"Quick and dirty" technology for fabrication of a single BiSrCaCuO mesas

The technology of wet etching allowing fabrication of standalone BiSrCaCuO mesa structures was proposed. The produced mesas can be produced much thicker than ones usually being studied. The time required for the fabrication is much smaller in comparison with the standard method of ion milling. The process used is controllable which provides acceptable precision of mesa fabrication. The current-voltage characteristics of the sample showing Josephson nature were obtained. The qualitative comparison with characteristics of similar structures fabricated by other groups was carried out.

Comparative analysis of tunneling magnetoresistance in low-$T_c$ Nb/AlAlOx/Nb and high-$T_c$ Bi$_{2-y}$Pb$_y$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ intrinsic Josephson junctions

We perform a detailed comparison of magnetotunneling in conventional low-$T_c$ Nb/AlAlOx/Nb junctions with that in slightly overdoped Bi$_{2-y}$Pb$_y$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ [Bi(Pb)-2212] intrinsic Josephson junctions and with microscopic calculations. It is found that both types of junctions behave in a qualitatively similar way. Both magnetic field and temperature suppress superconductivity in the state-conserving manner. This leads to the characteristic sign-change of tunneling magnetoresistance from the negative at the sub-gap to the positive at the sum-gap bias. We derived theoretically and verified experimentally scaling laws of magnetotunneling characteristics and employ them for accurate extraction of the upper critical field $H_{c2}$. For Nb an extended region of surface superconductivity at $H_{c2} T_c/2$, but remains negative, although very small, above $T_c$. This may indicate existence of an extended fluctuation region, which, however, does not destroy the general second-order type of the phase transition at $T_c$.

Observation of superluminal geometrical resonances in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x intrinsic Josephson junctions

We study Fiske steps in small Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x mesa structures, containing only few stacked intrinsic Josephson junctions. Careful alignment of magnetic field prevents penetration of Abrikosov vortices and facilitates observation of a large variety of high quality geometrical resonances, including superluminal with velocities larger than the slowest velocity of electromagnetic waves. A small number of junctions limits the number of resonant modes and allows accurate identification of modes and velocities. It is shown that superluminal geometrical resonances can be excited by subluminal fluxon motion and that flux-flow itself becomes superluminal at high magnetic fields. We argue that observation of high-quality superluminal geometrical resonances is crucial for realization of the coherent flux-flow oscillator in the THz frequency range.

Anisotropic flux creep in Bi2212:Pb single crystal in crossed magnetic fields

An experimental study of magnetic flux penetration under crossed magnetic fields in Bi2212:Pb single crystals is performed by the magneto-optic technique. The anisotropy of the flux creep rate induced by the in-plane magnetic field is observed at $T<54\pm 2$ K. This observation confirms the existence of the three-dimensional flux line structure in Bi2212:Pb at low temperatures. An asymmetry of the flux relaxation with respect to the direction of the in-plane field is found. This effect can be attributed to the influence of the laminar structure on the pinning in Bi2212:Pb single crystals.

Strong 3D correlations in vortex system of Bi2212:Pb

The experimental study of magnetic flux penetration under crossed magnetic fields in Bi2212:Pb single crystal performed by magnetooptic technique (MO) reveals remarkable field penetration pattern alteration (flux configuration change) and superconducting current anisotropy enhancement by the in-plane field. The anisotropy increases with the temperature rise up to $T_m = 54 \pm 2 K$. At $T = T_m$ an abrupt change in the flux behavior is found; the correlation between the in-plane magnetic field and the out-of-plane magnetic flux penetration disappears. No correlation is observed for $T > T_m$. The transition temperature $T_m$ does not depend on the magnetic field strength. The observed flux penetration anisotropy is considered as an evidence of a strong 3D - correlation between pancake vortices in different CuO planes at $T < T_m$. This enables understanding of a remarkable pinning observed in Bi2212:Pb at low temperatures.
