Semi-classical and boson descriptions of scissors states

A two interacting rotors Hamiltonian is alternatively treated semi-classically and by a Dyson boson expansion method. The linearized equations of motion lead to dispersion equation for the wobbling frequency. One defined a ground band with energies consisting in a rotational part and one half of the vibrational wobbling energy. Adding to each state energy the corresponding wobbling quanta one obtains the first excited band. Phonon amplitudes are used to calculate the reduced probability for the inter-band M1 transitions. The states exhibit a shears character. One points out a chiral symmetry which is broken by the interaction term, leading to a pair of twin chiral bands. Applications are made for $^{156}$Gd. One outlines the ability of the two rotor model to account for the wobbling and chiral motion in nuclei. Although the chosen trial function has not a definite total angular momentum, for two particular ansatz of the pairs $I_p,I_n$ the average value of the total angular momentum approximates, to a certain accuracy, the partial angular momentum $I_p$ In this context, the rotational bands defined throughout this present paper could be labeled by the total I.

Simultaneous description of wobbling and chiral properties in even-odd triaxial nuclei

A particle-triaxial rigid core Hamiltonian is semi-classically treated. The coupling term corresponds to a particle rigidly coupled to the triaxial core, along a direction that does not belong to any principal plane of the inertia ellipsoid. The equations of motion for the angular momentum components provide a sixth-order algebraic equation for one component and subsequently equations for the other two. Linearizing the equations of motion, a dispersion equation for the wobbling frequency is obtained. The equations of motion are also considered in the reduced space of generalized phase space coordinates. Choosing successively the three axes as quantization axis will lead to analytical solutions for the wobbling frequency, respectively. The same analysis is performed for the chirally transformed Hamiltonian. With an illustrative example one identified wobbling states whose frequencies are mirror image to one another. Changing the total angular momentum I, a pair of twin bands emerged. Note that the present formalism conciliates between the two signatures of triaxial nuclei, i.e., they could coexist for a single nucleus.

Parity Partner Bands in $^{163}$Lu: A novel approach for describing the negative parity states from a triaxial super-deformed band

The wobbling spectrum of $^{163}$Lu is described through a novel approach, starting from a triaxial rotor model within a semi-classical picture, and obtaining a new set of equations for all four rotational bands that have wobbling character. Redefining the band structure in the present model is done by adopting the concepts of Signature Partner Bands and Parity Partner Bands. Indeed, describing a wobbling spectrum in an even-odd nucleus through signature and parity quantum numbers is an inedited interpretation of the triaxial super-deformed bands.

New results about the canonical transformation for boson operators

The Bogoliubov transformation for a monopole boson induces an unitary transformation connecting the Fock spaces of initial and correlated boson-s. Here we provide a very simple method for deriving the analytical expression for the overlap matrix of the basis states generating the two boson spaces.

A new boson approach for the wobbling motion in even-odd nuclei

A triaxial core rotating around the middle axis, i.e. 2-axis, is cranked around the 1-axis, due to the coupling of an odd proton from a high j orbital. Using the Bargmann representation of a new and complex boson expansion of the angular momentum components, the eigenvalue equation of the model Hamiltonian acquires a Schrödinger form with a fully separated kinetic energy. From a critical angular momentum, the potential energy term exhibits three minima, two of them being degenerate. Spectra of the deepest wells reflects a chiral-like structure. Energies corresponding to the deepest and local minima respectively, are analytically expressed within a harmonic approximation. Based on a classical analysis, a phase diagram is constructed. It is also shown that the transverse wobbling mode is unstable. The wobbling frequencies corresponding to the deepest minimum are used to quantitatively describe the wobbling properties in $^{135}$Pr. Both energies and e.m. transition probabilities are described.

A new approach for the wobbling motion in the even-odd isotopes $^{161,163,165,167}$Lu

A new interpretation for the wobbling bands in the even-odd Lu isotopes is given within a particle-triaxial rotor semi-classical formalism. While in the previous papers the bands TSD1, TSD2, TSD3 and TSD4 are viewed as the ground, one, two and three phonon wobbling bands, here the corresponding experimental results are described as the ground band with spin equal to I=R+j, for R=0,2,4,...(TSD1), the ground band with I=R+j and R=1,3,5,...(TSD2), the one phonon excitations of TSD2 (TSD3), with the odd proton moving in the orbit $j=i_{13/2}$, and the ground band of I=R+j, with R=1,3,5,... and $j=h_{9/2}$ (TSD4). The moments of inertia (MoI) of the core for the first three bands are the same, and considered to be free parameters. Due to the core polarization effect caused by the particle-core coupling, the MoI's for TSD4 are different. The energies and the e.m. transitions are quantitatively well described. Also, the phase diagram of the odd system is drawn. In the parameter space, one indicates where the points associated with the fitted parameters are located, which is the region where the transversal wobbling mode might be possible, as well as where the wobbling motion is forbidden.

Towards a new semi-classical interpretation of the wobbling motion in $^{163}$Lu

A new interpretation for the wobbling bands in $^{163}$Lu is given within a particle-triaxial rotor semi-classical formalism. Wobbling motion in $^{165,167}$Lu within a semi-classical framework

The results obtained for $^{165,167}$Lu with a semi-classical formalism are presented. Properties like excitation energies for the super-deformed bands TSD1, TSD2, TSD3, in $^{165}$Lu, and TSD1 and TSD2 for $^{167}$Lu, inter- and intra-band B(E2) and B(M1), the mixing ratios, transition quadrupole moments are compared either with the corresponding experimental data or with those obtained for $^{163}$Lu. Also alignments, dynamic moments of inertia, relative energy to a reference energy of a rigid symmetric rotor with an effective moment of inertia and the angle between the angular momenta of the core and odd nucleon were quantitatively studied. One concludes that the semi-classical formalism provides a realistic description of all known wobbling features in $^{165, 167}$Lu.

Semiclassical unified description of wobbling motion in even-even and even-odd nuclei

A unitary description for wobbling motion in even-even and even-odd nuclei is presented. In both cases compact formulas for wobbling frequencies are derived. The accuracy of the harmonic approximation is studied for the yrast as well as for the excited bands in the even-even case. Important results for the structure of the wave function and its behavior inside the two wells of the potential energy function corresponding to the Bargmann representation are pointed out. Applications to $^{158}$Er and $^{163}$Lu reveal a very good agreement with available data. Indeed, the yrast energy levels in the even-even case and the first four triaxial super-deformed bands, TSD1,TSD2,TSD3 and TSD4, are realistically described. Also, the results agree with the data for the E2 and M1 intra- as well as inter-band transitions. Perspectives for the formalism development and an extensive application to several nuclei from various regions of the nuclides chart are presented.

Specific features and symmetries for magnetic and chiral bands in nuclei

Magnetic and chiral bands have been a hot subject for more than twenty years. Therefore, quite large volumes of experimental data as well as theoretical descriptions have been accumulated. Although some of the formalisms are not so easy to handle, the results agree impressively well with the data. The objective of this paper is to review the actual status of both experimental and theoretical investigations. Aiming at making this material accessible to a large variety of readers, including young students and researchers, I gave some details on the schematic models which are able to unveil the main features of chirality in nuclei. Also, since most formalisms use a rigid triaxial rotor for the nuclear system's core, I devoted some space to the semi-classical description of the rigid triaxial as well as of the tilted triaxial rotor. In order to answer the question whether the chiral phenomenon is spread over the whole nuclear chart and whether it is specific only to a certain type of nuclei, odd-odd, odd-even or even-even, the current results in the mass regions of $A\sim 60,80,100,130,180,200$ are briefly described for all kinds of odd/even-odd/even systems. The chiral geometry is a sufficient condition for a system of proton-particle, neutron-hole and a triaxial rotor to have the electromagnetic properties of chiral bands. In order to prove that such geometry is not unique for generating magnetic bands with chiral features, I presented a mechanism for a new type of chiral bands. One tries to underline the fact that this rapidly developing field is very successful in pushing forward nuclear structure studies.

Possible chiral symmetry in $^{138}$Nd

The pheomenological Generalized Coherent State Model Hamiltonian is amended with a many body term describing a set of nucleons moving in a shell model mean-field and interacting among themselves with paring, as well as with a particle-core interaction involving a quadrupole-quadrupole and a hexadecapole-hexdecapole force and a spin-spin interaction. The model Hamiltonian is treated in a restricted space consisting of the core projected states associated to the bands ground, $β, γ,\widetildeγ, 1^+$ and $\widetilde{1^+}$ and two proton aligned quasiparticles coupled to the states of the ground band. The chirally transformed particle-core states are also included. The Hamiltonian contains two terms which are not invariant to the chiral transformations relating the right handed trihedral $({\bf J_F}, {\bf J_p}, {\bf J_n})$ and the left handed ones $(-{\bf J_F}, {\bf J_p}, {\bf J_n})$, $({\bf J_F}, -{\bf J_p}, {\bf J_n})$, $({\bf J_F}, {\bf J_p}, -{\bf J_n})$ where ${\bf J_F}, {\bf J_p}, {\bf J_n}$ are the angular momenta carried by fermions, proton and neutron bosons, respectively. The energies defined with the particle-core states form four chiral bands, two of them being degenerate. Electromagnetic properties of the chiral bands are investigated. Results are compared with the experimental data on $^{138}$Nd.

A new renormalization procedure of the quasiparticle random phase approximation

The ground state of a many body Hamiltonian considered in the quasiparticle representation is redefined by accounting for the quasiparticle quadrupole pairing interaction. The residual interaction of the newly defined quasiparticles is treated by the QRPA. Solutions of the resulting equations exhibit specific features. In particular, there is no interaction strength where the first root is vanishing. A comparison with other renormalization methods is presented.

Semi-phenomenological description of the chiral bands in $^{188,190}Os$

A set of interacting particles are coupled to a phenomenological core described using the generalized coherent state model. Among the particle-core states a finite set which have the property that the angular momenta carried by the proton and neutron quadrupole bosons and the particles, separately, are mutually orthogonal are identified. The magnetic properties of such states are studied. All terms of the model Hamiltonian exhibit chiral symmetry except the spin-spin interaction. There are four bands of the type with two-quasiparticle-core dipole states, exhibiting properties which are specific for magnetic twin bands. An application is presented, for the isotopes $^{188, 190}$Os.

A new picture for the chiral symmetry properties within a particle-core framework

The Generalized Coherent State Model, proposed previously for a unified description of magnetic and electric collective properties of nuclear systems, is extended to account for the chiral like properties of nuclear systems. To a phenomenological core described by the GCSM a set of interacting particles are coupled. Among the particle-core states one identifies a finite set which have the property that the angular momenta carried by the proton and neutron quadrupole bosons and the particles respectively, are mutually orthogonal. All terms of the model Hamiltonian satisfy the chiral symmetry except for the spin-spin interaction. The magnetic properties of the particle-core states, where the three mentioned angular momenta are orthogonal, are studied. A quantitative comparison of these features with the similar properties of states, where the three angular momenta belong to the same plane, is performed.

Description of the isotope chain $^{180-196}$Pt within some solvable approaches

Energies of the ground, $β$ and $γ$ bands as well as the associated B(E2) values are determined for each even-even isotope of the $^{180-196}$Pt chain by the exact solutions of some differential equations which approximate the generalized Bohr-Mottelson Hamiltonian. The emerging approaches are called the Sextic and Spheroidal Approach (SSA), the Sextic and Mathieu Approach (SMA), the Infinite Square Well and Spheroidal Approach (ISWSA) and the Infinite Square Well and Mathieu Approach (ISWMA), respectively. While the first three methods were formulated in some earlier papers of the present authors, ISWMA is an inedited approach of this work. Numerical results are compared with those obtained with the so called X(5) and Z(5) models. A contour plot for the probability density as function of the intrinsic dynamic deformations is given for a few states of the three considered bands with the aim of evidencing the shape evolution along the isotope chain and pointing out possible shape coexistence.

Application of the sextic oscillator with centrifugal barrier and the spheroidal equation for some X(5) candidate nuclei

The eigenvalue equation associated to the Bohr-Mottelson Hamiltonian is considered in the intrinsic reference frame and amended by replacing the harmonic oscillator potential in the $β$ variable with a sextic oscillator potential with centrifugal barrier plus a periodic potential for the $γ$ variable. After the separation of variables, the $β$ equation is quasi-exactly solved, while the solutions for the $γ$ equation are just the angular spheroidal functions. An anharmonic transition operator is used to determine the reduced E2 transition probabilities. The formalism is conventionally called the Sextic and Spheroidal Approach (SSA) and applied for several X(5) candidate nuclei: $^{176,178,180,188,190}$Os, $^{150}$Nd, $^{170}$W, $^{156}$Dy, $^{166,168}$Hf. The SSA predictions are in good agreement with the experimental data of the mentioned nuclei. The comparison of the SSA results with those yielded by other models, such as X(5) \cite{Iache9}, Infinite Square Well (ISW) \cite{Raduta}, and Davidson (D) like potential \cite{Raduta} for the $β$, otherwise keeping the spheroidal functions for the $γ$, and the Coherent State Model (CSM) \cite{Rad1,Rad2,Rad3,Rad4,RaSa,Rad5} respectively, suggests that SSA represents a good approach to describe nuclei achieving the critical point of the U(5)$\rightarrow$SU(3) shape phase transition.

Semi-microscopic description of the double backbending in some deformed even-even rare earth nuclei

A semi-microscopic model to study the neutron and proton induced backbending phenomena in some deformed even-even nuclei from the rare earth region, is proposed. The space of particle-core states is defined by the angular momentum projection of a quadrupole deformed product state. The backbending phenomena are described by mixing four rotational bands, defined by a set of angular momentum projected states, and a model Hamiltonian describing a set of paired particles moving in a deformed mean field and interacting with a phenomenological deformed core. The ground band corresponds to the configuration where all particles are paired while the other rotational bands are built on one neutron or/and one proton broken pair. Four rare earth even-even nuclei which present the second anomaly in the observed moments of inertia are successfully treated within the proposed model.
