Photon trap for neutralization of negative ion beams

For effectively neutralization of the powerful negative ions beams of hydrogen and deuterium the photon target is considered in long time. The attractiveness of the traditional approach (Fabry-Perot resonators) to their creation is limited to a number of stringent technical requirements and large economic costs. In this paper we propose a new concept of non-resonant photon trap (storage) for creation more technologically simple optical neutralizers.

A minimal width of the arrival direction distribution of ultra-high energy cosmic rays detected with the Yakutsk array

This paper presents the results of searches for anisotropy in arrival directions of ultra-high energy cosmic rays detected with the Yakutsk Array during the 1974--2008 observational period together with available data from other giant extensive air shower arrays working at present. A method of analysis based on a comparison of the minimal width of distributions in equatorial coordinates is applied. As a result, a hypothesis of isotropy in arrival directions is rejected at the $99.5\%$ significance level. The observed decrease in the minimal width of distribution can be explained by the presence of cosmic ray sources in energy intervals and sky regions according to the recent indications inferred from data of the Yakutsk Array and Telescope Array experiments.

Wide field-of-view Cherenkov telescope for the detection of cosmic rays in coincidence with the Yakutsk extensive air shower array

The Yakutsk array group is developing a wide field-of-view Cherenkov telescope to be operated in coincidence with the surface detectors of the extensive air shower array. Currently, the engineering prototype of the reflecting telescope with the front-end electronics is designed, assembled, and tested to demonstrate the feasibility of the conceived instrument. The status and specifications of the prototype telescope are presented, as well as the modernization program of the already existing Cherenkov light detectors subset of the array measuring ultra-high energy cosmic rays.

Doping effect on the evolution of the pairing symmetry in n-type superconductor near antiferromagnetic phase boundary

We present the investigation results of the in-plane \{rho}(T) resistivity tensor at the temperature range 0.4-40 K in magnetic fields up to 90kOe (H||c, J||ab) for electron-doped Nd{2-x}Ce{x}CuO{4+δ} with different degree of disorder near antiferromagnetic - superconducting phase boundary. We have experimentally found that for optimally doped compound both the upper critical field slope and the critical temperature decrease with increasing of the disorder parameter (d-wave pairing) while in the case of the underdoped system the critical temperature remains constant and (dHc2/dT)|Tc increases with increasing of the disorder (s-wave pairing). These features suggest a possible implementation of the complex mixture state as the (s+id)-pairing.

Large-scale distribution of cosmic rays in right ascension as observed by the Yakutsk array at energies above $10^{18}$ eV

We present the results of searches for anisotropy in the right ascension ($RA$) distribution of arrival directions of cosmic rays (CRs) detected with the Yakutsk array during the 1974--2008 observational period in the energy range above $10^{18}$ eV. Two methods of analysis are applied to two sub-samples of the data. Particularly, estimations of the first and second harmonic amplitudes are given, as well as the first harmonic phase in adjacent energy intervals. Analysis of variance demonstrates a significant contraction of the minimal width of the $RA$ distribution in the energy bin $(10^{19},1.78\times10^{19})$ eV with respect to the isotropic distribution, which may be attributed to a possible source of CRs within the interval $RA\in(15^0,45^0)$.

Upper critical field in electron-doped cuprate superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4+δ}$: two-gap model

We present resistivity measurements of the upper critical field (H$_{c2}$) phase diagram as a function of temperature (T) for Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4+δ}$/SrTiO$_3$ single crystal films with different degree of disorder ($δ$) in magnetic fields up to 90 kOe at temperatures down to 0.4 K. The data are well described by a two-band/two-gap model for a superconductor in the dirty limit.

A method to search for correlations of ultra-high energy cosmic ray masses with the large scale structures in the local galaxy density field

One of the main goals of investigations using present and future giant extensive air shower (EAS) arrays is the mass composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). A new approach to the problem is presented, combining analysis of arrival directions with the statistical test of the paired EAS samples. An idea of the method is to search for possible correlations of UHECR masses with their separate sources, for instance, if there are two sources in different areas of the celestial sphere injecting different nuclei, but fluxes are comparable so that arrival directions are isotropic, the aim is to reveal a difference in the mass composition of CR fluxes. The method is based on a non-parametric statistical test -- the Wilcoxon signed-rank routine -- which does not depend on the populations fitting any parameterized distributions. Two particular algorithms are proposed: first, using measurements of the depth of EAS maximum position in the atmosphere; and second, relying on the age variance of air showers initiated by different primary particles. The formulated method is applied to the Yakutsk array data, in order to demonstrate the possibility of searching for a difference in average mass composition of the two UHECR sets, arriving particularly from the supergalactic plane and a complementary region.

Doping effect on the anomalous behavior of the Hall effect in electron-doped superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4+δ}$

Transport properties of Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4+δ}$ single crystal films are investigated in magnetic fields $B$ up to 9T at $T$=(0.4-4.2)K. An analysis of normal state (at $B>B_{c2}$) Hall coefficient $R_H$$^n$ dependence on Ce doping takes us to a conclusion about the existence both of electron-like and hole-like contributions to transport in nominally electron-doped system. In accordance with $R_H$$^n$(x) analysis an anomalous sign reversal of Hall effect in mixed state at $B<B_{c2}$ may be ascribed to a flux-flow regime for two types of carriers with opposite charges.

Enhancement of the Yakutsk array by atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes to study cosmic rays above $10^{15}$ eV

The aim of the Yakutsk array enhancement project is to create an instrument to study the highest-energy galactic cosmic rays (CRs) -- their sources, energy spectrum, and mass composition. Additionally, there will be unique capabilities for investigations in the transition region between galactic and extragalactic components of CRs. Using the well-developed imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope technique adapted to the energy region $E>10^{15}$ eV, we plan to measure the longitudinal structure parameters of the shower, e.g., angular and temporal distributions of the Cherenkov signal related to $X_{max}$ and the mass composition of CRs. The main advantages of the Yakutsk array, such as its multi-component measurements of extensive air showers, and model-independent CR energy estimation based on Cherenkov light measurements, will be inherited by the instrument to be created.

Anomalous behavior of the Hall effect in electron-doped superconductor $Nd_{2-x}$Ce_{x}Cu$O_{4+δ} with nonstoichiometric disorder

Magnetoresistivity and Hall effect measured in magnetic fields up to B=9T (B||c, J||ab) in electron-doped $Nd_{2-x}$Ce_{x}Cu$O_{4+δ} single crystal films with x = 0.14; 0.15; 0.18 and different oxygen content (δ) were studied in a temperature range of 0.4-4.2 K. The resistivity and Hall coefficient behaviors in the mixed state are discussed in the framework of flux-flow model with the inclusion of the back-flow of vortices owing to the pinning forces.

Comparing the energy spectra of ultra-high energy cosmic rays measured with EAS arrays

The energy spectra of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (CRs) measured with giant extensive air shower (EAS) arrays exhibit discrepancies between the flux intensities and/or estimated CR energies exceeding experimental errors. The well-known intensity correction factor due to the dispersion of the measured quantity in the presence of a rapidly falling energy spectrum is insufficient to explain the divergence. Another source of systematic energy determination error is proposed concerning the charged particle density measured with the surface arrays, which arises due to simplifications (namely, the superposition approximation) in nucleus-nucleus interaction description applied to the shower modeling. Making use of the essential correction factors results in congruous CR energy spectra within experimental errors. Residual differences in the energy scales of giant arrays can be attributed to the actual overall accuracy of the EAS detection technique used. CR acceleration and propagation model simulations using the dip and ankle scenarios of the transition from galactic to extragalactic CR components are in agreement with the combined energy spectrum observed with EAS arrays.

Non linear transport properties of an insulating YBCO nano-bridge

We have investigated the transport properties of an insulating sub-micrometric YBa2Cu3O7-d bridge, patterned on a thin film. As expected for a variable-range-hopping insulator, transport is found non linear. The reduced dimension allows for the observation of an individual fluctuator generating random telegraph noise, which dynamics could be explored as a function of the temperature and transport current. Some recordings clearly exhibit three levels fluctuating resistance, with comparable level separation and correlated dynamics, which likely result from the existence of two states or correlated clustered charge traps.

Exploring arrival directions of UHECRs with the Yakutsk array

The data on arrival directions of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) detected with the Yakutsk array are analyzed. The work is induced by the recent claim of the Pierre Auger collaboration for the significant correlation found between UHECRs and positions of nearby Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) on the celestial sphere; and no correlation the HiRes collaboration stands for. Conflicting data of four giant arrays concern possible extragalactic sources of UHECRs and appeal to the profound analysis and to the future data from the Telescope Array/Northern Auger Observatory.

Measuring extensive air showers with Cherenkov light detectors of the Yakutsk array: The energy spectrum of cosmic rays

The energy spectrum of cosmic rays in the range 10^15 eV to 6*10^19 eV has been studied using the air Cherenkov light detectors of the Yakutsk array. The total flux of photons produced by relativistic electrons (including positrons as well, hereafter) of extensive air showers in the atmosphere is used as the energy estimator of the primary particle initiating a shower. The resultant differential flux of cosmic rays exhibits, in accordance with previous measurements, a knee and ankle features at energies 3*10^15 and ~10^19 eV, respectively. A comparison of observational data with simulations is made in the knee and ankle regions in order to choose the models of galactic and extragalactic components of cosmic rays which describe better the energy spectrum measured.

A search for Extragalactic Sources of Ultrahigh-Energy Cosmic Rays

Possible extragalactic sources of cosmic rays at energies above 4*10^{19} eV detected with the Yakutsk array are sought. Correlation of the shower arrival directions with objects from Veron's catalog that are located closer than 100 Mpc from the Earth confirms the observations at the Pierre Auger observatory, as well as the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin effect on ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays. The detailed analysis of the data reveals the classes of objects belonging to the active galactic nuclei that are probable sources of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays.

Average mass composition of primary cosmic rays in the superhigh energy region by Yakutsk complex EAS array data

The characteristics relating to the lateral and longitudinal development of EAS in the energy region of 10^15-10^19eV have been analyzed in the framework of the QGSJET model and of mass composition of primary cosmic rays. It is found that at E(0) >= 5*10^15eV the mean mass composition of primary cosmic rays begins to vary as indicated by a rise of with increasing energy. The maximum value of is observed at E(0) ~ (5-50)*10^16eV. It is confirmed by data of many compact EAS arrays and does not contradict an anomalous diffusion model of cosmic ray propagation in our Galaxy. In the superhigh energy region (>=10^18eV) the value begins to decrease, i.e. the mass composition becomes lighter and consists of protons and nuclei of He and C. It does not contradict our earlier estimations for the mass composition and points to a growing role of the metagalactic component of cosmic rays in the superhigh energy region.

Cosmic ray spectrum by energy scattered by EAS particles in the atmosphere and galactic model

The differential energy spectrum of cosmic rays from Cherenkov radiation measurements in EAS in the energy range of 10^15-10^20eV has been compared with an anomalous diffusion model for the particles in interstellar space having fractal properties (Lagutin et al, 2001). The close association between experimental data and calculated "all particle" spectra in form at E(0) (10^15-10^18)eV is found. In this case, the average mass composition of cosmic rays calculated by five components does not contradict the average mass composition from experimental data which was obtained by several of EAS characteristics in that energy region.

On UHECR energy estimation algorithms based on the measurement of electromagnetic component parameters in EAS

Model calculations are performed of extensive air shower (EAS) component energies using a variety of hadronic interaction parameters. A conversion factor from electromagnetic component energy to the energy of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) and its model and primary mass dependence is studied. It is shown that model dependence of the factor minimizes under the necessary condition of the same maximum position and muon content of simulated showers.
