Bilayer Lithium Niobate Acoustic Resonators for Spurious-Free Wideband Operation at 6 GHz

Abstract

The evolution of wireless communication standards toward higher frequencies and wider bandwidths places increasing demands on acoustic filter technologies. Conventional resonators face scaling limitations above 5 GHz, where lithographic constraints, reduced electromechanical coupling coefficient (k2eff), and spurious mode excitation hinder practical filter implementation. Here, we introduce a bilayer X-cut lithium niobate (LiNbO3) thickness-shear bulk acoustic resonator architecture that leverages symmetry engineering as a new design degree of freedom. By vertically stacking two piezoelectric thin films with a tailored bonding angle, the second-order thickness-shear mode (SH2, slow) is selectively excited. Furthermore, the fast thickness-shear modes inherent to X-cut LiNbO3 are suppressed, yielding a spurious-free in-band response. Devices operating around 6 GHz demonstrate a k2eff of approximately 35%, in close agreement with finite-element simulations and confirming the symmetry-driven mode selection mechanism. Proof-of-concept ladder filters demonstrate a fractional bandwidth of 18.6%, highlighting the wideband capabilities of the proposed architecture. The proposed configuration enables thickness-defined frequency scaling while maintaining high coupling and spectral purity, offering a promising platform for wideband radiofrequency filters in next-generation wireless systems.

Hyperbolic dynamic friction models for viscoelastic sliding and rolling contact

This paper considers the sliding and rolling contact between viscoelastic bodies. Combining linear viscoelastic rheologies for bristle-like elements with nonlinear dynamic friction models, and under the assumption of small deformations and displacement gradients, it derives a class of viscoelasto-kinematic equations, formulated as a system of semilinear partial differential equations (PDEs) governing the evolution of the frictional force, bristle deformations, and internal state variables at the interface between the contacting bodies. The resulting system is analysed mathematically, demonstrating that linear viscoelasticity preserves the hyperbolic character of the PDE systems typically encountered in rolling contact. The proposed theory is illustrated through representative examples of both sliding and rolling contact, highlighting that these two processes, whilst often treated as distinct, may in fact exhibit closely related underlying dynamics. Overall, the framework provides a general theoretical setting applicable to a broad class of viscoelastic frictional systems.

Ternary-Valued Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method: Asymptotic Agreement with the Yee Scheme Through Noise-Shaped Quantisation

I show that finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) dynamics can be reproduced using field variables restricted to the ternary alphabet ${-1,0,+1}$. The integration is carried out by a state accumulator, while quantisation is done by a second-order noise-shaped encoder with a separate error register. The Courant number $S$ plays two roles: it is the exact fixed-point ratio and also sets the encoder's oversampling ratio. When $S$ is chosen as a power of two, each cell update requires neither run-time multiplication nor floating-point arithmetic, and each emitted field symbol is represented by just two bits. The ternary scheme converges asymptotically to the standard Yee scheme as $S$ decreases towards zero. I report wall-clock and instruction counts relative to a floating-point reference, long-time energy integrations over $2\times10^{5}$ steps and the $S$ required to achieve a prescribed accuracy for the driven mode. Extending the approach to acoustics, Virieux-type elastodynamics and Schrodinger-equation solvers is a prospective direction towards a broader class of quantised physics solvers for resource-constrained and specialised hardware.

Integrated assessment of tritium releases from fission and fusion energy systems and their environmental implications

Tritium is a naturally occurring radioactive isotope of hydrogen; a low-energy beta emitter with its health significance through internal exposure. The anticipated deployment of fusion energy systems is expected to increase tritium production significantly. Here we present an integrated assessment of tritium generation, release pathways, and resulting environmental concentrations across existing and emerging nuclear technologies. We first compile a comprehensive database of tritium production and releases from monitoring reports and literature. Analysis of light-water-reactor operating data shows that tritium discharge levels and release pathways are governed mainly by plant-specific strategies rather than reactor power or design parameters. This pattern reflects industry operating practices and efforts, with releases remaining well below regulatory limits. Our synthesis further indicates that FLiBe-based (Li2BeF4) systems may increase tritium production and mobility through enhanced permeation of tritiated hydrogen, although mitigation strategies are available to further limit emissions. Environmental transport modeling suggests that, under appropriate siting conditions, resulting tritium concentrations remain below regulatory thresholds. Furthermore, comparative risk analysis indicates that the associated carcinogenic impacts are expected to be lower than those from fossil-fuel-based power generation. Together, these findings demonstrate the importance of a comprehensive monitoring framework for contextualizing and managing routine effluent releases across energy systems.
