CESR Test Accelerator

The Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) was reconfigured in 2008 as a test accelerator to investigate the physics of ultra-low emittance damping rings. During the approximately 40 days/year available for dedicated operation as a test accelerator, specialized instrumentation is used to measure growth and mitigation of the electron cloud, emittance growth due to electron cloud, intra-beam scattering, and ions, and single and multi-bunch instabilities generated by collective effects. The flexibility of the CESR guide field optics and the integration of accelerator modeling codes with the control system have made possible an extraordinary range of experiments. Findings at CesrTA with respect to electron cloud effects, emittance tuning techniques, and beam instrumentation for measuring electron cloud, beam sizes, and beam positions are the basis for much of the design of the ILC damping rings as documented in the ILC-Technical Design Report. The program has allowed the Cornell group to cultivate the kind of talent and expertise that will be absolutely essential to the final engineering design, and commissioning of the damping rings for a linear collider.

Comments on "Wall-plug (AC) power consumption of a very high energy e+/e- storage ring collider" by Marc Ross

The paper arXiv:1308.0735 questions some of the technical assumptions made by the TLEP Steering Group when estimating in arXiv:1305.6498 the power requirement for the very high energy e+e- storage ring collider TLEP. We show that our assumptions are based solidly on CERN experience with LEP and the LHC, as well accelerators elsewhere, and confirm our earlier baseline estimate of the TLEP power consumption.

New Method to Improve the Accelerating Gradient of Superconducting Cavity

Quench is a common phenomenon in a superconducting cavity and often limits the accelerating gradient of the cavity. Accurate location of the quench site can be located by second sound detection. For multi-cell superconducting cavity, one defect may cause the cell with defect quenches and then the whole cavity quenches. Now we proposed a new method to eliminate the bad influence of the quench cell to the whole cavity.

Luminosity Upgrades for ILC

The possibility of increasing the luminosity for the ILC at Ecm < 350 GeV centre-of-mass by increasing the beam power are considered. It will be shown that an approximately constant luminosity can be achieved across the centre of mass energy range (250-500 GeV) without exceeding the installed AC power for 500 GeV operation. Overall a factor of four in luminosity over the published baseline could be achieved at 250 GeV resulting in 3*10**34 cm-2s-1. The implications for the damping rings and positron source are also briefly discussed.

High Intensity Secondary Beams Driven by Protons

As part of the Intensity Frontier effort within the 2013 Community Summer Study, a workshop on the proton machine capabilities was held (High Intensity Secondary Beams Driven by Proton Beams) April 17-20, 2013 at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY. Primary aims of the workshop were to understand: 1) the beam requirements for proposed high intensity proton beam based measurements; 2) the capabilities of existing world-wide high power proton machines; 3) proton facility upgrade plans and proposals for new facilities; 4) and to document the R&D needs for proton accelerators and target systems needed to support proposed intensity frontier measurements. These questions are addressed in this summary.

Comments on photon colliders for Snowmass 2013

For more than 30 years [1], gamma-gamma and gamma-electron photon colliders have been considered a natural addition to e+e- linear-collider projects. Following the recent discovery of the Higgs boson, the physics community has been actively considering various approaches to building a Higgs factory, a photon collider (with or without e+e-) being one of them. In this note, following a brief discuss of photon colliders based on ILC and CLIC, I give a critical overview of the recently proposed photon-collider Higgs factories with no e+e- collision option.

Development of A Modified Quasi-periodic Undulator for HLS

A modified quasi periodic undulator (QPU) is developed and to be installed at Hefei Light Source (HLS).Magnet dimensions optimization is applied. High harmonics contamination is eliminated from the fundamental emission effectively according to the field tests. The depression ratio of 3rd harmonic is increased by an order of magnitude than the current device with other harmonics well reduced simultaneously. The significance of the modification measure is verified practically. The design, measurement and commissioning of the device is described.

Progress on the Construction of the 100 MeV / 100 kW Electron Linac for the NSC KIPT Neutron Source

IHEP, China is constructing a 100 MeV / 100 kW electron Linac for NSC KIPT, Ukraine. This linac will be used as the driver of a neutron source based on a subcritical assembly. In 2012, the injector part of the accelerator was pre-installed as a testing facility in the experimental hall #2 of IHEP. The injector beam and key hardware testing results were met the design goal. Recently, the injector testing facility was disassembled and all of the components for the whole accelerator have been shipped to Ukraine from China by ocean shipping. The installation of the whole machine in KIPT will be started in June, 2013. The construction progress, the design and testing results of the injector beam and key hardware are presented.

Experimental study of plasma window

Plasma window is an advanced apparatus which can work as the interface between vacuum and high pressure region. It can be used in many applications which need atmosphere-vacuum interface, such as gas target, electron beam welding, synchrotron radiation and spallation neutron source. A test bench of plasma window is constructed in Peking University. A series of experiments and corresponding parameter measurements have been presented in this article. The experiment result indicates the feasibility of such a facility acting as an interface between vacuum and high pressure region.

Dispersion based beam tilt correction

In Free Electron Lasers (FEL), a transverse centroid misalignment of longitudinal slices in an electron bunch reduces the effective overlap between radiation field and electron bunch and therefore the FEL performance. The dominant sources of slice misalignments for FELs are the incoherent and coherent synchrotron radiation within bunch compressors as well as transverse wake fields in the accelerating cavities. This is of particular importance for over-compression which is required for one of the key operation modes for the SwissFEL planned at the Paul Scherrer Institute. The centroid shift is corrected using corrector magnets in dispersive sections, e.g. the bunch compressors. First and second order corrections are achieved by pairs of sextupole and quadrupole magnets in the horizontal plane while skew quadrupoles correct to first order in the vertical plane. Simulations and measurements at the SwissFEL Injector Test Facility are done to investigate the proposed correction scheme for SwissFEL. This paper presents the methods and results obtained.

Quartz Plate Calorimetry for CMS HE Upgrade

Analysis of the CMS data and the simulation prediction based on these results indicate that the performance of the current scintillators in the CMS Hadron Endcap Calorimeter (HE) tiles will degrade dramatically in the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) era. In order to continue the physics program in this region, the HE tiles will need to be replaced. The new tiles should have comparable/improved performance, be radiation hard, reliable and robust.

A complete demonstrator of a muon cooled Higgs factory

The recent discovery of the Higgs particle of 125 GeV has revised the interest of the so-called Higgs factory, namely of a mu+mu- collider with adequately cooled intensity of about 6 10^12 muons of each sign, a repetition rate of 15-50 p/s and a luminosity of up to 10^32 cm-2 s-1. The process is the direct production of a H_0 scalar in the s-state. Its partial widths can be studied in clean conditions and with remarkable accuracy. The Ho mass itself can be measured to about +-100 keV (deltaE/E <10^-6) in the (WW) channel with the help of the decay frequency of the polarized mu->e nu nu decay electrons. The realization of a cascade of unconventional but very small rings of few meters radius is described, in order to achieve the required longitudinal and transverse emittances. Physics requirements and the many studies already undertaken suggest that the next step, prior to but adequate for a H_0 physics programme, could be the practical realization of a full scale muon cooling demonstrator. The correct operation of the demonstrator may be initially explored with the help of very low intensity muon beam already available in a number of different accelerators. The additional but relatively conventional components necessary to realize the facility with the appropriate luminosity should be constructed only after the success of this initial cooling experiment has been conclusively demonstrated. The ultimate mu+mu- collider for a Higgs Factory can be situated within the existing CERN or FNAL sites.

Towards Zeptosecond-Scale Pulses from X-Ray Free-Electron Lasers

The short wavelength and high peak power of the present generation of free-electron lasers (FELs) opens the possibility of ultra-short pulses even surpassing the present (tens to hundreds of attoseconds) capabilities of other light sources - but only if x-ray FELs can be made to generate pulses consisting of just a few optical cycles. For hard x-ray operation (~0.1nm), this corresponds to durations of approximately a single attosecond, and below into the zeptosecond scale. This talk will describe a novel method to generate trains of few-cycle pulses, at GW peak powers, from existing x-ray FEL facilities by using a relatively short 'afterburner'. Such pulses would enhance research opportunity in atomic dynamics and push capability towards the investigation of electronic-nuclear and nuclear dynamics. The corresponding multi-colour spectral output, with a bandwidth envelope increased by up to two orders of magnitudes over SASE, also has potential applications.

Experimental measurement methods and data on irradiation of functional design materials by helium ions in linear accelerator

The experimental research on the irradiation of the functional design materials by the Helium ions in the linear accelerator is conducted. The experimental measurements techniques and data on the irradiation of the functional design materials by the Helium ions with the energy up to 4 MeV, including the detailed scheme of experimental measurements setup, are presented. The new design of accelerating structure of the IH-type such as POS-4, using the method of alternate-phase focusing with the step-by-step change of the synchronous phase along the focusing periods in a linear accelerator, is developed with the aim to irradiate the functional design materials by the Helium ions. The new design of the injector of the charged Helium ions with the energy of 120 KeV at the output of an accelerating tube and the accelerating structure of the type of POS-4 for the one time charged Helium ions acceleration in the linear accelerator are researched and developed. The special chamber for the irradiation of functional design materials by the Helium ions is also created. In the process of experiment, the temperature of a sample, the magnitude of current of Helium ions beam and the irradiation dose of sample are measured precisely. The experimental measurement setup and techniques are fully tested and optimized in the course of the research on the electro-physical properties of irradiated samples and the thermal-desorption of Helium ions in a wide range of temperatures

A Feasibility Study of an e+e- Ring Collider for Higgs Factory

A ring-based Higgs factory with a center-of-mass energy of 240 GeV residing in the existing LEP tunnel is studied at a level of concrete lattice. We found that low-emittance lattice is essential to mitigate the effect of beamstrahlung on the beam lifetime. To achieve a luminosity of $1.0\times10^{34}{\rm cm}^{-2}{\rm s}^{-1}$, we simplified final focusing system and improved its momentum aperture by a factor of 5 to 2.5%.
