Specific heat of two-dimensional diluted magnets

Using Monte Carlo techniques, the two-dimensional site-diluted Ising model is studied. In particular, properties of the specific heat, its critical behaviour and the emergence of a non-singular maximum above the transition temperature at moderate concentration of defects, are discussed.

Fractional Calculus and the Evolution of Fractal Phenomena

It is argued that the evolution of complex phenomena ought to be described by fractional, differential, stochastic equations whose solutions have scaling properties and are therefore random, fractal functions. To support this argument we demonstrate that the fractional derivative (integral) of a generalized Weierstrass function (GWF) is another fractal function with a greater (lesser) fractal dimension. We also determine that the GWF is a solution to such a fractional differential stochastic equation of motion.

Multifractal scaling of electronic transmission resonances in perfect and imperfect Fibonacci $δ$-function potentials

We present here a detailed multifractal scaling study for the electronic transmission resonances with the system size for an infinitely large one dimensional perfect and imperfect quasiperiodic system represented by a sequence of $δ$-function potentials. The electronic transmission resonances in the energy minibands manifest more and more fragmented nature of the transmittance with the change of system sizes. We claim that when a small perturbation is randomly present at a few number of sites, the nature of electronic states will change and this can be understood by studying the electronic transmittance with the change of system size. We report the different critical states manifested in the size variation of the transmittance corresponding to the resonant energies for both perfect and imperfect cases through multifractal scaling study for few of these resonances.

Towards a Field Theory of the Plateau Transition

We suggest a procedure for calculating correlation functions of the local densities of states (DOS) at the plateau transitions in the Integer Quantum Hall effect (IQHE). We argue that their correlation functions are appropriately described in terms of the SL($2,{\Bbb C}$)/SU(2) WZNW model (at the usual Ka{\v c}--Moody point and with the level $6 \leq k \leq 8$). In this model we have identified the operators corresponding to the local DOS, and derived the partial differential equation determining their correlation functions. The OPEs for powers of the local DOS obtained from this equation are in agreement with available results.

The Magnetized Electron Gas in terms of Hurwitz Zeta Functions

We obtain explicit expressions for thermodynamic quantities of a relativistic degenerate free electron gas in a magnetic field in terms of Hurwitz Zeta functions. The formulation allows for systematic expansion in all regimes. Three energy scales appear naturally in the degenerate relativistic gas: the Fermi energy Ef, the temperature T and an energy related to the magnetic field or Landau level spacing, eB/Ef. We study the cold and warm scenarios, T << eB/Ef and eB/Ef << T, respectively. We reproduce the oscillations of the magnetization as a function of the field in the cold regime and the dilution of them in the warm regime.

Finite size effects in boundary sine-Gordon theory

We examine the spectrum and boundary energy in boundary sine-Gordon theory, based on our recent results on the complete spectrum predicted by closing the boundary bootstrap. We check the spectrum and the reflection factors against truncated conformal space, together with a (still unpublished) prediction by Al.B. Zamolodchikov for the boundary energy and the relation between the parameters of the scattering amplitudes and of the perturbed CFT Hamiltonian. In addition, we give a derivation of Zamolodchikov's formulae. We find an entirely consistent picture and strong evidence for the validity of the conjectured spectrum and scattering amplitudes, which together give a complete description of the boundary sine-Gordon theory on mass shell.

Critical exponents from optimised renormalisation group flows

Within the exact renormalisation group, the scaling solutions for O(N) symmetric scalar field theories are studied to leading order in the derivative expansion. The Gaussian fixed point is examined for d>2 dimensions and arbitrary infrared regularisation. The Wilson-Fisher fixed point in d=3 is studied using an optimised flow. We compute critical exponents and subleading corrections-to-scaling to high accuracy from the eigenvalues of the stability matrix at criticality for all N. We establish that the optimisation is responsible for the rapid convergence of the flow and polynomial truncations thereof. The scheme dependence of the leading critical exponent is analysed. For all N > 0, it is found that the leading exponent is bounded. The upper boundary is achieved for a Callan-Symanzik flow and corresponds, for all N, to the large-N limit. The lower boundary is achieved by the optimised flow and is closest to the physical value. We show the reliability of polynomial approximations, even to low orders, if they are accompanied by an appropriate choice for the regulator. Possible applications to other theories are outlined.

Criticality in self-dual sine-Gordon models

We discuss the nature of criticality in the $β^2 = 2 πN$ self-dual extention of the sine-Gordon model. This field theory is related to the two-dimensional classical XY model with a N-fold degenerate symmetry-breaking field. We briefly overview the already studied cases $N=2,4$ and analyze in detail the case N=3 where a single phase transition in the three-state Potts universality class is expected to occur. The Z$_3$ infrared critical properties of the $β^2 = 6 π$ self-dual sine-Gordon model are derived using two non-perturbative approaches. On one hand, we map the model onto an integrable deformation of the Z$_4$ parafermion theory. The latter is known to flow to a massless Z$_3$ infrared fixed point. Another route is based on the connection with a chirally asymmetric, su(2)$_4$ $\otimes$ su(2)$_1$ Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model with anisotropic current-current interaction, where we explore the existence of a decoupling (Toulouse) point.

Matching numerical simulations to continuum field theories: A lattice renormalization study

The study of nonlinear phenomena in systems with many degrees of freedom often relies on complex numerical simulations. In trying to model realistic situations, these systems may be coupled to an external environment which drives their dynamics. For nonlinear field theories coupled to thermal (or quantum) baths, discrete lattice formulations must be dealt with extreme care if the results of the simulations are to be interpreted in the continuum limit. Using techniques from renormalization theory, a self-consistent method is presented to match lattice results to continuum models. As an application, symmetry restoration in $ϕ^4$ models is investigated.

Eigenvalue distribution of large random matrices, from one matrix to several coupled matrices

It has been observed that the statistical distribution of the eigenvalues of random matrices possesses universal properties, independent of the probability law of the stochastic matrix. In this article we find the correlation functions of this distribution in two classes of random hermitian matrix models: the one-matrix model, and the two-matrix model, although it seems that the methods and conclusions presented here will allow generalization to other multi-matrix models such as the chain of matrices, or the O(n) model. We recover the universality of the two point function in two regimes: short distance regime when the two eigenvalues are separated by a small number of other eigenvalues, and on the other hand the long range regime, when the two eigenvalues are far away in the spectrum, in this regime we have to smooth the short scale oscillations. We also discuss the universality properties of more than two eigenvalues correlation functions.

Quantum Link Models: A Discrete Approach to Gauge Theories

We construct lattice gauge theories in which the elements of the link matrices are represented by non-commuting operators acting in a Hilbert space. These quantum link models are related to ordinary lattice gauge theories in the same way as quantum spin models are related to ordinary classical spin systems. Here U(1) and SU(2) quantum link models are constructed explicitly. As Hamiltonian theories quantum link models are nonrelativistic gauge theories with potential applications in condensed matter physics. When formulated with a fifth Euclidean dimension, universality arguments suggest that dimensional reduction to four dimensions occurs. Hence, quantum link models are also reformulations of ordinary quantum field theories and are applicable to particle physics, for example to QCD. The configuration space of quantum link models is discrete and hence their numerical treatment should be simpler than that of ordinary lattice gauge theories with a continuous configuration space.

Chiral Anomaly and Index Theorem on a finite lattice

The condition for a lattice Dirac operator D to reproduce correct chiral anomaly at each site of a finite lattice for smooth background gauge fields is that D possesses exact zero modes satisfying the Atiyah-Singer index theorem. This is also the necessary condition for D to have correct fermion determinant (ratio) which plays the important role of incorporating dynamical fermions in the functional integral.

Large-q expansion of the correlation length in the two-dimensional q-state Potts model

The large-q expansions of the exponential correlation length and the second moment correlation length for the q-state Potts model in two dimensions are calculated at the first order phase transition point both in the ordered and disordered phases. The expansion coefficients in the ordered and disordered phases coincide in lower orders for both of the two types of the correlation lengths, but they differ a little from each other in higher orders for the second moment correlation length. The second largest eigenvalues of the transfer matrix have the continuum spectrum both in the ordered and disordered phases in the large-q region, which is suggested to be maintained even in the limit of $q\to 4$ from the analysis of the expansion series.

Non-perturbative states in the three-dimensional phi^4 theory

We study the spectrum of massive excitations of the three-dimensional phi^4 and Ising models, in the broken-symmetry phase. Using a variational method, we show that the spectrum contains all the 0+ states that one expects from duality with the glueball spectrum of the Z(2) gauge model. From the point of view of continuum phi^4 theory, we show that at least one of the states we find has a non-perturbative origin.

Improved Transfer-Matrix Schemes of Phenomenological Renormalization

Different phenomenological RG transformations based on scaling relations for the derivatives of the inverse correlation length and singular part of the free-energy density are considered. These transformations are tested on the 2D square Ising and Potts models as well as on the 3D simple-cubic Ising model. Variants of RG equations yielding more accurate results than Nightingale's RG scheme are obtained. In the 2D case the finite-size equations which give the {\it exact} values of the critical point or the critical exponent are found.

Cluster Percolation and Explicit Symmetry Breaking in Spin Models

Many features of spin models can be interpreted in geometrical terms by means of the properties of well defined clusters of spins. In case of spontaneous symmetry breaking, the phase transition of models like the q-state Potts model, O(n), etc., can be equivalently described as a percolation transition of clusters. We study here the behaviour of such clusters when the presence of an external field H breaks explicitly the global symmetry of the Hamiltonian of the theory. We find that these clusters have still some interesting relationships with thermal features of the model.
