Families of proper holomorphic maps

Given a smooth, open, oriented surface $X$ endowed with a family of complex structures $\{J_b\}_{b\in B}$ depending continuously on the parameter $b$ in a metrisable space $B$, we construct a continuous family of proper holomorphic maps $F_{b}:(X,J_b)\to\mathbb C^{2}$, $b\in B$.

Hyperbolic domains in real Euclidean spaces

The second named author and David Kalaj introduced a pseudometric on any domain in the real Euclidean space $\mathbb R^n$, $n\ge 3$, defined in terms of conformal harmonic discs, by analogy with Kobayashi's pseudometric on complex manifolds, which is defined in terms of holomorphic discs. They showed that on the unit ball of $\mathbb R^n$, the minimal metric coincides with the classical Beltrami-Cayley-Klein metric, one of the models of hyperbolic geometry. In the present paper we investigate properties of the minimal pseudometric and give sufficient conditions for a domain to be (complete) hyperbolic, meaning that the minimal pseudometric is a (complete) metric. We show in particular that a convex domain is complete hyperbolic if and only if it does not contain any affine 2-planes. One of our main results is that a domain with a negative minimal plurisubharmonic exhaustion function is hyperbolic, and a bounded strongly minimally convex domain is complete hyperbolic. We also prove a localization theorem for the minimal pseudometric.

Proper holomorphic maps in Euclidean spaces avoiding unbounded convex sets

We show that if $E$ is a closed convex set in $\mathbb C^n$ $(n>1)$ contained in a closed halfspace $H$ such that $E\cap bH$ is nonempty and bounded, then the concave domain $Ω= \mathbb C^n\setminus E$ contains images of proper holomorphic maps $f:X\to \mathbb C^n$ from any Stein manifold $X$ of dimension $<n$, with approximation of a given map on closed compact subsets of $X$. If in addition $2\dim X+1\le n$ then $f$ can be chosen an embedding, and if $2\dim X=n$ then it can be chosen an immersion. Under a stronger condition on $E$ we also obtain the interpolation property for such maps on closed complex subvarieties.

Flexible domains for minimal surfaces in Euclidean spaces

In this paper we introduce and investigate a new notion of flexibility for domains in Euclidean spaces $\mathbb R^n$ for $n\ge 3$ in terms of minimal surfaces which they contain. A domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb R^n$ is said to be flexible if every conformal minimal immersion $U\toΩ$ from a Runge domain $U$ in an open conformal surface $M$ can be approximated uniformly on compacts, with interpolation on any given finite set, by conformal minimal immersion $M\to Ω$. Together with hyperbolicity phenomena considered in recent works, this extends the dichotomy between flexibility and rigidity from complex analysis to minimal surface theory.

Proper holomorphic curves attached to domains

Let D be a domain in C^n with smooth boundary, of finite 1-type at a point p in the boundary and such that the closure of D has a basis of Stein Runge neighborhoods. Assume that there exists an analytic disc which intersects the closure of D exactly at p. We construct proper holomorphic maps from any open Riemann surface S which are attached to the closure of D exactly at p.

Minimal surfaces in minimally convex domains

In this paper, we prove that every conformal minimal immersion of a compact bordered Riemann surface $M$ into a minimally convex domain $D\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ can be approximated, uniformly on compacts in $\mathring M=M\setminus bM$, by proper complete conformal minimal immersions $\mathring M\to D$. We also obtain a rigidity theorem for complete immersed minimal surfaces of finite total curvature contained in a minimally convex domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and we characterize the minimal surface hull of a compact set $K$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for any $n\ge 3$ by sequences of conformal minimal disks whose boundaries converge to $K$ in the measure theoretic sense.

Minimal hulls of compact sets in $\mathbb R^3$

The main result of this paper is a characterization of the minimal surface hull of a compact set $K$ in $\mathbb R^3$ by sequences of conformal minimal discs whose boundaries converge to $K$ in the measure theoretic sense, and also by $2$-dimensional minimal currents which are limits of Green currents supported by conformal minimal discs. Analogous results are obtained for the null hull of a compact subset of $\mathbb C^3$. We also prove a null hull analogue of the Alexander-Stolzenberg-Wermer theorem on polynomial hulls of compact sets of finite linear measure, and a polynomial hull version of classical Bochner's tube theorem.

Every bordered Riemann surface is a complete conformal minimal surface bounded by Jordan curves

In this paper we find approximate solutions of certain Riemann-Hilbert boundary value problems for minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and null holomorphic curves in $\mathbb{C}^n$ for any $n\ge 3$. With this tool in hand we construct complete conformally immersed minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ which are normalized by any given bordered Riemann surface and have Jordan boundaries. We also furnish complete conformal proper minimal immersions from any given bordered Riemann surface to any smoothly bounded, strictly convex domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$ which extend continuously up to the boundary; for $n\ge 5$ we find embeddings with these properties.

A note on weighted homogeneous Siciak-Zaharyuta extremal functions

We prove that for any given upper semicontinuous function $φ$ on an open subset $E$ of $\mathbb C^n\setminus\{0\}$, such that the complex cone generated by $E$ minus the origin is connected, the homogeneous Siciak-Zaharyuta function with the weight $φ$ on $E$, can be represented as an envelope of a disc functional.

We establish plurisubharmonicity of the envelope of Lelong functional on almost complex manifolds of real dimension four, thereby we generalize the corresponding result for complex manifolds.

Characterizations of Projective Hulls by Analytic Discs

The notion of the projective hull of a compact set in a complex projective space was introduced by Harvey and Lawson in 2006. In this paper we describe the projective hull by Poletsky sequences of analytic discs, in analogy to the known descriptions of the holomorphic and the plurisubharmonic hull.

Disc functionals and Siciak-Zaharyuta extremal functions on singular varieties

We establish plurisubharmonicity of envelopes of certain classical disc functionals on locally irreducible complex spaces, thereby generalizing the corresponding results for complex manifolds. We also find new formulae expressing the Siciak-Zaharyuta extremal function of an open set in a locally irreducible affine algebraic variety as the envelope of certain disc functionals, similarly to what has been done for open sets in C^n by Lempert and by Larusson and Sigurdsson.

Strongly pseudoconvex domains as subvarieties of complex manifolds

In this paper (a sequel to B. Drinovec Drnovsek and F. Forstneric, Holomorphic curves in complex spaces, Duke Math. J. 139 (2007), 203-253) we obtain existence and approximation results for closed complex subvarieties that are normalized by strongly pseudoconvex Stein domains. Our sufficient condition for the existence of such subvarieties in a complex manifold is expressed in terms of the Morse indices and the number of positive Levi eigenvalues of an exhaustion function on the manifold. Examples show that our condition cannot be weakened in general. Optimal results are obtained for subvarieties of this type in complements of compact complex submanifolds with Griffiths positive normal bundle; in the projective case these results generalize classical theorems of Remmert, Bishop and Narasimhan concerning proper holomorphic maps and embeddings to complex Euclidean spaces.

Approximation of holomorphic mappings on strongly pseudoconvex domains

Let D be a relatively compact strongly pseudoconvex domain in a Stein manifold, and let Y be a complex manifold. We prove that the set A(D,Y), consisting of all continuous maps from the closure of D to Y which are holomorphic in D, is a complex Banach manifold. When D is the unit disc in C (or any other topologically trivial strongly pseudoconvex domain in a Stein manifold), A(D,Y) is locally modeled on the Banach space A(D,C^n)=A(D)^n with n=dim Y. Analogous results hold for maps which are holomorphic in D and of class C^r up to the boundary for any positive integer r. We also establish the Oka property for sections of continuous or smooth fiber bundles over the closure of D which are holomorphic over D and whose fiber enjoys the Convex approximation property. The main analytic technique used in the paper is a method of gluing holomorphic sprays over Cartan pairs in Stein manifolds, with control up to the boundary, which was developed in our paper "Holomorphic curves in complex manifolds" (Duke Math. J. 139 (2007), no. 2, 203--253).
