Z' physics with early LHC data

We discuss the prospects for setting limits on or discovering spin-1 $Z'$ bosons using early LHC data at 7 TeV. Our results are based on the narrow width approximation in which the leptonic Drell-Yan $Z'$ boson production cross-section only depends on the $Z'$ boson mass together with two parameters $c_u$ and $c_d$. We carefully discuss the experimental cuts that should be applied and tabulate the theoretical next-to-next-to-leading order corrections which must be included. Using these results the approach then provides a safe, convenient and unbiased way of comparing experiment to theoretical models which avoids any built-in model dependent assumptions. We apply the method to three classes of perturbative $Z'$ boson benchmark models: $E_6$ models, left-right symmetric models and sequential standard models. We generalise each class of model in terms of {mixing angles which continuously parametrize} linear combinations of pairs of generators and lead to distinctive orbits in the $c_u-c_d$ plane. We also apply this method to the strongly coupled four-site benchmark model in which two $Z'$ bosons are predicted. By comparing the experimental limits or discovery bands to the theoretical predictions on the $c_u$-$c_d$ plane, we show that the LHC at 7 TeV with integrated luminosity of 500 pb$^{-1}$ will greatly improve on current Tevatron mass limits for the benchmark models. If a $Z'$ is discovered our results show that measurement of the mass and cross-section will provide a powerful discriminator between the benchmark models using this approach.

Strange Nucleon Form Factors from $ep$ and $νp$ Elastic Scattering

The recent parity-violating $ep$ forward-scattering elastic asymmetry data from Jefferson Lab (HAPPEx and G0), when combined with the $νp$ elastic cross section data from Brookhaven (E734), permit an extraction of the strangeness contribution to the vector and axial nucleon form factors for momentum transfers in the range $0.45 < Q^2 < 1.0$ GeV$^2$. These results, combined with the recent determination of the strange vector form factors at $Q^2 = 0.1$ GeV$^2$ (SAMPLE, HAPPEx, PVA4, G0) have been interpreted in terms of $uuds\bar{s}$ configurations very different from the kaon-loop configurations usually associated with strangeness in the nucleon. New experiments are being proposed to improve the state of our knowledge of the $νp$ elastic cross section -- these new experiments will push the range of $Q^2$ to much lower values, and greatly increase the precision of the $νp$ elastic data. One outcome of this can be a measurement of the strangeness contribution to the nucleon spin, $Δs$. Nuclear targets (e.g. C or Ar) are to be used in these neutrino experiments, and so a deep understanding of the nuclear physics, particularly in regard to final state effects, is needed before the potential of these precision experiments can be fully realized.

Ke4 decays and Wigner cusp

The NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS collected in 2003 and 2004 large samples of the decays K+- -> pi+ pi- e+- nu (Ke4+-), K+- -> pi0 pi0 e+- nu (Ke400) and K+- -> pi0 pi0 pi+-. From the Ke4+- form factors and from the cusp in the M00^2 distribution of the K+- -> pi0 pi0 pi+- events, the pi-pi scattering lengths a00 and a20 could be extracted. This measurement is a fundamental test of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT). The branching fraction and form factors of the Ke400 decay were precisely measured, using a much larger data sample than in previous experiments. An improved measurement of the slope parameters for the decay K+- -> pi0 pi0 pi+- showed evidence for a non-zero value of k.

Measurement of K^{-}_{e3} branching ratio

The branching fraction for the decay $K^{-} \to π^{0} e \bar ν$ is measured using in-flight decays detected with {\bf ISTRA+} setup working at the 25 GeV negative secondary beam of the U-70 PS:\linebreak $Br_{K_{e3}}= (5.124 \pm 0.009 (stat) \pm 0.029(norm) \pm 0.030(syst))%$. From this value the $|V_{us}|$ element of the CKM matrix is extracted, using previously measured $f_{+}(t)$ form factor: $|V_{us}|=0.227 \pm 0.002$. The results are in agreement with recent measurements by BNL E865, FNAL KTeV, KLOE.

Averages of b-hadron properties at the end of 2006

This article reports the world averages for measurements on b-hadron properties obtained by the Heavy Flavor Averaging Group (HFAG) using the available results at the end of 2006. In the averaging, the input parameters used in the various analyses are adjusted (rescaled) to common values, and all known correlations are taken into account. The averages include lifetimes, neutral meson mixing parameters, parameters of semileptonic decays, branching fractions of B decays to final states with open charm, charmonium and no charm, and measurements related to CP asymmetries.

Is the Pentaquark the Only Justification for Research on KN Physics ?

The talk is intended to motivate the use of DA$Φ$NE--2 running at the $ϕ$ peak as an intense, clean source of low--momentum charged and neutral kaons. It covers a few open problems still unsolved after more than twenty--five years and the physics (some of it still novel) that could be learned only in this way. And, of course, the answer to the above question is {\sl NO}.

Searches for non-Standard-Model Higgs Bosons at the Tevatron

Search for non-Standard-Model Higgs bosons is one of the major goals of the ongoing Fermilab Tevatron run. Large data sets accumulated by the CDF and D0 experiments break new grounds in sensitivity. We review recent Tevatron results on searches for Higgs bosons in Minimal Supersymmetric Model in the multi b-jet and tau-tau final states, as well as a search for fermiophobic Higgs in the multiphoton final state.

Measurements of B Rare Decays at the Tevatron

A summary of recent results on B rare decays from the CDF and D0 experiments operating in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron is given; analyzed decay modes are B_{d,s}--> hh, B_{d,s}--> mu^{+}mu^{-}, and B--> mu^{+} mu^{-}h. Data samples are relative to 1 fb^{-1} or more integrated luminosity of p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. All reported results are in agreement with Standard Model predictions and consistent with B-Factories analyzes.

Early physics with top quarks at the LHC

The ATLAS and CMS experiments are now in their final installation phase and will be soon ready to study the physics of proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. The LHC, by producing 2 $t\bar{t}$ events per second, will provide more than 8 million top events a year at start-up. In this paper, particular emphasis is given to the $t\bar{t}$ physics studies that can be performed at the beginning of the LHC running, with a limited amount of integrated luminosity ($\le$10 fb$^{-1}$).

Forward-Backward Charge Asymmetry in Z Production at the LHC

We present here a study on the determination of the effective weak mixing angle, $\sin^{2}θ^{lept}_{eff}$ from the measurement of the Forward-Backward Asymmetry with a high a statistical precision, 10$^{-4}$. To reach such a precision it is necessary to identify the electrons in the forward regions of the ATLAS detector. It is demonstrated that one can reach an electron-jet rejection of more than 100 with an efficiency on electron reconstruction better than 50%, by using a multivariate analysis.
