Intersection cohomology of Drinfeld's compactifications

Let $X$ be a smooth complete curve, $G$ be a reductive group and $P\subset G$ a parabolic. Following Drinfeld, one defines a compactification $\widetilde{\on{Bun}}_P$ of the moduli stack of $P$-bundles on $X$. The present paper is concerned with the explicit description of the Intersection Cohomology sheaf of $\widetilde{\on{Bun}}_P$. The description is given in terms of the combinatorics of the Langlands dual Lie algebra $\check{\mathfrak g}$.

Uhlenbeck spaces via affine Lie algebras

Let $G$ be an almost simple simply connected group over $\BC$, and let $\Bun^a_G(\BP^2,\BP^1)$ be the moduli scheme of principal $G$-bundles on the projective plave $\BP^2$, of second Chern class $a$, trivialized along a line $\BP^1\subset \BP^2$. We define the Uhlenbeck compactification $\fU^a_G$ of $\Bun^a_G(\BP^2,\BP^1)$, which classifies, roughly, pairs $(\F_G,D)$, where $D$ is a 0-cycle on $\BA^2=\BP^2-\BP^1$ of degree $b$, and $\F_G$ is a point of $\Bun^{a-b}_G(\BP^2,\BP^1)$, for varying $b$. In addition, we calculate the stalks of the Intersection Cohomology sheaf of $\fU^a_G$. To do that we give a geometric realization of Kashiwara's crystals for affine Kac-Moody algebras.

Maximum likelihood estimation of cloud height from multi-angle satellite imagery

We develop a new estimation technique for recovering depth-of-field from multiple stereo images. Depth-of-field is estimated by determining the shift in image location resulting from different camera viewpoints. When this shift is not divisible by pixel width, the multiple stereo images can be combined to form a super-resolution image. By modeling this super-resolution image as a realization of a random field, one can view the recovery of depth as a likelihood estimation problem. We apply these modeling techniques to the recovery of cloud height from multiple viewing angles provided by the MISR instrument on the Terra Satellite. Our efforts are focused on a two layer cloud ensemble where both layers are relatively planar, the bottom layer is optically thick and textured, and the top layer is optically thin. Our results demonstrate that with relative ease, we get comparable estimates to the M2 stereo matcher which is the same algorithm used in the current MISR standard product (details can be found in [IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing 40 (2002) 1547--1559]). Moreover, our techniques provide the possibility of modeling all of the MISR data in a unified way for cloud height estimation. Research is underway to extend this framework for fast, quality global estimates of cloud height.

Deformations of local systems and Eisenstein series

Let $X$ be a (smooth and complete) curve and $G$ a reductive group. In [BG] we introduced the object that we called "geometric Eisenstein series". This is a perverse sheaf $\bar{Eis}_E$ (or rather a complex of such) on the moduli stack $Bun_G(X)$ of principal $G$-bundles on $X$, which is attached to a local system $E$ on $X$ with respect to the torus $\check{T}$, Langlands dual to the Cartan subgroup $T\subset G$. In loc. cit. we showed that$\bar{Eis}_E$ corresponds to the $\check{G}$-local system induced from $E$, in the sense of the geometric Langlands correspondence. In the present paper we address the following question, suggested by V. Drinfeld: what is the perverse sheaf on $Bun_G(X)$ that corresponds to the universal deformation of $E$ as a local system with respect to the Borel subgroup $\check{B}\subset \check{G}$? We prove, following a conjecture of Drinfeld, that the resulting perverse sheaf if the classical, i.e., non-compactified Eisenstein series.

Modules over the small quantum group and semi-infinite flag manifold

We develop a theory of perverse sheaves on the semi-infinite flag manifold $G((t))/N((t))\cdot T[[t]]$, and show that the subcategory of Iwahori-monodromy perverse sheaves is equivalent to the regular block of the category of representations of the small quantum group at an even root of unity.

Geometric Eisenstein series

The purpose of this of this paper is to develop the theory of Eisenstein series in the framework of geometric Langlands correspondence. Our construction is based on the study of certain relative compactification of the moduli stack of parabolic bundles on a curve suggested by V.Drinfeld. As an application we construct certain automorphic forms for global fields of positive characteristic, whose existence is non-obvious from the point of view of classical tools.

On Ginzburg's Lagrangian construction of representations of GL(n)

In 1991 V. Ginzburg observed that one can realize irreducible representations of the group $GL(n,C)$ in the cohomology of certain Springer's fibers for the group GL(d) (for all natural d). However, Ginzburg's construction of the action of GL(n) on this cohomology was a bit artificial (he defined the action of Chevalley generators of the Lie algebra gl(n) on the corresponding cohomology by certain explicit correspondences, following the work of A. Beilinson, G. Lusztig and R. MacPherson, who gave a similar construction of the quantum group $U_q(gl(n))$). In this note we give a very simple geometric definition of the action of the whole group GL(n,C) on the above cohomology and simplify the Ginzburg's results.
