A Novel Approach to Identify Unseen Companions: An In-Depth study of GDR3 220_28

Abstract

Emission lines in the spectrum and the excess seen in the spectral energy distribution (SED) at infrared (IR) wavelengths serve as crucial indicators of accretion activity and the presence of gas and dust in the circumstellar environment of a young star. As accretion ceases over several million years, the H$α$ emission diminishes. However, IR excess combined with negligible H$α$ emission could also extend to indicate certain close binary systems, where a circumbinary disk contributes to the observed excess. Additionally, in unresolved binaries, companion stars can contribute to the photometry, leading to inaccuracies in parameter measurements and skewed positions in the color-magnitude diagram (CMD). We identify a photometrically peculiar object from a survey of the Cepheus star-forming regions (SFRs), Gaia DR3 2205212960562531328, exhibiting a shift from its expected position in the CMD, as indicated by the Gaia optical photometry. This peculiarity drives our research, prompting an investigation through an approach that combines astrometric accuracy, photometric modeling and spectroscopic studies. The Gaia XP spectrum of the source shows a systematic blue excess, indicating an additional hotter unresolved component. Two-component SED modelling yields a companion with $T_{\rm eff}\sim27000$ K and $\log g\ge4.5$, consistent with sdB stars. Further CMD and spectroscopic analyses support a binary system consisting of an A0-type PMS star with an sdB companion. In addition, ZTF photometry shows tentative evidence for a periodicity of 0.498 days. This study paves the way for a systematic search of similar binary systems that would otherwise remain unidentified.

Velocity dispersion of Solar Energetic Particles in turbulent heliosphere

Solar Energetic Particles (SEPs) are a signature of solar eruptions, and to link them to acceleration mechanisms many studies investigate their injection time at the Sun, $t_{sun}$. We assess velocity dispersion analysis (VDA), an often-used method to derive $t_{sun}$. We use full-orbit simulations of 1--100 MeV SEP protons in a novel model of the interplanetary magnetic turbulence superposed on a Parker Spiral magnetic field. The turbulence is described analytically as dominant transverse fluctuations that are 2D with respect to the mean field, supplemented with a minor contribution of asymptotically slab turbulence modes. We determine simulated SEP intensities for three turbulence strengths and use VDA to obtain $t_{sun}$ and the apparent path length $s$ of the SEPs, employing an SEP onset threshold to mimic a realistic energetic proton background before the SEP event. We find that turbulence strongly affects $t_{sun}$ and $s$. For weak and moderate turbulence, VDA estimates of $t_{sun}$ are 2-16 minutes after the actual solar injection time, and the path lengths are 0.2-0.3 au longer than the Parker spiral. For strong turbulence, the path lengths are $>5$ au, considerably longer than those typically obtained from SEP observations. We also investigate the effect of energy-dependence of the pre-event proton background, and find that different background spectra result in 5-20-minute difference in VDA injection times, depending on the heliolongitude. We conclude that in many cases VDA-derived injection times include a significant contribution from turbulence and/or the pre-event background and are not an accurate estimate of the acceleration time.

Multi-Height Spectropolarimetric Signatures of Magnetoacoustic Waves in Solar Plage

We analyze high-cadence spectropolarimetric observations of solar plage obtained with the Visible Spectro-Polarimeter (ViSP) on the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) to investigate low-chromospheric waves sampled by the Na I D1 5896 Angstrom and Ca II 8542 Angstrom lines. Observations were taken at an oblique viewing angle, providing sensitivity to transverse motions. Magnetic oscillations within plage elements exhibit significant line-of-sight (LOS) RMS amplitudes of approximately 9 G on average in the Na I D1 line, whereas the corresponding Ca II oscillations are only marginally above the noise level. Adaptive profile tracking provided line-core intensities and Doppler velocities, the weak-field approximation provided LOS magnetic fields, and non-LTE inversions provided mass densities and formation heights. Cross-spectral analysis shows velocity-intensity phase distributions coupled at -90 degrees, consistent with compressive oscillations. The velocity phases in Na I-Ca II indicate upward propagation and the phase speeds are predominantly sub-Alfvenic, consistent with slow magnetoacoustic waves. Although the slit geometry prevents a definitive identification of the tube eigenmode, the differing magnetic phase relationships suggest a height-dependent sausage-like behavior in the coupling between the magnetic and compressive perturbations. Additionally, our inferred wave fluxes are insufficient to heat active-region plage.

High-Angular-Resolution Survey of Stars within 18 pc of the Sun: Part I

We present the rationale, design, methodology, and observational facilities of a high-angular-resolution imaging survey of stars within 18~pc of the Sun. Our comprehensive sample consists of 2047 stars compiled from Gaia eDR3 and complementary catalogs. The main goal is to observe as many stars from this sample as possible using high-angular-resolution techniques, considering their inherent limitations, to perform astrometry of known binary systems and determine detection limits for secondary components for each observed star. This approach may also allows us to identify previously unresolved stellar companions. Observations were carried out using the 2.1-m telescope at OAN-SPM in the North and the 3.58-m NTT in the South, employing high-speed cameras for speckle imaging. We obtained observations of 703 stars with V < 14 mag at OAN-SPM, and 645 stars with I < 16 mag at the NTT, of which 140 stars were observed in both hemispheres, for a total of 1208 unique stars observed. In this paper: (1) we present the construction of the catalog of 2047 stars within 18 pc; (2) using a control sample of 70 known close binaries within 18 pc with separations 1", we show that selecting targets based on Gaia quality parameters commonly used as binarity indicators--RUWE, ipd_frac_odd_win, and ipd_frac_multi_peak--can miss a significant fraction of binaries, justifying our unbiased, volume-limited survey; and (3) we present the results of pilot observations conducted with the 2.1 m telescope at OAN-SPM in July 2022. A full analysis of the complete sample will be presented in of forthcoming papers.
