduction- prolongation'' procedure (we call this form Cartan's tensor). In the present paper we prove that our fundamental form coincides (up to constant factor -35) with Cartan's tensor. This result explains geometric reason for existence of Cartan's tensor (originally this tensor was obtained by very sophisticated algebraic manipulations) and gives the true analogs of this tensor in Riemannian geometry. In addition, as a part of the proof, we obtain a new useful formula for Cartan's tensor in terms of structural functions of any frame naturally adapted to the distribution.

Calibrated Sub-Bundles in Non-Compact Manifolds of Special Holonomy

This paper is a continuation of math.DG/0408005. We first construct special Lagrangian submanifolds of the Ricci-flat Stenzel metric (of holonomy SU(n)) on the cotangent bundle of S^n by looking at the conormal bundle of appropriate submanifolds of S^n. We find that the condition for the conormal bundle to be special Lagrangian is the same as that discovered by Harvey-Lawson for submanifolds in R^n in their pioneering paper. We also construct calibrated submanifolds in complete metrics with special holonomy G_2 and Spin(7) discovered by Bryant and Salamon on the total spaces of appropriate bundles over self-dual Einstein four manifolds. The submanifolds are constructed as certain subbundles over immersed surfaces. We show that this construction requires the surface to be minimal in the associative and Cayley cases, and to be (properly oriented) real isotropic in the coassociative case. We also make some remarks about using these constructions as a possible local model for the intersection of compact calibrated submanifolds in a compact manifold with special holonomy.

Asymptotically cylindrical 7-manifolds of holonomy G_2 with applications to compact irreducible G_2-manifolds

We construct examples of exponentially asymptotically cylindrical Riemannian 7-manifolds with holonomy group equal to G_2. To our knowledge, these are the first such examples. We also obtain exponentially asymptotically cylindrical coassociative calibrated submanifolds. Finally, we apply our results to show that one of the compact G_2-manifolds constructed by Joyce by desingularisation of a flat orbifold T^7/Γcan be deformed to one of the compact G_2-manifolds obtainable as a generalized connected sum of two exponentially asymptotically cylindrical SU(3)-manifolds via the method given by the first author (math.DG/0012189).

Determinant bundles, boundaries, and surgery

In this note we specialize and illustrate the ideas developed in the paper math.DG/0201112 of the first author ("Index theory, eta forms, and Deligne cohomology ") in the case of the determinant line bundle. We discuss the surgery formula in the adiabatic limit using the adiabatic decomposition formula of the zeta regularized determinant of the Dirac Laplacian obtained by the second author and K. Wojciechowski.

Some extensions of the mean curvature flow in Riemannian manifolds

Given a family of smooth immersions $F_t: M^n\to N^{n+1}$ of closed hypersurfaces in a locally symmetric Riemannian manifold $N^{n+1}$ with bounded geometry, moving by the mean curvature flow, we show that at the first finite singular time of the mean curvature flow, certain subcritical quantities concerning the second fundamental form blow up. This result not only generalizes a recent result of Le-Sesum and Xu-Ye-Zhao, but also extends the latest work of N. Le in the Euclidean case (arXiv: math.DG/1002.4669v2).

Geometry of differential operators, and odd Laplace operators

We solve the following problem: to describe in geometric terms all differential operators of the second order with a given principal symbol. Initially the operators act on scalar functions. Operator pencils acting on densities of arbitrary weights appear naturally in the course of study. We show that for the algebra of densities it is possible to establish a one-to-one correspondence between operators and brackets generated by them. Everything is applicable to supermanifolds as well as to usual manifolds. In the super case the problem is closely connected with the geometry of the Batalin--Vilkovisky formalism in quantum field theory, namely the description of the generating operators for an odd bracket. We give a complete answer. This text is a concise outline of the main results. A detailed exposition is in \texttt{arXiv:math.DG/0212311}.

(Non)local Hamiltonian and symplectic structures, recursions, and hierarchies: a new approach and applications to the N=1 supersymmetric KdV equation

Using methods of math.DG/0304245 and [I.S.Krasil'shchik and P.H.M.Kersten, Symmetries and recursion operators for classical and supersymmetric differential equations, Kluwer, 2000], we accomplish an extensive study of the N=1 supersymmetric Korteweg-de Vries equation. The results include: a description of local and nonlocal Hamiltonian and symplectic structures, five hierarchies of symmetries, the corresponding hierarchies of conservation laws, recursion operators for symmetries and generating functions of conservation laws. We stress that the main point of the paper is not just the results on super-KdV equation itself, but merely exposition of the efficiency of the geometrical approach and of the computational algorithms based on it.

On sigma model RG flow, "central charge" action and Perelman's entropy

Zamolodchikov's c-theorem type argument (and also string theory effective action constructions) imply that the RG flow in 2d sigma model should be gradient one to all loop orders. However, the monotonicity of the flow of the target-space metric is not obvious since the metric on the space of metric-dilaton couplings is indefinite. To leading (one-loop) order when the RG flow is simply the Ricci flow the monotonicity was proved by Perelman (math.dg/0211159) by constructing an ``entropy'' functional which is essentially the metric-dilaton action extremised with respect to the dilaton with a condition that the target-space volume is fixed. We discuss how to generalize the Perelman's construction to all loop orders (i.e. all orders in α'). The resulting ``entropy'' is equal to minus the central charge at the fixed points, in agreement with the general claim of the c-theorem.

Higgs bundles and surface group representations in the real symplectic group

In this paper we study the moduli space of representations of a surface group (i.e., the fundamental group of a closed oriented surface) in the real symplectic group Sp(2n,R). The moduli space is partitioned by an integer invariant, called the Toledo invariant. This invariant is bounded by a Milnor-Wood type inequality. Our main result is a count of the number of connected components of the moduli space of maximal representations, i.e. representations with maximal Toledo invariant. Our approach uses the non-abelian Hodge theory correspondence proved in a companion paper arXiv:0909.4487 [math.DG] to identify the space of representations with the moduli space of polystable Sp(2n,R)-Higgs bundles. A key step is provided by the discovery of new discrete invariants of maximal representations. These new invariants arise from an identification, in the maximal case, of the moduli space of Sp(2n,R)-Higgs bundles with a moduli space of twisted Higgs bundles for the group GL(n,R).

Iterated Differential Forms V: C-Spectral Sequence on Infinite Jet Spaces

In the preceding note math.DG/0610917 the $Λ_{k-1}\mathcal{C}$--spectral sequence, whose first term is composed of \emph{secondary iterated differential forms}, was constructed for a generic diffiety. In this note the zero and first terms of this spectral sequence are explicitly computed for infinite jet spaces. In particular, this gives an explicit description of secondary covariant tensors on these spaces and some basic operations with them. On the basis of these results a description of the $Λ_{k-1}\mathcal{C}$--spectral sequence for infinitely prolonged PDE's will be given in the subsequent note.

We describe the first term of the $Λ_{k-1}\mathcal{C}$--spectral sequence (see math.DG/0610917) of the diffiety (E,C), E being the infinite prolongation of an l-normal system of partial differential equations, and C the Cartan distribution on it.

Natural and Projectively Invariant Quantizations on Supermanifolds

The existence of a natural and projectively invariant quantization in the sense of P. Lecomte [Progr. Theoret. Phys. Suppl. (2001), no. 144, 125-132] was proved by M. Bordemann [math.DG/0208171], using the framework of Thomas-Whitehead connections. We extend the problem to the context of supermanifolds and adapt M. Bordemann's method in order to solve it. The obtained quantization appears as the natural globalization of the $\mathfrak{pgl}({n+1|m})$-equivariant quantization on ${\mathbb{R}}^{n|m}$ constructed by P. Mathonet and F. Radoux in [arXiv:1003.3320]. Our quantization is also a prolongation to arbitrary degree symbols of the projectively invariant quantization constructed by J. George in [arXiv:0909.5419] for symbols of degree two.

PU(2) monopoles and a conjecture of Marino, Moore, and Peradze

In this article we show that some of the recent results of Marino, Moore, and Peradze (math.DG/9812042, hep-th/9812055) -- in particular their conjecture that all closed, smooth four-manifolds with b_2^+ > 1 (and Seiberg-Witten simple type) are of `superconformal simple type' -- can be understood using a simple mathematical argument via the PU(2)-monopole cobordism of Pidstrigach and Tyurin (dg-ga/9507004) and results of the first and third authors (dg-ga/9712005, dg-ga/9709022).

D-branes of A-type, their deformations, and Morse cobordism of A-branes on Calabi-Yau 3-folds under a split attractor flow: Donaldson/Alexander-Hilden-Lozano-Montesinos-Thurston/Hurwitz/Denef-Joyce meeting Polchinski-Grothendieck

In [L-Y5] (D(6): arXiv:1003.1178 [math.SG]) we introduced the notion of Azumaya $C^{\infty}$-manifolds with a fundamental module and morphisms therefrom to a complex manifold. In the current sequel, we use this notion to give a prototypical definition of supersymmetric D-branes of A-type (i.e. A-branes) -- in an appropriate region of the Wilson's theory-space of string theory -- as special Lagrangian morphisms from such objects with a unitary, minimally flat connection-with-singularities. This merges Donaldson's picture of special Lagrangian submanifolds and the Polchinski-Grothendieck Ansatz for D-branes on a Calabi-Yau space. Basic phenomena of D-branes such as Higgsing/un-Higgsing and large- vs. small-brane wrapping can be realized via deformations of such morphisms. Classical results of Alexander, Hilden, Lozano, Montesinos, and Thurston suggest then a genus-like expansion of the path-integral of D3-branes. Similarly for D2-branes and M2-branes. In the last section, we use the technical results of Joyce on desingularizations of special Lagrangian submanifolds with conical singularities to explain how A-branes thus defined can be driven and re-assemble under a split attractor flow, as studied in an earlier work of Denef. This section is to be read with arXiv:hep-th/0107152 of Denef and arXiv:math.DG/0303272 of Joyce.

Homotopies and automorphisms of crossed modules of groupoids

We give a detailed description of the structure of the actor 2-crossed module related to the automorphisms of a crossed module of groupoids. This generalises work of Brown and Gilbert for the case of crossed modules of groups, and part of this is needed for work on 2-dimensional holonomy to be developed elsewhere (see math.DG/0009082).
