The shell around VY Canis Majoris in SPHEREx is likely an artifact

Abstract

Recently, the presence of a large shell around the bright hypergiant star VY Canis Majoris was reported in images from the SPHEREx mission. We report similar shells around other bright stars at similar locations in SPHEREx Band 1 images, suggesting that this shell is not astrophysical but instead a detector artifact.

Beyond diagonal approximations: improved covariance modeling for pulsar timing array data analysis

Pulsar Timing Array (PTA) searches for nHz gravitational-wave backgrounds (GWBs) typically model time-correlated noise by assuming a diagonal covariance in Fourier space, neglecting inter-frequency correlations introduced by the finite observation window. We show that this diagonal approximation can produce method-dependent shifts in estimates of spectral parameters, especially for pulsars with shallow intrinsic red noise spectra. To address these limitations, we present a method that (i) computes the time-domain autocorrelation on a coarse grid using a fast Fourier transform (FFT), (ii) interpolates it accurately to the unevenly sampled observation times, and (iii) incorporates it into a low-rank likelihood via the Sherman--Morrison--Woodbury identity. Using both analytic covariance comparisons and end-to-end simulations inspired by the NANOGrav 15-year dataset, we demonstrate that our method captures frequency correlations faithfully, avoids Gibbs ringing, and yields estimates closer to the injected values in the realization studied with modest computational cost. As PTA datasets increase in sensitivity and complexity, our approach offers a practical and scalable path to fully accurate covariance modeling for current and future analyses.

Inpainting to search for premerger massive black hole binaries in realistic LISA datasets

A key science target of the Large Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is to carry out multi-messenger observations of massive black hole binaries, observing the merger simultaneously in gravitational waves and with electromagnetic observatories. Identifying that a merger is happening and providing an updating estimate of the sky location in the hours, days and weeks before the merger is critical to enable electromagnetic observations of the merger event. In this work we demonstrate and compare two methods for premerger identification of massive black hole binaries; a zero-latency filter approach and, for the first time, an approach using an ``inpainting'' technique. We apply these methods to the LISA Data Challenge dataset 2a--Sangria-HM--and demonstrate the successful recovery of the 14 signals in the dataset that we expected to be identifiable at least half a day before merger. We show that the inpainting method can identify premerger signals even when gaps are present in the data, demonstrating the recovery of a signal even when 3 day-long data gaps are added to the 14 days preceding merger. Finally, we explore the challenge of overlapping signals, using a region of overlapping signals in the Sangria-HM dataset, all of which merge within a 10-day window, and show how removing signals that have been confidently identified from the data allows us to identify quieter signals in the same period.

An Ultraviolet Instrument on the Habitable Worlds Observatory: Considerations and Capability Trades on the Multi-Object, Integral-field, and High-resolution modes of a potential UVI

The Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) is NASA's next-generation astrophysics platform, delivering transformative capability in the search for life and study of the origins of the universe. Amongst the instruments under consideration for HWO is a multi-purpose ultraviolet spectrograph and imager that provides a deep toolbox for some of the most pressing science investigations of the next several decades. In this paper, we present a basic draft model of a potential UVI, including a multi-object spectrograph, far ultraviolet imager, high resolution spectrograph, and integral-field spectrograph. The draft designs for these channels of the UV instrument serve as a basis for a general discussion of the instrument architecture and design challenges, while also identifying potential trades, enhancements, and other considerations that the HWO project will need to address as it moves into the formulation phase. We conclude with a presentation of several scientific simulations that have helped guide the capabilities of the draft design. This paper is intended to serve as a summary of UV instrument modes, technology, and potential design ahead of planned instrument studies in the late 2020's, and then Phase A in the early 2030's.
