Influence of magnetic impurities on charge transport in diffusive-normal-metal / superconductor junctions

Charge transport in the diffusive normal metal (DN) / insulator / $s$- and $% d $-wave superconductor junctions is studied in the presence of magnetic impurities in DN in the framework of the quasiclassical Usadel equations with the generalized boundary conditions. The cases of $s$- and d-wave superconducting electrodes are considered. The junction conductance is calculated as a function of a bias voltage for various parameters of the DN metal: resistivity, Thouless energy, the magnetic impurity scattering rate and the transparency of the insulating barrier between DN and a superconductor. It is shown that the proximity effect is suppressed by magnetic impurity scattering in DN for any value of the barrier transparency. In low-transparent s-wave junctions this leads to the suppression of the normalized zero-bias conductance. In contrast to that, in high transparent junctions zero-bias conductance is enhanced by magnetic impurity scattering. The physical origin of this effect is discussed. For the d-wave junctions, the dependence on the misorientation angle $α$ between the interface normal and the crystal axis of a superconductor is studied. The zero-bias conductance peak is suppressed by the magnetic impurity scattering only for low transparent junctions with $α\sim 0$. In other cases the conductance of the d-wave junctions does not depend on the magnetic impurity scattering due to strong suppression of the proximity effect by the midgap Andreev resonant states.

Critical temperature of superconducting bilayers: theory and experiment

A generalized model for the critical temperature Tc of superconducting bilayers is presented, which is valid with no restrictions to film thicknesses, Tc of the layers and interface resistivity. The model is verified experimentally on a series of Nb-Al and Ta-Al bilayers with Nb, Ta layer thicknesses of 100 nm and Al layer thicknesses ranging from 5 nm to 200 nm. Excellent agreement between theory and experiment was found for the energy gap and the Tc of bilayers. The results are important for designing practical superconducting devices.

Energy-dependent kinetic model of photon absorption by superconducting tunnel junctions

We describe a model for photon absorption by superconducting tunnel junctions in which the full energy dependence of all the quasiparticle dynamic processes is included. The model supersedes the well-known Rothwarf-Taylor approach, which becomes inadequate for a description of the small gap structures that are currently being developed for improved detector resolution and responsivity. In these junctions relaxation of excited quasiparticles is intrinsically slow so that the energy distribution remains very broad throughout the whole detection process. By solving the energy-dependent kinetic equations describing the distributions, we are able to model the temporal and spectral evolution of the distribution of quasiparticles initially generated in the photo-absorption process. Good agreement is obtained between the theory and experiment.

Andreev reflection and enhanced subgap conductance in NbN/Au/InGaAs-InP junctions

We report on the fabrication of highly transparent superconductor/normal metal/two-dimensional electron gas junctions formed by a superconducting NbN electrode, a thin (10nm) Au interlayer, and a two-dimensional electron gas in a InGaAs/InP heterostructure. High junction transparency has been achieved by exploiting of a newly developed process of Au/NbN evaporation and rapid annealing at 400C. This allowed us to observe for the first time a decrease in the differential resistance with pronounced double-dip structure within the superconducting energy gap in superconductor-2DEG proximity systems. The effect of a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the 2DEG on the differential resistance of the interface was studied. It has been found that the reduced subgap resistance remains in high magnetic fields. Zero-field data are analyzed within the previously established quasiclassical model for the proximity effect.

Theory of charge transport in diffusive normal metal / unconventional singlet superconductor contacts

We analyze the transport properties of contacts between unconventional superconductor and normal diffusive metal in the framework of the extended circuit theory. We obtain a general boundary condition for the Keldysh-Nambu Green's functions at the interface that is valid for arbitrary transparencies of the interface. This allows us to investigate the voltage-dependent conductance (conductance spectrum) of a diffusive normal metal (DN)/ unconventional singlet superconductor junction in both ballistic and diffusive cases. For d-wave superconductor, we calculate conductance spectra numerically for different orientations of the junctions, resistances, Thouless energies in DN, and transparencies of the interface. We demonstrate that conductance spectra exhibit a variety of features including a $V$-shaped gap-like structure, zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) and zero bias conductance dip (ZBCD). We show that two distinct mechanisms: (i) coherent Andreev reflection (CAR) in DN and (ii) formation of midgap Andreev bound state (MABS) at the interface of d-wave superconductors, are responsible for ZBCP, their relative importance being dependent on the angle $α$ between the interface normal and the crystal axis of d-wave superconductors. For $α=0$, the ZBCP is due to CAR in the junctions of low transparency with small Thouless energies, this is similar to the case of diffusive normal metal / insulator /s-wave superconductor junctions. With increase of $α$ from zero to $π/4$, the MABS contribution to ZBCP becomes more prominent and the effect of CAR is gradually suppressed. Such complex spectral features shall be observable in conductance spectra of realistic high-$T_c$ junctions at very low temperature.

The proximity effect in normal metal - multiband superconductor hybrid structures

A theory of the proximity effect in normal metal - multiband superconductor hybrid structures is formulated within the quasiclassical Green's function formalism. It is shown that the existence of multiple superconducting bands manifests itself as the occurence of additional peaks in the density of states in the structure. The interplay between the proximity effect and the interband coupling influences the magnitudes of the gaps in a superconductor in a non-trivial way. The developed theory is applied to the calculation of supercurrent in multiband Superconductor - Normal metal - Superconductor Josephson junctions with low-transparent interfaces, and the results are compared with the predictions for multiband tunnel junctions.

Why magnesium diboride is not described by anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau theory

It is well established that the superconductivity in the recently discovered superconducting compound MgB$_{2}$ resides in the quasi-two-dimensional band ($σ$-band) and three-dimensional band ($π$-band). We demonstrate that, due to such band structure, the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau theory practically does not have region of applicability, because gradient expansion in the $c$ direction breaks down. In the case of dirty $π$-band we derive the simplest equations which describe properties of such superconductors near $T_{c}$ and explore some consequences of these equations.

Self-energy Effect of Superconducting Energy Gap in Point-Contact Spectra of MgB$_2$

In strong-coupling superconductors with a short electron mean free path the self-energy effects in the superconducting order parameter play a major role in the phonon manifestation of the point-contact spectra at the above-gap energies. We derive asymptotic expressions of the phonon structure in MgB$%_{2}$ in the case $eV\ggΔ$ for tunnel, ballistic, and diffusive point-contacts and show that these expressions not only qualitatively, but also semi-quantitatively correspond to the measurements of the phonon structure in the point-contact spectra for the $π$-band of MgB$_{2}$ c-axis oriented thin films.

Microscopic nonequilibrium theory of double-barrier Josephson junctions

We study nonequilibrium charge transport in a double-barrier Josephson junction, including nonstationary phenomena, using the time-dependent quasiclassical Keldysh Green's function formalism. We supplement the kinetic equations by appropriate time-dependent boundary conditions and solve the time-dependent problem in a number of regimes. From the solutions, current-voltage characteristics are derived. It is understood why the quasiparticle current can show excess current as well as deficit current and how the subgap conductance behaves as function of junction parameters. A time-dependent nonequilibrium contribution to the distribution function is found to cause a non-zero averaged supercurrent even in the presence of an applied voltage. Energy relaxation due to inelastic scattering in the interlayer has a prominent role in determining the transport properties of double-barrier junctions. Actual inelastic scattering parameters are derived from experiments. It is shown as an application of the microscopic model, how the nature of the intrinsic shunt in double-barrier junctions can be explained in terms of energy relaxation and the opening of Andreev channels.

Triplet proximity effect in FSF trilayers

We study the critical temperature T_c of FSF trilayers (F is a ferromagnet, S is a singlet superconductor), where the triplet superconducting component is generated at noncollinear magnetizations of the F layers. An exact numerical method is employed to calculate T_c as a function of the trilayer parameters, in particular, mutual orientation of magnetizations. Analytically, we consider limiting cases. Our results determine conditions which are necessary for existence of recently investigated odd triplet superconductivity in SF multilayers.

Theory of charge transport in diffusive normal metal / conventional superconductor point contacts

Tunneling conductance in diffusive normal metal / insulator / s-wave superconductor (DN/I/S) junctions is calculated for various situations by changing the magnitudes of the resistance and Thouless energy in DN and the transparency of the insulating barrier. The generalized boundary condition introduced by Yu. Nazarov [Superlattices and Microstructures 25 1221 (1999)] is applied, where the ballistic theory by Blonder Tinkham and Klapwijk (BTK) and the diffusive theory by Volkov Zaitsev and Klapwijk based on the boundary condition of Kupriyanov and Lukichev (KL) are naturally reproduced. It is shown that the proximity effect can enhance (reduce) the tunneling conductance for junctions with a low (high) transparency. A wide variety of dependencies of tunneling conductance on voltage bias is demonstrated including a $U$-shaped gap like structure, a zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) and a zero bias conductance dip (ZBCD).

The determination of the electron-phonon interaction from tunneling data in the two-band superconductor MgB2

We calculate the tunneling density of states (DOS) of MgB2 for different tunneling directions, by directly solving the real-axis, two-band Eliashberg equations (EE). Then we show that the numeric inversion of the standard single-band EE, if applied to the DOS of the two-band superconductor MgB2, may lead to wrong estimates of the strength of certain phonon branches (e.g. the E_2g) in the extracted electron-phonon spectral function alpha^(2)F(omega). The fine structures produced by the two-band interaction turn out to be clearly observable only for tunneling along the ab planes in high-quality single crystals. The results are compared to recent experimental data.

Decoherence due to nodal quasiparticles in d-wave qubits

We study the Josephson junction between two d-wave superconductors, which is discussed as an implementation of a qubit. We propose an approach that allows to calculate the decoherence time due to an intrinsic dissipative process: quantum tunneling between the two minima of the double-well potential excites nodal quasiparticles which lead to incoherent damping of quantum oscillations. The decoherence is weakest in the mirror junction, where the contribution of nodal quasiparticles corresponds to the superohmic dissipation and becomes small at small tunnel splitting of the energy level in the double-well potential. For available experimental data, we estimate the quality factor.

Comment on "First-principles calculation of the superconducting transition in MgB2 within the anisotropic Eliashberg formalism"

Choi et al. [Phys. Rev. B 66, 020513 (2002)] recently presented first principles calculations of the electron-phonon coupling and superconductivity in MgB2, emphasizing the importance of anisotropy and anharmonicity. We point out that (1) variation of the superconducting gap inside the sigma- or the pi-bands can hardly be observed in real samples, and (2) taking the anisotropy of the Coulomb repulsion into account influences the size of the small gap, Delta_pi.

Upper critical field in dirty two-band superconductors: breakdown of the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau theory

We investigate the upper critical field in a dirty two-band superconductor within quasiclassical Usadel equations. The regime of very high anisotropy in the quasi-2D band, relevant for MgB$_{2}$, is considered. We show that strong disparities in pairing interactions and diffusion constant anisotropies for two bands influence the in-plane $H_{c2}$ in a different way at high and low temperatures. This causes temperature-dependent $H_{c2}$ anisotropy, in accordance with recent experimental data in MgB$_{2}$. The three-dimensional band most strongly influences the in-plane $H_{c2}$ near $T_{c}$, in the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) region. However, due to a very large difference between the c-axis coherence lengths in the two bands, the GL theory is applicable only in an extremely narrow temperature range near $T_c$. The angular dependence of $H_{c2}$ deviates from a simple effective-mass law even near $T_c$.

Can one extract the electron-phonon-interaction from tunneling data in case of the multigap superconductor MgB$_2$?

In the present work we calculate the tunneling density of states (DOS) of MgB% $_{2}$ for different tunneling directions by directly solving the two-band Eliashberg equations (EE) in the real-axis formulation. This procedure reveals the fine structures of the DOS due to the optical phonons. Then we show that the numeric inversion of the standard \emph{single-band} EE (the only available method), when applied to the \emph{two-band} DOS of MgB$_{2}$, may lead to wrong estimates of the strength of certain phonon branches (e.g. the $E_{2g}$) in the extracted electron-phonon spectral function $α^{2}F(ω)$. The fine structures produced by the two-band interaction at energies between 20 and 100 meV turn out to be clearly observable only for tunneling along the $ab$ planes, when the extracted $α^{2}F(ω)$ contains the combination $α^{2}F_{σσ}(ω)$\textbf{+}$α^{2}F_{σπ}(ω)$, together with a minor $α^{2}F_{ππ}(ω)$\textbf{+}$α^{2}F_{πσ} (ω)$ component. Only in this case it is possible to extract information on the $σ$-band contribution to the spectral functions. For any other tunneling direction, the $π$-band contribution (which does not determine the superconducting properties of MgB$_{2}$) is dominant and almost coincides with the whole $α^2F(ω)$ for tunneling along the c axis. Our results are compared with recent experimental tunneling and point-contact data.

Mixed state of a dirty two-band superconductor: application to MgB_2

We investigate the vortex state in a two-band superconductor with strong intraband and weak interband electronic scattering rates. Coupled Usadel equations are solved numerically and the distributions of the pair potentials and local densities of states are calculated for two bands at different values of magnetic fields. The existence of two distinct length scales corresponding to different bands is demonstrated. The results provide qualitative interpretation of recent STM experiments on vortex structure imaging in MgB_2.
