The Magnus force in superfluids and superconductors

The forces on the vortex, transverse to its velocity, are considered. In addition to the superfluid Magnus force from the condensate (superfluid component), there are transverse forces from thermal quasiparticles and external fields violating the translational invariance. The forces between quasiparticles and the vortex originate from interference of quasiparticles with trajectories on the left and on the right from the vortex like similar forces for electrons interacting with the thin magnetic-flux tube (the Aharonov-Bohm effect). These forces are derived in the Born approximation for phonons from the equations of superfluid hydrodynamics, and for BCS quasiparticles from the Bogolyubov-de Gennes equations. The effect of external fields violating translational invariance is analyzed for vortices in the two-dimensional Josephson junction array. The symmetry analysis of the classical equations for the array shows that the total transverse force on the vortex vanishes. Therefore the Hall effect which is linear in the transverse force is absent also. This means that the Magnus force from the superfluid component exactly cancels with the transverse force from the external fields. The results of other approaches are also brought together for discussion.

Flux flow resistivity and vortex viscosity of high-Tc films

The flux flow regime of high-T$_{\rm c}$ samples of different normal state resistivities is studied in the temperature range where the sign of the Hall effect is reversed. The scaling of the vortex viscosity with normal state resistivity is consistent with the Bardeen-Stephen theory. Estimates of the influence of possible mechanisms suggested for the sign reversal of the Hall effect are also given.

Extended bound states and resonances of two fermions on a periodic lattice

The high-$T_c$ cuprates are possible candidates for d-wave superconductivity, with the Cooper pair wave function belonging to a non-trivial irreducible representation of the lattice point group. We argue that this d-wave symmetry is related to a special form of the fermionic kinetic energy and does not require any novel pairing mechanism. In this context, we present a detailed study of the bound states and resonances formed by two lattice fermions interacting via a non-retarded potential that is attractive for nearest neighbors but repulsive for other relative positions. In the case of strong binding, a pair formed by fermions on adjacent lattice sites can have a small effective mass, thereby implying a high condensation temperature. For a weakly bound state, a pair with non-trivial symmetry tends to be smaller in size than an s-wave pair. These and other findings are discussed in connection with the properties of high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors.

The Fluctuation Induced Pseudogap in the Infrared Optical Conductivity of High Temperature Superconductors

We study the effect of fluctuations on the {\bf ac} conductivity of a layered superconductor both for $c$-axis and $ab$-plane electromagnetic wave polarizations. The fluctuation contributions of different physical nature and signs (paraconductivity, Maki-Thompson anomalous contribution, one-electron density of states renormalization) are found to be suppressed by the external field at different characterisitic frequencies ($ ω_{\rm AL}\sim T-T_{\rm c}$, $ω_{\rm MT} \sim \max\{ T-T_{\rm c}, τ_φ^{-1}\}$, $ ω_{\rm DOS} \sim \min\{T,τ^{-1}\}$ for the $2D$ case). As a result the appearance of the nonmonotonic frequency dependence (pseudogap) in the infrared optical conductivity of HTS film is predicted. The effect has to be especially pronounced in the case of the electromagnetic field polarization along $c$-axis.

Current-Induced Chiral Phase Transition in a Josephson-Junction Array

It is predicted that the fully frustrated Josephson-junction array on a square lattice with alternating columns of junctions having a reduced critical current $I_{weak}=μI_{0}$(with $μ<1$ and $I_{0}$ the critical current of all other junctions) in certain range of $μ$ will under increasing of the external current first change from the state with zero chirality to the state with nonzero one at the lower critical current $I_{c1}$ before entering nonsuperconducting state at the upper critical current $I_{c2}$.

Critical State Flux Penetration and Linear Microwave Vortex Response in YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x} Films

The vortex contribution to the dc field (H) dependent microwave surface impedance Z_s = R_s+iX_s of YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x} thin films was measured using suspended patterned resonators. Z_s(H) is shown to be a direct measure of the flux density B(H) enabling a very precise test of models of flux penetration. Three regimes of field-dependent behavior were observed: (1) Initial flux penetration occurs on very low field scales H_i(4.2K) 100Oe, (2) At moderate fields the flux penetration into the virgin state is in excellent agreement with calculations based upon the field-induced Bean critical state for thin film geometry, parametrized by a field scale H_s(4.2K) J_c*d 0.5T, (3) for very high fields H >>H_s, the flux density is uniform and the measurements enable direct determination of vortex parameters such as pinning force constants α_p and vortex viscosity η. However hysteresis loops are in disagreement with the thin film Bean model, and instead are governed by the low field scale H_i, rather than by H_s. Geometric barriers are insufficient to account for the observed results.

Ginzburg-Landau-Gor'kov Theory of Magnetic oscillations in a type-II 2-dimensional Superconductor

We investigate de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations in the mixed state of a type-II two-dimensional superconductor within a self-consistent Gor'kov perturbation scheme. Assuming that the order parameter forms a vortex lattice we can calculate the expansion coefficients exactly to any order. We have tested the results of the perturbation theory to fourth and eight order against an exact numerical solution of the corresponding Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. The perturbation theory is found to describe the onset of superconductivity well close to the transition point $H_{c2}$. Contrary to earlier calculations by other authors we do not find that the perturbative scheme predicts any maximum of the dHvA-oscillations below $H_{c2}$. Instead we obtain a substantial damping of the magnetic oscillations in the mixed state as compared to the normal state. We have examined the effect of an oscillatory chemical potential due to particle conservation and the effect of a finite Zeeman splitting. Furthermore we have investigated the recently debated issue of a possibility of a sign change of the fundamental harmonic of the magnetic oscillations. Our theory is compared with experiment and we have found good agreement.

Regular solutions in Abelian gauge model

The regular solutions for the Ginzburg-Landau (-Nielsen-Olesen) Abelian gauge model are studied numerically. We consider the static isolated cylindrically symmetric configurations. The well known (Abrikosov) vortices, which present a particular example of such solutions, play an important role in the theory of type II superconductors and in the models of structure formation in the early universe. We find new regular static isolated cylindrically symmetric solutions which we call the type B and the flux tube solutions. In contrast to the pure vortex configurations which have finite energy, the new regular solutions possess a finite Gibbs free energy. The flux tubes appear to be energetically the most preferable configurations in the interval of external magnetic fields between the thermodynamic critical value $H_{c}$ and the upper critical field $H_{c_2}$, while the pure vortex dominate only between the lower critical field $H_{c_1}$ and $H_{c}$. Our conclusion is thus that type B and flux tube solutions are important new elements necessary for the correct understanding of a transition from the vortex state to the completely normal state.

Critical Exponents of the Superconducting Phase Transition

We study the critical exponents of the superconducting phase transition in the context of renormalization group theory starting from a dual formulation of the Ginzburg-Landau theory. The dual formulation describes a loop gas of Abrikosov flux tubes which proliferate when the critical temperature is approached from below. In contrast to the Ginzburg-Landau theory, it has a spontaneously broken global symmetry and possesses an infrared stable fixed point. The exponents coincide with those of a superfluid with reversed temperature axis.

Phonon Assisted Multimagnon Optical Absorption and Long Lived Two-Magnon States in Undoped Lamellar Copper Oxides

We calculate the effective charge for multimagnon infrared (IR) absorption assisted by phonons in the parent insulating compounds of cuprate superconductors and the spectra for two-magnon absorption using interacting spin-wave theory. Recent measured bands in the mid IR [Perkins et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 71} 1621 (1993)] are interpreted as involving one phonon plus a two-magnon virtual bound state, and one phonon plus higher multimagnon absorption processes. The virtual bound state consists of a narrow resonance occurring when the magnon pair has total momentum close to $(π,0)$.

Phenomenological BCS theory of the high-$T_c$ cuprates

A BCS model characterized by a phenomenological pair potential with on-site ($V_0$), nearest ($V_1$), and next nearest ($V_2$) neighbour coupling constants, and an empirical quasiparticle dispersion taken from angle-resolved photoemission spectra is considered. The model can consistently explain the experimental data concerning the pair state of the hole doped cuprates. Three ingredients are required to make the interpretation possible: the existence of flat bands, a very small effective on-site repulsion, and a slightly dominating effective nnn attraction $V_2$ of the order of 60-80meV with a ratio $V_2/V_1 \approx 1.5$.

Theory of Electronic Raman Scattering in Disordered $d-$wave Superconductors

A theory for the effect of impurity scattering on electronic Raman scattering in unconventional superconductors is presented. The impurity dependence of the the spectra can be used to to distinguish between conventional (anisotropic $s-$wave) or unconventional ($d$-wave) energy gaps, and excellent agreement with the data on three cuprate superconductors is shown for $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ pairing. The full frequency dependence of the spectra can be reproduced by including inelastic scattering due to spin fluctuations and/or Coulomb scattering on a partially nested Fermi surface.

Parity Fluctuations Between Coulomb Blockaded Superconducting Islands

We find that if two superconducting islands of different number parity are linked by a tunnel junction the unpaired electron in the odd island has a tendency to tunnel into the even island. This process leads to fluctuations in time of the number parity of each island, giving rise to a random telegraph noise spectrum with a characteristic frequency that has an unusual temperature dependence. This new phenomenon should be observable in a Cooper-pair pump and similar single-electron tunneling devices.

GINZBURG-LANDAU THEORY OF VORTICES IN $d$-WAVE SUPERCONDUCTORS

Ginzburg-Landau theory is used to study the properties of single vortices and of the Abrikosov vortex lattice in a $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconductor. For a single vortex, the $s$-wave order parameter has the expected four-lobe structure in a ring around the core and falls off like $1/r^2$ at large distances. The topological structure of the $s$-wave order parameter consists of one counter-rotating unit vortex, centered at the core, surrounded by four symmetrically placed positive unit vortices. The Abrikosov lattice is shown to have a triangular structure close to $T_c$ and an oblique structure at lower temperatures. Comparison is made to recent neutron scattering data.

"Chain scenario" for Josephson tunneling with pi-shift in YBa2Cu3O7

We point out that all current Josephson-junction experiments probing directly the symmetry of the superconducting state in YBa2Cu3O7, can be interpreted in terms of the bilayer antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation model, which renders the superconducting state with the order parameters of extended $s$ symmetry, but with the opposite signs in the bonding and antibonding Cu-O plane bands. The essential part of our interpretation includes the Cu-O chain band which would have the order parameter of the same sign as antibonding plane band. We show that in this case net Josephson currents along and perpendicular to the chains have the phase shift equal to pi.

First-Order Vortex Lattice Melting and Magnetization of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}

We present the first non-mean-field calculation of the magnetization $M(T)$ of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ both above and below the flux-lattice melting temperature $T_m(H)$. The results are in good agreement with experiment as a function of transverse applied field $H$. The effects of fluctuations in both order parameter $ψ({\bf r})$ and magnetic induction $B$ are included in the Ginzburg-Landau free energy functional: $ψ({\bf r})$ fluctuates within the lowest Landau level in each layer, while $B$ fluctuates uniformly according to the appropriate Boltzmann factor. The second derivative $(\partial^2 M/\partial T^2)_H$ is predicted to be negative throughout the vortex liquid state and positive in the solid state. The discontinuities in entropy and magnetization at melting are calculated to be $\sim 0.034\, k_B$ per flux line per layer and $\sim 0.0014$~emu~cm$^{-3}$ at a field of 50 kOe.

Deviations from Fermi-liquid behavior above $T_c$ in 2D short coherence length superconductors

We show that there are qualitative differences between the temperature dependence of the spin and charge correlations in the normal state of the 2D attractive Hubbard model using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The one-particle density of states shows a pseudogap above $\tc$ with a depleted $N(0)$ with decreasing $T$. The susceptibility $\cs$ and the low frequency spin spectral weight track $N(0)$, which explains the spin-gap scaling: $1/T_1T \sim \cs(T)$. However the charge channel is dominated by collective behavior and the compressibility $dn/dμ$ is $T$-independent. This anomalous ``spin-charge separation'' is shown to exist even at intermediate $|U|$ where the momentum distribution $n(\bk)$ gives evidence for degenerate Fermi system.

Coupling between planes and chains in YBa2Cu3O7 : a possible solution for the order parameter controversy

We propose to explain the contradictory experimental evidence about the symmetry of the order parameter in $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7} $ by taking into account the coupling between planes and chains. This leads to an anticrossing of the plane and chain band. We include an attractive pairing interaction within the planes and a repulsive one between planes and chains, leading to opposite signs for the order parameter on planes and chains, and to nodes of the gap because of the anticrossing. Our model blends s-wave and d-wave features, and provides a natural explanation for all the contradictory experiments
