Diffusive-dispersive traveling waves and kinetic relations. Generic flux with multiple inflection points

Abstract

We consider the broad class of scalar hyperbolic conservation laws with generic non-convex fluxes, which may thus have an arbitrary finite number of inflection points. We investigate the properties of classical and nonclassical shock waves realized as traveling-wave limits of a linear diffusive-dispersive regularization and provide a phase-plane classification beyond the case of a single inflection point. Within the speed range of the generalized Maxwell construction, our main result classifies the left outgoing profiles by their limiting equilibria. In an elementary bowtie configuration, we prove the existence of nonclassical shock profiles with arbitrarily many oscillations. For nested configurations, we order the saddle connections on each entry interval, taking account of inaccessible saddles. We show that the number of oscillations present in the non-classical shock depends on the diffusion-dispersion ratio, and tends to infinity along the elementary families of saddle connections as this ratio tends to zero. Our construction is based on a generalization of Maxwell's equal area rule, which provides us with an invariant region in the phase space for the study of diffusive-dispersive traveling waves.

Sharp Estimates for Jacobi Heat Kernels in Double Conic Domains

We study the even and odd Jacobi heat kernels defined in the context of the multidimensional double cone and its surface, the multidimensional hyperboloid and its surface, and the multidimensional paraboloid and its surface. By integrating the framework of Jacobi polynomials on these domains, as analyzed by Xu, with contemporary methods developed by Nowak, Sjögren, and Szarek for obtaining sharp estimates of the spherical heat kernel, we establish genuinely sharp estimates for the even and odd Jacobi heat kernel in the double conic settings, and for the even Jacobi heat kernel on hyperbolic settings. We also discuss the limitations encountered in extending these results to the remaining settings.

Phase separation in multiply periodic materials with fine microstructures

We study a Cahn-Hilliard model for phase separation in composite materials with multiple periodic microstructures. These are modeled by considering a highly oscillating potential. The focus of this paper is in the case where the scales of the microstructures are smaller than that of phase separation. We provide a compactness result and prove that the Γ-limit of the energy is a multiple of the perimeter. In particular, using the recently introduced unfolding operator for multiple scales, we show that the taking the limit of all of the scales together is equivalent to taking one limit at the time, starting from the smaller scale and keeping the larger fixed.

Shape differentials and sensitivity of the heat equation

We consider Dirichlet and Neumann problems for the heat equation in a domain containing an interior hole. The domain has a fixed outer boundary and a variable inner boundary determined by a diffeomorphism $ϕ$. We analyze the maps that assign to the infinite-dimensional shape parameter $ϕ$ the corresponding solutions, and we prove that they are smooth. Motivated by applications to inverse problems, we then compute the differentials with respect to $ϕ$ of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann and Neumann-to-Dirichlet maps.
