Current - voltage characteristics in magnetic field for layered superconductor with intrinsic pinning of Josephson vortices

The results of measurements of the transverse voltage in the Hall configuration, Uy, under conditions of motion of the charge and vortex subsystems in orhtogonal magnetic and electric fields on epitaxial films of the layered high-temperature superconductor Nd2-xCexCuO4 are presented. the motion of Josephson vortices across CuO2 layers (along the c-axis) is analyzed considering the effects of intrinsic pinning. An exponential dependence of critical depinning current jc(B) for Josephson vortices is established in contrast to the power law dependences for Abrikosov vortices. With increasing external magnetic field after the depinning by a magnetic field at B=Bc, the onset of the vortex creep regime, which evolves into the flux-flow regime at crossover field B=Bf, is observed.

Giant Atmospheric Showers Detected by the Yakutsk Extensive Air Shower Array

The two most powerful extensive air showers (EAS) with energies of about $10^{20}$ eV, registered at the Yakutsk EAS array during the entire observation period of 1974-2024, are considered. Both showers hit the array near the center and triggered all surface detectors and underground muon detectors with a threshold energy of $E_μ = 1.0 \times \cos θ$ GeV. These events have an abnormally high fraction of muons, which is beyond current model predictions. This may change our understanding of hadron interactions at ultra-high energy, but there is also a possibility that these showers were initiated by some exotic primary particles.

Josephson vortex system in a flux-flow regime in electron doped high-Tc superconductor Nd(2-x)CexCuO4

For an epitaxial film of an electron-doped superconductor Nd(2-x)CexCuO4 (x=0.145), in a mixed state, a well-defined step structure is observed on the dependence of the c-axis flux-flow resistance on the magnetic field parralel to CuO2 layers. It is shown that in the region of a free flow of Josephson vortices, the structure is periodic with a period of deltaB~Phi0/(lambdaablambdac). It is essential that the magnetic penetration depths in the ab-plane (lambdaab) and along the c-axis (lambdac) determine the sizes of the Josephson vortices in the Lawrence-Doniach model for an anisotropic layered superconductor.

Intrinsic Josephson junction characteristics of Nd2-xCexCuO4/SrTiO3 epitaxial films

The current-voltage (I-V) properties along the c axis on Nd2-xCexCuO4 /SrTiO3 epitaxial films with x = 0.145, 0.15 were investigated. For all the samples it has been established that the I-V characteristics exhibit several resistive branches, which correspond to the resistive states of individual Josephson junctions. The results confirm the idea of a tunneling mechanism between the CuO2 layers (superconductor - insulator - superconductor junction) for the investigated Nd2-xCexCuO4 compound. The I-V dependence of this compound with x = 0.15 points out on the nonmonotonic nature of the d-wave or anisotropic s-wave symmetry order parameter associated with the coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetic fluctuations.

Measuring temporal characteristics of the Cherenkov radiation signal from extensive air showers of cosmic rays with a wide field-of-view telescope addendum to the Yakutsk array

A wide field-of-view Cherenkov telescope has been working in the surroundings of the Yakutsk array experiment since 2012. Its main function is to measure the waveform of the Cherenkov radiation signal induced by extensive air showers of cosmic rays. Analysis of the dataset collected by telescope is intended for the reconstruction of the parameters of the development of the shower in addition to the main shower characteristics measured by the rest of the array detectors. In this paper, the observed duration of the Cherenkov radiation signal as a function of the shower core distance is used to estimate the depth of the shower maximum in a different way, based on the results of model simulations.

Status of the Yakutsk air shower array and future plans

The Yakutsk Extensive Air Shower Array has been continuously operating for more than 50 years (since 1970) and up until recently it has been one of world's largest ground-based instruments aimed at studying the properties of cosmic rays in the ultra-high energy domain. In this report we discuss results recently obtained at the array - on cosmic rays energy spectrum, mass composition and directional anisotropy - and how they fit into the world data. Special attention is paid to the measurements of muonic component of extensive air showers. Theoretical results of particle acceleration at shocks are also briefly reviewed. Future scientific and engineering plans on the array modernization are discussed.

Vortex motion in tilted magnetic fields in highly layered electron-doped superconductor Nd2-xCexCuO4

The carrier transport and the motion of a vortex system in a mixed state of an electron-doped high-temperature superconductors Nd2-xCexCuO4 were investigated. To study the anisotropy of galvanomagnetic effects of highly layered NdCeCuO system we have synthesized Nd2-xCexCuO4/SrTiO3 epitaxial films with non-standart orientations of the c-axis and conductive CuO2 layers relative to the substrate. The variation ofe the angle of inclination of the magnetic field B, relative to the current J, reveals that the behavior of both the in-plane r_xx(B) and the out-plane r_xy(B) resistivities in the mixed state is mainly determined by the perpendicular to J component of B, that indicates the crucial role of the Lorentz force F_L~[JxB] and defines the motion of Josephson vortices across the CuO2 layers.

Lateral vortex motion in highly layered electron-doped superconductor Nd2-xCexCuO4

The carrier transport and the motion of a vortex system in the electron-doped high-temperature superconductors Nd2-xCexCuO4 in underdoped and optimally doped (x = 0135, 0.145, 0.15) regions, in the area of the evolution from antiferromagnetic to superconducting order were investigated. To study the anisotropy of the transport properties of highly layered NdCeCuO system we have synthesized Nd2-xCexCuO4/SrTiO3 epitaxial films of three types with different orientations of the c-axis and conductive CuO2 layers relative to the substrate. Such a set of samples allowed us to study the processes of both standard (in the CuO2 layers) and lateral (across the CuO2 layers) carrier transfer in the normal and the mixed states of a superconductor. In a flux-flow regime, in magnetic field B, the dynamics of Abrikosov (B||c-axis) and Josephson (B||ab-plane) vortices are thoroughly investigated and analyzed which is perspective for scientific purposes and for practical applications in measurement technology.

Reconstruction of Cherenkov radiation signals from extensive air showers of cosmic rays using data of a wide field-of-view telescope

The operation of a wide field-of-view (WFOV) Cherenkov telescope is described. The detection of extensive air showers (EAS) of cosmic rays (CR) is based upon the coincidence with signals from the Yakutsk array. The data acquisition system of the telescope yields signals connected with EAS development parameters: presumably, shower age and position of shower maximum in the atmosphere. Here we describe the method of signal processing used to reconstruct Cherenkov radiation signals induced by CR showers. An analysis of signal parameters results in the confirmation of the known correlation of the duration of the Cherenkov radiation signal with the distance to the shower core. The measured core distance dependence is used to set an upper limit to the dimensions of the area along the EAS axis where the Cherenkov radiation intensity is above half-peak amplitude.

Anisotropic temperature dependence of normal state resistivity in underdoped region of a layered electron-doped superconductor Nd2-xCexCuO4

The aim of this work is to investigate the temperature dependencies both in CuO2-plane and out-of plane resistivities in electron-doped Nd2-xCexCuO4 for x from 0.135 up to 0.15 in order to analyze the anisotropy of the electrical transport in the process of the evolution from antiferromagnetic (AF) order in underdoped region to superconducting (SC) order in optimally doped region.

Zenith angle distribution of cosmic ray showers measured with the Yakutsk array and its application to analysis of arrival directions in equatorial coordinates

The Yakutsk array dataset in the energy interval $(10^{17},10^{19})$ eV is revisited in order to interpret the zenith angle distribution of an extensive air shower event rate of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. The close relation of the distribution to the attenuation of the main measurable parameter of showers, $S_{600}$, is examined. Measured and expected distributions are used to analyze the arrival directions of cosmic rays on an equatorial map including the energy range below $10^{18}$ eV, which was previously avoided due to the reduced trigger efficiency of the array in the range. While the null hypothesis cannot be rejected with data from the Yakutsk array, an upper limit on the fraction of cosmic rays from a separable source in the uniform background is derived as a function of declination and energy.

Two components of critical current in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ films

Combined action of weak and strong pinning centers on the vortex lattice complicates magnetic behavior of a superconductor since temperature and magnetic field differently affect weak and strong pinning. In this paper we show that contributions of weak and strong pinning into magnetization of the layered superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ can be separated and analyzed individually. We performed a careful analysis of temperature behavior of the relaxed superconducting current $J$ in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ films which revealed two components of the current $J = J_1 +J_2$. A simple method of separation of the components and their temperature dependence in low magnetic fields are discussed. We found that $J_1$ is produced by weak collective pinning on the oxygen vacancies in CuO$_2$ planes while $J_2$ is caused by strong pinning on the Y$_2$O$_3$ precipitates. $J_1$ component weakly changes with field and quasi-exponentially decays with temperature, disappearing at $T \simeq 30$--40~K. Rapid relaxation of $J_1$ causes formation of the normalized relaxation rate peak at $T \simeq 20$~K. $J_2$ component is suppressed by field as $J_2\propto B^{-0.54}$ and decays with temperature following to the power law $J_2\propto(1 - T/T_\mathrm{dp} )^α$ where $T_\mathrm{dp}$ is the depinning temperature. Detailed comparison of the experimental data with pinning theories is presented.

The mixed-state Hall conductivity of single-crystal films $Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4+δ}$ (x=0.14)

The magnetic-field dependencies of the longitudinal and Hall resistivity of the electron-doped compounds $Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4+δ}$ in underdoped region (x=0.14) were investigated. It was established experimentally a strong magnetic field dependence of the Hall conductivity, $σ_{xy}(B)=C-b/B$, in the region of magnetic fields corresponding to a transition from superconducting to resistive state. The observed feature can be explained with the sum of contributions of the quasiparticles and moving Abrikosov vortices into Hall effect in a mixed state of type-II superconductor.

NdCeCuO - NdCeO boundary and resistive switchings in mesoscopic structures on base of epitaxial NdCeCuO films

Reverse and stable bipolar resistive switching effect was observed in planar NdCeCuO - NdCeO - Ag heterostructures. It was shown that the current voltage charactereriscs of the BRSE observed has a diode character. Simulations were used to consider the influence of the nonuniform distribution of an electric field at the interface of a heterojunction on the effect of bipolar resistive switching in investigated structures. The inhomogeneous distribution of the electric field near the contact edge creates regions of higher electric field strength which, in turn, stimulates motion and redistribution of defects, changes of the resistive properties of the whole structure and formation of a percolation channel.

A characterisation of weakly locally projective amalgams related to $A_{16}$ and the sporadic simple groups $M_{24}$ and $He$

A simple undirected graph is weakly $G$-locally projective, for a group of automorphisms $G$, if for each vertex $x$, the stabiliser $G(x)$ induces on the set of vertices adjacent to $x$ a doubly transitive action with socle the projective group $L_{n_x}(q_x)$ for an integer $n_x$ and a prime power $q_x$. It is $G$-locally projective if in addition $G$ is vertex transitive. A theorem of Trofimov reduces the classification of the $G$-locally projective graphs to the case where the distance factors are as in one of the known examples. Although an analogue of Trofimov's result is not yet available for weakly locally projective graphs, we would like to begin a program of characterising some of the remarkable examples. We show that if a graph is weakly locally projective with each $q_x =2$ and $n_x = 2$ or $3$, and if the distance factors are as in the examples arising from the rank 3 tilde geometries of the groups $M_{24}$ and $He$, then up to isomorphism there are exactly two possible amalgams. Moreover, we consider an infinite family of amalgams of type $\mathcal{U}_n$ (where each $q_x=2$ and $n=n_x+1\geq 4$) and prove that if $n\geq 5$ there is a unique amalgam of type $\mathcal{U}_n$ and it is unfaithful, whereas if $n=4$ then there are exactly four amalgams of type $\mathcal{U}_4$, precisely two of which are faithful, namely the ones related to $M_{24}$ and $He$, and one other which has faithful completion $A_{16}$.

Testing for uniformity of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray arrival directions

Arrival directions of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) exhibit mainly an isotropic distribution with some small deviations in particular energy bins. In this paper, the Yakutsk array data are tested for circular uniformity of arrival directions in right ascension using 2 methods appropriate for the energy ranges below and above $10^{18}$ eV. No statistically significant deviation from uniformity is found in the arrival directions of cosmic rays (CRs) detected within the observation period 1974--2000.

Resistivity tensor correlations in the mixed state of electron-doped superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4+δ}$

The magnetic-field dependencies of the longitudinal and Hall resistance of the electron-doped compounds Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4+δ}$ in underdoped region with $x$=0.14 and with varying degrees of disorder ($δ$) were investigated. It was established experimentally that the correlation between the longitudinal electrical resistivity and the Hall resistivity can be analyzed on the basis of scaling relationships: $ρ_{xy}$($B$)$\sim$ $ρ^β_{xx}$($B$). For the totality of the investigated single-crystal films of Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4+δ}$/SrTiO$_3$ the universal value $β$=1.5 $\pm$0.4 is found. The observed feature in the electron-doped two-dimensional systems can be associated both with a displaying of anisotropic $s$ - wave or $d$-wave pairing symmetry and with a rather strong pinning due to an essential degree of disorder in the samples under study.
