Community-detection cellular automata with local and long-range connectivity

We explore a community-detection cellular automata algorithm inspired by human heuristics, based on information diffusion and a non-linear processing phase with a dynamics inspired by human heuristics. The main point of the methods is that of furnishing different "views" of the clustering levels from an individual point of view. We apply the method to networks with local connectivity and long-range rewiring.

LICORS: Light Cone Reconstruction of States for Non-parametric Forecasting of Spatio-Temporal Systems

We present a new, non-parametric forecasting method for data where continuous values are observed discretely in space and time. Our method, "light-cone reconstruction of states" (LICORS), uses physical principles to identify predictive states which are local properties of the system, both in space and time. LICORS discovers the number of predictive states and their predictive distributions automatically, and consistently, under mild assumptions on the data source. We provide an algorithm to implement our method, along with a cross-validation scheme to pick control settings. Simulations show that CV-tuned LICORS outperforms standard methods in forecasting challenging spatio-temporal dynamics. Our work provides applied researchers with a new, highly automatic method to analyze and forecast spatio-temporal data.

Continuum versus Discrete: A Physically Interpretable General Rule For Cellular Automata By Means of Modular Arithmetic

Describing complex phenomena by means of cellular automata (CA) has shown to be a very effective approach in pure and applied sciences. In fact, the number of published papers concerning this topic has tremendously increased over the last twenty years. Most of the applications, notwithstanding, use cellular automata to qualitatively describe the phenomena, which is surely a consequence of the way the automata rules have been defined. In the present paper a general rule which describes every of Wolfram's cellular automata is derived. The new representation is given in terms of a new function hereby defined, the iota-delta function. The latter function is further generalized in order to provide a general rule for not only Wolfram's but also to every CA rule which depends on the sum and products of the values of cells in the automaton mesh. By means of a parallel between the finite difference method and the iota-delta function, the new representation provides a straightforward physical interpretation of CA, which gives, for the first time, a quantitative interpretation of the generating rule itself. By means of the new formulation, advective-diffusive phenomena are analyzed. In particular, the relation between CA automata and anomalous diffusion is briefly discussed.

Entropy rate of higher-dimensional cellular automata

We introduce the entropy rate of multidimensional cellular automata. This number is invariant under shift-commuting isomorphisms; as opposed to the entropy of such CA, it is always finite. The invariance property and the finiteness of the entropy rate result from basic results about the entropy of partitions of multidimensional cellular automata. We prove several results that show that entropy rate of 2-dimensional automata preserve similar properties of the entropy of one dimensional cellular automata. In particular we establish an inequality which involves the entropy rate, the radius of the cellular automaton and the entropy of the d-dimensional shift. We also compute the entropy rate of permutative bi-dimensional cellular automata and show that the finite value of the entropy rate (like the standard entropy of for one-dimensional CA) depends on the number of permutative sites. Finally we define the topological entropy rate and prove that it is an invariant for topological shift-commuting conjugacy and establish some relations between topological and measure-theoretic entropy rates.

Modeling the desired direction in a force-based model for pedestrian dynamics

We introduce an enhanced model based on the generalized centrifugal force model. Furthermore, the desired direction of pedestrians is investigated. A new approach leaning on the well-known concept of static and dynamic floor-fields in cellular automata is presented. Numerical results of the model are presented and compared with empirical data.

Probabilistic cellular automata and random fields with i.i.d. directions

Let us consider the simplest model of one-dimensional probabilistic cellular automata (PCA). The cells are indexed by the integers, the alphabet is {0, 1}, and all the cells evolve synchronously. The new content of a cell is randomly chosen, independently of the others, according to a distribution depending only on the content of the cell itself and of its right neighbor. There are necessary and sufficient conditions on the four parameters of such a PCA to have a Bernoulli product invariant measure. We study the properties of the random field given by the space-time diagram obtained when iterating the PCA starting from its Bernoulli product invariant measure. It is a non-trivial random field with very weak dependences and nice combinatorial properties. In particular, not only the horizontal lines but also the lines in any other direction consist in i.i.d. random variables. We study extensions of the results to Markovian invariant measures, and to PCA with larger alphabets and neighborhoods.

Classification of two-dimensional binary cellular automata with respect to surjectivity

While the surjectivity of the global map in two-dimensional cellular automata (2D CA) is undecidable in general, in specific cases one can often decide if the rule is surjective or not. We attempt to classify as many 2D CA as possible by using a sequence of tests based on the balance theorem, injectivity of the restriction to finite configurations, as well as permutivity. We introduce the notion of slice permutivity which is shown to imply surjectivity in 2D CA. The tests are applied to 2D binary CA with neighbourhoods consisting of up to five sites, considering all possible contiguous shapes of the neighbourhood. We find that if the size of the neighbourhood is less than five, complete classification of all rules is possible. Among 5-site rules, those with von Neuman neighbourhoods as well as neighbourhoods corresponding to T, V, and Z pentominos can also be completely classified.

Stochastic dynamics of dengue epidemics

We use a stochastic Markovian dynamics approach to describe the spreading of vector-transmitted diseases, like dengue, and the threshold of the disease. The coexistence space is composed by two structures representing the human and mosquito populations. The human population follows a susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) type dynamics and the mosquito population follows a susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) type dynamics. The human infection is caused by infected mosquitoes and vice-versa so that the SIS and SIR dynamics are interconnected. We develop a truncation scheme to solve the evolution equations from which we get the threshold of the disease and the reproductive ratio. The threshold of the disease is also obtained by performing numerical simulations. We found that for certain values of the infection rates the spreading of the disease is impossible whatever is the death rate of infected mosquito.

Wolfram's Classification and Computation in Cellular Automata Classes III and IV

We conduct a brief survey on Wolfram's classification, in particular related to the computing capabilities of Cellular Automata (CA) in Wolfram's classes III and IV. We formulate and shed light on the question of whether Class III systems are capable of Turing universality or may turn out to be "too hot" in practice to be controlled and programmed. We show that systems in Class III are indeed capable of computation and that there is no reason to believe that they are unable, in principle, to reach Turing-completness.

An analytical formulation for roughness based on celular automata

We present a method to derive the analytical expression of the roughness of a fractal surface whose dynamics is ruled by cellular automata. Starting from the automata, we write down the the time derivative of the height's average and variance. By assuming the equiprobability of the surface configurations and taking the limit of large substrates we find the roughness as a function of time. As expected, the function behaves as $t^β$ when $t\ll t_\times$ and saturate at $w_s$ when $t\gg t_\times$. We apply the methodology to describe the etching model \citep{Bernardo}, however, the value of $β$ we obtained are not the one predicted by the KPZ equation and observed in numerical experiments. That divergence may be due to the equiprobability assumption. We redefine the roughness with an exponent that compensate the nonuniform probability generated by the celular automata, resulting in an expression that perfectly matches the experimental results.

Finite Random Domino Automaton

Finite version of Random Domino Automaton (FRDA) - recently proposed a toy model of earthquakes - is investigated. Respective set of equations describing stationary state of the FRDA is derived and compared with infinite case. It is shown that for the system of big size, these equations are coincident with RDA equations. We demonstrate a non-existence of exact equations for size N bigger then 4 and propose appropriate approximations, the quality of which is studied in examples obtained within Markov chains framework. We derive several exact formulas describing properties of the automaton, including time aspects. In particular, a way to achieve a quasi-periodic like behaviour of RDA is presented. Thus, based on the same microscopic rule - which produces exponential and inverse-power like distributions - we extend applicability of the model to quasi-periodic phenomena.

On Cellular Automata Models of Traffic Flow with Look-Ahead Potential

We study the statistical properties of a cellular automata model of traffic flow with the look-ahead potential. The model defines stochastic rules for the movement of cars on a lattice. We analyze the underlying statistical assumptions needed for the derivation of the coarse-grained model and demonstrate that it is possible to relax some of them to obtain an improved coarse-grained ODE model. We also demonstrate that spatial correlations play a crucial role in the presence of the look-ahead potential and propose a simple empirical correction to account for the spatial dependence between neighboring cells.

Pedestrian Flow Models with Slowdown Interactions

In this paper, we introduce and study one-dimensional models for the behavior of pedestrians in a narrow street or corridor. We begin at the microscopic level by formulating a stochastic cellular automata model with explicit rules for pedestrians moving in two opposite directions. Coarse-grained mesoscopic and macroscopic analogs are derived leading to the coupled system of PDEs for the density of the pedestrian traffic. The obtained PDE system is of a mixed hyperbolic-elliptic type and therefore, we rigorously derive higher-order nonlinear diffusive corrections for the macroscopic PDE model. We perform numerical experiments, which compare and contrast the behavior of the microscopic stochastic model and the resulting coarse-grained PDEs for various parameter settings and initial conditions. We also demonstrate that the nonlinear diffusion is essential for reproducing the behavior of the stochastic system in the nonhyperbolic regime.

Turing Patterns with Turing Machines: Emergence and Low-level Structure Formation

Despite having advanced a reaction-diffusion model of ODE's in his 1952 paper on morphogenesis, reflecting his interest in mathematical biology, Alan Turing has never been considered to have approached a definition of Cellular Automata. However, his treatment of morphogenesis, and in particular a difficulty he identified relating to the uneven distribution of certain forms as a result of symmetry breaking, are key to connecting his theory of universal computation with his theory of biological pattern formation. Making such a connection would not overcome the particular difficulty that Turing was concerned about, which has in any case been resolved in biology. But instead the approach developed here captures Turing's initial concern and provides a low-level solution to a more general question by way of the concept of algorithmic probability, thus bridging two of his most important contributions to science: Turing pattern formation and universal computation. I will provide experimental results of one-dimensional patterns using this approach, with no loss of generality to a n-dimensional pattern generalisation.

Cyclic Network Automata and Cohomological Waves

This paper considers a dynamic coverage problem for sensor networks that are sufficiently dense but not localized. Only a small fraction of sensors may be in an awake state at any given time. The goal is to find a decentralized protocol for establishing dynamic, sweeping barriers of awake-state sensors. Following Baryshnikov-Coffman-Kwak, we use network cyclic cellular automata to generate waves. This paper gives a rigorous analysis of network-based cyclic cellular automata in the context of a system of narrow hallways and shows that waves of awake-state nodes turn corners and automatically solve pusuit/evasion-type problems without centralized coordination. As a corollary of this work, we unearth some interesting topological interpretations of features previously observed in cyclic cellular automata (CCA). By considering CCA over networks and completing to simplicial complexes, we induce dynamics on the higher-dimensional complex. In this setting, waves are seen to be generated by topological defects with a nontrivial degree (or winding number). The simplicial complex has the topological type of the underlying map of the workspace (a subset of the plane), and the resulting waves can be classified cohomologically. This allows one to "program" pulses in the sensor network according to cohomology class. We give a realization theorem for such pulse waves.

An explanation of the shape of the universal curve of the Scaling Law for the Earthquake Recurrence Time Distributions

This paper presents an explanation of a possible mechanism underlying the shape of the universal curve of Scaling Law for Earthquake Recurrence Time Distributions. The presented simple stochastic cellular automaton model is reproducing the gamma distribution fit with the proper value of the parameter $γ$ characterizing Earth's seismicity and also imitates a deviation from the fit at the short interevent times, as observed in real data. Thus the model suggests an explanation of the universal pattern of rescaled Earthquake Recurrence Time Distributions in terms of combinatorial rules for accumulation and abrupt release of seismic energy.

Cellular Automata Based Model for Pedestrian Dynamics

We construct a two dimensional Cellular Automata based model for the description of pedestrian dynamics. Wide range of complicated pattern formation phenomena in pedestrian dynamics are described in the model, e.g. lane formation, jams in a counterflow and egress behavior. Mean-field solution of the densely populated case and numerical solution of the sparsely populated case are provided. This model has the potential to describe more flow phenomena.

Kolmogorov Complexity and the Garden of Eden Theorem

Suppose $τ$ is a cellular automaton over an amenable group and a finite alphabet. Celebrated Garden of Eden theorem states, that pre-injectivity of $τ$ is equivalent to non-existence of Garden of Eden configuration. In this paper we will prove, that imposing some mild restrictions, we could add another equivalent assertion: non-existence of Garden of Eden configuration is equivalent to preservation of asymptotic Kolmogorov complexity under the action of cellular automaton. It yields a characterisation of the cellular automata, which preserve the asymptotic Kolmogorov complexity.
