Double beta decay to the first $2^+$ state within a boson expansion formalism with a projected spherical single particle basis

The Gamow-Teller transition operator is written as a polynomial in the dipole proton-neutron and quadrupole charge conserving QRPA boson operators, using the prescription of the boson expansion technique of Belyaev-Zelevinski type. Then, the $2νββ$ process ending on the first $2^+$ state in the daughter nucleus is allowed via one, two and three boson states describing the odd-odd intermediate nucleus. The approach uses a single particle basis which is obtained by projecting out the good angular momentum from an orthogonal set of deformed functions. The basis for mother and daughter nuclei have different deformations. The GT transition amplitude as well as the half lives were calculated for ten transitions. Results are compared with the available data as well as with some predictions obtained with other methods.

Solvable models for the gamma deformation having X(5) as limiting symmetry. Removing some drawbacks of the existent descriptions

Two solvable Hamiltonians for describing the dynamic gamma deformation, are proposed. The limiting case of each of them is the X(5) Hamiltonian. Analytical solutions for both energies and wave functions, which are periodic in $γ$, are presented in terms of spheroidal and Mathieu functions, respectively. Moreover, the gamma depending factors of the transition operator can be treated.

Underlying gauge symmetries of second-class constraints systems

Gauge-invariant systems in unconstrained configuration and phase spaces, equivalent to second-class constraints systems upon a gauge-fixing, are discussed. A mathematical pendulum on an $n-1$-dimensional sphere $S^{n-1}$ as an example of a mechanical second-class constraints system and the O(n) non-linear sigma model as an example of a field theory under second-class constraints are discussed in details and quantized using the existence of underlying dilatation gauge symmetry and by solving the constraint equations explicitly. The underlying gauge symmetries involve, in general, velocity dependent gauge transformations and new auxiliary variables in extended configuration space. Systems under second-class holonomic constraints have gauge-invariant counterparts within original configuration and phase spaces. The Dirac's supplementary conditions for wave functions of first-class constraints systems are formulated in terms of the Wigner functions which admit, as we show, a broad set of physically equivalent supplementary conditions. Their concrete form depends on the manner the Wigner functions are extrapolated from the constraint submanifolds into the whole phase space.

Simultaneous description of four positive and four negative parity bands

The extended coherent state model is further extended in order to describe two dipole bands of different parities. The formalism provides a consistent description of eight rotational bands. A unified description for spherical, transitional and deformed nuclei is possible. Projecting out the angular momentum and parity from a sole state, the $K^π=1^+$ band acquires a magnetic character, while the electric properties prevail for the other band. Signatures for a static octupole deformation in some states of the dipole bands are pointed out. Some properties which distinguish between the dipole band states and states of the same parity but belonging to other bands are mentioned. Interesting features concerning the decay properties of the two bands are found. Numerical applications are made for $^{158}$Gd, $^{172}$Yb, $^{228,232}$Th, $^{226}$Ra, $^{238}$U and $^{238}$Pu, and the results are compared with the available data.

Quantum deformation of the Dirac bracket

The quantum deformation of the Poisson bracket is the Moyal bracket. We construct quantum deformation of the Dirac bracket for systems which admit global symplectic basis for constraint functions. Equivalently, it can be considered as an extension of the Moyal bracket to second-class constraints systems and to gauge-invariant systems which become second class when gauge-fixing conditions are imposed.

Semiclassical description of a sixth order quadrupole boson Hamiltonian

A sixth order quadrupole boson Hamiltonian is treated through a time dependent variational principle approach choosing as trial function a coherent state with respect to zeroth $b^{\dagger}_0$ and second $b^{\dagger}_2+b^{\dagger}_{-2}$ components of the quadrupole bosons. The coefficients involved in the model Hamiltonian are chosen so that the classical effective potential energy term has two distinct minima. The equation of motion for the radial coordinate is analytically solved and the resulting trajectories are extensively studied. One distinguishes three energy regions exhibiting different types of trajectories. When one passes from the region characterized by two wells to the region of energies higher than the maximum value of the effective potential the trajectories period exhibits a singularity which reflects a phase transition. The classical trajectories are quantized by a constraint similar to the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition. The semiclassical spectra corresponding to the two potential wells have specific properties. The tunneling process through the potential barrier is also studied. The transmission coefficients exhibit jumps in magnitude when the angular momentum acquires certain values.

Expressions for the number of J=0 pairs in even-even Ti isotopes

We count the number of pairs in the single j-shell model of {44}Ti for various interactions. For a state of total angular momentum I, the wave function can be written in terms of the probability amplitude D(Jp Jn) that the protons couple to Jp and the neutrons to Jn. For I=0 there are three states with (I=0,T=0) and one with (I=0,T=2). The latter is the double analog of {44}Ca. In that case (T=2), the magnitude of D(JJ) is the same as that of a corresponding two-particle fractional parentage coefficient. In counting the number of pairs with an even angular momentum J, we find a new relationship obtained by diagonalizing a unitary nine-j symbol. We are also able to get results for the `no-interaction' case for T=0 states, for which it is found, e.g., that there are less (J=1,T=0) pairs than on the average. Relative to this `no-interaction case', we find for the most realistic interaction used that there is an enhancement of pairs with angular momentum J=0,2,1 and 7, and a depletion for the others. Also considered are interactions in which only the (J=0,T=1) pair state is at lower energy, only the (J=1,T=0) pair state is lowered and where both are equally lowered, as well as the QQ interaction. We are also able to obtain simplified formulae for the number of J=0 pairs for the I=0 states in {46}Ti and {48}Ti by noting that the unique state with isospin |Tz|+2 is orthogonal to all the states with isospin |Tz|.

Gauge invariant counterparts and quantization of systems under holonomic constraints

Systems under holonomic constraints are classified within the generalized Hamiltonian framework as second-class constraints systems. We show that each system of point particles with holonomic constraints has a hidden gauge symmetry which allows to quantize it in the original phase space as a first-class constraints system. The proposed method is illustrated with quantization of a point particle moving on an $n-1$-dimensional sphere $S^{n-1}$ as well as its field theory analog the O(n) nonlinear sigma model.

New features of some proton-neutron collective states

Using a schematic solvable many-body Hamiltonian, one studies a new type of proton-neutron excitations within a time dependent variational approach. Classical equations of motion are linearized and subsequently solved analytically. The harmonic state energy is compared with the energy of the first excited state provided by diagonalization as well as with the energies obtained by a renormalized RPA and a boson expansion procedure. The new collective mode describes a wobbling motion, in the space of isospin, and collapses for a particle-particle interaction strength which is much larger than the physical value. A suggestion for the description of the system in the second nuclear phase is made. We identified the transition operators which might excite the new mode from the ground state.

New results for the fully renormalized proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation

A many-body Hamiltonian describing a system of Z protons and N neutrons moving in spherical shell model mean field and interacting among themselves through proton-proton and neutron-neutron pairing and a dipole-dipole proton-neutron interaction of both particle-hole and particle-particle type, is treated within a fully renormalized (FR) pnQRPA approach. Two decoupling schemes are formulated. One of them decouples the equations of motion of particle total number conserving and non-conserving operators. One ends up with two very simple dispersion equations for phonon operators which are formally of Tamm-Dancoff types. For excitations in the (N-1,Z+1) system, Ikeda sum rule is fully satisfied provided the BCS equations are renormalized as well and therefore solved at a time with the FRpnQRPA equations. Next, one constructs two operators ${\cal R}^{\dagger}_{1μ}$, ${\cal R}_{1,-μ}(-)^{1-μ}$ which commutes with the particle total number conserving operators, ${\cal A}^{\dagger}_{1μ}$ and ${\cal A}_{1,-μ}(-)^{1-μ}$, and moreover could be renormalized so that they become bosons. Then, a phonon operator is built up as a linear combination of these four operators. The FRpnQRPA equations are written down for this complex phonon operator and the ISR is calculated analytically. This formalism allows for an unified description of the dipole excitations in four neighboring nuclei (N-1,Z+1),(N+1,Z-1),(N-1,Z-1),(N+1,Z+1). The phonon vacuum describes the (N,Z) system ground state.

Description of the two neutrino double beta decay in deformed nuclei with projected spherical single particle states

Using an angular momentum projected single particle basis, a pnQRPA approach is used to study the $2νββ$ properties of ten isotopes, exhibiting various quadrupole deformations. The mother and daughter nuclei exhibit different quadrupole deformations. Since the projected basis enables a unified description of deformed and spherical nuclei, situations where the nuclei involved in the double beta decay process are both spherical, both deformed or one spherical and another deformed, can be treated through a sole formalism. Dependence of single $β^-$ and $β^+$ strength distribution on atomic mass number and nuclear deformation is analyzed. For the double beta decay process, the Gamow-Teller transition amplitudes and half lives are calculated. Results are compared with the experimental data as well as with the predictions of other theoretical approaches. The agreement between the present results and experimental data is fairly good.

Remarcs on the shape transition from spherical to deformed gamma unstable nuclei

Energies and transition probabilities for low lying states in $^{134}$Ba and $^{104$Ru were calculated within a hybrid model. The ground and the first $2^+$ states are described alternatively as a harmonic and anharmonic vibrator states while the remaining states as states with E(5) symmetry. One concludes that a gradual setting of the 'critical' potential yields a better agreement with the experimental data. Very good agreement with the data is obtained for $^{104}$Ru. Comparing the present results with those of E(5) symmetry, it is conspicuous that the present formalism add corrections to the E(5) formalism by bringing the predictions closer to the experimental data. Analytical relationship between the states with U(5) symmetry and those given by the E(5) description is established.

New results for the missing quantum numbers labeling the quadrupole and octupole boson basis

The many $2^k$-pole boson states, $|N_kv_kα_k I_kM_k>$ with $k=2,3$, realize the irreducible representation (IR) for the group reduction chains $SU(2k+1)\supset R_{2k+1}\supset R_3\supset R_2$. They have been analytically studied and widely used for the description of nuclear systems. However, no analytical expression for the degeneracy $d_v(I)$ of the $R_{2k+1}$'s IR, determined by the reduction $R_{2k+1}\supset R_3$, is available. Thus, the number of distinct values taken by $α_k$ has been so far obtained by solving some complex equations. Here we derive analytical expressions for the degeneracy $d_v(I)$ characterizing the octupole and quadrupole boson states, respectively. The merit of this work consists of the fact that it completes the analytical expressions for the $2^k$-pole boson basis.

New results for the two neutrino double beta decay in deformed nuclei with angular momentum projected basis

Four nuclei which are proved to be $2νββ$ emitters ($^{76}$Ge, $^{82}$Se, $^{150}$Nd, $^{238}$U), and four suspected, due to the corresponding Q-values, to have this property ($^{148}$Nd, $^{154}$Sm, $^{160}$Gd, $^{232}$Th), were treated within a proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation (pnQRPA) with a projected spherical single particle basis. The advantage of the present procedure over the ones using a deformed Woods Saxon or Nilsson single particle basis is that the actual pnQRPA states have a definite angular momentum while all the others provide states having only K as a good quantum number. The model Hamiltonian involves a mean field term yielding the projected single particle states, a pairing interaction for alike nucleons and a dipole-dipole proton-neutron interaction in both the particle-hole (ph) and particle-particle (pp) channels. The effect of nuclear deformation on the single beta strength distribution as well as on the double beta Gamow-Teller transition amplitude (M$_{\rm GT}$) is analyzed. The results are compared with the existent data and with the results from a different approach, in terms of the process half life T$_{1/2}$. The case of different deformations for mother and daughter nuclei is also presented.

Counting pairs in $^{44}$Ti with various interactions

We count the number of pairs in the single $j-$shell model of $^{44}$Ti for various interactions. For a state of total angular momentum $I$, the wave function can be written as $Ψ=\sum_{J_P J_N} D(J_P J_N) [(j^2)_{J_P}(j^2)_{J_N}]_I$, where $D(J_P J_N)$ is the probability amplitude that the protons couple to $J_P$ and the neutrons to $J_N$. For I=0 there are three states with ($I=0, T=0$) and one with ($I=0, T=2$). The latter is the double analog of $^{44}$Ca. In that case (T=2), the magnitude of $D(JJ)$ is the same as that of a corresponding two particle fractional parentage coefficient. In counting the number of pairs with an even angular momentum $J_A$ we find a new relationship obtained by diagonalizing a unitary nine-j symbol. We are also able to get results for the 'no-interaction' case for T=0 states, for which it is found that there are less ($J=1, T=0$) pairs than on the average. Relative to this 'no-interaction case' we find for the most realistic interaction used that there is an enhancement of pairs with angular momentum $J_A=0,2,1$ and 7, and a depletion for the others. Also considered are interactions in which only the ($J=0, T=1$) pair state is at lower energy, only the ($J=1, T=0$) pair state is lowered and where both are equally lowered.

Description of single and double analog states in the f7/2 shell: The Ti isotopes

The excitation energies of single analog states in even-odd Ti isotopes and double analog states in even-even Ti isotopes are microscopically described in a single j-shell formalism. A projection procedure for generalized BCS states has been used. As an alternative description a particle-core formalism is presented. The latter picture provides a two-parameter expression for excitation energies, which describes fairly well the data in four odd and three even isotopes of Ti.

Charge exchange operators sum rules and proton-neutron T=0 and T=1 pairing interactions

We study sum rules for charge exchange operators of the Gamow-Teller and Fermi type and explore what can be learned from them about proton-neutron pairing in T=0 and T=1 channels. We consider both energy weighted (EWSR) and non-energy weighted (NEWSR) sum rules. We use a schematic Hamiltonian to stress the distinctive roles of T=1 and T=0 pair interactions and correlations in the sum rules. Numerical results for 44Ti are presented for both schematic and realistic interactions.

Non-Scissors-Mode Behaviour of Isovector Magnetic Dipole Orbital Transitions Involving Isospin Transfer

We study the response of isovector orbital magnetic dipole (IOMD) transitions to the quadrupole-quadrupole ($Q \cdot Q$) interaction, to the isospin-conserving pairing interaction (ICP) and to combinations of both. We find qualitatively different behaviours for transitions in which the final isospin differs from the initial isospin versus cases where the two isospins are the same. For $N=Z$ even-even nuclei with $J^π=0^+, T=0$ ground states such as $^8Be$ and $^{20}Ne$, the summed $T=0 \to T=1$ IOMD from the ground state to all the $J=1, T=1$ states in the $0 \hbar ω$ space does not vanish when the $Q \cdot Q$ interaction is turned off. The pairing interaction (ICP) alone leads to a finite transition rate. For nuclei with $J=0^+, T=1$ ground states such as $^{10}Be$ and $^{22}Ne$, the summed $T=1 \to T=1$ IOMD $does$ vanish when the $Q \cdot Q$ interaction is turned off, as is expected in a good scissors-mode behaviour. However this is not the case for the corresponding sum of the $T=1 \to T=2$ IOMD transitions. In $^{22}Ne$ (but not in $^{10}Be$) the sum of the $T=1 \to T=2$ IOMD transitions is remarkably insensitive to the strengths of both the $Q \cdot Q$ and the ICP interactions. In $^{22}Ne$ an energy weighted-sum is similarly insensitive. All our calculations were carried out in the $0 \hbar ω$ space.
