The medium is the message: How neurometabolic entanglement generates conscious experience

Abstract

Most neuroscientific accounts of consciousness assume that conscious experience is constituted by the information conveyed between neurons. The physical-chemical details of the metabolic and physiological processes that convey this information are correspondingly presumed to be relevant only insofar as they support the organization of information processes. We describe an alternative perspective that denies this presumed independence of the processing of neural information and the metabolic-physiological details of these processes. We call this alternative paradigm the theory of neuro-metabolic entanglement (NME). NME proposes that mental experience exemplifies the inseparability of the organization of neural information processes from the constraints imposed by the material-energetic properties of the neural medium itself. Central to this account is a recursive, Möbius-like loop of neural connections that entangles patterns of forebrain information processing with midbrain regulatory systems that modulate forebrain metabolism. This enables patterns of neural activity to indirectly modify the global distribution of metabolic resources underlying these information processes. It also constitutes a bottleneck that integrates diverse neural processes into an adaptively relevant unitary experience organized in terms of the global redistribution of metabolic support. Computational models of neural function cannot treat energy supply as a fixed background parameter; our proposed Möbius-like loop of neuro-metabolic entanglement offers a framework for future models in which neural activity is dynamically and recursively modulated by the network's own metabolism. Recognizing this entanglement is a first step toward dissolving the explanatory gap highlighted by the so-called "hard problem" of consciousness.

A Formalizable Proof of the No-Supervenience Theorem: A Diagonal Limitation on the Viability of Physicalist Theories of Consciousness

The no-supervenience theorem limits the capacity of physicalist theories to provide a comprehensive account of human consciousness. The proof of the theorem is difficult to formalize because it relies on both alethic and epistemic notions of possibility. This article outlines a formalizable proof using predicate modal logic in which the epistemic inferences are expressed in terms of an existing mathematical formalism, the inference device (Wolpert, 2008). The resulting proof shows definitely that any physicalist theory which describes a self-aware, intelligent system must be internally inconsistent.

Music Between Two Minds: Individual Signatures, Shared States, and the Emergence of Creative Interaction

Some of the most valued forms of human creativity arise between people-in conversation, collaboration, and improvised music-yet how two minds jointly regulate the flow of novelty in real time remains unknown. Here we examined the information dynamics of interpersonal improvisation using 986 professional jazz improvisations. Pitch-based fluctuations of uncertainty and surprise behaved as signatures of individual identity: the two partners differed within 90% of takes, performers were identifiable from single solos and the separation between partners persisted undiminished across turns and takes. Rhythm-based fluctuations showed the reverse organization: partners were statistically indistinguishable within a take yet shifted together from take to take, and this shared state drifted gradually as each performance progressed, with each performer moving away from their own past at the same rate as from their partner's. Beyond joint drift, solo hand-offs revealed turn-by-turn complementarity: when one performer exceeded their own average surprise in the predictive dynamics of improvisation, the partner's next solo fell below their own, in both pitch and rhythm and in all duos. Improvising pairs thus neither fuse into one system nor remain two independent ones: they preserve individual melodic voices while sharing a rhythmic state, within which moment-to-moment push-pull continually rebalances their interaction. Individuality and togetherness thus coexist, carried by different musical dimensions, a measurable organization of creativity that emerges between minds.

Dynamics of random recurrent neural networks: colored noise and sublinear activations

We study the dynamics of recurrent neural networks with random couplings, sublinear odd activation functions, and temporally correlated noise. Using large N methods, we determine stationary correlations and distinguish the loss of local linear stability from the onset of chaos, characterized by a positive largest Lyapunov exponent. These thresholds delimit an intermediate regime in which local instability coexists with asymptotic stability under a common noise history. Their separation depends on both the noise correlation time and the asymptotic growth of the activation function. We show that internal noise with any finite correlation time cuts off the divergence of the network's intrinsic correlation time tau_corr at the edge of chaos; it exhibits a critical scaling tau_{corr,max} propto 1/sqrt{D_0}, where D_0 is the integrated noise strength. Static random input instead produces coincident thresholds and a divergent correlation time. We also calculate the frequency-dependent participation dimension from a four-point correlation function. Its zero-frequency value is inversely proportional to the fourth power of the network correlation time, predicting a smooth minimum at the weak-noise chaos threshold. Numerical simulations support the large-network predictions and reveal appreciable finite-size effects.
