Planetary Kp index forecast using autoregressive models

The geomagnetic Kp index is derived from the K index measurements obtained from thirteen stations located around the Earth geomagnetic latitudes between $48^\circ$ and $63^\circ$. This index is processed every three hours, is quasi-logarithmic and estimates the geomagnetic activity. The Kp values fall within a range of 0 to 9 and are organized as a set of 28 discrete values. The data set is important because it is used as one of the many input parameters of magnetospheric and ionospheric models. The objective of this work is to use historical data from the Kp index to develop a methodology to make a prediction in a time interval of at least three hours. Five different models to forecast geomagnetic indices Kp and ap are tested. Time series of values of Kp index from 1932 to 15/12/2012 at 21:00 UT are used as input to the models. The purpose of the model is to predict the three measured values after the last measured value of the Kp index (it means the next 9 hours values). The AR model provides the lowest computational cost with satisfactory results. The ARIMA model is efficient for predicting Kp index during geomagnetic disturbance conditions. This paper provides a quick and efficient way to make a prediction of Kp index, without using satellite data. Although it is reported that the forecast results are better when satellite data are used. In the literature we find that the linear correlation between predicted values and actual values is $77\%$, which is better than the $68.5\%$ obtained in this work. However, taking into account that our results are based only on Kp stochastic time series, the correlation value can be considered satisfactory.

The Quasilinear Premise for the Modeling of Plasma Turbulence

The quasilinear premise is a hypothesis for the modeling of plasma turbulence in which the turbulent fluctuations are represented by a superposition of randomly-phased linear wave modes, and energy is transferred among these wave modes via nonlinear interactions. We define specifically what constitutes the quasilinear premise, and present a range of theoretical arguments in support of the relevance of linear wave properties even in a strongly turbulent plasma. We review evidence both in support of and in conflict with the quasilinear premise from numerical simulations and measurements of plasma turbulence in the solar wind. Although the question of the validity of the quasilinear premise remains to be settled, we suggest that the evidence largely supports the value of the quasilinear premise in modeling plasma turbulence and that its usefulness may also be judged by the insights gained from such an approach, with the ultimate goal to develop the capability to predict the evolution of any turbulent plasma system, including the spectrum of turbulent fluctuations, their dissipation, and the resulting plasma heating.

Diurnal variation of VLF signals

This paper presents an introduction to Chapman's theory of a production layer in the ionosphere relevant to the monitoring of VLF signals and Sudden Ionospheric Distubances (SIDs). It shows how the diurnal pattern of VLF signal strength can be derived, and how this pattern may be fitted to VLF signal strength measurements. It also shows through an example some of the possible problems for fitting this diurnal pattern (the fact that D-layer height cannot always be derived directly from measurements) and some of the advantages when a `fit' has been obtained (increased sensitivity of the instrument without any changes to hardware).

Daily Variations of the Geomagnetic Field in the Brazilian zone

The solar quiet daily variation (Sq) was investigated with respect to the longitudinal and seasonal variations at the Brazilian geomagnetic ground stations of Tatuoca (TTB), Vassouras (VSS ) and São Martinho da Serra (SMS). The data utilized was collected during the time interval from January to May 2010. We employed the continuous wavelet transforms and cross wavelet coherence to study the spectral content and correlations of the time series in the time-frequency domain. We identified possible phenomena of regional or global scope that could be affecting the magnetic response measured at TTB, VSS and SMS observatories. As a result some signatures of planetary waves and semidiurnal tides in the Sq variability were obtained.

A Study of Pc4-5 Geomagnetic Pulsations in the Brazilian Sector

This paper presents a study of Pc4-5 geomagnetic pulsations illustrated by those which were observed after the sudden commencement of May 02 of 2010 at 09 : 08 UT at the Brazilian stations TTB, VSS and SMS. We carry out the spectral analysis of a bivariate data using the Morse wavelets and calculate polarization attributes (ellipticity ratio, tilt angle and phase difference) in the time-frequency domain. The main pulsation wave packets occurred, for the selected day, around noon and a small enhancement of the pulsation amplitude is observed in the TTB station. A change in the pulsation polarization has been found for the TTB station, which we have attributed to effects of the equatorial electrojet.

Numerical Simulations Of The Effect Of Localised Ionospheric Perturbations On Subionospheric VLF Propagation

Electron density and temperature changes in the D-region of the ionosphere are sensitively manifested as changes in the amplitude and phase of subionospheric Very Low Frequency (VLF) signals propagating beneath the perturbed region. Disturbances (either in electron density or temperature) in the D region cause significant scattering of VLF waves propagating in the earth-ionosphere waveguide, leading to measurable changes in the amplitude and phase of the VLF waves. We analyze Lightning-induced electron precipitation (LEP) events during period 2008 - 2009 at Belgrade station on subionospheric VLF signals from four transmitters (DHO/23.4 kHz, Germany; GQD/22.1 kHz, UK; NAA/24.0 kHz USA and ICV/20.9 kHz Italy).

Space environments variability and its impact on total dose and single event effects in electronic parts

The aim of this paper is the modeling and simulation of impact of space radiation variability on total dose and single event effects in spaceborne electronics. It has been shown that the simultaneous thermal annealing may lead to non-stationary relaxation after dose-rate peaks. Significant enhancement of soft error rate during solar flares in the memories mitigated by the scrubbing due to non-linear dependence on particle flux has been revealed.

A new approach to detect the boundaries of interplanetary events

We propose a new method to scan the data and then to infer the boundaries of the interplanetary coronal mass ejections, especially the interplanetary events observed by \emph{Ulysses}. The local minima of the temperatures ratio measured by the spacecraft are used to scan and compute the potential boundaries of the interplanetary events. The low plasma beta values are then invoked to detect at least four boundaries, two for the beginning and two for the end of an interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME). Intermediate boundaries can be identified, as indicated by other plasma and magnetic field signatures, and these ones mark substructures of a complex event. Using the algorithm described in this article, we have compiled a list of the ICME events registered by \emph{Ulysses} spacecraft during 2000-2002, with their boundaries. After a statistical analysis, four relationships of the plasma beta with the speed are then inferred for the computed ICMEs, for each of the four detected boundaries in our compiled list. In order to exemplify the method we analyse in detail four events. This method provides premises for an alternative way of semi-automatic detection of the interplanetary events' boundaries observed by \emph{Ulysses} spacecraft. We introduce here also a method for visualisation of the magnetic field components that allows detection of plasma insulations and boundaries detection for other satellites too.

Electron scale nested quadrupole Hall field in Cluster observations of magnetic reconnection

This Letter presents the first evidence of a new and unique feature of spontaneous reconnection at multiple sites in electron current sheet, viz. nested quadrupole structure of Hall field at electron scales, in Cluster observations. The new nested quadrupole is a consequence of electron scale processes in reconnection. Whistler response of the upstream plasma to the interaction of electron flows from neighboring reconnection sites produces a large scale quadrupole Hall field enclosing the quadrupole fields of the multiple sites, thus forming a nested structure. Electron-magnetohydrodynamic simulations of an electron current sheet yields mechanism of the formation of nested quadrupole.

Molecular Hydrogen bubbles formation on thin vacuum deposited Aluminum layers after proton irradiation

Metals are the most common materials used in space technology. Metal structures, while used in space, are subjected to the full spectrum of the electromagnetic radiation together with particle irradiation. Hence, they undergo degradation. Future space missions are planned to proceed in the interplanetary space, where the protons of the solar wind play a very destructive role on metallic surfaces. Unfortunately, their real degradation behavior is to a great extent unknown. Our aim is to predict materials' behavior in such a destructive environment. Therefore both, theoretical and experimental studies are performed at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Bremen, Germany. Here, we report the theoretical results of those studies. We examine the process of H2-bubble formation on metallic surfaces. H2-bubbles are metal caps filled with Hydrogen molecular gas resulting from recombination processes of the metal free electrons and the solar protons. A thermodynamic model of the bubble growth is presented. Our model predicts e.g. the velocity of that growth and the reflectivity of foils populated by bubbles. Formation of bubbles irreversibly changes the surface quality of irradiated metals. Thin metallic films are especially sensitive for such degradation processes. They are used e.g. in the solar sail propulsion technology. The efficiency of that technology depends on the thermo-optical properties of the sail materials. Therefore, bubble formation processes have to be taken into account for the planning of long-term solar sail missions.

Respiratory Particle Deposition Probability due to Sedimentation with Variable Gravity and Electrostatic Forces

In this paper, we study the effects of the acceleration gravity on the sedimentation deposition probability, as well as the aerosol deposition rate on the surface of the Earth and Mars, but also aboard a spacecraft in orbit around Earth and Mars as well for particles with density rho_p = 1300 kg/m^3, diameters d_p = 1, 3, 5 micrometers and residence times t = 0.0272, 0.2 s respectively. For particles of diameter 1 micrometer we find that, on the surface of Earth and Mars the deposition probabilities are higher at the poles when compared to the ones at the equator. Similarly, on the surface of the Earth we find that the deposition probabilities exhibit 0.5% and 0.4% higher percentage difference at the poles when compared to that of the equator, for the corresponding residence times. Moreover in orbit equatorial orbits result to higher deposition probabilities when compared to polar ones. For both residence times particles with the diameters considered above in circular and elliptical orbits around Mars, the deposition probabilities appear to be the same for all orbital inclinations. Sedimentation probability increases drastically with particle diameter and orbital eccentricity of the orbiting spacecraft. Finally, as an alternative framework for the study of interaction and the effect of gravity in biology, and in particular gravity and the respiratory system we introduce is the term information in a way Shannon has introduced it, considering the sedimentation probability as a random variable. This can be thought as a way in which gravity enters the cognitive processes of the system (processing of information) in the cybernetic sense.

Spiralicity and Motion on Cosmic Scale

We hypothesize a simple scenario to associate spiral-shaped trajectories and asymptotic tangential velocities according to observations found on deep space scales. As a difference with alternative Modified Newton Dynamics (MoND), in our scenario the dynamics at cosmic distances depends on the velocity of the rotating galaxy instead of its acceleration. We assume dark matter to exert a quadratic fluid resistance force with an added non-linear drag force in the radial direction.

An intrinsic way to control E-sail spin

We show that by having the auxtethers made partly or completely of conducting material and by controlling their voltages, it is possible to control the spin rate of the electric solar wind sail by using the electric sail effect itself. The proposed intrinsic spin rate control scheme has enough control authority to overcome the secular change of the spin rate due to orbital Coriolis effect.

Relativistic Stereometric Coordinates from Relativistic Localizing Systems and the Projective Geometry of the Spacetime Manifold

Relativistic stereometric coordinates supplied by relativistic auto-locating positioning systems made up of four satellites supplemented by a fifth one are defined in addition to the well-known emission and reception coordinates. Such a constellation of five satellites defines a so-called relativistic localizing system. The determination of such systems is motivated by the need to not only locate (within a grid) users utilizing receivers but, more generally, to localize any spacetime event. The angles measured on the celestial spheres of the five satellites enter into the definition. Therefore, there are, up to scalings, intrinsic physical coordinates related to the underlying conformal structure of spacetime. Moreover, they indicate that spacetime must be endowed everywhere with a local projective geometry characteristic of a so-called generalized Cartan space locally modeled on four-dimensional, real projective space. The particular process of localization providing the relativistic stereometric coordinates is based, in a way, on an enhanced notion of parallax in space and time generalizing the usual parallax restricted to space only.

What is Generic Structure of the 3D Null-Point Magnetic Reconnection?

The probability of occurrence of various topological configurations of the 3D null-point reconnection in a random magnetic field is studied. It is found that the non-axisymmetrical six-tail configuration (or "improper radial null") should play the dominant role; while all other types of reconnection, in particular, the axially-symmetric fan-like structures (or "proper radial nulls") are realized with a much less probability. A characteristic feature of the six-tail configuration is that at the sufficiently large scales it is approximately reduced to the well-known 2D X-type structure; and this explains why the 2D models of reconnection usually work quite well.

The Complex Irradiation Facility at DLR-Bremen

All material exposed to interplanetary space conditions are subject to degradation processes. For obvious reasons there is a great interest to study these processes for materials that are used in satellite construction. However, also the influence of particle and electromagnetic radiation on the weathering of extraterrestrial rocks and on organic and biological tissues is the research topic of various scientific disciplines. To strengthen the comprehensive and systematic investigation of degradation processes a new laboratory, the complex irradiation facility (CIF), has been designed, set up, tested, and put into operation at the DLR-Institute of Space Systems in Bremen (Germany). The CIF allows the simultaneous irradiation with three light sources and with a dual beam irradiation system for the bombardment of materials with electrons and protons having energies up to 100 keV. It is eminently suitable to perform a large variety of irradiation procedures that are similar to those which appear at different distances to the Sun. This paper is devoted to potential users in order to inform them about the capabilities of the CIF.

On Permanent and Sporadic Oscillations of the Magnetosphere

In this paper we investigate the impact of permanent oscillations Pc3 on the excitation of sporadic oscillations Pi2 ( their periods are 10-45 and 40-150 s, respectively ). The hypothesis is formulated that Pc3 oscillations originating in front of the magnetosphere penetrate into the geomagnetic tail, cause a local depression in the current in the neutral sheet, and under favorable conditions stimulate a tearing instability. This leads to reconnection of magnetic field lines and an explosive release of magnetic energy stored in the tail. As a result, a substorm breaks up, with sporadic pulsations Pi2 as an important element of this process. It is expected from theoretical estimates and kinematic considerations that the higher the Pc3 frequency, the earlier the Pi2 trains start. We test this prediction using observational data from satellite measurements of the interplanetary magnetic field and on-ground magnetic measurements. The results confirm the theoretical expectation. Additional routes are proposed to theoretically and experimentally test the hypothesis.
