General n-canonical divisors on two-dimensional smoothable semi-log-terminal singularities

In this paper we calculate genaral n-canonical divisors on smoothable semi-log-terminal singularities in dimension 2, in other words, the full sheaves associated to the double dual of the nth tensor power of the dualizing sheaves of these singularities. And as its application we give the inequality which bound the Gorenstein index by the local self intersection number of the n-canonical divisor of these singularities.

On the diffeomorphism groups of elliptic surfaces

In this paper we determine for relatively minimal elliptic surfaces with positive Euler number the image of the natural representation of the group of orientation preserving self-diffeomorphisms on $\Hbar$, the second homology group reduced modulo torsion. To this end we construct as many embedded spheres of square -2 such that an isometry not induced from any combination of reflections at such spheres or from 'complex conjugation' can be shown not to be induced from some diffeomorphism at all. This is done with the help of Seiberg-Witten-invariants.

The Gauss map and the dual variety of real-analytic submanifolds in a sphere or in a hyperbolic space

We study the Gauss map and the dual variety of a real-analytic immersion of a connected compact real-analytic manifold into a sphere or into a hyperbolic space. The dual variety is defined to be the set of all normal directions of the immersion. First, we show that the image of the Gauss map characterizes the manifold. Also we show that the dual variety characterizes the manifold. Besides, duality of the second fundamental form and some results on degeneration are obtained. In Algebraic Geometry E-prints eight files are tar-compressed and uuencoded.

Descent, Motives and K-theory

To an arbitrary variety over a field of characteristic zero, we associate a complex of Chow motives, which is, up to homotopy, unique and bounded. We deduce that any variety has a natural Euler characteristic in the Grothendieck group of Chow motives. We show that the cohomology with integer coefficients of any singular variety over the complex numbers has a natural weight filtration. We define algebraic K-theory with "compact supports".

Degenaration of Calabi-Yau Manifold with W-P Metric

In this paper we focus on determining for which degenerations the central fibre is at finite distance with respect to Weil-Petersson metric. We obtain a simple condition on the limiting mixed Hodge structure. Then we combine the result with the canonical mixed Hodge structure of the central fibre and obtain a simple cohomological condition for the central fibre to be at finite distance. As a corollary, we prove that a central fibre with simple nodes is at finite distance. This issue has been raised in the Physics literature including the recent development of so-called "mass-less black holes".

Modular subvarieties of arithmetic quotients of bounded symmetric domains

Arithmetic quotients are quotients of bounded symmetric domains by arithmetic groups, and modular subvarieties of arithmetic quotients are themselves arithmetic quotients of lower dimension which live on arithmetic quotients, by an embedding induced from an inclusion of groups of hermitian type. We show the existence of such modular subvarieties, drawing on earlier work of the author. If $Γ$ is a fixed arithmetic subgroup, maximal in some sense, then we introduce the notion of ``$Γ$-integral symmetric'' subgroups, which in turn defines a notion of ``integral modular subvarieties'', and we show that there are finitely many such on an (isotropic, i.e, non-compact) arithmetic variety.

Topological Classifying Spaces of Lie Algebras and the Natural Completion of Contractions

The space K^n of all n-dimensional { Lie} algebras has a natural non-Hausdorff topology k^n, which has characteristic limits, called transitions, A -> B, between distinct Lie algebras A and B. The entity of these transitions are the natural transitive completion of the well known Inonu-Wigner contractions and their partial generalizations by Saletan. Algebras containing a common ideal of codimension 1 can be characterized by homothetically normalized Jordan normal forms of one generator of their adjoint representation. For such algebras, transitions A -> B can be described by limit transitions between corresponding normal forms. The topology k^n is presented in detail for n < 5. Regarding the orientation of the algebras as vector spaces has a non-trivial effect for the corresponding topological space K^n_or: There exist both, selfdual points and pairs of dual points w.r.t. orientation reflection.

Frobenius morphisms over Z/p^2 and Bott vanishing

Let $X$ be a smooth projective algebraic variety over $Z/p$, which has a flat lift to a scheme $X'$ over $Z/p^2$. If the absolute Frobenius morphism $F$ on $X$ lifts to a morphism on $X'$, then an old trick by Mazur shows that push-down of the de Rham complex under $F$ decomposes. We show that the quasi-isomorphism in question is split. This is then applied to toric varieties (where a glueing argument gives lifting of Frobenius to $Z/p^2$) and we derive natural characteristic $p$ proofs of Bott vanishing and degeneration of the Danilov spectral sequence. For flag varieties we obtain generalizations of a result of Paranjape and Srinivas about non-lifting of Frobenius to the Witt vectors.

Quotients by Groupoids

We show that if a flat group scheme acts properly, with finite stabilizers, on an algebraic space, then a quotient exists as a separated algebraic space. More generally we show any flat groupid for which the family of stabilizers is finite has a uniform geometric, uniform categorical quotient in the category of algebraic spaces. Our argument is elementary and essentially self contained.

Generators for Symbolic Powers of Ideals Defining General Points of $P^2$

Given distinct points $p_1,\cdots,p_r$ of the projective plane $P^2$ and a positive integer $m$, the homogeneous ideal defining the fat point subscheme $Z=m(p_1+\cdots+p_r)$ is the symbolic power $I^{(m)}$ of the homogeneous ideal $I$ defining the smooth union of the $r$ points $p_1,\ldots,p_r$. If $p_1,\ldots,p_r$ are sufficiently general, it is known that the maximal rank conjecture holds for $I$; i.e., for every $d$ the multiplication map $I_1\otimes I_d\to I_{(d+1)}$ on homogeneous components has maximal rank (meaning the map is either injective or surjective). One easily sees this fails for symbolic powers of ideals defining general points; this preprint relates the failure to the occurrence of (in Nagata's terminology) uniform abnormal curves, and, for $r<10$, takes complete account of the failure, thereby completely determining the modules in a minimal free resolution of $I^{(m)}$ when $r<10$. It is also conjectured that maximal rank holds if $r>9$. Assuming this and a previous conjecture of the author, one can completely determine the modules in a minimal free resolution of $I^{(m)}$ for any $r>0$ general points and any $m>0$. The author's www site, http://www.math.unl.edu/~bharbour, makes available, in addition to plainTeX textfile and dvi versions of this preprint, a Macintosh (stuffed and bin hexed) executable and a C source textfile program which output the (conjectural for $r>9$) modules in a minimal free resolution of $I^{(m)}$ for any $r>0$ general plane points and any $m>0$. Gorenstein algebras, symmetric matrices, self-linked ideals, and symbolic powers

Inspired by recent work in the theory of central projections onto hypersurfaces, we characterize self-linked perfect ideals of grade 2 as those with a Hilbert--Burch matrix that has a maximal symmetric subblock. We also prove that every Gorenstein perfect algebra of grade 1 can be presented, as a module, by a symmetric matrix. Both results are derived from the same elementary lemma about symmetrizing a matrix that has, modulo a nonzerodivisor, a symmetric syzygy matrix. In addition, we establish a correspondence, roughly speaking, between Gorenstein perfect algebras of grade 1 that are birational onto their image, on the one hand, and self-linked perfect ideals of grade 2 that have one of the self-linking elements contained in the second symbolic power, on the other hand. Finally, we provide another characterization of these ideals in terms of their symbolic Rees algebras, and we prove a criterion for these algebras to be normal.

The weight-two Hodge structure of moduli spaces of sheaves on a K3 surface

We prove that the weight-two Hodge structure of moduli spaces of torsion-free sheaves on a K3 surface is as described by Mukai (the rank is arbitrary but we assume the first Chern class is primitive). We prove the moduli space is an irreducible symplectic variety (by Mukai's work it was known to be symplectic). By work of Beauville, this implies that its $H^2$ has a canonical integral non-degenrate quadratic form; Mukai's recepee for $H^2$ includes a description of Beauville's quadratic form. As an application we compute higher-rank Donaldson polynomials of $K3$ surfaces.

On the Brill-Noether Problem for Vector Bundles

On an arbitrary compact Riemann surface, necessary and sufficient conditions are found for the existence of semistable vector bundles with slope between zero and one and a prescribed number of linearly independent holomorphic sections. Existence is achieved by minimizing the Yang-Mills-Higgs functional.

K3 surfaces, Lorentzian Kac--Moody algebras and Mirror Symmetry

We consider the variant of Mirror Symmetry Conjecture for K3 surfaces which relates "geometry" of curves of a general member of a family of K3 with "algebraic functions" on the moduli of the mirror family. Lorentzian Kac--Moody algebras are involved in this construction. We give several examples when this conjecture is valid.
