Quantum and Thermal Depinning of a String from a Linear Defect

The problem of a massive elastic string depinning from a linear defect under the action of a small driving force is considered. To exponential accuracy the decay rate is calculated with the help of the instanton method; then, fluctuations of the quasiclassical solution are taken into account to determine the preexponential factor. The decay rate exhibits a kind of first order transition from quantum tunneling to thermal activation with vanishing crossover region. The model may be applied to describe nucleation in 2-dimensional first order quantum phase transitions.

Theory of the Breakdown of the Quantum Hall Effect

Breakdown of the Quantum Hall Effect at high values of injected current is explained as a consequence of an abrupt formation of a metallic ``river'' percolating from one edge of the sample to the other. Such river is formed when lakes of compressible liquid, where the long-range disorder potential is screened, get connected with each other due to the strong electric field. Our theory predicts critical currents consistent with experiment values and explains various features of the breakdown.

Relaxation of Surface Profiles by Evaporation Dynamics

We present simulations of the relaxation towards equilibrium of one dimensional steps and sinusoidal grooves imprinted on a surface below its roughening transition. We use a generalization of the hypercube stacking model of Forrest and Tang, that allows for temperature dependent next-nearest-neighbor interactions. For the step geometry the results at T=0 agree well with the t^(1/4) prediction of continuum theory for the spreading of the step. In the case of periodic profiles we modify the mobility for the tips of the profile and find the approximate solution of the resulting free boundary problem to be in reasonable agreement with the T=0 simulations.

Long Wavelength Anomalous Diffusion Mode in the 2D XY Dipole Magnet

In 2D XY ferromagnet the dipole force induces a strong interaction between spin-waves in the long-wavelength limit. The major effect of this interaction is the transformation of a propagating spin-wave into a diffusion mode. We study the anomalous dynamics of such diffusion modes. We find that the Janssen-De Dominics functional, which governs this dynamics, approaches the non-Gaussian fixed-point. A spin-wave propagates by an anomalous anisotropic diffusion with the dispersion relation: $iω{\sim}k_{y}^{Δ_y}$ and $iω{\sim}k_{x}^{Δ_x}$, where ${Δ_y}=47/27$ and ${Δ_x}=47/36$. The low-frequency response to the external magnetic field is found.

Magnetic susceptibility of EuTe/PbTe Heisenberg superlattices: experimental and theoretical studies

We report results on the temperature dependence of the susceptibilities of a set of MBE-grown short-period EuTe/PbTe antiferromagnetic superlattices having different EuTe layer thicknesses. In-plane and orthogonal susceptibilities have been measured and display a strong anisotropy at low temperature, confirming the occurrence of a magnetic phase transition in the thicker samples, as seen also in neutron diffraction studies. We suggest that dipolar interactions stabilize antiferromagnetic long-range order in an otherwise isotropic system and we present numerical and analytical results for the low-temperature orthogonal susceptibility.

Density of Neutral Solitons in Weakly Disordered Peierls Chains

We study the effects of weak off-diagonal disorder on Peierls systems with a doubly degenerate ground state. We show that for these systems disorder in the electron hopping amplitudes induces a finite density of solitons in the minimal-energy lattice configuration of a single chain. These disorder-induced dimerization kinks are neutral and have spin 1/2. Using a continuum model for the Peierls chain and treating the lattice classically, we analytically calculate the average free energy and density of kinks. We compare these results to numerical calculations for a discrete model and discuss the implications of the kinks for the optical and magnetic properties of the conjugated polymer trans-polyacetylene.

Density of Superfluid Helium Droplets

The classical integral cross sections of large superfluid 4He_N droplets and the number of atoms in the droplets (N=10^3-10^4) have been measured in molecular beam scattering experiments. These measurements are found to be in good agreement with the cross sections predicted from density functional calculations of the radial density distributions with a 10-90 % surface thickness of 5.7Å. By using a simple model for the density profile of the droplets a thickness of about 6-8Åis extracted directly from the data.

On the Structure of the Bose-Einstein Condensate Ground State

We construct a macroscopic wave function that describes the Bose-Einstein condensate and weakly excited states, using the su(1,1) structure of the mean-field hamiltonian, and compare this state with the experimental values of second and third order correlation functions.

Quasi-classical Approach to Bose Condensation in a Finite Potential Well

We treat the problem of self-consistently interacting bosons in the presence of a finite (but macroscopic) potential well within a quasi-classical approximation for the normal component and the order parameter. We solve the equilibrium problem and show, that actually condensation occurs in two steps. One already at low densities with Bose condensation only in the well and another one corresponding to the usual condensation in bulk. The peak and width of the distribution of trapped particles in the well display a distinct signature of the local condensation. A possible connection to recent experiments with excitons is discussed.

The Phases and Triviality of Scalar Quantum Electrodynamics

The phase diagram and critical behavior of scalar quantum electrodynamics are investigated using lattice gauge theory techniques. The lattice action fixes the length of the scalar (``Higgs'') field and treats the gauge field as non-compact. The phase diagram is two dimensional. No fine tuning or extrapolations are needed to study the theory's critical behovior. Two lines of second order phase transitions are discovered and the scaling laws for each are studied by finite size scaling methods on lattices ranging from $6^4$ through $24^4$. One line corresponds to monopole percolation and the other to a transition between a ``Higgs'' and a ``Coulomb'' phase, labelled by divergent specific heats. The lines of transitions cross in the interior of the phase diagram and appear to be unrelated. The monopole percolation transition has critical indices which are compatible with ordinary four dimensional percolation uneffected by interactions. Finite size scaling and histogram methods reveal that the specific heats on the ``Higgs-Coulomb'' transition line are well-fit by the hypothesis that scalar quantum electrodynamics is logarithmically trivial. The logarithms are measured in both finite size scaling of the specific heat peaks as a function of volume as well as in the coupling constant dependence of the specific heats measured on fixed but large lattices. The theory is seen to be qualitatively similar to $λϕ^{4}$. The standard CRAY random number generator RANF proved to be inadequate

Polymer-Chain Adsorption Transition at a Cylindrical Boundary

In a recent letter, a simple method was proposed to generate solvable models that predict the critical properties of statistical systems in hyperspherical geometries. To that end, it was shown how to reduce a random walk in $D$ dimensions to an anisotropic one-dimensional random walk on concentric hyperspheres. Here, I construct such a random walk to model the adsorption-desorption transition of polymer chains growing near an attractive cylindrical boundary such as that of a cell membrane. I find that the fraction of adsorbed monomers on the boundary vanishes exponentially when the adsorption energy decreases towards its critical value. When the adsorption energy rises beyond a certain value above the critical point whose scale is set by the radius of the cell, the adsorption fraction exhibits a crossover to a linear increase characteristic to polymers growing near planar boundaries.

Kinetics of A+B--->0 with Driven Diffusive Motion

We study the kinetics of two-species annihilation, A+B--->0, when all particles undergo strictly biased motion in the same direction and with an excluded volume repulsion between same species particles. It was recently shown that the density in this system decays as t^{-1/3}, compared to t^{-1/4} density decay in A+B--->0 with isotropic diffusion and either with or without the hard-core repulsion. We suggest a relatively simple explanation for this t^{-1/3} decay based on the Burgers equation. Related properties associated with the asymptotic distribution of reactants can also be accounted for within this Burgers equation description.

Correlations in Ising chains with non-integrable interactions

Two-spin correlations generated by interactions which decay with distance r as r^{-1-sigma} with -1 \infty, but they contain a singular structure for r/L -> 0 which can be observed by introducing magnified correlations, LC(r,L)-\sum_r C(r,L). The magnified correlations are shown to have a scaling form F(r/L) and the singular structure of F(x) for x->0 is found to be the same at all temperatures including the critical point. These conclusions are supported by the results of Monte Carlo simulations for systems with sigma =-0.50 and -0.25 both at the critical temperature T=Tc and at T=2Tc.

Pinning of a solid--liquid--vapour interface by stripes of obstacles

We use a macroscopic Hamiltonian approach to study the pinning of a solid--liquid--vapour contact line on an array of equidistant stripes of obstacles perpendicular to the liquid. We propose an estimate of the density of pinning stripes for which collective pinning of the contact line happens. This estimate is shown to be in good agreement with Langevin equation simulation of the macroscopic Hamiltonian. Finally we introduce a 2--dimensional mean field theory which for small strength of the pinning stripes and for small capillary length gives an excellent description of the averaged height of the contact line.

Method for Generating Long-Range Correlations for Large Systems

We propose a new method to generate a sequence of random numbers with long-range power-law correlations that overcomes known difficulties associated with large systems. The new method presents an improvement on the commonly-used methods. We apply the algorithm to generate enhanced diffusion, isotropic and anisotropic self-affine surfaces, and isotropic and anisotropic correlated percolation.

Equation of State of the Hard-Sphere Crystal

A new approach to the averaged two-particle distribution function of a crystalline phase is presented. It includes an indirect check of the merit of the Gaussian approximation for the local density and a new way to inferring values of the thermodynamic variables from simulation data. The equation of state and the compressibility of the hard-sphere FCC crystal is computed from Tarazona free energy density functional [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 31}, 2672 (1985)]. They are in excellent agreement with simulation results over the physical range of densities up to almost close packing. We also include the comparison with the results obtained by two other functional approaches which are also excellent.

Anomalous density dependence of static friction in sand

We measured experimentally the static friction force $F_s$ on the surface of a glass rod immersed in dry sand. We observed that $F_s$ is extremely sensitive to the closeness of packing of grains. A linear increase of the grain-density yields to an exponentially increasing friction force. We also report on a novel periodicity of $F_s$ during gradual pulling out of the rod. Our observations demonstrate the central role of grain bridges and arches in the macroscopic properties of granular packings.

Synchronization of Integrate and Fire oscillators with global coupling

In this article we study the behavior of globally coupled assemblies of a large number of Integrate and Fire oscillators with excitatory pulse-like interactions. On some simple models we show that the additive effects of pulses on the state of Integrate and Fire oscillators are sufficient for the synchronization of the relaxations of all the oscillators. This synchronization occurs in two forms depending on the system: either the oscillators evolve ``en bloc'' at the same phase and therefore relax together or the oscillators do not remain in phase but their relaxations occur always in stable avalanches. We prove that synchronization can occur independently of the convexity or concavity of the oscillators evolution function. Furthermore the presence of disorder, up to some level, is not only compatible with synchronization, but removes some possible degeneracy of identical systems and allows new mechanisms towards this state.
