Semi-microscopic description of the backbending phenomena in some deformed even-even nuclei

The mechanism of backbending is semi-phenomenologically investigated based on the hybridization of two rotational bands. These bands are defined by treating a model Hamiltonian describing two interacting subsystems: a set of particles moving in a deformed mean field and interacting among themselves through an effective pairing force and a phenomenological deformed core whose intrinsic ground state is an axially symmetric coherent boson state. The two components interact with each other by a quadrupole-quadrupole and a spin-spin interaction. The total Hamiltonian is considered in the space of states with good angular momentum, projected from a quadrupole deformed product function. The single-particle factor function defines the nature of the rotational bands, one corresponding to the ground band in which all particles are paired and another one built upon a $i_{13/2}$ neutron broken pair. The formalism is applied to six deformed even-even nuclei, known as being good backbenders. Agreement between theory and experiment is fairly good.

Interplay of classical and quantal features within the coherent state model

The classical and quantal features of a quadrupole coherent state and its projections over angular momentum and boson number are quantitatively analyzed in terms of the departure of the Heisenberg uncertainty relations from the classical limit. This study is performed alternatively for two choices of the pairs of conjugate coordinates. The role of deformation as mediator of classical and quantal behaviors is also commented. Although restoring the rotational and gauge symmetries makes the quantal features manifest dominantly for small deformation, these are blurred by increasing the deformation which pushes the system toward a classical limit.

Some exact results for the particle number projected BCS approach of the isovector proton-neutron pairing

The mean values of a many-body Hamiltonian including a proton-neutron pairing term and matrix elements of one-, two- and four-body operators within a basis of particle number projected BCS states, are analytically expressed in terms of a single function Q(N) depending on the number of particles, $N$. The function Q(N) is calculated using a recursion in $N$ in which the shells and the BCS angles are kept the same for any step of iteration. An illustrative example is numerically considered in a restricted single particle space. Some specific features for the standard BCS, the projection after variation approach as well as for the variation after projection formalism, are pointed out.

Sum rule for a Schiff-like dipole moment

The energy-weighted sum rule for an electric dipole transition operator of a Schiff type differs from the Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn sum rule by several corrective terms which depend on the number of system components, ${\cal N}$. The deviations are evaluated by two distinct approaches. One of them is based on the charge density expansion around an uniform distribution and provides an analytical ${\cal N}$ dependence for the sum rule while, the other one hinges of the RPA approach and yields compact expressions for corrections as function of the RPA amplitudes. Although the formalism might be considered for any many body system, we applied it for illustration, to the case of $Na$ clusters. One concludes that the RPA results for $Na$ clusters obey the modified TRK sum rule.

Energy weighted sum rule in Na clusters

Collective dipole excitations in sodium clusters

Some properties of small and medium sodium clusters are described within the RPA approach using a projected spherical single particle basis. The oscillator strengths calculated with a Schiff-like dipole transition operator and folded with Lorentzian functions are used to calculate the photoabsorbtion cross section spectra. The results are further employed to establish the dependence of the plasmon frequency on the number of cluster components. Static electric polarizabilities of the clusters excited in a RPA dipole state are also calculated. Comparison of our results with the corresponding experimental data show an overall good agreement.

Analytical description of the Coherent State Model for near vibrational and well deformed nuclei

Analytical formulas for the excitation energies as well as for the electric quadrupole reduced transition probabilities in the ground, beta and gamma bands were derived within the coherent state model for the near vibrational and well deformed nuclei. Numerical calculations were performed for 42 nuclei exhibiting various symmetries and therefore with specific properties. Comparison of the calculation results with the corresponding experimental data shows a good agreement. The parameters involved in the proposed model satisfy evident regularities being interpolated by smooth curves. Few of them, which fall out of the curves, are interpreted as signatures for a critical point in a specific phase transition. This is actually supported also by the figures showing the excitation energy dependence on the angular momentum. The formulas provided for energies and B(E2) values are very simple, being written in a compact form, and therefore easy to be handled to explain the new experimental data.

New features of the triaxial nuclei described with a coherent state model

Supplementing the Liquid Drop Model (LDM) Hamiltonian, written in the intrinsic reference frame, with a sextic oscillator plus a centrifugal term in the variable $β$ and a potential in $γ$ with a minimum in $\fracπ{6}$, the Schödinger equation is separated for the two variables which results in having a new description for the triaxial nuclei, called Sextic and Mathieu Approach (SMA). SMA is applied for two non-axial nuclei, $^{180}$Hf and $^{182}$W and results are compared with those yielded by the Coherent State Model (CSM). As the main result of this paper we derive analytically the equations characterizing SMA from a semi-classical treatment of the CSM Hamiltonian. In this manner the potentials in $β$ and $γ$ variables respectively, show up in a quite natural way which contrasts their ad-hoc choice when SMA emerges from LDM.

Description of the $2ννββ$ decay within a fully renormalized pnQRPA approach with a restored gauge symmetry

A many body Hamiltonian involving the mean field for a projected spherical single particle basis, the pairing interactions for alike nucleons and the dipole-dipole proton-neutron interactions in the particle-hole ($ph$) and particle-particle ($pp$) channels is treated by the projected gauge fully renormalized proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation (PGFRpnQRPA) approach. The resulting wave functions and energies for the mother and the daughter nuclei are used to calculate the $2νββ$ decay rate and the process half life. For illustration, the formalism is applied for the decay $^{100}$Mo$ \to$ $^{100}$Ru. The results are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental data. The Ikeda sum rule ($ISR$) is obeyed. The gauge projection makes the $pp$ interaction inefficient.

Semiclassical features of rotational ground bands

A time dependent variational principle is used to dequantize a second order quadrupole boson Hamiltonian. The classical equations for the generalized coordinate and the constraint for angular momentum are quantized and then analytically solved. A generalized Holmberg-Lipas formula for energies is obtained. A similar $J(J+1)$ dependence is provided by the coherent state model (CSM) in the large deformation regime, by using an expansion in powers of $1/x$ for energies, with $x$ denoting a deformation parameter squared. A simple compact expression is also possible for the near vibrational regime. These three expressions have been used for 44 nuclei covering regions characterized by different dynamic symmetries or in other words belonging to the all known nuclear phases. Nuclei satisfying the specific symmetries of the critical point in the phase transitions $O(6)\to SU(3)$, $SU(5)\to SU(3)$ have been also considered. The agreement between the results and the corresponding experimental data is very good. This is reflected in very small r.m.s. values of deviations.

The CSM extension for description of the positive and negative parity bands in even-odd nuclei

A particle-core Hamiltonian is used to describe the lowest parity partner bands $K^π=1/2^{\pm}$ in $^{219}$Ra, $^{237}$U and $^{239}$Pu, and three parity partner bands, $K^π=1/2^{\pm}, 3/2^{\pm}, 5/2^{\pm}$, in $^{227}$Ra. The core is described by a quadrupole and octupole boson Hamiltonian which was previously used for the description of four positive and four negative parity bands in the neighboring even-even isotopes. The particle-core Hamiltonian consists of four terms: a quadrupole-quadrupole, an octupole-octupole, a spin-spin and a rotational $\hat{I}^2$ interaction, with $\hat {I}$ denoting the total angular momentum. The single particle space for the odd nucleon consists of three spherical shell model states, two of positive and one of negative parity. The product of these states with a collective deformed ground state and the intrinsic gamma band state generate, through angular momentum projection, the bands with $K^π=1/2^{\pm},3/2^{\pm},5/2^{\pm}$, respectively. In the space of projected states one calculates the energies of the considered bands. The resulting excitation energies are compared with the corresponding experimental data as well as with those obtained with other approaches. Also, we searched for some signatures for a static octupole deformation in the considered odd isotopes. The calculated branching ratios in $^{219}$Ra agree quite well with the corresponding experimental data.

The CSM extension for the description of positive and negative parity bands in even-odd nuclei

A particle-core Hamiltonian is used to describe the lowest parity partner bands $K^π=1/2^{\pm}$ in $^{237}$U and $^{239}$Pu. The quadrupole and octupole boson Hamiltonian associated to the core is identical to the one previously used for the description of four positive and four negative parity bands in the neighboring even-even isotopes. The single particle space for the odd nucleon consists of three spherical shell model states, two of positive and one of negative parity. The particle-core Hamiltonian consists of four terms: a quadrupole-quadrupole, an octupole-octupole, a spin-spin and a rotational $\hat{I}^2$ interaction, with $\hat {I}$ denoting the total angular momentum. The parameters involved in the particle-core coupling Hamiltonian were fixed by fitting four particular energies in the two bands. The calculated excitation energies are compared with the corresponding experimental data as well as with those obtained with other approaches. Also, we searched for some signatures for a static octupole deformation in the considered odd isotopes.

A solvable model which has X(5) as a limiting symmetry and removes some inherent drawbacks

Solvable Hamiltonians for the $β$ and $γ$ intrinsic shape coordinates are proposed. The eigenfunctions of the $γ$ Hamiltonian are spheroidal periodic functions, while the Hamiltonian for the $β$ degree of freedom involves the Davidson's potential and admits eigenfunctions which can be expressed in terms of the generalized Legendre polynomials. The proposed model goes to X(5) in the limit of $|γ|$-small. Some drawbacks of the X(5) model, as are the eigenfunction periodicity and the $γ$ Hamiltonian hermiticity, are absent in the present approach. Results of numerical applications to $^{150}$Nd, $^{154}$Gd and $^{192}$Os are in good agreement to the experimental data. Comparison with X(5) calculations suggests that the present approach provides a quantitative better description of the data. This is especially true for the excitation energies in the gamma band.

Remarks on monopole charge properties within the Generalized Coherent State Model

The Generalized Coherent State Model, proposed previously for a unified description of magnetic and electric collective properties of nuclear systems, is used to study the ground state band charge density as well as the E0 transitions from $0^+_β$ to $0^+_g$. The influence of the nuclear deformation and of angular momentum projection on the charge density is investigated. The monopole transition amplitude has been calculated for ten nuclei. The results are compared with some previous theoretical studies and with the available experimental data. Our results concerning angular momentum projection are consistent with those of previous microscopic calculations for the ground state density. The calculations for the E0 transitions agree quite well with the experimental data. Issues like how the shape transitions or shape coexistence are reflected in the $ρ(E0)$ behavior are also addressed.

Phenomenological description of the states $0^+$ and $2^+$ in some even-even nuclei

A sixth-order quadrupole boson Hamiltonian is used to describe the states $0^+$ and $2^+$ identified in several nuclei by various types of experiments. Two alternative descriptions of energy levels are proposed. One corresponds to a semi-classical approach of the model Hamiltonian while the other one provides the exact eigenvalues. Both procedures yield close formulas for energies. The first procedure involves four parameters, while the second involves a compact formula with five parameters. In each case the parameters are fixed by a least-square fit procedure. Applications are performed for eight even-even nuclei. Both methods yield results which are in a surprisingly good agreement with the experimental data. We give also our predicted reduced transition probabilities within the two approaches, although the corresponding experimental data are not yet available.

A simple description of the states $0^+$ and $2^+$ in $^{168}Er$

A sixth-order quadrupole boson Hamiltonian is used to describe 26 states $0^+$ and 67 states $2^+$ which have been recently identified in $^{168}Er$. Two closed expressions are alternatively used for energy levels. One corresponds to a semi-classical approach while the other one represents the exact eigenvalue of the model Hamiltonian. The semi-classical expression involves four parameters, while the exact eigenvalue is determined by five parameters. In each of the two descriptions a least square fit procedure is adopted. Both expressions provide a surprisingly good agreement with the experimental data.
