Physical characterization of Earth's quasi-satellite 2025 PN7

Abstract

A hypothetical origin as lunar ejecta for Earth's quasi-satellites (QS) has gained initial support in recent years, but there is scarce photometric and/or spectroscopic data to support the premise due to the rare observational windows to obtain such data for these small objects. One of the key pieces of evidence supporting the lunar-origin hypothesis, the lunar-like, very red reflectance spectrum of QS (469219) Kamo'oalewa, was recently found to be flawed. We present reflectance spectroscopy of Earth's QS 2025~PN$_7$ obtained with FORS2 at UT1-Antu of the ESO Very Large Telescope. This is only the second QS that has ever been characterized, the first being (469219) Kamo'oalewa, the sample-return target of the Tianwen-2 mission. Our results indicate that 2025~PN$_7$ exhibits a near-solar, flat visual spectrum, most consistent with the B-type in the Bus-DeMeo taxonomy. Our results therefore still support an asteroid-belt origin for most of Earth's QSs. The lunar-ejecta hypothesis can only be formally rejected with a larger sample of spectroscopically characterized QSs.

Testing the prevalence of hydrogen-silicate miscibility in young sub-Neptunes

Hydrogen-silicate miscibility can significantly alter the interior structure and thermal evolution of sub-Neptunes. We consider the interplay between this miscibility and stellar-driven atmospheric escape. We find that, for the first $\sim 100$ Myr, sub-Neptunes store most of their hydrogen content within their miscible interiors, protecting it from escape. As hydrogen is removed from the top of the atmosphere, more hydrogen is exsolved from the miscible interior, resupplying the envelope mass and delaying the planet's contraction when compared with models that do not account for miscibility. We construct a population-level Bayesian hierarchical inference model which tests for the prevalence of fully miscible sub-Neptunes. With conservative measurement uncertainty and no completeness corrections, we predict that $\sim 100-200$ observed young sub-Neptunes with measured radii, masses and ages $\lesssim 1$ Gyr are required to differentiate between fully miscible and immiscible models. This survey size requirement decreases with improved measurement uncertainty. Furthermore, one can reliably infer the underlying distributions of planetary initial conditions if completeness corrections are included in the analysis.

Volcanic Satellites and Ion Escape in the Magnetospheres of Ultra-Cool and Brown Dwarf Stars

Radio emissions at gigahertz frequencies of ultra-cool dwarf and brown dwarf stars suggest the presence of radiation belts not unlike Jupiter's. We investigate the possibility that the inferred magnetospheric plasma at the primary star is sourced by an active planet or via ion escape modeled as a weak ionospheric outflow. We consider indirect methods to estimate the magnetospheric plasma mass flow from auroral radio emission and apply them to the ultra-cool dwarf LSR J1835+3259. We find that an ionospheric outflow on the order of $10^{5}$ kg s$^{-1}$ is a viable source if the ionospheric effective Pedersen conductance is lower than $\sim 0.003$ mho. On the other hand, a tidally-heated volcanic satellite with the same mass and radius as Io and an orbit with a semimajor axis lower than about $10$ stellar radii, whose eccentricity ($e \sim 10^{-3}$) is maintained by perturbations by other planets in the system, is found to be a viable source of magnetospheric plasma without strong limitations on the ionospheric conductance. The volcanic satellite scenario is also naturally in sync with the recent finding that ultra-cool dwarfs with distant substellar or stellar companions are remarkably more likely to be detected as radio emitters.

3D Global Climate Simulations of Synthetic Mars Warming

Artificial warming via engineered aerosols presents a novel pathway to bypass volatile scarcity on modern Mars. Utilizing the Generic Planetary Climate Model, we evaluate the physical feasibility of aerosol-induced terraforming over a full Martian year (669 Sols). Unlike previous approaches that added aerosols to background dust or assumed continuous nanoparticle injection, we simulate the complete substitution of natural dust with a single-injection profile of radiatively active aluminium nanoparticles without continuous dumping. This tests whether initial infrared greenhouse forcing can overcome the severe ice-albedo cooling induced by a massive regional water-ice sheet ($3400 \text{ kg/m}^2$) localized in the Hellas Basin. Comparing this scenario against an unperturbed control run, we analyze surface temperature dynamics, sublimation fluxes, and water vapour concentration. Our 3D global climate simulations quantify the radiative-dynamical feedback thresholds and determine whether engineered aerosol forcing can trigger a self-sustaining water-vapour greenhouse effect or remains fundamentally limited by regional ice-albedo suppression in Hellas.
