The International Linear Collider

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is a proposed electron-positron collider for the centre-of-mass energy range of 200 to 500 GeV and with upgrade options towards 1 TeV. The ILC would be the ideal tool to explore with high precision the properties of the new Higgs-like particle that has recently been discovered at the LHC with a mass of around 125 GeV. The ILC accelerator design is based on the mature superconducting technology that has been developed in the TESLA collaboration and that is currently being used for the European XFEL. The exploitation of the huge physics potential of the ILC is a challenge for the design of the ILC detectors.

Distinguishing the Color Octet Axial-Vector-like Particle for Top Quark Asymmetry via Color Flow Method at the LHC

The excess in top quark forward-backward asymmetry has been a hot topic in recent years. Although there are many proposals to explain it, most of them can not fit the differential distributions well. The color octet axial-vector like particle, with mass near the top quark pair threshold, is still a good description of the differential distributions. We study how to distinguish the color singlet and octet mediating particles in top quark pair production by adopting the color flow method. For the first time, we show that such a proposal for the froward-backward asymmetry can be cross-checked indirectly at the LHC.

Searching for GeV-scale new Gauge Bosons in QGP thermal dilepton production

In this paper we propose to use the measurement of the thermal Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) dilepton spectra in the Intermediate Mass Region (IMR) of heavy-ion collisions, as a new method to search for GeV-scale dark gauge bosons (gamma' or Z'). Such light mediators are a common feature of light (i.e. low mass) dark matter scenarios, which have been invoked to explain puzzling signals in dark matter indirect and direct detection experiments. First we show that a light gamma' or Z' will generate a resonant enhancement of the dilepton spectrum produced thermally by the QGP, at an energy corresponding to the dark gauge boson mass. Secondly, using data from the PHENIX experiment, we are able to set an upper limit on the combined coupling of this new gauge boson to quarks and leptons (independently of their vectorial or axial nature) chi_q chi_e < 10^(-3) at the 95% confidence level for a gauge boson mass in the range 1.5 - 2.5 GeV. This result complements previous searches for new light gauge bosons and probes a new region of the parameter space, particularly interesting in the case of non-universal couplings to quarks and leptons. Prospects for the discovery of such a boson by the ALICE collaboration are also discussed.

Measurement of charm fragmentation fractions in photoproduction at HERA

The production of D^0, D^*+, D^+, D_s+ and Lambda_c^+ charm hadrons and their antiparticles in ep scattering at HERA has been studied with the ZEUS detector, using a total integrated luminosity of 372 pb^-1. The fractions of charm quarks hadronising into a particular charm hadron were derived. In addition, the ratio of neutral to charged D-meson production rates, the fraction of charged D mesons produced in a vector state, and the stangeness-suppression factor have been determined. The measurements have been performed in the photoproduction regime. The charm hadrons were reconstructed in the range of transverse momentum p_T >3.8 GeV and pseudorapidity |eta|<1.6. The charm fragmentation fractions are compared to previous results from HERA and from e+e-experiments. The data support the hypothesis that fragmentation is independent of the production process.

Quark nuggets search using 2350 Kg gravitational waves aluminum bar detectors

The gravitational wave resonant detectors can be used as detectors of quark nuggets, like nuclearites (nuclear matter with a strange quark). This search has been carried out using data from two 2350 Kg, 2 K cooled, aluminum bar detectors: NAUTILUS, located in Frascati (Italy), and EXPLORER, that was located in CERN Geneva (CH). Both antennas are equipped with cosmic ray shower detectors: signals in the bar due to showers are continuously detected and used to characterize the antenna performances. The bar excitation mechanism is based on the so called thermo-acoustic effect, studied on dedicated experiments that use particle beams. This mechanism predicts that vibrations of bars are induced by the heat deposited in the bar from the particle. The geometrical acceptance of the bar detectors is 19.5 $\rm m^2$ sr, that is smaller than that of other detectors used for similar searches. However, the detection mechanism is completely different and is more straightforward than in other detectors. We will show the results of ten years of data from NAUTILUS (2003-2012) and 7 years from EXPLORER (2003-2009). The experimental limits we obtain are of interest because, for nuclearites of mass less than $10^{-4}$ grams, we find a flux smaller than that one predicted considering nuclearites as dark matter candidates.

Top quark property measurements at the Tevatron

We review recent measurements of the properties of the top quark by the CDF and D0 experiments: the mass and decay width of the top quark, the ratio $R=\btwb/\btwq$, the total production cross section of \ttbar\ pairs, the helicity of the $W$ boson, anomalous couplings at the $Wtb$ vertex, the asymmetry of $\ttbar$ production due to the colour charge, and the first study of the top quark polarisation. The measurements are performed using data samples of up to 8.7 \fb\ acquired by the CDF and D0 experiments in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron $p\bar p$ collider at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt s=1.96 \TeV$.

Measurement of gamma using B -> K pi pi and B -> K K Kbar decays

The BaBar measurements of the Dalitz plots for B0 -> K+ pi0 pi-, B0 -> K0 pi+ pi-, B+ -> K+ pi+ pi-, B0 -> K+ K0 K-, and B0 -> K0 K0 Kbar0 decays are used to cleanly extract the weak phase gamma. We find four possible solutions: $(31^{+2}_{-3})^\circ$, $(77 \pm 3)^\circ$, $(258^{+4}_{-3})^\circ$, and $(315^{+3}_{-2})^\circ$. One solution -- $(77 \pm 3)^\circ$ -- is consistent with the SM. Its error, which includes leading-order flavor-SU(3) breaking, is far smaller than that obtained using two-body B decays.

SuperB Technical Design Report

In this Technical Design Report (TDR) we describe the SuperB detector that was to be installed on the SuperB e+e- high luminosity collider. The SuperB asymmetric collider, which was to be constructed on the Tor Vergata campus near the INFN Frascati National Laboratory, was designed to operate both at the Upsilon(4S) center-of-mass energy with a luminosity of 10^{36} cm^{-2}s^{-1} and at the tau/charm production threshold with a luminosity of 10^{35} cm^{-2}s^{-1}. This high luminosity, producing a data sample about a factor 100 larger than present B Factories, would allow investigation of new physics effects in rare decays, CP Violation and Lepton Flavour Violation. This document details the detector design presented in the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) in 2007. The R&D and engineering studies performed to arrive at the full detector design are described, and an updated cost estimate is presented. A combination of a more realistic cost estimates and the unavailability of funds due of the global economic climate led to a formal cancelation of the project on Nov 27, 2012.

Recent results on hadron physics at KLOE

One of the basic motivations of the KLOE and KLOE-2 collaborations is the test of fundamental symmetries and the search for phenomena beyond the Standard Model via the hadronic and leptonic decays of ground-state mesons and via their production in the fusion of virtual gamma quanta exchanged between colliding electrons and positrons. This contribution includes brief description of results of recent analysis of the KLOE data aimed at (i) the search for the dark matter boson, (ii) determination of the hadronic and light-by-light contributions to the g-2 muon anomaly and (iii) tests of QCD anomalies.

PINGU Sensitivity to the Neutrino Mass Hierarchy

The neutrino mass hierarchy is one of the few remaining unknown parameters in the neutrino sector and hence a primary focus of the experimental community. The Precision IceCube Next Generation Upgrade (PINGU) experiment, to be co-located with the IceCube DeepCore detector in the deep Antarctic glacier, is being designed to provide a first definitive measurement of the mass hierarchy. We have conducted feasibility studies for the detector design that demonstrate a statistically-limited sensitivity to the hierarchy of 2.1 sigma to 3.4 sigma per year is possible, depending on the detector geometry (20 to 40 strings) and analysis efficiencies. First studies of the effects of systematic and theoretical uncertainties show limited impact on the overall sensitivity to the hierarchy. Assuming deployment of the first array elements in the 2016/17 austral summer season a 3 sigma measurement of the hierarchy is anticipated with PINGU in 2020.

Scale-Invariant Resonance Tagging in Multijet Final States

In this contribution, we study the resonant pair production of heavy particles in hadronic final states using jet substructure techniques. We discuss a recently proposed resonance tagging strategy, which interpolates between the highly boosted and fully resolved regimes, leading to uniform signal efficiencies and background rejection rates for a broad range of masses. With this method, one can efficiently replace independent experimental searches, based on different final state topologies, with a single common analysis. We show using this strategy that the LHC has sensitivity to the enhanced resonant production of Higgs boson pairs decaying into $b\bar{b}$ pairs in generic New Physics scenarios.

Charmed mesons and leptons from semileptonic decays at the LHC

We discuss production of charmed mesons as well as electrons/muons from semileptonic decays of charm and bottom mesons in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The cross section for inclusive production of $c \bar c$ and $b \bar b$ pairs is calculated in the framework of the $k_{\perp}$-factorization approach. Here, the KMR and Jung CCFM unintegrated gluon distribution functions are used. Theoretical uncertainties of the model related to the choice of renormalization and factorization scales as well as due to the quark mass are also discussed. The hadronization of charm and bottom quarks is included within the fragmentation functions technique. Inclusive differential distributions in transverse momentum of charmed mesons are presented and compared to recent results of the ALICE collaboration. Furthermore, we also consider production of different $D \bar D$ pairs in unique kinematics of forward rapidities of the LHCb experiment. Kinematical correlations in azimuthal angle $φ_{D\bar D}$ and invariant mass $M_{D \bar D}$ distributions are presented and compared to LHCb data. Furthermore, the semileptonic decays of charm and bottom mesons are done with the help of decay functions found by fitting recent semileptonic data obtained by the CLEO and BABAR collaborations. Inclusive differential distributions in transverse momentum of leptons for several kinematical regions are presented and compared to recent results of the ALICE and CMS collaborations.

Production of two $c \bar c$ pairs in double-parton scattering within $k_t$-factorization

We discuss production of two pairs of $c \bar c$ in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. Both double-parton scattering (DPS) and single-parton scattering (SPS) contributions are included in the analysis. Each step of DPS is calculated within $k_t$-factorization approach. The conditions how to identify the DPS contribution are presented. The discussed mechanism leads to the production of pairs of mesons: each containing $c$ quarks or each containing $\bar c$ antiquarks. We discuss corresponding production rates and some differential distributions for $(D^0 D^0$ + $\bar D^0 \bar D^0)$ production. Within large theoretical uncertainties the predicted DPS cross section is fairly similar to the cross section measured recently by the LHCb collaboration. The best description is obtained with the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin (KMR) unintegrated gluon distribution. The contribution of SPS, calculated in the high-energy approximation, turned out to be rather small. Finally, we emphasize significant contribution of DPS mechanism to inclusive charmed meson spectra measured recently by ALICE, ATLAS and LHCb.

Moriond QCD 2013 Experimental Summary

The article presents experimental highlights of Moriond 2013 QCD conference. This was fantastic conference and the first Moriond QCD since the discovery of the Higgs boson. Many new results about its properties have been presented at the conference with Higgs-like particle becoming a Higgs as it properties match expected for the Higgs boson pretty well. There were many new results presented in all experimental areas including QCD, elecroweak, studies of the top, bottom and charm quarks, searches for physics beyond Standard Model as well as studies of the heavy ion collisions. 56 experimental talks have been presented at the conference and it is impossible to cover each result in the summary, so highlights are limited to what I was able to present in my summary talk presented on March 16 2013. The proceedings of the conference cover in depth all talks presented and I urge you to get familiar with all of them. Theoretical Summary of the conference was given by Michelangelo Mangano, so theory talks are not covered in the article.

IP-Sat: Impact-Parameter dependent Saturation model; revised

In this talk, we present a global analysis of available small-x data on inclusive DIS and exclusive diffractive processes, including the latest data from the combined HERA analysis on reduced cross sections within the Impact-Parameter dependent Saturation (IP-Sat) Model. The impact-parameter dependence of dipole amplitude is crucial in order to have a unified description of both inclusive and exclusive diffractive processes. With the parameters of model fixed via a fit to the high-precision reduced cross-section, we compare model predictions to data for the structure functions, the longitudinal structure function, the charm structure function, exclusive vector mesons production and Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS). Excellent agreement is obtained for the processes considered at small x in a wide range of Q^2.

Transverse spin asymmetries at COMPASS: beyond Collins and Sivers effects

One of the important objectives of the COMPASS experiment (SPS, CERN) \cite{Abbon:2007pq} is the exploration of the transverse spin structure of the nucleon via spin dependent azimuthal asymmetries in single-hadron production in deep inelastic scattering of polarized leptons off transversely polarized targets. For this purpose a series of measurements were made in COMPASS, using 160 GeV/c longitudinally polarized muon beam and transversely polarized $^6LiD$ (in 2002, 2003 and 2004) and $NH_3$ (in 2007 and 2010) targets. In the past few years considerable theoretical interest and experimental efforts were focused on the study of Collins and Sivers transverse spin asymmetries. The experimental results obtained so far play an important role in the general understanding of the three-dimensional nature of the nucleon in terms of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions. In addition to these two measured leading-twist effects, the SIDIS cross-section includes six more target transverse spin dependent azimuthal asymmetries, which have their own well defined leading or higher-twist interpretation in terms of QCD parton model. COMPASS preliminary results for these six "beyond Collins and Sivers" asymmetries, obtained from transversely polarized deuteron and proton data have been presented at the previous conferences \cite{Parsamyan:2007ju} - \cite{Parsamyan:2013ug}. In this review we focus on the results obtained with the last "proton-2010" data sample.

Helium Compton Form Factor Measurements at CLAS

The distribution of the parton content of nuclei, as encoded via the generalized parton distributions (GPDs), can be accessed via the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) process contributing to the cross section for leptoproduction of real photons. Similarly to the scattering of light by a material, DVCS provides information about the dynamics and the spatial structure of hadrons. The sensitivity of this process to the lepton beam polarization allows to single-out the DVCS amplitude in terms of Compton form factors that contain GPDs information. The beam spin asymmetry of the $^4$He($\vec {\mathrm e}$,e$' γ^4$He) process was measured in the experimental Hall B of the Jefferson Laboratory to extract the real and imaginary parts of the twist-2 Compton form factor of the $^4$He nucleus. The experimental results reported here demonstrate the relevance of this method for such a goal, and suggest the dominance of the Bethe-Heitler amplitude to the unpolarized process in the kinematic range explored by the experiment.
