A homotopy method for finding eigenvalues and eigenvectors

Abstract

Suppose we want to find the eigenvalues and eigenvectors for the linear operator L, and suppose that we have solved this problem for some other "nearby" operator K. In this paper we show how to represent the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of L in terms of the corresponding properties of K.

Embedding complexity into the universal Banach space and the strong Novikov conjecture

Brown-Guentner and Haagerup-Przybyszewska showed that every discrete group admits a proper affine isometric action on the universal Banach space $\bigoplus_{p=1}^{\infty} \ell^{2p}(\mathbb{N}),$ taken as the $\ell^{2}$-direct sum, and hence admits a coarse embedding into this space [7, 28]. They further asked whether such embeddings could be used to study the Novikov conjecture. In this paper, we address this question by proving that the strong Novikov conjecture holds for any discrete group that admits a coarse embedding with finite complexity into this universal Banach space. Finally, we show that the recently discovered non-sofic groups constructed by Kun and Thom have Property A and therefore satisfy the Novikov conjecture.

Symmetric Kahane--Salem--Zygmund Inequalities and the Supremum Norm

The Kahane--Salem--Zygmund inequality provides unimodular $m$-linear forms with small supremum norm. We consider its dimension-free symmetric constant $C_m^{\mathrm{sym}}$ over the real scalar field, defined by the requirement that, for every $n$, some real symmetric unimodular $m$-linear form $A:(\ell_\infty^n)^m\to\mathbb R$ satisfy \[ \|A\|\le C_m^{\mathrm{sym}}n^{(m+1)/2}. \] For complex scalars, Boas obtained under permutation symmetry an upper bound of order at most $\sqrt{m\log m}\,\sqrt{m!}$; over the real scalar field, an elementary argument gives the sharper order $\sqrt m\,\sqrt{m!}$. We prove \[ C_m^{\mathrm{sym}}\ge \left(\sqrt{\frac2e}+o(1)\right)\frac{\sqrt{m!}}m, \] using the square-free Walsh spectrum of the diagonal polynomial. In the opposite direction, we establish \[ C_m^{\mathrm{sym}}\le C_0\sqrt{m!}, \] where $C_0$ is absolute, removing the factor $\sqrt m$ from the real upper bound. This estimate follows from a geometric argument in which rigidity for Gram permanents reduces the relevant configurations to sets controlled by Gaussian width. For unrestricted unimodular forms, we also obtain a quantitative rectangular estimate from truncated Hadamard matrices; in equal dimension, the normalized minimum is at most $1+o(1)$ whenever $m=o(n^{5/6})$.

The weak type $(1,1)$ estimate of Dirichlet Means for unbounded noncommutative Vilenkin systems

Let $\mathcal{R}$ be the hyperfinite $\mathrm{II}_1$ factor. Considering the partial sum operators $(\mathcal{S}_n)_{n\geq 1}$ of the noncommutative Vilenkin-Fourier series associated with an arbitrary admissible Vilenkin group, we prove that there exists a universal constant $c>0$ such that \begin{equation*} \sup_{n\geq1}\|\mathcal{S}_n(f)\|_{L_{1,\infty}(\mathcal{R})} \leq c\|f\|_{L_1(\mathcal{R})},\quad f \in L_1(\mathcal{R}), \end{equation*} and, for every $1<p<\infty$, $$\sup_{n\geq1}\|\mathcal{S}_n(f)\|_{L_p(\mathcal{R})} \leq c\frac{p}{p-1}\|f\|_{L_p(\mathcal{R})},\quad f \in L_p(\mathcal{R}).$$ Besides the transference technique, the main novel ingredient is a modified version of noncommutative Calderón-Zygmund decomposition established in \cite{CCP2022}. Consequently, we resolve the problem of weak type $(1,1)$ estimate communicated to the authors by Fedor Sukochev, and substantially improve the strong type (p,p) estimates obtained in \cite{DFdePS2001} by achieving the optimal order $\frac{p}{p-1}$.
