Combining photoemission and optical spectroscopies for reliable valence determination in YbS and Yb metal

Hard x-ray photoemission and optical spectroscopies have been performed on YbS and Yb metal to determine the precise $f$-electron occupation. A comparison of the photoemission spectra with the energy loss functions in bulk and surface, obtained from optical reflectivity, enables us to distinguish between the energy loss satellite of Yb$^{2+}$ peak and Yb$^{3+}$ multiplet. The results clearly indicate a purely divalent Yb state except for the surface of YbS. We demonstrate that the present method is highly reliable in identifying the electronic structure and the mean valence in $f$-electron systems.

Photoemission evidence for a Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition in VO$_2$

The temperature ($T$) dependent metal-insulator transition (MIT) in VO$_2$ is investigated using bulk sensitive hard x-ray ($\sim$ 8 keV) valence band, core level, and V 2$p-3d$ resonant photoemission spectroscopy (PES). The valence band and core level spectra are compared with full-multiplet cluster model calculations including a coherent screening channel. Across the MIT, V 3$d$ spectral weight transfer from the coherent ($d^1\underbar{\it {C}}$ final) states at Fermi level to the incoherent ($d^{0}+d^1\underbar{\it {L}}$ final) states, corresponding to the lower Hubbard band, lead to gap-formation. The spectral shape changes in V 1$s$ and V 2$p$ core levels as well as the valence band are nicely reproduced from a cluster model calculations, providing electronic structure parameters. Resonant-PES finds that the $d^1\underbar{\it{L}}$ states resonate across the V 2$p-3d$ threshold in addition to the $d^{0}$ and $d^1\underbar{\it {C}}$ states. The results support a Mott-Hubbard transition picture for the first order MIT in VO$_2$.

Recoil Effect of Photoelectrons in the Fermi-Edge of Simple Metals

High energy resolution photoelectron spectroscopy of conduction electrons in the vicinity of the Fermi-edge in Al and Au at the excitation energy of 880 and 7940 eV was carried out using synchrotron radiation. For the excitation energy of 7940 eV, the observed Fermi energy of Al shows a remarkable shift to higher binding energy as compared with that of Au, with accompanying broadening. This is due to the recoil effect of the emitted photoelectrons. The observed spectra are well reproduced by a simple model of Bloch electrons based on the isotropic Debye model.

Revisiting the valence-band and core-level photoemission spectra of NiO

We have re-examined the valence-band (VB) and core-level electronic structure of NiO by means of hard and soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (PES). The spectral weight of the lowest energy state found to be enhanced in the bulk sensitive Ni 2p core-level PES. A configuration-interaction model including the bound state screening has shown significant agreement with the core-level spectra, and the off and on-resonance VB spectra. These results identify the lowest energy state in core-level and VB-PES as the Zhang-Rice doublet bound state, consistent with the spin-fermion model and recent ab initio calculation with dynamical mean-field theory (LDA + DMFT).

Coherent and Incoherent States of Electron-doped SrTiO3

Resonant photoemission at the Ti 2p and O 1s edges on a Nb-doped SrTiO3 thin film revealed that the coherent state (CS) at the Fermi level (EF) had mainly Ti 3d character whereas the incoherent in-gap state (IGS) positioned ~1.5 eV below EF had mixed character of Ti 3d and O 2p states. This indicates that the IGS is formed by a spectral-weight transfer from the CS and subsequent spectral-weight redistribution through d-p hybridization. We discuss the evolution of the excitation spectrum with 3d band filling and rationalize the IGS through a mechanism similar to that proposed by Haldane and Anderson.

Doping-dependence of nodal quasiparticle properties in high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates studied by laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We investigate the doping dependent low energy, low temperature ($T$ = 5 K) properties of nodal quasiparticles in the d-wave superconductor Bi$_{2.1}$Sr$_{1.9}$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212). By utilizing ultrahigh resolution laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we obtain precise band dispersions near $E_{F}$, mean free paths and scattering rates ($Γ$) of quasiparticles. For optimally and overdoped, we obtain very sharp quasiparticle peaks of 8 meV and 6 meV full-width at half-maximum, respectively, in accord with terahertz conductivity. For all doping levels, we find the energy-dependence of $Γ\sim |ω|$, while $Γ$($ω=0$) shows a monotonic increase from overdoping to underdoping. The doping dependence suggests the role of electronic inhomogeneity on the nodal quasiparticle scattering at low temperature (5 K $\lsim 0.07T_{\rm c}$), pronounced in the underdoped region.

Hidden Charge-Density-Wave Order in a Low-Tc Superconductor 2H-NbSe2

The Charge-density-wave(CDW) in 2H-NbSe2(TCDW ~ 33 K), which coexists with superconductivity(Tc = 7.2 K), is investigated using Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy as a function of temperature. Across TCDW, energy and momentum(k) distribution curves show changes associated with the primary and secondary CDW vectors. The CDW is due to hidden charge order occurring at specific k-points on Fermi surfaces in the 2-dimensional Brillouin zone(2D BZ) with spectral weight suppression, but no gap formation. The study rules out nesting in the 2D BZ and the van Hove singularity driven CDW transition in 2H-NbSe2.

Hard X-ray Cu $2p$ Core-Level Photoemission of High-$T_c$ Cuprate Superconductors

We have performed a detailed study of Cu $2p$ core-level spectra in single layer La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$, La doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi2201) and bilayer Bi$_2$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) high-temperature superconductors by using hard x-ray photoemission (HX-PES). We identify the Cu$^{2+}$ derived (i) the Zhang-Rice singlet (ZRS) feature, (ii) the $d^{n+1}\underline{L}$ (ligand screened) feature, (iii) the $d^{n}$ satellite feature, as well as the hole-doping derived high binding energy feature in the main peak. In Bi-based cuprates, intensities of the $d^{n}$ satellite features seem to be strongly enhanced compared to La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$. From x-ray photon energy dependent measurements, it is shown that the increased intensity in the satellite region is associated with Bi $4s$ core-level spectral intensity. The corrected $d^{n}$ satellite intensity is independent of the doping content or number of Cu-O layers. Our results suggest a correlation of the relative intensity of ZRS feature and hole-doping induced high binding energy spectral changes in the main peak with superconductivity.

Angle-resolved photoemission study of cobalt oxide superconductor NaxCoO2.yH2O : Observation of the Fermi surface

Cobalt oxide superconductor NaxCoO2.yH2O is studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We report the Fermi surface (FS) topology and electronic structure near the Fermi level (EF) of NaxCoO2.yH2O. Our result indicates the presence of the hexagonal FS centered at G point, while the small pocket FSs along G-K direction are absent similar to NaxCoO2. The top of the eg' band, which is expected in band calculations to form the small pocket FSs, extends to within 20 - 50 meV below EF, more closer to EF than in NaxCoO2. We discuss its possible role in superconductivity, comparing with other experimental and theoretical results.

Evidence for mass renormalization in LaNiO$"" sub 3_: an in situ soft x-ray photoemission study of epitaxial films

We investigate the electronic structure of high-quality single-crystal LaNiO$_3$ (LNO) thin films using in situ photoemission spectroscopy (PES). The in situ high-resolution soft x-ray PES measurements on epitaxial thin films reveal the intrinsic electronic structure of LNO. We find a new sharp feature in the PES spectra crossing the Fermi level, which is derived from the correlated Ni 3$d$ $e_g$ electrons. This feature shows significant enhancement of spectral weight with decreasing temperature. From a detailed analysis of resistivity data, the enhancement of spectral weight is attributed to increasing electron correlations due to antiferromagnetic fluctuations.

Electronic structure of semiconducting CeFe$_4$P$_{12}$: Strong hybridization and relevance of single-impurity Anderson model

Semiconducting skutterudite CeFe$_4$P$_{12}$ is investigated by synchrotron x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Ce 3$d$ core-level PES and 3$d-4f$ XAS, in combination with single impurity Anderson model (SIAM) calculations, confirm features due to $f^0$, $f^1$ and $f^2$ configurations. The Ce 4$f$ density of states (DOS) indicates absence of a Kondo resonance at Fermi level, but can still be explained by SIAM with a small gap in non-$f$ DOS. While Ce 4$f$ partial DOS from band structure calculations are also consistent with the main Ce 4$f$ DOS, the importance of SIAM for core and valence spectra indicates Kondo semiconducting mixed valence for CeFe$_4$P$_{12}$, derived from strong hybridization between non-$f$ conduction and Ce 4$f$ DOS.

Bulk and surface-sensitive high-resolution photoemission study of Mott-Hubbard systems SrVO$_3$ and CaVO$_3$

We study the electronic structure of Mott-Hubbard systems SrVO$_{3}$ and CaVO$_3$ with bulk and surface-sensitive high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy (PES), using a VUV laser, synchrotron radiation and a discharge lamp ($hν$ = 7 - 21 eV). A systematic suppression of the density of states (DOS) within $\sim$ 0.2 eV of the Fermi level ($E_F$) is found on decreasing photon energy i.e. on increasing bulk sensitivity. The coherent band in SrVO$_{3}$ and CaVO$_3$ is shown to consist of surface and bulk derived features, separated in energy. The stronger distortion on surface of CaVO$_{3}$ compared to SrVO$_{3}$ leads to higher surface metallicity in the coherent DOS at $E_F$, consistent with recent theory.

Suppression of Magnetic Frustration by Doping in a nearest-neighbour anti-ferromagnetic triangular lattice

Based on experimental observations in A{x}MO{2} (A = Na, Li; M = Co, Ni), a model for suppression of magnetic frustration by electron doping in a nearest-neighbour antiferromagnetic triangular lattice is presented. It is found that frustration can be quantified, as determined by geometry and bond-counting, and its magnitude is a non-monotonic function of $x$. A mean-field calculation provides temperature-dependent magnetization, spin-entropy and heat capacity. Low-doping (x = 0.25, 0.33) results in a highly frustrated regime. A{0.5}MO{2} has strongest order and no frustration, while high doping (x = 0.67, 0.75) leads to low frustration and higher spin-entropy. The results agree with experiments including neutron scattering, spin entropy-driven thermoelectricity and ion ordering.

Temperature dependent Eu 3d-4f X-ray Absorption and Resonant Photoemission Study of the Valence Transition in $EuNi_2(Si_{0.2}Ge_{0.8})_2$

We study the mixed valence transition ($T$$_{v}$ $\sim$80 K) in EuNi$_{2}$(Si$_{0.2}$Ge$_{0.8}$)$_{2}$ using Eu 3$d-4f$ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RESPES). The Eu$^{2+}$ and Eu$^{3+}$ main peaks show a giant resonance and the spectral features match very well with atomic multiplet calculations. The spectra show dramatic temperature ($T$)-dependent changes over large energies ($\sim$10 eV) in RESPES and XAS. The observed non-integral mean valencies of $\sim$2.35 $\pm$ 0.03 ($T$ = 120 K) and $\sim$2.70 $\pm$ 0.03 ($T$ = 40 K) indicate homogeneous mixed valence above and below $T$$_{v}$. The redistribution between Eu$^{2+}$$4f^7$+$[spd]^0$ and Eu$^{3+}$$4f^6$+$[spd]^1$ states is attributed to a hybridization change coupled to a Kondo-like volume collapse.

Temperature dependent Luttinger surfaces

The Luttinger surface of an organic metal (TTF-TCNQ), possessing charge order and spin-charge separation, is investigated using temperature dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The Luttinger surface topology, obtained from momentum distribution curves, changes from quasi-2D(dimensional) to quasi-1D with temperature. The high temperature quasi-2D surface exhibits 4$k_F$ charge-density-wave (CDW) superstructure in the TCNQ derived holon band, in the absence of 2$k_F$ order. Decreasing temperature results in quasi-1D nested 2$k_F$ CDW order in the TCNQ spinon band and in the TTF surface. The results establish the link in momentum-space between charge order and spin-charge separation in a Luttinger liquid.

Role of CDW fluctuations on the spectral function in a metallic CDW system

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of ZrTe3 has been performed from room temperature(T) down to 6 K (across Tcdw = 63K) to study the charge-density-wave (CDW) fluctuation effects in a metallic CDW compound having Fermi surface (FS) sheets with differing dimensionality. While spectra on the 3-dimensional(D) FS show typical Fermi-Dirac function-like T-dependence, those along the quasi 1-D FS show formation of a pseudogap, starting at a much higher T than Tcdw. Simultaneously, a van-Hove singularity consisting of the quasi 1D FS intersecting the 3D FS shows increase of coherence. This demonstrates the role of CDW fluctuations on the spectral function, and relation to the dimensionality of the states, in a metallic CDW system.

Evidence for suppressed metallicity on the surface of La2-xSrxCuO4 and Nd2-xCexCuO4

Hard X-ray Photoemission spectroscopy (PES) of copper core electronic states, with a probing depth of $\sim$60 Å, is used to show that the Zhang-Rice singlet feature is present in La$_2$CuO$_4$ but is absent in Nd$_2$CuO$_4$. Hole- and electron doping in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) and Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ (NCCO) result in new well-screened features which are missing in soft X-ray PES. Impurity Anderson model calculations establish metallic screening as its origin, which is strongly suppressed within 15 $\textÅ$ of the surface. Complemented with X-ray absorption spectroscopy, the small chemical-potential shift in core levels ($\sim0.2$ eV) are shown to be consistent with modifications of valence and conduction band states spanning the band gap ($\sim1$ eV) upon hole- and electron-doping in LSCO and NCCO.

Bulk screening in core level photoemission from Mott-Hubbard and Charge-Transfer systems

We report bulk-sensitive hard X-ray ($hν$ = 5.95 KeV) core level photoemission spectroscopy (PES) of single crystal V$_{1.98}$Cr$_{0.02}$O$_{3}$ and the high-$T_c$ cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212). V$_{1.98}$Cr$_{0.02}$O$_{3}$ exhibits low binding energy "satellites" to the V $2p$ "main lines" in the metallic phase, which are suppressed in the antiferromagnetic insulator phase. In contrast, the Cu $2p$ spectra of Bi2212 do not show temperature dependent features, but a comparison with soft X-ray PES indicates a large increase in the $2p^5 3d^9$ "satellites" or $3d^9$ weight in the bulk. Cluster model calculations, including full multiplet structure and a screening channel derived from the coherent band at the Fermi energy, give very satisfactory agreement with experiments.
