Andreev reflection in s-type superconductor proximized 3D topological insulator

We investigate transport and shot noise in lateral N-TI-S contacts, where N is a normal metal, TI is a Bi-based three dimensional topological insulator (3D TI), and S is an s-type superconductor. In normal state, the devices are in the elastic diffusive transport regime, as demonstrated by a nearly universal value of the shot noise Fano factor $F_{\rm N}\approx1/3$ in magnetic field and in reference normal contact. In the absence of magnetic field, we identify the Andreev reflection (AR) regime, which gives rise to the effective charge doubling in shot noise measurements. Surprisingly, the Fano factor $F_{\rm AR}\approx0.22\pm0.02$ is considerably reduced in the AR regime compared to $F_{\rm N}$, in contrast to previous AR experiments in normal metals and semiconductors. We suggest that this effect is related to a finite thermal conduction of the proximized, superconducting TI owing to a residual density of states at low energies.

Superconducting Phase Domains for Memory Applications

In this work we study theoretically the properties of S-F/N-sIS type Josephson junctions in the frame of the quasiclassical Usadel formalism. The structure consists of two superconducting electrodes (S), a tunnel barrier (I), a combined normal metal/ferromagnet (N/F) interlayer and a thin superconducting film (s). We demonstrate the breakdown of a spatial uniformity of the superconducting order in the s-film and its decomposition into domains with a phase shift $π$ . The effect is sensitive to the thickness of the s layer and the widths of the F and N films in the direction along the sIS interface. We predict the existence of a regime where the structure has two energy minima and can be switched between them by an electric current injected laterally into the structure. The state of the system can be non-destructively read by an electric current flowing across the junction.

The Josephson current in Fe-based superconducting junctions: theory and experiment

We present theory of dc Josephson effect in contacts between Fe-based and spin-singlet $s$-wave superconductors. The method is based on the calculation of temperature Green's function in the junction within the tight-binding model. We calculate the phase dependencies of the Josephson current for different orientations of the junction relative to the crystallographic axes of Fe-based superconductor. Further, we consider the dependence of the Josephson current on the thickness of an insulating layer and on temperature. Experimental data for PbIn/Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(FeAs)$_2$ point-contact Josephson junctions are consistent with theoretical predictions for $s_{\pm}$ symmetry of an order parameter in this material. The proposed method can be further applied to calculations of the dc Josephson current in contacts with other new unconventional multiorbital superconductors, such as $Sr_2RuO_4$ and superconducting topological insulator $Cu_xBi_2Se_3$.

Anomalous Josephson effect in d-wave superconductor junctions on TI surface

We study Josephson effect of $d$-wave superconductor (DS)/ferromagnet insulator(FI)/DS junctions on a surface of topological insulator (TI). We calculate Josephson current $I\left(φ\right) $ for various orientations of the junctions where $φ$ is the macroscopic phase difference between two DSs. In certain configurations, we find anomalous current-phase relation $I(φ)=-I\left( -φ+π\right)$ with $2π$ periodicity. In the case where the first order Josephson coupling is absent without magnetization in FI, $I(φ)$ can be proportional to $\cos φ$. The magnitude of the obtained Josephson current is enhanced due to the zero energy states on the edge of DS on TI. Even if we introduce an $s$-wave component of pair potential in DS, we can still expect the anomalous current-phase relation in asymmetric DS junctions with $I\left( φ=0\right) \neq 0$. This can be used to probe the induced $d$-wave component of pair potential on TI surface in high-$T_{c}$ cuperate/TI hybrid structures.

Conductance spectroscopy of a proximity induced superconducting topological insulator

We study the proximity effect between the fully-gapped region of a topological insulator in direct contact with an s-wave superconducting electrode (STI) and the surrounding topological insulator flake (TI) in Au/Bi$_{1.5}$Sb$_{0.5}$Te$_{1.7}$Se$_{1.3}$/Nb devices. The conductance spectra of the devices show the presence of a large induced gap in the STI as well as the induction of superconducting correlations in the normal part of the TI on the order of the Thouless energy. The shape of the conductance modulation around zero-energy varies between devices and can be explained by existing theory of s-wave-induced superconductivity in SNN' (S is a superconductor, N a superconducting proximized material and N' is a normal metal) devices. All the conductance spectra show a conductance dip at the induced gap of the STI.

Observability of surface Andreev bound states in a topological insulator in proximity to an s-wave superconductor

To guide experimental work on the search for Majorana zero-energy modes, we calculate the superconducting pairing symmetry of a three-dimensional topological insulator in combination with an s-wave superconductor. In analogy to the case of nanowires with strong spin-orbit coupling we show how the pairing symmetry changes across different topological regimes. We demonstrate that a dominant p-wave pairing relation is not sufficient to realize a Majorana zero-energy mode useful for quantum computation. Our main result of this paper is the relation between odd-frequency pairing and Majorana zero energy modes by using Green functions techniques in three-dimensional topological insulators in the so-called Majorana regime. We discuss thereafter how the pairing relations in the different regimes can be observed in the shape of the tunneling conductance of an s-wave proximized three-dimensional topological insulator. We will discuss the necessity to incorporate a ferromagnetic insulator to localize the zero-energy bound state to the interface as a Majorana mode.

Josephson effect in SIFS-tunnel junctions with domain walls in weak link region

We study theoretically the properties of SIFS type Josephson junctions composed of two superconducting (S) electrodes separated by an insulating layer (I) and a ferromagnetic (F) film consisting of periodic magnetic domains structure with antiparallel magnetization directions in neighboring domains. The two-dimensional problem in the weak link area is solved analytically in the framework of the linearized quasiclassical Usadel equations. Based on this solution, the spatial distributions of the critical current density, $J_{C},$ in the domains and critical current, $I_{C},$ of SIFS structures are calculated as a function of domain wall parameters, as well as the thickness, $d_{F},$ and the width, $W,$ of the domains. We demonstrate that $I_{C}(d_{F},W)$ dependencies exhibit damped oscillations with the ratio of the decay length, $ξ_{1},$ and oscillation period, $ξ_{2},$ being a function of the parameters of the domains, and this ratio may take any value from zero to unity. Thus, we propose a new physical mechanism that may explain the essential difference between $ξ_{1}$ and $ξ_{2}$ observed experimentally in various types of SFS Josephson junctions.

Josephson magnetic rotary valve

We propose a control element for a Josephson spin valve. It is a complex Josephson device containing ferromagnetic (F) layer in the weak-link area consisting of two regions, representing $0$ and $π$ Josephson junctions, respectively. The valve's state is defined by mutual orientations of the F-layer magnetization vector and normal to the interface separating $0$ and $π$ sections of the device. We consider possible implementation of the control element by introduction of a thin normal metal layer in a part of the device area. By means of theoretical simulations we study properties of the valve's structure as well as its operation, revealing such advantages as simplicity of control, high characteristic frequency and good legibility of the basic states.

Detection of small exchange fields in S/F structures

Ferromagnetic materials with exchange fields E_ex smaller or of the order of the superconducting gap Delta are important for applications of corresponding (s-wave) superconductor/ ferromagnet/ superconductor (SFS) junctions. Presently such materials are not known but there are several proposals how to create them. Small exchange fields are in principle difficult to detect. Based on our results we propose reliable detection methods of such small E_ex. For exchange fields smaller than the superconducting gap the subgap differential conductance of the normal metal - ferromagnet - insulator - superconductor (NFIS) junction shows a peak at the voltage bias equal to the exchange field of the ferromagnetic layer, eV=E_ex. Thus measuring the subgap conductance one can reliably determine small E_ex < Delta. In the opposite case E_ex > Delta one can determine the exchange field in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiment. The density of states of the FS bilayer measured at the outer border of the ferromagnet shows a peak at the energy equal to the exchange field, E=E_ex. This peak can be only visible for small enough exchange fields of the order of few Delta.

Unexpected impact of magnetic disorder on multiband superconductivity

We analyze how the magnetic disorder affects the properties of the two-band $s_\pm$ and $s_{++}$ models, which are subject of hot discussions regarding iron-based superconductors and other multiband systems like MgB$_2$. We show that there are several cases when the transition temperature $T_c$ is not fully suppressed by magnetic impurities in contrast to the Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory, but a saturation of $T_c$ takes place in the regime of strong disorder. These cases are: (1) the purely interband impurity scattering, (2) the unitary scattering limit. We show that in the former case the $s_\pm$ gap is preserved, while the $s_{++}$ state transforms into the $s_\pm$ state with increasing magnetic disorder. For the case (2), the gap structure remains intact.

Anomalous surface states at interfaces in p-wave superconductors

We present the results of theoretical study of surface state properties in a two-dimensional model for triplet $p$-wave superconductors. We derive boundary conditions for Eilenberger equations at rough interfaces and develop the approach for self-consistent solution for the spatial dependence of $p_{x}$ and $p_{x}+i~p_{y}$ -wave pair potentials. In the $p_{x}$ case we demonstrate the robustness of the zero-energy peak in the density of states (DoS) with respect to surface roughness, in contrast to the suppression of such a peak in the case of $d_{xy}$ symmetry. This effect is due to stability of odd-frequency pairing state at the surface with respect to disorder. In the case of the chiral $p_{x}+i~p_{y}$ state we demonstrate the appearance of a complex multi-peak subgap structure in the spectrum with increasing surface roughness.

Nonlocal Andreev reflection, fractional charge and current-phase relation in topological bilayer exciton condensate junctions

We study Andreev reflection and Josephson currents in topological bilayer exciton condensates (TEC). These systems can create 100% spin entangled nonlocal currents with high amplitudes due to perfect nonlocal Andreev reflection. This Andreev reflection process can be gate tuned from a regime of purely retro reflection to purely specular reflection. We have studied the bound states in TEC-TI-TEC Josephson junctions and find a gapless dispersion for perpendicular incidence. The presence of a sharp transition in the supercurrent-phase relationship when the system is in equilibrium is a signature of fractional charge, which can be further revealed in ac measurements faster than relaxation processes via Landau-Zener processes.

Josephson supercurrent in a topological insulator without a bulk shunt

A Josephson supercurrent has been induced into the three-dimensional topological insulator Bi1.5Sb0.5Te1.7Se1.3. We show that the transport in Bi1.5Sb0.5Te1.7Se1.3 exfoliated flakes is dominated by surface states and that the bulk conductivity can be neglected at the temperatures where we study the proximity induced superconductivity. We prepared Josephson junctions with widths in the order of 40 nm and lengths in the order of 50 to 80 nm on several Bi1.5Sb0.5Te1.7Se1.3 flakes and measured down to 30 mK. The Fraunhofer patterns unequivocally reveal that the supercurrent is a Josephson supercurrent. The measured critical currents are reproducibly observed on different devices and upon multiple cooldowns, and the critical current dependence on temperature as well as magnetic field can be well explained by diffusive transport models and geometric effects.

Conductance spectroscopy in ferromanget/superconductor hybrids

We present theoretical model for the proximity effect in F-SFF-F structures (F is ferromagnet, S is superconductor) with non-collinear magnetizations vectors in the F-layers and with arbitrary magnitudes of exchange fields. Electrical conductance of these structures is analyzed within the Keldysh-Usadel formalism in the diffusive regime as a function of a misorientation angle between magnetizations of the F-layers and transparencies of SF and FF interfaces. We show that long-range triplet superconducting correlations manifest themselves either as a zero-bias peak in the case of perfect transparency of FF interface, or as a two-peak structure in the case of finite transparency. The predicted features may serve as a diagnostic tool for characterization of interfaces in superconducting hybrid structures

Theory of supercurrent transport in SIsFS Josephson junctions

We present the results of theoretical study of Current-Phase Relations (CPR) in Josephson junctions of SIsFS type, where 'S' is a bulk superconductor and 'IsF' is a complex weak link consisting of a superconducting film 's', a metallic ferromagnet 'F' and an insulating barrier 'I'. We calculate the relationship between Josephson current and phase difference. At temperatures close to critical, calculations are performed analytically in the frame of the Ginsburg-Landau equations. At low temperatures numerical method is developed to solve selfconsistently the Usadel equations in the structure. We demonstrate that SIsFS junctions have several distinct regimes of supercurrent transport and we examine spatial distributions of the pair potential across the structure in different regimes. We study the crossover between these regimes which is caused by shifting the location of a weak link from the tunnel barrier 'I' to the F-layer. We show that strong deviations of the CPR from sinusoidal shape occur even in a vicinity of Tc, and these deviations are strongest in the crossover regime. We demonstrate the existence of temperature-induced crossover between 0 and pi states in the contact and show that smoothness of this transition strongly depends on the CPR shape.

Theoretical Model of Superconducting Spintronic SIsFS Devices

Motivated by recent progress in development of cryogenic memory compatible with single flux quantum (SFQ) circuits we have performed a theoretical study of magnetic SIsFS Josephson junctions, where 'S' is a bulk superconductor, 's' is a thin superconducting film, 'F' is a metallic ferromagnet and 'I' is an insulator. We calculate the Josephson current as a function of s and F layers thickness, temperature and exchange energy of F film. We outline several modes of operation of these junctions and demonstrate their unique ability to have large product of a critical current $I_{C}$ and a normal-state resistance $R_{N}$ in the $π$ state, comparable to that in SIS tunnel junctions commonly used in SFQ circuits. We develop a model describing switching of the Josephson critical current in these devices by external magnetic field. The results are in good agreement with the experimental data for Nb-Al/AlO${_x}$-Nb-Pd$_{0.99}$Fe$_{0.01}$-Nb junctions.

Andreev bound states and current-phase relations in three-dimensional topological insulators

To guide the search for the Majorana fermion, we theoretically study superconductor/topological/superconductor (S/TI/S) junctions in an experimentally relevant regime. We find that the striking features present in these systems, including the doubled periodicity of the Andreev bound states (ABSs) due to tunneling via Majorana states, can still be present at high electron densities. We show that via the inclusion of magnetic layers, this 4pi periodic ABS can still be observed in three-dimensional topological insulators, where finite angle incidence usually results in the opening of a gap at zero energy and hence results in a 2pi periodic ABS. Furthermore, we study the Josephson junction characteristics and find that the gap size can be controlled and decreased by tuning the magnetization direction and amplitude. These findings pave the way for designing experiments on S/3DTI/S junctions.

Comment on "Unified Formalism of Andreev Reflection at a Ferromagnet/Superconductor Interface" by T.Y. Chen, et al

A recent paper of Chen et al. claims to have derived an allegedly previously unavailable "unified" Andreev Reflection (AR) formalism for an arbitrary spin polarization P that recovers earlier results as its special limits. In this Comment we show that, contrary to this claim, there are numerous works correctly solving the problem formulated in this paper for an arbitrary P, while Chen et al formulas fail to correctly incorporate P \neq 0 effects and violate basic physical principles.
