Cooperation, Defection, and the Commons: Reproducing an Agent-Based Model of Aksum with Three Logistic Equations

Abstract

Cooperative behavior can improve environmental quality, whereas selfish defection can degrade shared resources. In a recent agent-based study of the Aksum civilization (Vasellini et al., 2025), a population of agents moving over a reconstructed landscape and playing a local Public Goods Game grew faster and peaked higher when the game was enabled, but settled, in the long run, at the same population level as when it was not. Here we show that this behavior does not depend on the many rules of that model. We develop a theoretical ecological model of three coupled discrete-time equations, in which two sub-populations grow logistically and share a carrying capacity that rises when cooperators are sufficiently numerous and decays otherwise. Without fitting any parameter to the simulation, the equations reproduce its qualitative behavior: an initial boom, damped oscillations, and stabilization; a higher peak when the cooperative mechanism is active; and a final equilibrium that does not depend on it. Cooperation can be self-sustained for a transient period, but in the absence of measures that mitigate free-riding it collapses, and the environmental gains it produced are lost with it.

The Steel Scrap Age: Bridging the Quality Gap through Structural Supply Chain Reorganization

The transition to a circular economy is pivotal for industrial decarbonization, particularly in the energy-intensive steel sector. While recycling scrap via electric arc furnaces offers a low-carbon alternative to primary production, the accumulation of contaminants in post-consumer steel threatens to render secondary material unusable for high-grade applications. This quality problem creates a market failure where traditional spot markets cannot guarantee the material provenance required for high quality (e.g. automotive-grade) steel. Here we show, using a massive longitudinal analysis of 1,163,561,858 news articles combined with global trade network data, that the industry addresses this partly through direct, vertically integrated alliances. We demonstrate that steelmakers are bypassing intermediaries to forge sovereign, closed-loop ties with manufacturers, effectively substituting market mechanisms with organizational integration. This reorganization coexists with a division between circular network cores in the Americas and Europe that pair their steel and scrap flows most tightly within their region, and economies whose steel and scrap flows are far less matched. At firm level, the quality of the returned scrap is a stated reason in twelve of thirty-six reciprocal loops closing after 2020 and in none of the eight loops detected before. Our results indicate that the circular economy is evolving into a geopolitical contest for material control, where competitive advantage is defined by the sovereign possession of closed material cycles rather than mere cost efficiency.

Energy-barrier characterization of secured basins in coupled oscillators with inertia

The second-order Kuramoto model captures rotor dynamics relevant to synchronization in power grids. In actual power grids, violation of angle-stability limits can trigger protective actions that are not included in the model, restricting its validity to trajectories that remain within these limits. We therefore define the secured basin as the region of disturbance space comprising disturbances whose trajectories remain within the angle-stability limits throughout the transient. We then characterize the secured basin through energy barriers, quantifying their characteristic energy scale and heterogeneity across perturbation directions. Across seven power-grid models, this characterization revealed angle-stability vulnerabilities overlooked when stability is assessed solely by the final synchronization state. It also showed that the two energy-barrier measures characterizing the secured basin exhibit distinct associations with structural connectivity and dynamical parameters. This characterization further offers practical advantages, as energy thresholds derived from state-space perturbations remain effective in distinguishing secured and unsecured outcomes under short-duration power disturbances and can be estimated efficiently by concentrating simulations near the secured-basin boundary. Overall, the secured-basin framework provides a useful basis for distinguishing node-level structural and dynamical influences on transient stability in oscillator networks with synchronization constraints.

Unraveling persistent urban-rural gaps: A long-term provincial analysis of residential heating and cooling loads

Climate change and rising thermal comfort demand make residential heating and cooling central to building-sector decarbonization. This study presents a bottom-up modeling framework to estimate residential heating and cooling loads across 30 Chinese provinces. The model, developed using EnergyPlus simulations of representative building prototypes, captures heating and cooling load patterns in both urban and rural housing over the period 1980-2024. The results indicate that: (1) In 2020, Guangdong recorded the highest cooling loads (76.5 TWh/a urban; 63.0 TWh/a rural). Henan exhibited the highest rural heating load (174.6 TWh/a), while urban heating loads were highest in Liaoning and Shandong. (2) Between 1980 and 2024, average urban cooling loads increased from 12.4 to 15.1 kWh/m2a, whereas rural cooling loads declined from 22.63 to 19.87 kWh/m2a. Urban heating loads decreased from 44.08 to 39.92 kWh/m2a, and rural heating loads declined more markedly from 100.15 to 72.42 kWh/m2a. (3) Urban residential floor area has exceeded rural stock in 22 provinces in recent years, compared with only four provinces in 2000. Moreover, the existence of 12 urban energy-efficiency standards versus a single rural standard reflects a persistent regulatory disparity. Counterfactual and factor-contribution analyses further indicate that the associated envelope-performance gap is a major contributor to urban-rural load-intensity differences, while building form has a more context-dependent influence. The proposed framework provides a replicable basis for region-specific clean heating strategies and differentiated building standards to support carbon neutrality.
