Strongly pseudoconvex domains as subvarieties of complex manifolds

Abstract

In this paper (a sequel to B. Drinovec Drnovsek and F. Forstneric, Holomorphic curves in complex spaces, Duke Math. J. 139 (2007), 203-253) we obtain existence and approximation results for closed complex subvarieties that are normalized by strongly pseudoconvex Stein domains. Our sufficient condition for the existence of such subvarieties in a complex manifold is expressed in terms of the Morse indices and the number of positive Levi eigenvalues of an exhaustion function on the manifold. Examples show that our condition cannot be weakened in general. Optimal results are obtained for subvarieties of this type in complements of compact complex submanifolds with Griffiths positive normal bundle; in the projective case these results generalize classical theorems of Remmert, Bishop and Narasimhan concerning proper holomorphic maps and embeddings to complex Euclidean spaces.

The Carathéodory metric on Teichmüller space of genus two surface

Let $\Tei_{g,n}$ be the Teichmüller space of Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $n$ marked points. It is conjectured that the Teichmüller and Carathéodory metrics coincide on a Teichmüller disk exactly when every zero of the associated holomorphic quadratic differential (away from marked points) has even order. Gekhtman and Markovic verified this conjecture for $\Tei_{0,5}\cong \Tei_{1,2}$. We confirm the conjecture for $\Tei_{0,6}\cong\Tei_{2,0}$.

A Transform Pair for Doubly Connected Domains

A new transform-based technique that generalizes the unified transform method is developed for bounded doubly connected domains as a novel way to numerically solve boundary value problems for holomorphic functions and solutions to the Laplacian. This work builds on the transform methods for multiply connected circular domains developed by Crowdy (2015, IMA J., 80, 1902-1931) and the methods for simply connected bounded domains developed by Hulse et al. (2025, Proc. A, 481 (2319)). The Szegő kernel of the annulus and a corresponding transformation law is pivotal in the derivation of this new technique. The modified Schwarz problem and a boundary value problem for a point vortex inside of a doubly connected domain are implemented in detail to demonstrate the effectiveness of this new method.

Sharp exponential integrability of conjugate functions

We prove that if a real-valued function $f\in L^1$ on the complex unit circle has a gap of width at least $π$ in its essential range, then $\exp(\tilde f)$ is not integrable, where $\tilde f$ is the conjugate function. More generally, the exponential function can be replaced by any nonnegative convex function $Y$ satisfying $$ \int_0^\infty Y(x) e^{-x}\, dx = \infty. $$ We also establish a local version on arcs of the unit circle: Under a natural condition on the inverse images of the two sides of the gap, $Y(\tilde f)$ fails to be integrable on the arc; in particular, it suffices that one of these inverse images is not an interval modulo null sets. Furthermore, we obtain corresponding results for complex-valued functions and a $Y$-integrability version of Zygmund's result.
