Torsion-induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in helical magnets

It has been shown that in magnets possessing an inversion center in the absence of deformations, a torsion-induced Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction (tiDMI) can arise. A microscopic mechanism for this interaction is described, involving the transfer of angular momentum to the lattice upon electron reflection from the magnet's boundary. An estimate of the tiDMI constant is provided. It is demonstrated that tiDMI can lift the chiral degeneracy in helimagnets, and a way for experimentally observing this effect is proposed.

Effective interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and skyrmion stabilization in ferromagnet/paramagnet and ferromagnet/superconductor hybrid systems

It is shown that a term in the form of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) contributes to the free energy of a ferromagnetic (FM) film on a paramagnetic (PM) (an FM above the critical temperature, Tc) or superconducting (SC) substrate occurring in the London limit. This contribution results from magnetostatic interaction between the film and substrate under which the substrate affects FM magnetization back via its magnetic field produced by magnetization inhomogeneity in the film. Strikingly, in the FM/PM system this effective DMI stabilizes chiral magnetic textures, e.g., magnetic skyrmions (MSk's) of the Neel-type, which is in contrast to that in the FM/SC one. A strong temperature sensitivity of the effective DMI allows for tuning the coupling between the FM film and PM or SC substrate and thus controlling the MSk radius in FM/PM.

Extrinsic tunnel Hall effect in CoFeB/MgO/Pt junctions

The Hall effect that occurs when current flows through a CoFeB/MgO/Pt tunnel junction is investigated. It is shown that the transverse voltage in Pt electrode is nonlinear on a DC voltage applied to the tunnel junction. It has both linear (odd) and quadratic (even) parts. The linear part contains well-known contributions of the anomalous Hall effect in the ferromagnetic electrode, inverse spin-hall effect in platinum and others. The quadratic part is a phenomenon caused by the spin-orbit scattering of electrons in an external electric field induced by a voltage applied to the barrier. This field reaches values of $10^9$ V/m which is close to internal atomic fields. The magnitude of both effects decreases as thickness of Pt electrode is increased due to shunting effects.

Temperature-sensitive spin-wave nonreciprocity induced by interlayer dipolar coupling in ferromagnet/X (X=paramagnet, superconductor) hybrid systems

Spin-wave (SW) spectra have theoretically been studied in a thin film of a ferromagnet (FM) on a substrate from a paramagnet (PM) (an FM above the critical temperature) or from superconductor (SC). A spin wave propagating in the FM induces the dynamic magnetization and superconducting current in the underlying PM and SC, respectively, which affect the SW propagation by their magnetic fields. As a result of this interaction, the SW spectrum becomes nonreciprocal to depend on the sign of the SW wave vector q. We show that the nonreciprocal contribution to the SW spectra in FM/PM and FM/SC systems is given by the frequency shift of Δω(q)=ω(q)-ω(-q)=a(T)(τ{\cdot}q) with τ=(n{\times}M) being the toroidal magnetic moment, M the FM magnetization, n the unit vector normal to the FM/PM(SC) interface, and a(T) the temperature-dependent constant of a dipole nature, whose sign depends on the substrate type. As the Δω(T) dependence is strong at temperatures T close to the critical temperature Tc for the FM-PM or normal metal-SC transition, one gets a possibility to control the frequency SW nonreciprocity with temperature variation near Tc. The dipolar mechanism we propose for SW frequency nonreciprocity is promising for introducing this property of SW propagation into functional devices.

Optical second harmonic generation from interfaces between heavy and ferromagnetic metals

Surfaces and interfaces of magnetic nanostructures can reveal rather interesting and unusual properties that differ substantially from those of bulky materials. Here we apply the surface-sensitive method of optical second harmonic generation (SHG) for the studies of magnetization induced effects that appear in the nonlinear reflection from interfaces between ferromagnetic (Co) and heavy metals (Pt, Ta, W, Au, Ag, Cu). We demonstrate the appearance of magnetization induced variation in the p-polarized SHG intensity in the geometry of the longitudinal magneto-optical Kerr effect that is forbidden for homogeneous magnetic structures. This confirms the existence of chiral magnetic states at heavy metal/ferromagnet interfaces that appear due to the surface-induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The related nonlinear chiroptical effect in the SHG intensity is proportional to the dc flexo-electric polarization that is shown to exist for chiral magnetic states at the considered interfaces.

Studying of the interlayer interaction in magnetic multilayers (FM/I/FM) measuring the FMR peak asymmetry

We experimentally study the interlayer interaction in a magnetic multilayer system ferromagnet/insulator/ferromagnet with different spacer thickness. We demonstrate that the sign and the magnitude of the interaction can be deduced from the FMR peak shape rather than from the FMR peak shift. The proposed technique allows studying the interlayer interaction using a single sample (without a reference sample for comparison).

Definition of the interlayer interaction type in magnetic multilayers analyzing the shape of the ferromagnetic resonance peaks

We present theoretical study of ferromagnetic resonance in a system of two coupled magnetic layers. We show that an interaction between the layers leads to the occurrence of the so-called Fano resonance. The Fano resonance changes the shape of the ferromagnetic resonance peak. It introduces a peak asymmetry. The asymmetry type is defined by the sign of the interaction between the magnetic layers. Therefore, studying the shape of the ferromagnetic resonance peaks one can define the type of the interlayer coupling (ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic). We show that using numerical simulations one can estimate a magnitude of the interaction by fitting the asymmetric resonance peaks.

Anisotropy of Neel "orange-peel" coupling in magnetic multilayers

We calculate the energy of the magnetostatic interaction between two ferromagnetic films with uniform magnetization and correlated interfaces (the "orange-peel" effect). The "orange-peel" coupling is anisotropic: the interaction is ferromagnetic when the films are magnetized in-plane; and it is antiferromagnetic when magnetization is out-of-plane. The interaction anisotropy can be used to distinguish the "orange-peel" effect from the interlayer exchange coupling.

High magnetocaloric efficiency of a NiFe/NiCu/CoFe/MnIr multilayer in a small magnetic field

The isothermal magnetic entropy changes are studied in Ni80Fe20/Ni67Cu33/Co90Cu10/Mn80Ir20 stacks at temperatures near the Curie point of the Ni67Cu33 spacer by applying magnetic fields in a few tens of Oersted. Such low fields were sufficient for toggling magnetic moments in the soft ferromagnetic (FM) layer (Ni80Fe20). It is found out that this switching provides the magnetic entropy change, which is up to 20 times larger than that achievable in a single Ni67Cu33 film subjected to such low fields. Our finding holds promise to be utilized in the magnetocaloric devices that would be based on FM/PM/FM heterostructures and would operate with moderate magnetic fields.

Spin current and second harmonic generation in non-collinear magnetic systems: the hydrodynamic model

We report a theoretical study of the second harmonic generation in a noncollinearly magnetized conductive medium with equilibrium spin current. The hydrodynamic model is used to unravel the mechanism of a novel effect of the double frequency signal generation due to the spin current. According to our calculations, this second harmonic response appears due to the "non-adiabatic" spin polarization of the conduction electrons induced by the oscillations in the non-uniform magnetization forced by the electric field of the electromagnetic wave. Together with the linear velocity response this leads to the generation of the double frequency spin current. This spin current is converted to the electric current via the inverse Spin Hall effect, and the double-frequency electric current emits the second harmonic radiation.

Interlayer interaction in multilayer CoPt/Co structures

We report a study of interlayer exchange interaction in multilayer CoPt/Co structures consisting of periodic CoPt multilayer film with an "easy axis" anisotropy and thick Co layer with an "easy plane" anisotropy separated by Pt spacer with variable thickness. The magnetooptical Kerr effect (MOKE) and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements show up the essentially non-collinear state of magnetic moments of the layers and strong exchange coupling between CoPt and Co subsystems. The estimation of effective anisotropy and exchange coupling in a simple model based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation describing magnetization dynamics was performed.

"Hall effect" for neutrons scattered by an A phase MnSi crystal

We study a neutron diffraction by A phase of MnSi using a dynamical theory of diffraction and three wave approximation. We show that the neutron diffraction is asymmetrical with respect to an incident plane. The asymmetry depends on a sign of an external magnetic field. This phenomenon can be considered as the Hall effect for neutrons.

Nonreciprocal transmission of neutrons through the noncoplanar magnetic system

We report on observation of the time reversal symmetry breaking in unpolarized neutrons scattering experiment. Neutron transmittivity through the system consisting of two magnetic mirrors placed in an external magnetic field is measured. Time reversal symmetry holds for coplanar magnetic configuration, meaning that transmitted intensity does not change when interchanging neutron source and detector. Contrarily, for noncoplanar magnetic configuration the time reversal symmetry breaks down. In this case the transmitted intensity changes when interchanging the source and detector. The observed time reversal symmetry breaking is the consequence of the one of the most fundamental properties of quantum mechanics, namely the non-commutativity of spin algebra.

Skyrmion-like states in multilayer exchange coupled ferromagnetic nanostructures with distinct anisotropy directions

We report the experimental observation of magnetic skyrmion-like states in patterned ferromagnetic nanostructures consisting of perpendicular magnetized Co/Pt multilayer film exchange coupled with Co nanodisks in vortex state. The magnetic force microscopy and micromagnetic simulations show that depending on the magnitude of Co/Pt perpendicular anisotropy in these systems two different modes of skyrmion formation are realized.

Non-reciprocal light scattering by lattice of magnetic vortices

We report on experimental study of optical properties of two-dimensional square lattice of triangle Co and CoFe nanoparticles with a vortex magnetization distribution. We demonstrate that intensity of light scattered in diffraction maxima depends on the vorticity of the particles magnetization and it can be manipulated by applying an external magnetic field. The experimental results can be understood in terms of phenomenological theory.

Non-reciprocity in elastic unpolarized neutron scattering by systems with non-coplanar magnetic structure

The paper provides a theoretical analysis for elastic unpolarized neutron scattering by systems having a non-coplanar magnetic induction spatial distribution. It is shown that reciprocity does not hold for neutron scattered by these systems. The scattering of unpolarized neutrons by a system of three magnetic mirrors and by a ferromagnetic particle in a "vortex" state is also explored.

Anti-vortex state in cross-like nanomagnets

We report on results of computer micromodelling of anti-vortex states in asymmetrical cross-like ferromagnetic nanostructures and their practical realization. The arrays of cobalt crosses with 1 mkm branches, 100 nm widths of the branches and 40 nm thicknesses were fabricated using e-beam lithography and ion etching. Each branch of the cross was tapered at one end and bulbous at the other. The stable formation of anti-vortex magnetic states in these nanostructures during magnetization reversal was demonstrated experimentally using magnetic force microscopy.
