Two-Pion production in the second resonance region in $π^- p$ collisions with HADES

Pion induced reactions provide unique opportunities for an unambiguous description of baryonic resonances and their coupling channels by means of a partial wave analysis. Using the secondary pion beam at SIS18, the two pion production in the second resonance region has been investigated to unravel the role of the $N(1520) \frac{3}{2}^-$ resonance in the intermediate $ρ$ production. Results on exclusive channels with one pion ($π^{-}p$) and two pions ($π^{+}π^{-}n$, $π^{0}π^{-}p$) in the final state measured in the $π^{-}-p$ reaction at four different pion beam momenta (0.650, 0.685, 0.733, and 0.786 GeV/c) are presented. The excitation function of the different partial waves and $Δπ$, $Nσ$ and $Nρ$ isobar configurations is obtained, using the Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis. The $N(1520) \frac{3}{2}^-$ resonance is found to dominate the $Nρ$ final state with the branching ratio $BR=12.2 \pm 1.9\%$.

Identical pion intensity interferometry in central Au+Au collisions at 1.23A GeV

We investigate identical pion HBT intensity interferometry for central Au+Au collisions at 1.23A GeV. High-statistics $π^-π^-$ and $π^+π^+$ data are measured with HADES at SIS18/GSI. The radius parameters, derived from the correlation function depending on relative momenta in the longitudinal-comoving system and parametrized as three-dimensional Gaussian distribution, are studied as function of transverse momentum. A substantial charge-sign difference of the source radii is found, particularly pronounced at low transverse momentum. The extracted Coulomb-corrected source parameters agree well with a smooth extrapolation of the center-of-mass energy dependence established at higher energies, extending the corresponding excitation functions down towards a very low energy. Our data would thus rather disfavour any strong energy dependence of the radius parameters in the low energy region.

Advancing LHC Probes of Dark Matter from the Inert 2-Higgs Doublet Model with the Mono-jet Signal

The inert 2-Higgs Doublet Model (i2HDM) is a well-motivated minimal consistent Dark Matter (DM) model, but it is rather challenging to test at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the parameter space allowed by relic density and DM direct detection constraints. This is especially true when considering the latest XENON 1T data on direct DM searches which we use here to present the best current combined limit on the i2HDM parameter space. In this analysis, we present prospects to advance the exploitation of DM mono-jet signatures from the i2HDM at the LHC, by emphasising that a shape analysis of the missing transverse momentum distribution allows one to sizably improve the LHC discovery potential. As a key element of our analysis, we explore the validity of using an effective vertex, $ggH$, for the coupling of the Higgs boson to gluons using a full one-loop computation. We have found sizeable differences between the two approaches, especially in the high missing transverse momentum region, and incorporated the respective K-factors to obtain the correct kinematical distributions. As a result, we delineate a realistic search strategy and present the improved current and projected LHC sensitivity to the i2HDM parameter space.

Sub-threshold production of K^{0}_{s} mesons and Λ hyperons in Au(1.23A GeV)+Au

We present first data on sub-threshold production of K0 s mesons and Λ hyperons in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.4 GeV. We observe an universal scaling of hadrons containing strangeness, independent of their corresponding production thresholds. Comparing the yields, their scaling, and the shapes of the rapidity and the pt spectra to state-of-the-art transport model (UrQMD, HSD, IQMD) predictions, we find that none of the latter can simultaneously describe all observables with reasonable \c{hi}2 values.

Strong absorption of hadrons with hidden and open strangeness in nuclear matter

We present the first observation of K- and ϕabsorption within nuclear matter by means of π- -induced reactions on C and W targets at an incident beam momentum of 1.7 GeV/c studied with HADES at SIS18/GSI. The double ratio (K-/K+)W / (K-/K+)C is found to be 0.319 \pm 0.009(stat)+0.014-0.012 (syst) indicating a larger absorption of K- in heavier targets as compared to lighter ones. The measured ϕ/K- ratios in π-+C and π^- +W reactions within the HADES acceptance are found to be equal to $0.55 \pm 0.03(stat)+0.06-0.07$ (syst) and to $0.63 \pm 0.05(stat)-0.11+0.11$ (syst), respectively. The similar ratios measured in the two different reactions demonstrate for the first time experimentally that the dynamics of the ϕmeson in nuclear medium is strongly coupled to the K- dynamics. The large difference in the ϕproduction off C and W nuclei is discussed in terms of a strong \phiN in-medium coupling.

Centrality determination of Au+Au collisions at 1.23A GeV with HADES

The centrality determination for Au+Au collisions at 1.23A GeV, as measured with HADES at the GSI-SIS18, is described. In order to extract collision geometry related quantities, such as the average impact parameter or number of participating nucleons, a Glauber Monte Carlo approach is employed. For the application of this model to collisions at this relatively low centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 2.42$ GeV special investigations were performed. As a result a well defined procedure to determine centrality classes for ongoing analyses of heavy-ion data is established.

Deep sub-threshold ϕ production and implications for the K+/K- freeze-out in Au+Au collisions

We present data on charged kaons (K+-) and ϕ mesons in Au(1.23A GeV)+Au collisions. It is the first simultaneous measurement of K and ϕ mesons in central heavy-ion collisions below a kinetic beam energy of 10A GeV. The ϕ/K- multiplicity ratio is found to be surprisingly high with a value of 0.52 +- 0.16 and shows no dependence on the centrality of the collision. Consequently, the different slopes of the K+ and K- transverse-mass spectra can be explained solely by feed- down, which substantially softens the spectra of K- mesons. Hence, in contrast to the commonly adapted argumentation in literature, the different slopes do not necessarily imply diverging freeze- out temperatures of K+ and K- mesons caused by different couplings to baryons.

$Δ$(1232) Dalitz decay in proton-proton collisions at T=1.25 GeV measured with HADES

We report on the investigation of $Δ$(1232) production and decay in proton-proton collisions at a kinetic energy of 1.25 GeV measured with HADES. Exclusive dilepton decay channels $ppe^{+}e^{-}$ and $ppe^{+}e^{-}γ$ have been studied and compared with the partial wave analysis of the hadronic $ppπ^{0}$ channel. They allow to access both $Δ^+ \to pπ^0(e^+e^-γ)$ and $Δ^+ \to pe^+e^-$ Dalitz decay channels. The perfect reconstruction of the well known $π^0$ Dalitz decay serves as a proof of the consistency of the analysis. The $Δ$ Dalitz decay is identified for the first time and the sensitivity to N-$Δ$ transition form factors is tested. The $Δ$(1232) Dalitz decay branching ratio is also determined for the first time; our result is (4.19 $\pm$ 0.62 syst. $\pm$ 0.34 stat.) $\times $ 10$^{-5}$, albeit with some model dependence.

Analysis of pion production data measured by HADES in proton-proton collisions at 1.25 GeV

Baryon resonance production in proton-proton collisions at a kinetic beam energy of 1.25 GeV is investigated. The multi-differential data were measured by the HADES collaboration. Exclusive channels with one pion in the final state ($npπ^{+}$ and $ppπ^{0}$) were put to extended studies based on various observables in the framework of a one-pion exchange model and with solutions obtained within the framework of a partial wave analysis (PWA) of the Bonn-Gatchina group. The results of the PWA confirm the dominant contribution of the $Δ$(1232), yet with a sizable impact of the $N$(1440) and non-resonant partial waves.

Analysis of the exclusive final state npe$^+$e$^-$ in quasi-free np reaction

We report on the investigation of dielectron production in tagged quasi-free neutron-proton collisions by using a deuteron beam of kinetic energy 1.25 GeV/u inpinging on a liquid hydrogen target. Our measurements with HADES confirm a significant excess of $e^+e^-$ pairs above the $π^{0}$ mass in the exclusive channel $dp \to npe^{+}e^{-}(p_{spect})$ as compared to the exclusive channel $ppe^{+}e^{-}$ measured in proton-proton collisions at the same energy. That excess points to different bremsstrahlung production mechanisms. Two models were evaluated for the role of the charged pion exchange between nucleons and double-$Δ$ excitation combined with intermediate $ρ$-meson production. Differential cross sections as a function of the $e^+e^-$ invariant mass and of the angles of the virtual photon, proton and electrons provide valuable constraints and encourage further investigations on both experimental and theoretical side.

Statistical model analysis of hadron yields in proton-nucleus and heavy-ion collisions at SIS 18 energies

The HADES data from p+Nb collisions at center of mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 3.2 GeV are analyzed by employing a statistical model. Accounting for the identified hadrons $π^0$, $η$, $Λ$, $K^{0}_{s}$, $ω$ allows a surprisingly good description of their abundances with parameters $T_{chem}=(99\pm11)$ MeV and $μ_{b}=(619\pm34)$ MeV, which fits well in the chemical freeze-out systematics found in heavy-ion collisions. In supplement we reanalyze our previous HADES data from Ar+KCl collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 2.6 GeV with an updated version of the statistical model. We address equilibration in heavy-ion collisions by testing two aspects: the description of yields and the regularity of freeze-out parameters from a statistical model fit. Special emphasis is put on feed-down contributions from higher-lying resonance states which have been proposed to explain the experimentally observed $Ξ^-$ excess present in both data samples.

Natural SUSY: LHC and Dark Matter direct detection experiments interplay

Natural SUSY scenarios with a low value of the $μ$ parameter, are characterised by a higgsino-like dark matter candidate, and a compressed spectrum for the lightest higgsinos. We explore the prospects for probing this scenario at the 13 TeV stage of the LHC via monojet searches, with various integrated luminosity options, and demonstrate how these results are affect by different assumptions on the achievable level of control on the experimental systematic uncertainties. The complementarity between collider and direct detection experiments (present and future) is also highlighted.

XQCAT: eXtra Quark Combined Analysis Tool

XQCAT (eXtra Quark Combined Analysis Tool) is a tool aimed at determining exclusion confidence levels for scenarios of new physics characterised by the presence of one or multiple heavy extra quarks which interact through Yukawa couplings with any of the Standard Model quarks. The code uses a database of efficiencies for pre-simulated processes of QCD-induced pair production of extra quarks and their subsequent on-shell decays. In the version 1.2 of XQCAT the efficiencies have been computed for a set of seven publicly available search results by the CMS experiment. The input for the code is a text file in which masses, branching ratios and dominant chirality of the couplings of the new quarks are provided. The output of the code is the exclusion confidence levels of the test point for each implemented experimental analysis considered individually and, when possible, in statistical combination.

K*(892)+ production in proton-proton collisions at E_beam = 3.5 GeV

We present results on the K*(892)+ production in proton-proton collisions at a beam energy of E = 3.5 GeV, which is hitherto the lowest energy at which this mesonic resonance has been observed in nucleon-nucleon reactions. The data are interpreted within a two-channel model that includes the 3-body production of K*(892)+ associated with the Lambda- or Sigma-hyperon. The relative contributions of both channels are estimated. Besides the total cross section sigma(p+p -> K*(892)+ + X) = 9.5 +- 0.9 +1.1 -0.9 +- 0.7 mub, that adds a new data point to the excitation function of the K*(892)+ production in the region of low excess energy, transverse momenta and angular spectra are extracted and compared with the predictions of the two-channel model. The spin characteristics of K*(892)+ are discussed as well in terms of the spin-alignment.

$A_{FB}$ as a discovery tool for $Z^\prime$ bosons at the LHC

The Forward-Backward Asymmetry (AFB) in $Z^\prime$ physics is commonly only perceived as the observable which possibly allows one to interpret a $Z^\prime$ signal by distinguishing different models of such (heavy) spin-1 bosons. In this article, we examine the potential of AFB in setting bounds on or even discovering a $Z^\prime$ at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and show that it might be a powerful tool for this purpose. We analyze two different scenarios: $Z^\prime$s with a narrow and wide width, respectively. We find that in both cases AFB can complement the cross section in accessing $Z^\prime$ signals.

Forward-Backward Asymmetry as a Discovery Tool for Z' Bosons at the LHC

The Forward-Backward Asymmetry (AFB) in Z' physics is commonly only perceived as the observable which possibly allows one to interpret a Z' signal by distinguishing different models of such (heavy) spin-1 bosons. In this paper, we examine the potential of AFB in setting bounds on or even discovering a Z' boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and show that it might be a powerful tool for this purpose. We analyse two different scenarios: Z' bosons with a narrow and wide width, respectively. We find that, in the first case, the significance of the AFB search can be comparable with that of the bump search usually adopted by the experimental collaborations; however, being a ratio of (differential) cross sections the AFB has the advantage of reducing systematical errors. In the second case, the AFB search can win over the bump search in terms of event shape, as the structure of the AFB distribution as a function of the invariant mass of the reconstructed Z'boson could nail down the new broad resonance much better than the event counting strategy usually adopted in such cases.

Framework for Model Independent Analyses of Multiple Extra Quark Scenarios

In this paper we present an analysis strategy and a dedicated tool to determine the exclusion confidence level for any scenario involving multiple heavy extra quarks with generic decay channels, as predicted in several extensions of the Standard Model. We have created, validated and used a software package, called XQCAT (eXtra Quark Combined Analysis Tool), which is based on publicly available experimental data from direct searches for top partners and from Supersymmetry inspired searches. By means of this code, we recast the limits from CMS on new heavy extra quarks considering a complete set of decay channels. The resulting exclusion confidence levels are presented for some simple scenarios with multiple states and general coupling assumptions. Highlighting the importance of combining multiple topology searches to obtain accurate re-interpretations of the existing searches, we discuss the reach of the SUSY analyses so as to set bounds on new quark resonances. In particular, we report on the re-interpretation of the existing limits on benchmark scenarios with one and multiple pair-produced top partners having non-exclusive couplings to the third Standard Model generation of quarks.

Partial Wave Analysis of the Reaction $p(3.5 GeV)+p \to pK^+Λ$ to Search for the "$ppK^-$" Bound State

Employing the Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis framework (PWA), we have analyzed HADES data of the reaction $p(3.5GeV)+p\to pK^{+}Λ$. This reaction might contain information about the kaonic cluster "$ppK^-$" via its decay into $pΛ$. Due to interference effects in our coherent description of the data, a hypothetical $\overline{K}NN$ (or, specifically "$ppK^-$") cluster signal must not necessarily show up as a pronounced feature (e.g. a peak) in an invariant mass spectra like $pΛ$. Our PWA analysis includes a variety of resonant and non-resonant intermediate states and delivers a good description of our data (various angular distributions and two-hadron invariant mass spectra) without a contribution of a $\overline{K}NN$ cluster. At a confidence level of CL$_{s}$=95\% such a cluster can not contribute more than 2-12\% to the total cross section with a $pK^{+}Λ$ final state, which translates into a production cross-section between 0.7 $μb$ and 4.2 $μb$, respectively. The range of the upper limit depends on the assumed cluster mass, width and production process.
