Randomly Crosslinked Macromolecular Systems: Vulcanisation Transition to and Properties of the Amorphous Solid State

As Charles Goodyear discovered in 1839, when he first vulcanised rubber, a macromolecular liquid is transformed into a solid when a sufficient density of permanent crosslinks is introduced at random. At this continuous equi- librium phase transition, the liquid state, in which all macromolecules are delocalised, is transformed into a solid state, in which a nonzero fraction of macromolecules have spontaneously become localised. This solid state is a most unusual one: localisation occurs about mean positions that are distributed homogeneously and randomly, and to an extent that varies randomly from monomer to monomer. Thus, the solid state emerging at the vulcanisation transition is an equilibrium amorphous solid state: it is properly viewed as a solid state that bears the same relationship to the liquid and crystalline states as the spin glass state of certain magnetic systems bears to the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic states, in the sense that, like the spin glass state, it is diagnosed by a subtle order parameter. In this review we give a detailed exposition of a theoretical approach to the physical properties of systems of randomly, permanently crosslinked macromolecules. Our primary focus is on the equilibrium properties of such systems, especially in the regime of Goodyear's vulcanisation transition.

Low-Energy Excitations in an Incipient Antiferromagnet

We present fully self-consistent calculations in the fluctuation exchange approximation for the half-filled Hubbard model in 2D. A non-fermi liquid state evolves with decreasing temperature in this self-consistent model of coupled spin fluctuations and quasiparticles. The mean field phase transition to long-range antiferromagnetic order is suppressed and we find no evidence of a phase transition to long-range magnetic order. We show that the real part of the self-energy at zero energy shows a positive slope and the imaginary part of the self-energy shows a local minimum. The scale of this structure is set by the zero temperature gap in mean field theory. The growth of spin fluctuations is reflected in the evolution of sharply peaked structure in the spin fluctuation propagator around zero energy and ${\bf Q} = (π, π)$. We present calculations for the Hubbard model in 1D in a two-particle self-consistent parquet approximation. A second moment sum rule suggests that vertex corrections to the self-energy are responsible for the greater accuracy of the parquet approximation as compared to other self-consistent perturbation theories.

Imaging the Near Field

In an earlier paper we introduced the concept of the perfect lens which focuses both near and far electromagnetic fields, hence attaining perfect resolution. Here we consider refinements of the original prescription designed to overcome the limitations of imperfect materials. In particular we show that a multi-layer stack of positive and negative refractive media is less sensitive to imperfections. It has the novel property of behaving like a fibre-optic bundle but one that acts on the near field, not just the radiative component. The effects of retardation are included and minimized by making the slabs thinner. Absorption then dominates image resolution in the near-field. The deleterious effects of absorption in the metal are reduced for thinner layers.

Transitions Between Hall Plateaus and the Dimerization Transition of a Hubbard Chain

We show that the plateau transitions in the quantum Hall effect is the same as the dimerization transition of a half-filled, one dimensional, $U(2n)$ Hubbard model at $n=0$. We address the properties of the latter by a combination of perturbative renormalization group and Monte Carlo simulations. Results on both critical and off-critical properties are presented.

Peculiarities of phonon spectra and lattice heat capacity in Ir and Rh

A simple pseudopotential model is proposed, which allows the phonon spectra and temperature dependence of the lattice heat capacity of Ir and Rh be described with a high enough accuracy. A careful comparison of the calculated and experimental values of the lattice heat capacity is carried out, with the procedure of the identification of the phonon contribution to the heat capacity and determination of the characteristics (momenta) of the phonon density of states from the experimental values of the total heat capacity of metal at a constant pressure being described in detail. The results of the theoretical calculations explain, in particular, such peculiar feature of Ir and Rh, unusual for cubic metals, as a sharp (more than by a factor of 1.5) decrease in the effective Debye temperature with increasing termperature. The temperature dependence of the mean square amplitude of atomic displacements in Ir and Rh has been calculated. Basing on the band calculations the manifestation of the Kohn singularities in the phonon spectra of Ir are discussed.

Optical absorption of non-interacting tight-binding electrons in a Peierls-distorted chain at half band-filling

In this first of three articles on the optical absorption of electrons in half-filled Peierls-distorted chains we present analytical results for non-interacting tight-binding electrons. We carefully derive explicit expressions for the current operator, the dipole transition matrix elements, and the optical absorption for electrons with a cosine dispersion relation of band width $W$ and dimerization parameter $δ$. New correction (``$η$''-)terms to the current operator are identified. A broad band-to-band transition is found in the frequency range $Wδ< ω< W$ whose shape is determined by the joint density of states for the upper and lower Peierls subbands and the strong momentum dependence of the transition matrix elements.

Exact results for the optical absorption of strongly correlated electrons in a half-filled Peierls-distorted chain

In this second of three articles on the optical absorption of electrons in a half-filled Peierls-distorted chain we present exact results for strongly correlated tight-binding electrons. In the limit of a strong on-site interaction $U$ we map the Hubbard model onto the Harris-Lange model which can be solved exactly in one dimension in terms of spinless fermions for the charge excitations. The exact solution allows for an interpretation of the charge dynamics in terms of parallel Hubbard bands with a free-electron dispersion of band-width $W$, separated by the Hubbard interaction $U$. The spin degrees of freedom enter the expressions for the optical absorption only via a momentum dependent but static ground state expectation value. The remaining spin problem can be traced out exactly since the eigenstates of the Harris-Lange model are spin-degenerate. This corresponds to the Hubbard model at temperatures large compared to the spin exchange energy. Explicit results are given for the optical absorption in the presence of a lattice distortion $δ$ and a nearest-neighbor interaction $V$. We find that the optical absorption for $V=0$ is dominated by a peak at $ω=U$ and broad but weak absorption bands for $| ω-U | \leq W$. For an appreciable nearest-neighbor interaction, $V>W/2$, almost all spectral weight is transferred to Simpson's exciton band which is eventually Peierls-split.

Optical absorption of strongly correlated half-filled Mott-Hubbard chains

In this last of three articles on the optical absorption of electrons in a half-filled Peierls-distorted chain we address the dimerized extended Hubbard model in the limit of a large on-site interaction $U$. When the Hubbard interaction is large both compared to the band width $W$ and the nearest neighbor interaction $V$ the charge dynamics is properly described by the Harris-Lange model. This model can be exactly mapped onto a model of free spinless Fermions in parallel (Hubbard-)bands of width $W$ which are eventually Peierls-split. To determine the coherent absorption features at low temperatures we design and employ the ``no-recoil approximation'' in which we assume that the momentum transfer to the spin degrees of freedom can only be $Δq_S=0$ or $Δq_S=π/a$ during an optical excitation. We present explicit analytical results for the optical absorption in the presence of a lattice dimerization $δ$ and a nearest-neighbor interaction $V$ for the Néel and dimer state. We find that the coherent part of the optical absorption for $V=0$ is given by a single peak at $ω=U$ and broad but weak absorption bands for $Wδ\leq |ω-U| \leq W$. The central peak at $ω=U$ only vanishes for $δ=0$ in the Néel state. For an appreciable nearest neighbor interaction $V>W/2$ almost all spectral weight is transferred to the $Δq_C=0$-exciton and the $Δq_C=π/a$-exciton whose relative spectral weights very sensitively depend on both the lattice and the spin dimerization of the ground state.

The effects of compressible and incompressible states on the FIR-absorption of quantum wires and dots in a magnetic field

We investigate the effects of compressible and incompressible states on the FIR-absorption of quantum wires and dots in a homogeneous perpendicular magnetic field. The electron-electron interaction is treated in the Hartree approximation at a finite low temperature. The calculated dispersion of the collective excitations reproduces several experimental results.

Thermodynamics of Finite Quantum Systems: Application to Spin Magnetism II

We extend our study of thermodynamics of a Kubo particle to temperatures smaller than the interlevel spacing. We obtain the distribution functions of spin susceptibility and heat capacity for Poisson and Wigner-Dyson level statistics. We evaluate the line shape of the Knight shift due to spin effects both in a single particle and for the ensemble average and compare it with orbital and spin-orbit contributions.

Nonequilibrium Dynamics and Aging in the Three--Dimensional Ising Spin Glass Model

The low temperature dynamics of the three dimensional Ising spin glass in zero field with a discrete bond distribution is investigated via MC simulations. The thermoremanent magnetization is found to decay algebraically and the temperature dependent exponents agree very well with the experimentally determined values. The nonequilibrium autocorrelation function $C(t,t_w)$ shows a crossover at the waiting (or {\em aging}) time $t_w$ from algebraic {\em quasi-equilibrium} decay for times $t$$\ll$$t_w$ to another, faster algebraic decay for $t$$\gg$$t_w$ with an exponent similar to one for the remanent magnetization.

Yang-Baxter equation in spin chains with long range interactions

We consider the $ su(n) $ spin chains with long range interactions and the spin generalization of the Calogero-Sutherland models. We show that their properties derive from a transfer matrix obeying the Yang-Baxter equation. We obtain the expression of the conserved quantities and we diagonalize them.

Surface crossover exponent for branched polymers in two dimensions

Transfer-matrix methods on finite-width strips with free boundary conditions are applied to lattice site animals, which provide a model for randomly branched polymers in a good solvent. By assigning a distinct fugacity to sites along the strip edges, critical properties at the special (adsorption) and ordinary transitions are assessed. The crossover exponent at the adsorption point is estimated as $ϕ= 0.505 \pm 0.015$, consistent with recent predictions that $ϕ= 1/2$ exactly for all space dimensionalities.

Surface Magnetisation and Surface Correlations in Aperiodic Ising Models

We consider the surface critical behaviour of diagonally layered Ising models on the square lattice where the inter-layer couplings follow some aperiodic sequence. The surface magnetisation is analytically evaluated from a simple formula derived by the diagonal transfer matrix method, while the surface spin-spin correlations are obtained numerically by a recursion method, based on the star-triangle transformation. The surface critical behaviour of different aperiodic Ising models are found in accordance with the corresponding relevance-irrelevance criterion. For marginal sequences the critical exponents are continuously varying with the strength of aperiodicity and generally the systems follow anisotropic scaling at the critical point.

On Quantum Groups in the Hubbard Model with Phonons

The correct Hamiltonian for an extended Hubbard model with quantum group symmetry as introduced by A. Montorsi and M. Rasetti is derived for a D-dimensional lattice. It is shown that the superconducting SUq(2) holds as a true quantum symmetry only for D = 1 and that terms of higher order in the fermionic operators in addition to phonons are required for a quantum symmetric hamiltonian. The condition for quantum symmetry is "half filling" and there is no local electron-phonon coupling. A discussion of Quantum symmetries in general is given in a formalism that should be readily accessible to non Hopf-algebraists.

Directed percolation near a wall

Series expansion methods are used to study directed bond percolation clusters on the square lattice whose lateral growth is restricted by a wall parallel to the growth direction. The percolation threshold $p_c$ is found to be the same as that for the bulk. However the values of the critical exponents for the percolation probability and mean cluster size are quite different from those for the bulk and are estimated by $β_1 = 0.7338 \pm 0.0001$ and $γ_1 = 1.8207 \pm 0.0004$ respectively. On the other hand the exponent $Δ_1=β_1 +γ_1$ characterising the scale of the cluster size distribution is found to be unchanged by the presence of the wall. The parallel connectedness length, which is the scale for the cluster length distribution, has an exponent which we estimate to be $ν_{1\parallel} = 1.7337 \pm 0.0004$ and is also unchanged. The exponent $τ_1$ of the mean cluster length is related to $β_1$ and $ν_{1\parallel}$ by the scaling relation $ν_{1\parallel} = β_1 + τ_1$ and using the above estimates yields $τ_1 = 1$ to within the accuracy of our results. We conjecture that this value of $τ_1$ is exact and further support for the conjecture is provided by the direct series expansion estimate $τ_1= 1.0002 \pm 0.0003$.

Normal Ordering in the Theory of Correlation Functions of Exactly Solvable Models

We study models of quantum statistical mechanics which can be solved by the algebraic Bethe ansatz. The general method of calculation of correlation functions is based on the method of determinant representations. The auxiliary Fock space and auxiliary Bose fields are introduced in order to remove the two body scattering and represent correlation functions as a mean value of a determinant of a Fredholm integral operator; the representation has a simple form for large space and time separations. In this paper we explain how to calculate the mean value in the auxiliary Fock space of asymptotic expression of the Fredholm determinant. It is necessary for the evaluation of the asymptotic form of the physical correlation functions.
