Magnon Polarization Textures and Transport in Antiferromagnets and Altermagnets

Abstract

Antiferromagnets (AFMs) host magnons that can exhibit fully circular, elliptic and linear polarizations of sublattice magnetization dynamics. We analyze theoretically different momentum-space magnon polarization textures and magnon transport in collinear AFMs and altermagnets (AMs). The sensitivity of the polarization texture to a magnon momentum direction determines two regimes of magnon polarization kinetics: The Dyakonov-Perel relaxation or its dephasing due to asynchronous Larmor precession. For an easy-axis AFM, magnetic field parallel to the N{é}el vector leads to the suppression of the magnetic dipolar interaction-induced Dyakonov-Perel relaxation, accompanied by the increase in the magnon spin-diffusion length and its counter-intuitive growth with temperature. For a perpendicular orientation, instead, relaxation of circular polarization of magnons is enhanced due to Larmor precession. Finally, extremely anisotropic relaxation of magnon polarization is predicted for AMs or AFMs having Dzyaloshinskii-Morya interaction.

Discontinuous-Property Mechanical Metamaterials: A Framework for Discontinuous Lattice Dynamics

Discontinuity, as the extreme limit of nonlinearity, is common in macroscopic continuum systems. This work introduces discontinuous-property mechanical metamaterials (DPMMs) as a prototype for establishing a geometric-mechanics framework for discontinuous lattice systems. We extend band theory to systems with complementary constraints through geometric regularization and analyze modal discontinuities. By analyzing its static, modal, and transient responses, we validated discontinuous stiffness and Poisson's ratio, alongside intense nonlinear wave mixing and mode conversion. A proof-of-concept experiment demonstrates the practical feasibility of implementing DPMMs. This work characterizes discontinuous lattice systems through the intuitive DPMM concept and provides a practical framework to harness sharp transitions in mechanical metamaterials for nonlinear wave manipulation.

Non-Hermitian Skin Effect from Radiative Coupling in a Reciprocal Chiral Medium

We show that long-range radiative coupling in a passive chiral medium produces an unusual non-Hermitian skin effect in a chain of dipoles. The skin-mode profile consists of a long-range light-line branch-cut contribution, a non-exponential factor $1/[n(\ln n)^2]$ with $n$ being the site number. Finite-chain calculations show that part of the open-boundary spectrum contracts toward the Bloch spectrum, whereas the number of boundary-localized modes remains extensive. The retarded radiative coupling makes both the real-space profile and the finite-size spectral signatures of boundary localization depart from standard finite-range and pure exponential coupling theory.

Momentum conservation for ab initio calculations with pseudopotentials via a phase space electronic structure formulation

We demonstrate how to build a robust phase space electronic Hamiltonian $\hat{H}_\text{PS}(\boldsymbol{R},\boldsymbol{P})$ that depends on nuclear position $\boldsymbol{R}$ and nuclear momentum $\boldsymbol{P}$ in the presence of ionic pseudopotentials. In particular, we show that in order to account for the non-local component of a pseudopotential while also conserving linear and angular momentum, one is forced to introduce a non-local one-electron operator $\hat{\boldsymbolΓ}^\text{nl}$ that couples electronic and nuclear momenta together. To test the validity of our ansatz, we derive a generalized form of Nafie's exact equality (which relates electronic momentum and electronic position) so as to include the presence of pseudopotentials. We then benchmark our proposed phase space electronic structure theory against this generalized Nafie-like result for a diverse set of diatomic molecules spanning a wide range of elements. We find excellent agreement across this ab initio test set, highlighting the strength of our method in capturing meaningful electronic momentum beyond the Born-Oppenheimer framework.
