Nature of Well-Screened State in Hard X-ray Mn 2$p$ Core-Level Photoemission of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ Films

Using hard x-ray (HX ; $hν$ = 5.95 keV) synchrotron photoemission spectroscopy (PES), we study the intrinsic electronic structure of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) thin films. Comparison of Mn 2$p$ core-levels with Soft x-ray (SX ; $hν$ $\sim$ 1000 eV) -PES shows a clear additional well-screened feature only in HX-PES. Take-off-angle dependent data indicate its bulk ($\ge$ 20 Å) character. The doping and temperature dependence track the ferromagnetism and metallicity of the LSMO series. Cluster model calculations including charge transfer from doping induced states show good agreement, confirming this picture of bulk properties reflected in Mn 2$p$ core-levels using HX-PES.

Doping Dependent Changes in Nitrogen 2$p$ States in the Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor Ga$_{1-x}$Cr$_{x}$N

We study the electronic structure of the recently discovered diluted magnetic semiconductor Ga$_{1-x}$Cr$_{x}$N ($x$ = 0.01-0.10). A systematic study of the changes in the $occupied$ and $unoccupied$ ligand (N) partial density of states (DOS) of the host lattice is carried out using N 1$s$ soft x-ray emission and absorption spectroscopy, respectively. X-ray absorption measurements confirm the wurtzite N 2$p$ DOS and substitutional doping of Cr into Ga-sites. Coupled changes in the $occupied$ and $unoccupied$ N 2$p$ character DOS of Ga$_{1-x}$Cr$_{x}$N identify states responsible for ferromagnetism consistent with band structure calculations.

Laser-excited ultrahigh-resolution photoemission spectroscopy of NaxCoO2.yH2O:Evidence for pseudogap formation

We have studied the temperature-dependent electronic structure near the Fermi level (EF) of the layered cobaltate superconductor, Na0.35CoO2.1.3H2O, and related materials, using laser-excited ultrahigh-resolution photoemission spectroscopy. We observe the formation of a pseudogap with an energy scale of ~ 20 meV in Na0.35CoO2.1.3H2O and Na0.35CoO2.0.7H2O, which is clearly absent in Na0.7CoO2. The energy scale of the pseudogap is larger than the expected value for the superconducting gap, suggesting an additional competing order parameter at low temperatures. We discuss implications of the pseudogap in relation to available transport and magnetic susceptibility results.

Layer dependent band dispersion and correlations using tunable Soft X-ray ARPES

Soft X-ray Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy is applied to study in-plane band dispersions of Nickel as a function of probing depth. Photon energies between 190 and 780 eV were used to effectively probe up to 3-7 layers. The results show layer dependent band dispersion of the Delta_2 minority-spin band which crosses the Fermi level in 3 or more layers, in contrast to known top 1-2 layers dispersion obtained using ultra-violet rays. The layer dependence corresponds to an increased value of exchange splitting and suggests reduced correlation effects in the bulk compared to the surface.

Bulk Electronic structure of Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}$.1.3H$_{2}$O

High-energy (h$ν$ = 5.95 keV) synchrotron Photoemission spectroscopy (PES) is used to study bulk electronic structure of Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}$.1.3H$_{2}$O, the layered superconductor. In contrast to 3-dimensional doped Co oxides, Co $\it{2p}$ core level spectra show well-separated Co$^{3+}$ and Co$^{4+}$ ions. Cluster calculations suggest low spin Co$^{3+}$ and Co$^{4+}$ character, and a moderate on-site Coulomb correlation energy U$_{dd}\sim$3-5.5 eV. Photon dependent valence band PES identifies Co $\it{3d}$ and O $\it{2p}$ derived states, in near agreement with band structure calculations.

Electron-phonon coupling induced pseudogap and the superconducting transition in Ba0.67K0.33BiO3

We study the single particle density of states (DOS) across the superconducting transition (Tc = 31 K) in single-crystal Ba0.67K0.33BiO3 using ultrahigh resolution angle-integrated photoemission spectroscopy. The superconducting gap opens with a pile-up in the DOS, Delta(5.3 K) = 5.2 meV and 2Delta(0)/kBTc = 3.9. In addition, we observe a pseudogap below and above Tc, occurring as a suppression in intensity over an energy scale up to the breathing mode phonon(~ 70 meV). The results indicate electron-phonon coupling induces a pseudogap in Ba0.67K0.33BiO3.

Disorder effects in electronic structure of substituted transition metal compounds

Investigating LaNi(1-x)M(x)O3 (M = Mn and Fe), we identify a characteristic evolution of the spectral function with increasing disorder in presence of strong interaction effects across the metal-insulator transition. We discuss these results vis-a-vis existing theories of electronic structure in simultaneous presence of disorder and interaction.
