Nonsinusoidal current-phase relation in SFS Josephson junctions

Various types of the current-phase relation I(phi) in superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor (SFS) point contacts and planar double-barrier junctions are studied within the quasiclassical theory in the limit of thin diffusive ferromagnetic interlayers. The physical mechanisms leading to highly nontrivial I(phi) dependence are identified by studying the spectral supercurrent density. These mechanisms are also responsible for the 0-pi transition in SFS Josephson junctions.

Nonmonotonic critical temperature in superconductor/ferromagnet bilayers

The critical temperature T_c of a superconductor/ferromagnet (SF) bilayer can exhibit nonmonotonic dependence on the thickness d_f of the F layer. SF systems have been studied for a long time; according to the experimental situation, the "dirty" limit is often considered which implies that the mean free path in the layers is the second smallest spatial scale after the Fermi wavelength. However, all calculations reported for the dirty limit were done with some additional assumptions, which can be violated in actual experiments. Therefore, we develop a general method (to be exact, two independent methods) for investigating T_c as a function of the bilayer's parameters in the dirty case. Comparing our theory with experiment, we obtain good agreement. In the general case, we observe three characteristic types of T_c(d_f) behavior: 1) nonmonotonic decay of T_c to a finite value exhibiting a minimum at particular d_f, 2) reentrant behavior, characterized by vanishing of T_c in a certain interval of d_f and finite values otherwise, 3) monotonic decay of T_c and vanishing at finite d_f. Qualitatively, the nonmonotonic behavior of T_c(d_f) is explained by the interference of quasiparticles in the F layer, which can be either constructive or destructive depending on the value of d_f.

Multiband model for tunneling in MgB2 junctions

A theoretical model for quasiparticle and Josephson tunneling in multiband superconductors is developed and applied to MgB2-based junctions. The gap functions in different bands in MgB2 are obtained from an extended Eliashberg formalism, using the results of band structure calculations. The temperature and angle dependencies of MgB2 tunneling spectra and the Josephson critical current are calculated. The conditions for observing one or two gaps are given. We argue that the model may help to settle the current debate concerning two-band superconductivity in MgB2.

Multiband model for penetration depth in MgB2

The results of first principles calculations of the electronic structure and the electron-phonon interaction in MgB2 are used to study theoretically the temperature dependence and anisotropy of the magnetic field penetration depth. The effects of impurity scattering are essential for a proper description of the experimental results. We compare our results with experimental data and we argue that the two-band model describes the data rather well.

Critical current in SFIFS junctions

Quantitative theory of the Josephson effect in SFIFS junctions (S denotes bulk superconductor, F - metallic ferromagnet, I - insulating barrier) is presented in the dirty limit. Fully self-consistent numerical procedure is employed to solve the Usadel equations at arbitrary values of the F-layers thicknesses, magnetizations, and interface parameters. In the case of antiparallel ferromagnets' magnetizations the effect of the critical current enhancement by the exchange field is observed, while in the case of parallel magnetizations the junction exhibits the transition to the pi-state. In the limit of thin F layers, we study these peculiarities of the critical current analytically and explain them qualitatively; the scenario of the 0-pi transition in our case differs from those studied before. The effect of switching between 0 and pi states by changing the F-layers' mutual orientation is demonstrated.

Two-gap superconductivity in MgB$_{2}$: clean or dirty?

A large number of experimental facts and theoretical arguments favor a two-gap model for superconductivity in MgB$_{2}$. However, this model predicts strong suppression of the critical temperature by interband impurity scattering and, presumably, a strong correlation between the critical temperature and the residual resistivity. No such correlation has been observed. We argue that this fact can be understood if the band disparity of the electronic structure is taken into account, not only in the superconducting state, but also in normal transport.

Specific heat of MgB$_2$ in a one- and a two-band model from first-principles calculations

The heat capacity anomaly at the transition to superconductivity of the layered superconductor MgB$_2$ is compared to first-principles calculations with the Coulomb repulsion, $μ^\ast$, as the only parameter which is fixed to give the measured $T_c$. We solve the Eliashberg equations for both an isotropic one-band and a two-band model with different superconducting gaps on the $π$ and $σ$ Fermi surfaces. The agreement with experiments is considerably better for the two-band model than for the one-band model.

Critical temperature of superconductor/ferromagnet bilayers

Superconductor/ferromagnet bilayers are known to exhibit nontrivial dependence of the critical temperature T_c on the thickness d_f of the ferromagnetic layer. We develop a general method for investigation of T_c as a function of the bilayer's parameters. It is shown that interference of quasiparticles makes T_c(d_f) a nonmonotonic function. The results are in good agreement with experiment. Our method also applies to multilayered structures.

Superconducting thin films of MgB2 on (001)-Si by pulsed laser deposition

Superconducting thin films have been prepared on Si-substrates, using pulsed laser deposition from a target composed of a mixture of Mg and MgB2 powders. The films were deposited at room temperature and post-annealed at 600 degrees C. The zero resistance transition temperatures were 12 K, with an onset transition temperature of 27 K. Special care has been taken to avoid oxidation of Mg in the laser plasma and deposited film, by optimizing the background pressure of Ar gas in the deposition chamber. For this the optical emission in the visible range from the plasma has been used as indicator. Preventing Mg from oxidation was found to be essential to obtain superconducting films.

Depairing currents in the superconductor/ferromagnet proximity system Nb/Fe

We have investigated the behaviour of the depairing current J_{dp} in ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet (F/S/F) trilayers as function of the thickness d_s of the superconducting layers. Theoretically, J_{dp} depends on the superconducting order parameter or the pair density function, which is not homogeneous across the film due to the proximity effect. We use a proximity effect model with two parameters (proximity strength and interface transparency), which can also describe the dependence of the superconducting transition temperature T_c on d_s. We compare the computations with the experimentally determined zero-field critical current J_{c0} of small strips (typically 5~ μm wide) of Fe/Nb/Fe trilayers with varying thickness d_{Nb} of the Nb layer. Near T_c the temperature dependence J_{c0}(T) is in good agreement with the expected behaviour, which allows extrapolation to T = 0. Both the absolute values of J_{c0}(0) and the dependence on d_{Nb} agree with the expectations for the depairing current. We conclude that J_{dp} is correctly determined, notwithstanding the fact that the strip width is larger than both the superconducting penetration depth and the superconducting coherence length, and that J_{dp}(d_s) is correctly described by the model.

Probing Spin Polarization with Andreev Reflection: A Theoretical Basis

Andreev reflection at the interface between a ferromagnet and a superconductor has become a foundation of a versatile new technique of measuring the spin polarization of magnetic materials. In this paper we will briefly outline a general theory of Andreev reflection for spin-polarized systems and arbitrary Fermi surface in two limiting cases of ballistic and diffusive transport

Andreev reflection in layered structures: implications for high T_c grain boundary Josephson junctions

Andreev reflection is investigated in layered anisotropic normal metal / superconductor (N/S) systems in the case of an energy gap Δin S not negligible with respect to the Fermi energy E_F, as it probably occurs with high critical temperature superconductors (HTS). We find that in these limits retro-reflectivity, which is a fundamental feature of Andreev reflection, is broken modifying sensitively transport across S/N interfaces. We discuss the consequences for supercurrents in HTS Josephson junctions and for the midgap states in S-N contacts

Coupling of two superconductors through a ferromagnet : evidence for a pi-junction

We report measurements of the temperature dependence of the critical current in Josephson junctions consisting of conventional superconducting banks of Nb and a weakly ferromagnetic interlayer of a Cu$_x$Ni$_{1-x}$ alloy, with $x$ around 0.5. With decreasing temperature $I_c$ generally increases, but for specific thicknesses of the ferromagnetic interlayer, a maximum is found followed by a strong decrease down to zero, after which $I_c$ rises again. Such a sharp cusp can only be explained by assuming that the junction changes from a 0-phase state at high temperatures to a $π$-phase state at low temperatures.

Mesoscopic proximity effect probed through superconducting contacts

We investigate the properties of complex mesoscopic superconducting-normal hybrid devices, Andreev-Interferometers in the case, where the current is proped through a superconducting tunneling contact whereas the proximity effect is generated by a transparent SN-interface. We show within the quasiclassical Green's functions technique, how the fundamental SNIS-element of the such structures can be mapped onto an effective S$^\prime$IS-junction, where S$^\prime$ is the proximised material with an effective energy gap $E_g<Δ$. We propose the Andreev-Interferometer, where $E_g$ can be tuned by an external phase $ϕ$ and displays maxima at 0 mod $2π$ and minima at $π$ mod $2π$. This leads to peculiar current-phase-relations We propose an experiment to verify our predictions and show, how our results are consistent with recent, unexplained experimental results.

Coherent effects in double-barrier Josephson junctions

The general solution for ballistic electronic transport through double-barrier Josephson junctions is derived. We show the existence of a regime of phase-coherent transport in which the supercurrent is proportional to the single barrier transparency and the way in which this coherence is destroyed for increasing interlayer thickness. The quasiparticle dc current at arbitrary voltage is determined.

Interface resistance in ferromagnet/superconductor junctions

Results of theoretical study of spin-polarized tunneling in ferromagnet/superconductor junctions are presented. Spin and charge currents are calculated as a function of applied voltage and spin polarization in a ferromagnet. The model takes into account the splitting of different spin subbands in a ferromagnet and impurity scattering in the contact. The excess resistance of an FS contact due to the charge-imbalance in a superconductor is calculated for the first time. The results have implications for spin-coupled magnetoresistance in ferromagnet/superconductor contacts and for measuring spin polarization in ferromagnets.

Surface electronic scattering in d-wave superconductors

Theoretical model of a rough surface in a d-wave superconductor is studied for the general case of arbitrary strength of electron scattering by an impurity layer covering the surface. Boundary conditions for quasiclassical Eilenberger equations are derived at the interface between the impurity layer and the d-wave superconductor. The model is applied to the selfconsisrent calculation of the surface density of states and the critical current in d-wave Josephson junctions

Anomalous proximity effect in d-wave superconductors

The anomalous proximity effect between a d-wave superconductor and a surface layer with small electronic mean free path is studied theoretically in the framework of the Eilenberger equations. The angular and spatial structure of the pair potential and the quasiclassical propagators in the interface region is calculated selfconsistently. The variation of the spatially-resolved quasiparticle density of states from the bulk to the surface is studied. It is shown that the isotropic gapless superconducting state is induced in the disordered layer.
