Asymptotic analyses and error estimates for a Cahn-Hilliard type phase field system modelling tumor growth

This paper is concerned with a phase field system of Cahn-Hilliard type that is related to a tumor growth model and consists of three equations in terms of the variables order parameter, chemical potential and nutrient concentration. This system has been investigated in the recent contributions arXiv:1401.5943 [math.AP] and arXiv:1501.07057 [math.AP] from the viewpoint of well-posedness, long time behavior and asymptotic convergence as two positive viscosity coefficients tend to zero at the same time. Here, we continue the analysis performed in arXiv:1501.07057 [math.AP] by showing two independent sets of results as just one of the coefficients tends to zero, the other remaining fixed. We prove convergence results, uniqueness of solutions to the two resulting limit problems, and suitable error estimates.

Construction of the Hodge-Neumann heat kernel, local Bernstein estimates, and Onsager's conjecture in fluid dynamics

Most recently, in arXiv:1907.05360 [math.AP], we introduced the theory of heatable currents and proved Onsager's conjecture on Riemannian manifolds with boundary, where the weak solution has $B_{3,1}^{\frac{1}{3}}$ spatial regularity. In this sequel, by applying techniques from geometric microlocal analysis to construct the Hodge-Neumann heat kernel, we obtain off-diagonal decay and local Bernstein estimates, and then use them to extend the result to the Besov space $\widehat{B}_{3,V}^{\frac{1}{3}}$, which generalizes both the space $\widehat{B}_{3,c(\mathbb{N})}^{1/3}$ from arXiv:1310.7947 [math.AP] and the space $\underline{B}_{3,\text{VMO}}^{1/3}$ from arXiv:1902.07120 [math.AP] -- the best known function space where Onsager's conjecture holds on flat backgrounds.

Local Wellposedness of dispersive equations with quasi-periodic initial data

We prove unconditional local well-posedness in a space of quasi-periodic functions for dispersive equations of the form $$\partial_tu + Lu + \partial_x(u^{p+1})=0,$$ where $L$ is a multiplier operator with purely imaginary symbol which grows at most exponentially. The class of equations to which our method applies includes the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation, the generalized Benjamin-Ono equation, and the derivative nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. We also discuss well-posedness of some dispersive models which do not have a problematic derivative in the nonlinearity, namely, the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation and the generalized Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation, with quasi-periodic initial data. In this way, we recover and improve upon results from arXiv:1212.2674v3 [math.AP], arXiv:2110.11263v1 [math.AP] and arXiv:2201.02920v1 [math.AP] by shorter arguments.

On the set of metrics without local limiting Carleman weights

In the paper arXiv:1411.4887 [math.AP] it is shown that the set of Riemannian metrics which do not admit global limiting Carleman weights is open and dense, by studying the conformally invariant Weyl and Cotton tensors. In the paper arXiv:1011.2507 [math.DG] it is shown that the set of Riemannian metrics which do not admit local limiting Carleman weights at any point is residual, showing that it contains the set of metrics for which there are no local conformal diffeomorphisms between any distinct open subsets. This paper is a continuation of arXiv:1411.4887 [math.AP] in order to prove that the set of Riemannian metrics which do not admit local limiting Carleman weights \emph{at any point} is open and dense.

Fractional derivatives of composite functions and the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear half wave equation

We show new results of wellposedness for the Cauchy problem for the half wave equation with power-type nonlinear terms. For the purpose, we propose two approaches on the basis of the contraction-mapping argument. One of them relies upon the $L_t^q L_x^\infty$ Strichartz-type estimate together with the chain rule of fairly general fractional orders. This chain rule has a significance of its own. Furthermore, in addition to the weighted fractional chain rule established in Hidano, Jiang, Lee, and Wang (arXiv:1605.06748v1 [math.AP]), the other approach uses weighted space-time $L^2$ estimates for the inhomogeneous equation which are recovered from those for the second-order wave equation. In particular, by the latter approach we settle the problem left open in Bellazzini, Georgiev, and Visciglia (arXiv:1611.04823v1 [math.AP]) concerning the local wellposedness in $H^{s}_{\rm rad}({\mathbb R}^n)$ with $s>1/2$.

Endpoint Estimates For Riesz Transform And Hardy-Hilbert Type Inequalities

We consider a class of non-doubling manifolds $\mathcal{M}$ defined by taking connected sum of finite Riemannian manifolds with dimension N which has the form $\mathbb{R}^{n_i}\times \mathcal{M}_i$ and the Euclidean dimension $n_i$ are not necessarily all the same. In arXiv:1805.00132v3 [math.AP], Hassell and Sikora proved that the Riesz transform on $\mathcal{M}$ is weak type $(1,1)$, bounded on $L^{p}(\mathcal{M})$ for all $1<p<n^*$ where $n^* = \min_k n_k$ and is unbounded for $p \ge n^*$. In this note we show that the Riesz transform is bounded from Lorentz space $L^{n^* ,1}(\mathcal{M})$ to $L^{n^*,1}(\mathcal{M})$. This complete the picture by obtaining the end point results for $p=n^*$. Our approach is based on parametrix construction described in arXiv:1805.00132v3 [math.AP] and a generalisation of Hardy-Hilbert type inequalities first studied by Hardy, Littlewood and Pólya.

Long Range Scattering and Modified Wave Operators for some Hartree Type Equations III. Gevrey spaces and low dimensions

We study the theory of scattering for a class of Hartree type equations with long range interactions in arbitrary space dimension n > or = 1, including the case of Hartree equations with time dependent potential V(t,x) = kappa t^(mu - gamma) |x|^{- mu} with 0 < gamma < or =1 and 0 < mu < n.This includes the case of potential V(x) = kappa |x|^(-gamma) and can be extended to the limiting case of nonlinear Schr"odinger equations with cubic nonlinearity kappa t^(n- gamma) u|u|^2.Using Gevrey spaces of asymptotic states and solutions,we prove the existence of modified local wave operators at infinity with no size restriction on the data and we determine the asymptotic behaviour in time of solutions in the range of the wave operators, thereby extending the results of previous papers (math.AP/9807031 and math.AP/9903073) which covered the range 0 < gamma < or = 1, but only 0 < mu < or = n-2, and were therefore restricted to space dimension n>2.

Resolvents of elliptic boundary problems on conic manifolds

This paper is a continuation of the investigation of resolvents of elliptic operators on conic manifolds from math.AP/0410178 and math.AP/0410176 to the case of manifolds with boundary and realizations of operators under boundary conditions. We prove the existence of sectors of minimal growth for realizations of boundary value problems for cone operators under natural ellipticity conditions on the symbols. Special attention is devoted to the clarification of the analytic structure of the resolvent.

The Paley-Wiener Theorem for the Jacobi Transform and the Local Huygens' Principle for Root Systems with Even Multiplicities

This note is a continuation of the previous paper math.AP/0411383 by the same authors. Its purpose is to extend the results of math.AP/0411383 to the context of root systems with even multiplicities. Under the even multiplicity assumption, we prove a local Paley-Wiener theorem for the Jacobi transform and the strong Huygens' principle for the wave equation associated with the modified compact Laplace operator.

Global-in-time Well-posedness of the One-dimensional Hydrodynamic Gross-Pitaevskii Equations without Vacuum

We establish global-in-time well-posedness of the one-dimensional hydrodynamic Gross-Pitaevskii equations in the absence of vacuum in $(1 + H^s) \times H^{s-1}$ with $s \geq 1$. We achieve this by a reduction via the Madelung transform to the previous global-in-time well-posedness result for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in arXiv:1801.08386v2 [math.AP] and arXiv:2204.06293v1 [math.AP]. Our core result is a local bilipschitz equivalence between the relevant function spaces.

Weighted Low-Regularity Solutions of the KP-I Initial Value Problem

In this paper we establish local well-posedness of the KP-I problem, with initial data small in the intersection of the natural energy space with the space of functions which are square integrable when multiplied by the weight y. The result is proved by the contraction mapping principle. A similar (but slightly weaker) result was the main Theorem in the paper " Low regularity solutions for the Kadomstev-Petviashvili I equation " by Colliander, Kenig and Staffilani (GAFA 13 (2003),737-794 and math.AP/0204244). Ionescu found a counterexample (included in the present paper) to the main estimate used in the GAFA paper, which renders incorrect the proof there. The present paper thus provides a correct proof of a strengthened version of the main result in the GAFA paper.

An asymptotic analysis for a nonstandard Cahn-Hilliard system with viscosity

This paper is concerned with a diffusion model of phase-field type, consisting of a parabolic system of two partial differential equations, interpreted as balances of microforces and microenergy, for two unknowns: the problem's order parameter and the chemical potential; each equation includes a viscosity term and the field equations are complemented by Neumann homogeneous boundary conditions and suitable initial conditions. In the recent paper arXiv:1103.4585v1 [math.AP] we proved that this problem is well posed and investigated the long-time behavior of its solutions. Here we discuss the asymptotic limit of the system as the viscosity coefficient of the order parameter equation tends to 0. We prove convergence of solutions to the corresponding solutions for the limit problem, whose long-time behavior we characterize; in the proofs, we employ compactness and monotonicity arguments.

Convergence properties for a generalization of the Caginalp phase field system

We are concerned with a phase field system consisting of two partial differential equations in terms of the variables thermal displacement, that is basically the time integration of temperature, and phase parameter. The system is a generalization of the well-known Caginalp model for phase transitions, when including a diffusive term for the thermal displacement in the balance equation and when dealing with an arbitrary maximal monotone graph, along with a smooth anti-monotone function, in the phase equation. A Cauchy-Neumann problem has been studied for such a system in arXiv:1107.3950v2 [math.AP], by proving well-posedness and regularity results, as well as convergence of the problem as the coefficient of the diffusive term for the thermal displacement tends to zero. The aim of this contribution is rather to investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the problem as the coefficient in front of the Laplacian of the temperature goes to 0: this analysis is motivated by the types III and II cases in the thermomechanical theory of Green and Naghdi. Under minimal assumptions on the data of the problems, we show a convergence result. Then, with the help of uniform regularity estimates, we discuss the rate of convergence for the difference of the solutions in suitable norms.

Optimal boundary control of a viscous Cahn-Hilliard system with dynamic boundary condition and double obstacle potentials

In this paper, we investigate optimal boundary control problems for Cahn-Hilliard variational inequalities with a dynamic boundary condition involving double obstacle potentials and the Laplace-Beltrami operator. The cost functional is of standard tracking type, and box constraints for the controls are prescribed. We prove existence of optimal controls and derive first-order necessary conditions of optimality. The general strategy, which follows the lines of the recent approach by Colli, Farshbaf-Shaker, Sprekels (see the preprint arXiv:1308.5617) to the (simpler) Allen-Cahn case, is the following: we use the results that were recently established by Colli, Gilardi, Sprekels in the preprint arXiv:1407.3916 [math.AP] for the case of (differentiable) logarithmic potentials and perform a so-called "deep quench limit". Using compactness and monotonicity arguments, it is shown that this strategy leads to the desired first-order necessary optimality conditions for the case of (non-differentiable) double obstacle potentials.

Optimal boundary control of a nonstandard Cahn-Hilliard system with dynamic boundary condition and double obstacle inclusions

In this paper, we study an optimal boundary control problem for a model for phase separation taking place in a spatial domain that was introduced by P. Podio-Guidugli in Ric. Mat. 55 (2006), pp. 105-118. The model consists of a strongly coupled system of nonlinear parabolic differential inclusions, in which products between the unknown functions and their time derivatives occur that are difficult to handle analytically; the system is complemented by initial and boundary conditions. For the order parameter of the phase separation process, a dynamic boundary condition involving the Laplace-Beltrami operator is assumed, which models an additional nonconserving phase transition occurring on the surface of the domain. We complement in this paper results that were established in the recent contribution appeared in Evol. Equ. Control Theory 6 (2017), pp. 35-58, by the two authors and Gianni Gilardi. In contrast to that paper, in which differentiable potentials of logarithmic type were considered, we investigate here the (more difficult) case of nondifferentiable potentials of double obstacle type. For such nonlinearities, the standard techniques of optimal control theory to establish the existence of Lagrange multipliers for the state constraints are known to fail. To overcome these difficulties, we employ the following line of approach: we use the results contained in the preprint arXiv:1609.07046 [math.AP] for the case of (differentiable) logarithmic potentials and perform a so-called "deep quench limit". Using compactness and monotonicity arguments, it is shown that this strategy leads to the desired first-order necessary optimality conditions for the case of (nondifferentiable) double obstacle potentials.

Optimal velocity control of a convective Cahn-Hilliard system with double obstacles and dynamic boundary conditions: a `deep quench' approach

In this paper, we investigate a distributed optimal control problem for a convective viscous Cahn-Hilliard system with dynamic boundary conditions. Such systems govern phase separation processes between two phases taking place in an incompressible fluid in a container and, at the same time, on the container boundary. The cost functional is of standard tracking type, while the control is exerted by the velocity of the fluid in the bulk. In this way, the coupling between the state (given by the associated order parameter and chemical potential) and control variables in the governing system of nonlinear partial differential equations is bilinear, which presents a difficulty for the analysis. In contrast to the previous paper arXiv:1709.02335 [math.AP] by the same authors, the bulk and surface free energies are of double obstacle type, which renders the state constraint nondifferentiable. It is well known that for such cases standard constraint qualifications are not satisfied so that standard methods do not apply to yield the existence of Lagrange multipliers. In this paper, we overcome this difficulty by taking advantage of results established in the quoted paper for logarithmic nonlinearities, using a so-called `deep quench approximation'. We derive results concerning the existence of optimal controls and the first-order necessary optimality conditions in terms of a variational inequality and the associated adjoint system.

Local well-posedness of the Boltzmann equation with polynomially decaying initial data

We consider the Cauchy problem for the spatially inhomogeneous non-cutoff Boltzmann equation with polynomially decaying initial data in the velocity variable. We establish short-time existence for any initial data with this decay in a fifth order Sobolev space by working in a mixed $L^2$ and $L^\infty$ space that allows to compensate for potential moment generation and obtaining new estimates on the collision operator that are well-adapted to this space. Our results improve the range of parameters for which the Boltzmann equation is well-posed in this decay regime, as well as relax the restrictions on the initial regularity. As an application, we can combine our existence result with the recent conditional regularity estimates of Imbert-Silvestre (arXiv:1909.12729 [math.AP]) to conclude solutions can be continued for as long as the mass, energy, and entropy densities remain under control. This continuation criterion was previously only available in the restricted range of parameters of previous well-posedness results for polynomially decaying initial data.
