Soft-to-Rigid: Shape Continuation as an Alternative Search for Packing Congruent Shapes

Abstract

Searches for dense packings of congruent shapes move rigid pieces. Hardening starts each piece as its inscribed disk and deforms it into the target shape while the container is compressed. We ask whether it is a search worth running alongside existing ones, and test it at matched budget and comparable tuning against rigid starts, growth, simulated annealing and perturbation--compression on seven families of squares, triangles, hexagons and disks in squares, triangles and circles (188 instances), scoring each method by the lowest container size it reaches. Hardening is not a better default: tuned rigid starts reach the lowest size most often. It is a different search. On squares in a square it reaches packings the other four methods miss, including Trump's n = 11 and Wainwright's n = 19 in 32 runs per method, and in a targeted follow-up campaign at ten times the budget (16 runs per method) it is the only one to reach the best known packings for n = 17 and n = 26, while annealing alone reaches n = 27. In exploratory ablations, compressing disks and then switching to polygons at once, or growing rigid polygons along hardening's area schedule, shows no detectable difference from rigid starts, and hardening's unique packings contain more tilted pieces. The bias costs elsewhere: hardening is worse on triangles and on four families held out from all development, where the short-pilot policy we tested showed no detected advantage over always starting rigid. Shape continuation is an alternative search that reaches different packings, worth keeping beside rigid ones; we did not show that splitting a fixed budget between them pays, and we have no test that predicts where it helps. Search campaigns were planned before they ran, with amendments, exploratory analyses and post-hoc checks identified separately; every run is replayable and every number is generated from an event log.

Effects of Charge Regulation on the Conformations and Dynamics of a Polyelectrolyte during Nanoparticle Adsorption

Customizing the surface characteristics and stimuli-responsive behavior of polyelectrolyte (PE) during interaction with nanoparticles (NP) have potential applications ranging from biological interactions to advanced diagnostic technologies. Using numerical simulations, we investigate how charge regulation (CR) shapes the conformation, dynamics and adsorption of PE on a oppositely charged NP and compared the results with constant charge (CC) conditions. At low solvent ion concentrations, CR barely affects the adsorption fraction, while significantly enhancing the dynamical response of the PE. However, at high ion concentrations, while complexation is suppressed in the CC case, the CR environment helps to overcome the energy barriers related to Debye screening and thermal fluctuations, thereby promoting the adsorption. By maintaining the strong PE-NP electrostatic interaction, PE exhibits a more directed ballistic-like dynamics towards NP during adsorption, in comparison to the diffusive and sub-diffusive behavior observed in the CC case. Our results emphasize that in high ion concentrations, with a strong Debye screening effect, a small fraction of charge-fluctuating sites suffices for adsorption to happen. A tunable CR mechanism is thus an efficient and robust strategy to control the biomolecular interaction and stability in complex environments.

Evolution of dense liquid marbles under light tapping

Liquid marbles interface is composed by a dense network of grains trapped by capillarity at their surface. The mix of capillarity and granular character make their interfaces remarkable, allowing non wetting, high mobility and strong robustness which are a basis for numerous applications. A canonical experiment showing out of equilibrium nature of granular material is the so called tapping experiment, where a dry granular medium under vertical vibration reorganize an evolve toward a denser final state function of the vibration amplitude In this paper we explore the out of equilibrium nature of densely covered liquid marbles by measuring their shape, compaction and stresses evolution under vertical vibration. We show that liquid marble do indeed reorganize when submitted to taps, leading to higher internal pressure and lower effective surface tension.

Ionic gradients shape the spatial organization and dynamics of supramolecular polymers

Living supramolecular materials such as microtubules and actin filaments assemble and function in dynamic, heterogeneous environments, subject to chemical concentration gradients. Their rapid and precise response to such gradients---via aggregation, disassembly, or autonomous motion---underlies the fine spatiotemporal control typical of living systems. Reproducing such responsiveness in synthetic materials is a central challenge in materials science and requires a molecular-level understanding of how gradients couple to supramolecular structure and dynamics, which remains difficult to access experimentally. To this end, we combine implicit-solvent coarse-grained molecular dynamics (MD) with the constant chemical potential MD (C$μ$MD) technique to investigate, at molecular resolution, the coupling of two prototypical supramolecular polymer models with externally imposed ionic concentration gradients. Despite their contrasting responses to homogeneous ionic conditions, both systems undergo pronounced spatial reorganization under the gradient, generating regions of locally enhanced supramolecular activity that are inaccessible to homogeneous systems with the same overall content of self-assembling species. Crucially, the local supramolecular dynamics is largely determined by the local concentrations, consistent with the formation of local quasi-equilibria: this direct connection between spatial composition and supramolecular activity emerges as a common governing principle across the two models. These findings shed light on the spatially complex supramolecular response that can be triggered by chemical gradients, and show how a single gradient simulation can encode this response across a continuous range of local chemical environments, thus providing a general strategy to investigate and design materials operating under spatially heterogeneous conditions.
