Derivation of Radiation from a Dipole immersed in a Homogenous Magnetized Plasma

We are considering a dipole antenna immersed in cold plasma and investigate its radiation patterns. We are solving Maxwell's equations using (1) analytic solutions for the case when the antenna is parallel to the magnetic field $B_0$ and (2) numerical solutions for any orientation and angle $θ$ of the antenna. We investigate various phase velocities regimes as well as the effect of varying the frequency and the plasma parameters on the electromagnetic waves are presented and discussed.

Analytical benchmark for non-equilibrium radiation diffusion in finite size systems

Non-equilibrium radiation diffusion is an important mechanism of energy transport in Inertial Confinement Fusion, astrophysical plasmas, furnaces and heat exchangers. In this paper, an analytical solution to the non-equilibrium Marshak diffusion problem in a planar slab and spherical shell of finite thickness is presented. Using Laplace transform method, the radiation and material energy densities are obtained as a function of space and time. The variation in integrated energy densities and leakage currents are also studied. In order to linearize the radiation transport and material energy equation, the heat capacity is assumed to be proportional to the cube of the material temperature. The steady state energy densities show linear variation along the depth of the planar slab, whereas non-linear dependence is observed for the spherical shell. The analytical energy densities show good agreement with those obtained from finite difference method using small mesh width and time step. The benchmark results obtained in this work can be used to validate and verify non equilibrium radiation diffusion computer codes in both planar and spherical geometry.

Cosmic ray ionization and Jesse effect behavior in electrode systems with nanostructures

Gaseous electronic characteristics due to cosmic ray ionization in the electrode systems with ZnO and carbon nanostructures have been examined in atmospheric Ar/N2 and O2/N2 mixtures. The electric conductivity at the quasi linear stage is measured at the level of 10-11~10-10 S/m, 4~5 orders of magnitudes higher than that of the samples without nanostructures, which is construed by the 108~1010 times increment of the cosmic ray ionization frequency. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that the role of one-dimensional nanostructures in this gaseous electronic phenomenon is based on the intensive field gradient effect, rather than the field enhancement effect.

Ion Landau Damping on Drift Tearing Modes

Kinetic treatments of drift-tearing modes that match an inner resonant layer solution to an external MHD region solution, characterised by $Δ^{\prime}$, fail to properly match the ideal MHD boundary condition on the parallel electric field, $E_{\parallel}.$ In this paper we demonstrate how consideration of ion sound and ion Landau damping effects achieves this and place the theory on a firm footing. As a consequence, these effects contribute quite significantly to the critical value of $Δ^{\prime}$ for instability of drift-tearing modes and play a key role in determining the minimum value for this threshold.

Amplification of a surface electromagnetic wave by running over plasma surface ultrarelativistic electron bunch as a new scheme for generation of Teraherz radiation

The amplification of a surface electromagnetic wave by means of ultrarelativistic monoenergetic electron bunch running over the flat plasma surface in absence of a magnetic field is studied theoretically. It is shown that when the ratio of electron bunch number density to plasma electron number density multiplied by a powered to 5 relativity factor is much higher than 1, i.e $γ^5 n_b/n_p>> 1$, the saturation field of the surface electromagnetic wave induced by trapping of bunch electrons gains the magnitude: $E_x=B_y\approx 0.16 \frac{ω_p m c}{e} (\frac{2n_b}{γ^2 n_p})^{1/7}$ and does not approache the surface electromagnetic wave front breakdown threshold in plasma. The surface electromagnetic wave saturation energy density in plasma can exceed the electron bunch energy density. Here, we discuss the possibility of generation of superpower Teraherz radiation on a basis of such scheme.

Noiseless Vlasov-Poisson simulations with linearly transformed particles

We introduce a deterministic discrete-particle simulation approach, the Linearly-Transformed Particle-In-Cell (LTPIC) method, that employs linear deformations of the particles to reduce the noise traditionally associated with particle schemes. Formally, transforming the particles is justified by local first order expansions of the characteristic flow in phase space. In practice the method amounts to using deformation matrices within the particle shape functions; these matrices are updated via local evaluations of the forward numerical flow. Because it is necessary to periodically remap the particles on a regular grid to avoid excessively deforming their shapes, the method can be seen as a development of Denavit's Forward Semi-Lagrangian (FSL) scheme [J. Denavit, J. Comp. Physics 9, 75 (1972)]. However, it has recently been established [M. Campos Pinto, "Smooth particle methods without smoothing", arXiv:1112.1859 (2012)] that the underlying Linearly-Transformed Particle scheme converges for abstract transport problems, with no need to remap the particles; deforming the particles can thus be seen as a way to significantly lower the remapping frequency needed in the FSL schemes, and hence the associated numerical diffusion. To couple the method with electrostatic field solvers, two specific charge deposition schemes are examined, and their performance compared with that of the standard deposition method. Finally, numerical 1d1v simulations involving benchmark test cases and halo formation in an initially mismatched thermal sheet beam demonstrate some advantages of our LTPIC scheme over the classical PIC and FSL methods. Benchmarked test cases also indicate that, for numerical choices involving similar computational effort, the LTPIC method is capable of accuracy comparable to or exceeding that of state-of-the-art, high-resolution Vlasov schemes.

Photon cluster excitation mechanism in an e-e+ plasma created from vacuum by a strong electromagnetic field

In the low density approximation of nonperturbative kinetic theory we investigate the vacuum creation of an electron-positron plasma (EPP) under the action of an external monochromatic "laser" electric field with the focus on multiphoton processes. We analyse in some detail the role of the photon cluster mechanism of EPP excitation and show that this mechanism plays the dominating role in the case when a large photon number from the external field reservoir takes part in the breakdown of the energy gap. We obtain the distribution function in this approximation and discuss its properties.

Stabilizing transverse ablative Rayleigh Taylor like instability by using elliptically polarized laser pulses in the hole-boring radiation pressure acceleration regime

It is shown that the transverse Rayleigh Taylor like instability can be well stabilized by using elliptically polarized laser in the hole boring radiation pressure acceleration regime. The $\bm{J}\times\bm{B}$ effect of the laser will thermalize the local electrons and support a transverse diffusion mechanism of the ions, resulting in the stabilization of the short wavelength perturbations, which is quite similar to the ablative Rayleigh Taylor instability in the initial confinement fusion research. The proper range of polarization ratio is obtained from a theoretical model for the given laser intensity and plasma density. The stabilization mechanism is well confirmed by two dimensional Particle-in-Cell simulations, and the ion beam driven by the elliptically polarized laser is more concentrated and intense compared with that of the circularly polarized laser.

Longitudinal electric conductivity and dielectric permeability in quantum plasma with variable frequency of collisions in Mermin' approach

Formulas for longitudinal electric conductivity and dielectric permeability in the quantum non-degenerate collisional plasma with the frequency of collisions depending on momentum in Mermin' approach are received. The kinetic equation in momentum space in relaxation approximation is used. It is shown that when Planck's constant tends to zero, the deduced formula passes to the corresponding formula for classical plasma. It is shown also that when frequency of collisions of particles of plasma tends to zero (plasma passes to collisionless one), the deduced formula passes to the known Lindhard' formula received for collisionless plasmas. It is shown, that when frequency of collisions is a constant, the deduced formula for dielectric permeability passes in known Mermin' formula.

Forced MHD turbulence in three dimensions using Taylor-Green symmetries

We examine the scaling laws of MHD turbulence for three different types of forcing functions and imposing at all times the four-fold symmetries of the Taylor-Green (TG) vortex generalized to MHD; no uniform magnetic field is present and the magnetic Prandtl number is equal to unity. We also include a forcing in the induction equation, and we take the three configurations studied in the decaying case in [E. Lee et al. Phys. Rev.E {\bf 81}, 016318 (2010)]. To that effect, we employ direct numerical simulations up to an equivalent resolution of $2048^3$ grid points. We find that, similarly to the case when the forcing is absent, different spectral indices for the total energy spectrum emerge, corresponding to either a Kolmogorov law, an Iroshnikov-Kraichnan law that arises from the interactions of turbulent eddies and Alfvén waves, or to weak turbulence when the large-scale magnetic field is strong. We also examine the inertial range dynamics in terms of the ratios of kinetic to magnetic energy, and of the turn-over time to the Alfvén time, and analyze the temporal variations of these quasi-equilibria.

Simulation studies of the behavior of positrons in a microtrap with long aspect ratio

The charged particles storage capacity of microtraps (micro-Penning-Malmberg traps) with large length to radius aspect ratios and radii of the order of tens of microns was explored. Simulation studies of the motions of charged particles were conducted with particle-in-cell WARP code and the Charged Particle Optics (CPO) program. The new design of the trap consisted of an array of microtraps with substantially lower end electrodes potential than conventional Penning-Malmberg traps, which makes this trap quite portable. It was computationally shown that each microtrap with 50 micron radius stored positrons with a density (1.6x10^11 cm^-3) even higher than that in conventional Penning-Malmberg traps (about 10^11 cm^-3) while the confinement voltage was only 10 V. It was presented in this work how to evaluate and lower the numerical noise by controlling the modeling parameters so the simulated plasma can evolve toward computational equilibrium. The local equilibrium distribution, where longitudinal force balance is satisfied along each magnetic field line, was attained in time scales of the simulation for plasmas initialized with a uniform density and Boltzmann energy distribution. The charge clouds developed the expected radial soft edge density distribution and rigid rotation evolved to some extent. To reach global equilibrium (i.e. rigid rotation) longer runs are required. The plasma confinement time and its thermalization were independent of the length. The length-dependency, reported in experiments, is due to fabrication and field errors. Computationally, more than one hundred million positrons were trapped in one microtrap with 50 micron radius and 10 cm length immersed in a 7 T uniform, axial magnetic field, and the density scaled as r^-2 down to 3 micron. Larger densities were trapped with higher barrier potentials.

Handling vacuum regions in a hybrid plasma solver

In a hybrid plasma solver (particle ions, fluid mass-less electrons) regions of vacuum, or very low charge density, can cause problems since the evaluation of the electric field involves division by charge density. This causes large electric fields in low density regions that can lead to numerical instabilities. Here we propose a self consistent handling of vacuum regions for hybrid solvers. Vacuum regions can be considered having infinite resistivity, and in this limit Faraday's law approaches a magnetic diffusion equation. We describe an algorithm that solves such a diffusion equation in regions with charge density below a threshold value. We also present an implementation of this algorithm in a hybrid plasma solver, and an application to the interaction between the Moon and the solar wind. We also discuss the implementation of hyperresistivity for smoothing the electric field in a PIC solver.

The role of convective structures in the poloidal and toroidal rotation in tokamak

The connection between the poloidal and the toroidal rotation of plasma in tokamak is important for the high confinement regimes, in particular in reactor regime. The sudden onset of closed convection structures in the poloidal section, due to the baroclinic production of vorticity, will sustain a fast increase of the poloidal velocity and a substantial effect on the toroidal rotation. However this is limited to the short time of the onset transition. In real plasma however there is random generation and suppression of convection cells and the sequence of these transient events can prove able to sustain the effect on the toroidal rotation. We formulate a simplified model which consists of a laminar sheared, regular, flow situated at the boundary of a region of drift-wave turbulence. Vortical structures, randomly generated in this turbulent region are spontaneously advected toward the flow and are absorbed there, sustaining with their vortical content, the sheared flow. We examine this dynamics in the wavenumber $\mathbf{k}$ space, using reasonable approximations. We derive a system of equations (which is a class of Davey-Stewartson system) and find that indeed, the vortices advected and absorbed into the layer can preserve its regular, poloidal, flow.

Essential Magnetohydrodynamics for Astrophysics

This text is intended as an introduction to magnetohydrodynamics in astrophysics, emphasizing a fast path to the elements essential for physical understanding. It assumes experience with concepts from fluid mechanics: the fluid equation of motion and the Lagrangian and Eulerian descriptions of fluid flow. In addition, the basics of vector calculus and elementary special relativity are needed. Not much knowledge of electromagnetic theory is required. In fact, since MHD is much closer in spirit to fluid mechanics than to electromagnetism, an important part of the learning curve is to overcome intuitions based on the vacuum electrodynamics of one's high school days. The first chapter (only 39 pp) is meant as a practical introduction including exercises. This is the `essential' part. The exercises are important as illustrations of the points made in the text (especially the less intuitive ones). Almost all are mathematically unchallenging. The supplement in chapter 2 contains further explanations, more specialized topics and connections to the occasional topic somewhat outside MHD. The emphasis is on physical understanding by the visualization of MHD processes, as opposed to more formal approaches.

Asymptotic theory of magnetic island saturation in equilibria with a finite current gradient

A novel asymptotic matching procedure is developed to revisit the problem of magnetic island saturation in case of a finite current gradient at the rational surface. Nonlinear dispersion relation is derived for saturated magnetic island. It is shown that arbitrary normalization factors that were present in previous theories are fully specified with the asymptotic matching.

Effect of sonic poloidal flows in determining flow and density asymmetries for trace impurities in the tokamak edge pedestal

The structure of poloidal and toroidal flows of trace impurities in the edge pedestal of tokamak plasmas is studied analytically and numerically. Parallel momentum balance is analysed upon retaining the following terms: poloidal and toroidal centrifugal forces (inertia), pressure force, electric force, and the friction force. It is shown that, when the poloidal flow is such to produce a properly defined Mach number of order unity somewhere on the flux surface, shock fronts can form. The shock fronts can modify the predicted asymmetry structures in both the flow and the density profile along the poloidal arc. Predictions of the theory are shown against experimental observations in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak, showing good qualitative and quantitative agreement if the inertia term associated with the poloidal flow is retained.

Analytical contradictions of the 'fixed - node' density matrices

Over the last decades the 'fixed-node method' has been used for a numerical treatment of thermodynamic properties of strongly correlated Fermi systems. In this work correctness of the 'fixed -node method' for ideal Fermi systems has been analytically analyzed. It is shown that the 'fixed-node' prescription of calculation of the density matrix leads to contradictions even for two ideal fermions. The main conclusion of this work is that the 'fixed-node method' can not reproduce the fermion density matrices and should be considered as uncontrolled empirical approach in treatment of thermodynamics of Fermi systems.
