Constructions and reductions on the Hornich-Hlawka inequality and its generalizations

Abstract

We investigate five open problems concerning the Hornich-Hlawka inequality and its generalizations posed by Marinescu and Niculescu. We give constructive answers to three of them. First, we construct an equivalent norm on $\ell^2$ with no three-dimensional Hornich-Hlawka subspace. Second, we present a Nakano space that is not Hornich-Hlawka. Third, we show that the $α$-power generalization of the Hornich-Hlawka inequality fails to hold on nonzero normed spaces when $α\in (1, 2) \cup (2, \infty)$. This implies that on every nonzero inner product space, the $α$-power generalization of the Hornich-Hlawka inequality holds for all triples precisely when $α\in (0,1] \cup \{2\}$. For the remaining two problems, we establish reductions. We prove that $\ell^p(N)$ is Hornich-Hlawka for all $N \geq 3$ and $2 < p \leq \log 3 /(\log 3 - \log 2)$ if and only if it is Hornich-Hlawka at $N = 3$ and $p = \log 3 /(\log 3 - \log 2)$. Finally, for $p(\cdot): (0, 1) \to [1, 2]$ measurable and integers $k \geq 0$, we establish a Sobolev-Nakano equivalence: we prove that $W^{k,p(\cdot)}(0,1)$, equipped with the sum of the Luxemburg norms of its derivatives of orders $0, \ldots, k$, is Hornich-Hlawka if and only if $L^{p(\cdot)}(0,1)$ is Hornich-Hlawka.

Non-linear Dirichlet Functionals: Markovianity, Locality, Invariance

We present in a unified setting the foundations for a theory of non-linear Dirichlet functionals on Hilbert spaces. We prove known and new equivalences between non-linear semigroups, non-linear resolvents, non-linear generators, and their energy functionals, including a complete characterization of Markovianity. We introduce and characterize strong notions of invariance for general lower semicontinuous convex functionals, and notions of locality and strong locality for non-linear Dirichlet functionals. Contrary to many partial results in the literature, these characterizations are complete under minimal natural assumptions, and reduce to the classical ones in the bilinear case. Our definitions and proofs simplify and clarify the analogous facts in the linear theory, showing in particular that (the equality defining) locality is a saturation of (the inequality defining) Markovianity.

Löwner equations and de Branges--Rovnyak spaces

We study one-parameter families of de Branges--Rovnyak spaces associated with the radial and chordal Löwner equations. Our approach is based on a classical but little-known technique of the de Branges school. In this paper, we recast this technique in the theory of direct integrals and integral operators. As an application, we prove Fourier-type expansion theorems induced by the Löwner equations, and give answers to a problem posed by Fricain--Hartmann--Ross.

On one relaxation of the bounded-length-distortion condition in the context of metric measure spaces

We reformulate the bounded-length-distortion condition for maps between metric spaces in a certain relaxed form that requires the presence of a reference measure on the source space, which makes the new approach more natural from the perspective of maps from metric measure spaces to metric spaces. Within this framework, we establish some mapping results in an entirely singular setting of the following general structure: a metric measure space of finite Hausdorff dimension admits a map with the relaxed bounded-length-distortion condition into a finite-dimensional normed space.
