Prompt photons with associated jets in photoproduction at HERA

Abstract

Prompt photons, together with an accompanying jet, have been studied in the photoproduction regime of ep scattering with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Predictions based on leading-logarithm parton-shower Monte Carlo models and next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD underestimate the gamma+jet cross sections for transverse energies of prompt photons below 7 GeV, while the kT-factorisation QCD calculation agrees with the data in this region.

Cosmic Rays as an Interdisciplinary Earth Observation Tool: From Particle Physics and Atmospheric Processes to Geosciences and Urban Science

The exploration of cosmic rays, which are high-energy particles originating from space and the atmosphere, has historically been associated with particle physics and astrophysics. In the last 20 years, these particles have evolved into valuable tools for observing Earth's systems. This review compiles the use of cosmic rays in three primary areas: (1) particle physics and atmospheric processes, which include cosmic- ray-induced cascades, ionization, and their impact on atmospheric chemistry and radiation; (2) geosciences, where cosmogenic radionuclides assist in the dating of geological materials and cosmic-ray neutrons are used for large-scale monitoring of soil moisture and snow water equivalents; and (3) urban science, where cosmic- ray muons are employed for non-invasive subsurface imaging and, when paired with distributed sensors, serve as the basis for smart city monitoring. This review places particular emphasis on integrating these methods with remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS), which helps close the persistent scale gap between point measurements and satellite observations, thereby enabling three-dimensional digital representations of subsurfaces. This review concludes by discussing data standards, their integration into operational Earth observation workflows, and future research directions.

Long-Delayed Afterpulse Measurement of JUNO 20-inch Photomultiplier Tubes

In large-scale liquid scintillator detectors such as the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), high-intensity events like cosmic muons induce photomultiplier tube (PMT) afterpulses that can interfere with the analysis of delayed physics signals. To systematically evaluate this instrumental background, we present a dedicated measurement of long-delayed afterpulses in two types of JUNO 20-inch PMTs: a dynode-based PMT and a microchannel-plate (MCP) PMT. The afterpulse time profiles were first characterized within a direct 1.8~ms waveform window and were further extended to 20~ms using a sliding-window readout strategy. Distinct long-delayed components are observed, revealing a strong dependence on the PMT multiplication structure. The dynode PMT exhibits a broad afterpulse component peaking at approximately 260~$μ$s, whereas the MCP-PMT shows a pronounced peak around 90~$μ$s, an additional component around 550~$μ$s, and a much smaller, broadly distributed millisecond-scale component. For the microsecond-scale components, the afterpulse yield per primary photoelectron is at the $10^{-3}$ level in the selected delayed windows and increases approximately linearly with the primary light intensity. The accumulated delayed activity can therefore become non-negligible following high-intensity events. These quantitative findings provide critical inputs for PMT response characterization and for the accurate modeling of delayed correlated backgrounds in high-precision neutrino experiments.

Achieving a 0.49 keV threshold in the COSINE-100 dark matter experiment

The COSINE-100 experiment searched for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with NaI(Tl) crystals at the Yangyang Underground Laboratory. Using its full 6-year dataset, we lower the analysis threshold to 0.49 keV. A multi-layer perceptron classifier separates scintillation events from photomultiplier tube noise. It is trained with approximately $3\times10^{6}$ simulated scintillation waveforms per crystal, separately for groups of events with similar numbers of photoelectron clusters. The selection keeps more than 10% of scintillation events at 0.49 keV while limiting noise contamination to below 1%. The selection efficiency is validated with $^{22}$Na-calibration data and internal $^{22}$Na events, and the selection performance is stable over the six years of data taking. With this threshold, the median expected upper limit on the spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross section reaches $1.1\times10^{-36}$ cm$^2$ at a WIMP mass of 2.5 GeV/$c^2$, probing previously unexplored parameter space in the 2.0-2.8 GeV/$c^2$ mass range.
