Positivity of Wahl defects and representations from index-one covers

Abstract

Let \((X,E) \to (V,0)\) be the minimal good resolution of a normal complex surface singularity, with \(E\) reduced. The Wahl defect is \(Δ(V,0) :=h^1(\mathcal{O}_X)-h^1(S_X)+h^1(\bigwedge^2 S_X)\), where \(S_X=Θ_X(-\log E)\). For non-Gorenstein \(\mathbb{Q}\)-Gorenstein singularities \((V,0)\), we prove that \(Δ(V,0)\geq0\), with equality precisely in the quasi-homogeneous case. This proves Wahl's Main Conjecture in this class and his \(\mathbb{Q}\)-Gorenstein and Rational Conjectures. The proof expresses \(Δ\) as the multiplicity of the canonical character in a representation constructed from differential forms and residues. We also prove \(Δ+4p_g\geq0\) for arbitrary normal surface singularities, with equality precisely for rational quasi-homogeneous singularities. For smoothings of rational surface singularities, we give a Riemann--Roch formula for the lengths of the cokernels of the restriction maps to the central fiber for all reflexive canonical powers, in terms of the Milnor number and periodic local Riemann--Roch corrections. This yields numerical and representation-theoretic criteria for \(\mathbb{Q}\)-Gorenstein smoothings, defined as quotients of equivariant smoothings of the index-one cover with trivial group action on the base. If a rational singularity admits a \(\mathbb{Q}\)-Gorenstein smoothing, such smoothings are precisely those with minimal Milnor number, or equivalently those whose smoothing components have minimal dimension. Combining these results, we prove that every rational homology disk smoothing is \(\mathbb{Q}\)-Gorenstein, has a rational weighted homogeneous central fiber, and occurs over a one-dimensional smoothing component. Together with the known weighted homogeneous classification, this completes the analytic classification of normal surface singularities admitting rational homology disk smoothings.

On the fundamental groups of subelliptic varieties

We show that the fundamental group of any smooth subelliptic variety is finite. Moreover, it is also proved that every finite group can be realized as the fundamental group of a smooth subelliptic variety. As a consequence, it follows that there exists a smooth subelliptic variety homotopy equivalent to the $n$-sphere if and only if $n>1$. This result can be considered as a negative answer to the algebraic version of Gromov's problem on the homotopy types of Oka manifolds.

Minimal energy local systems on curves

Let $Σ_{g,n}$ be an orientable topological surface of genus $g$ with $n$ punctures. When $g = 0$, Deroin and Tholozan studied the class of supra-maximal representations $π_1(Σ_{0,n})\to \mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$, and they showed that the supra-maximal representations form a compact component of a real relative character variety. We study a collection of rank $r$ local systems on $Σ_{g,n}$ which we call of minimal energy. These are generalizations of supra-maximal representations, and underlie polarizable complex variations of Hodge structure for any choice of complex structure on $Σ_{g,n}$. Like the supra-maximal representations, the minimal energy local systems form compact components of relative character varieties of real forms of $\mathrm{GL}_r(\mathbb{C})$. We show that when the local monodromy data around the punctures is chosen to be unitary and generic, and the relative character variety is nonempty, these minimal energy local systems always exist. When $g > 0$, we show that the minimal energy local systems come from unitary representations of $π_1(Σ_{g,n})$. If $g = 0$ we show that they do not always come from unitary representations, and we study their structure in general.

Hypergeometric local systems and parabolic bundles

Beukers and Heckman gave necessary and sufficient conditions for a hypergeometric function $_n F_{n-1}$ to be algebraic. We give a new proof of this theorem by passing through the Mehta-Seshadri correspondence. In particular, we explicitly write down the parabolic bundle corresponding to a unitary hypergeometric local system.
