Dual medial axes in finite-dimensional normed spaces

Abstract

We study medial axes of nonempty closed sets in finite-dimensional real normed spaces whose norms are $C^1$ away from the origin. Using the differential of the norm, we define the dual $k$-medial axis by requiring the contact covectors associated with nearest points to have affine dimension at least $k-1$. In dimension $n$, we prove that this set is $(n-k+1)$-rectifiable for every $1\le k\le n+1$, and hence has Hausdorff dimension at most $n-k+1$. We give a direct geometric proof and characterize the dual medial axes through the superdifferential of the squared distance function, obtaining an alternative proof from a theorem of Alberti, Ambrosio, and Cannarsa on singularities of semiconvex functions. Under the additional assumption of strict convexity, the ordinary and dual medial axes coincide for $k=2,3$, yielding the corresponding rectifiability results for ordinary medial axes. For $k=4$, however, the ordinary rectifiability conclusion can fail even for norms arbitrarily close to Euclidean: we construct norms on $\mathbb R^3$ with smooth positively curved unit spheres arbitrarily $C^\infty$-close to the Euclidean sphere, together with four-point sets whose ordinary $4$-medial axes contain nondegenerate line segments.

On isoperimetric local-Bollobás-Thomason inequalities

We prove the following isoperimetric-type inequality: for every convex body $K$ in $\mathbb R^n$ and some $σ\subset[n]:=\{1,\dots,n\}$ there exists a suitable Hanner polytope $B_K$ with the same volume as $K$ and such that the volume of each of its orthogonal projections onto every subspace whose basis is formed by the canonical vectors $\{e_i:i\inτ\cup([n]\setminusσ)\}$, for every $τ\subseteqσ$, bounds from below the volume of the corresponding projections of $K$.

On the Geometry of Wasserstein Barycenter II: Riemannian Rigidity, Essential Non-Branching, and Finsler Models

Wasserstein barycenters provide a notion of weighted mean for probability measures on a metric space. We prove that the barycenter curvature-dimension condition ${\rm BCD}(K,N)$ is equivalent to ${\rm RCD}(K,N)$ for $K\in \mathbb R$ and $1<N<\infty$. This gives a new characterization of Riemannian curvature-dimension spaces by entropy inequalities at barycenters of finite families of measures. As a byproduct, we introduce an almost ${\rm BCD}$ condition that allows an additive error in the entropy inequality. It is stable under measured Gromov-Hausdorff convergence and implies essential non-branching when the error is sufficiently small. The resulting class contains non-Riemannian Finsler spaces. Within the ${\rm BCD}$ framework, this answers an open problem posed by Ambrosio in his 2018 ICM survey. We further bound the failure of the parallelogram identity for cotangent norms in terms of the entropy error.

On Densities in the Erdős-Falconer Distance Problems over the Integers

Motivated by the classical Erdős and Falconer distance problems and Magyar's work on distance sets in $\mathbb Z^d$, we study discrete analogues of the Erdős-Falconer unpinned and pinned distance problems over the integers. We ask how the discrete Hausdorff dimension of a set $A\subseteq\mathbb Z^d$ influences the size of its squared-distance sets, measured by generalized upper natural density and upper discrete mass dimension. We propose conjectures for both problems and prove the unpinned conjecture in dimensions $d=1,2,3$ and the pinned conjecture in dimensions $d=1,2$. For the unpinned problem in higher dimensions, we obtain explicit lower bounds for the dimensions of distance sets using elementary integer sphere counting, results on the Erdős distinct distances problem, and $\ell^p$-improving inequalities for discrete spherical averages. For the pinned problem, we obtain lower bounds for the dimensions of distance sets for some or every pin. We also establish more general results involving upper discrete mass dimension, upper discrete Banach dimension, and affine dimension, including bounds on the affine dimension of the exceptional set of pins. We construct examples showing that both conjectures are sharp in low dimensions. Further examples demonstrate how the distinctions among discrete Hausdorff dimension, upper discrete mass dimension, and upper discrete Banach dimension lead to different phenomena in the unpinned and pinned distance problems, including limitations on the nontrivial upper bounds these dimensions can provide for the dimensions of distance sets.
