Structural and Magnetic Phase Transitions in MnTe-MnSe solid solutions

Neutron diffraction studies as a function of temperature on solid solutions of MnSe and MnTe in the Se rich region are presented. Interestingly as Te is doped in MnSe, the structural transformation to NiAs phase diminishes, both in terms of \% fraction of compound as well as in terms of transition temperature. In MnTe$_{0.3}$Se$_{0.7}$, the NaCl to NiAs phase transformation occurs at about 40K and although it is present at room temperature in MnTe$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$, its volume fraction is only about 10\% of the total volume of sample. The magnetic ordering temperature of the cubic phase decreases with increasing Te content while the hexagonal phase orders at the same temperature as in MnSe. Anomalies in thermal evolution of lattice parameters at magnetic ordering as well as structural transition temperatures indicate presence of magnetostructural coupling in these compounds.

Chemical Pressure effect at the boundary of Mott insulator and itinerant electron limit of Spinel Vanadates

The chemical pressure effect on the structural, transport, magnetic and electronic properties (by measuring X-ray photoemission spectroscopy) of ZnV2O4 has been investigated by doping Mn and Co on the Zinc site of ZnV2O4. With Mn doping the V-V distance increases and with Co doping it decreases. The resistivity and thermoelectric power data indicate that as the V-V distance decreases the system moves towards Quantum Phase Transition. The transport data also indicate that the conduction is due to the small polaron hopping. The chemical pressure shows the non-monotonous behaviour of charge gap and activation energy. The XPS study also supports the observation that with decrease of the V-V separation the system moves towards Quantum Phase Transition. On the other hand when Ti is doped on the V-site of ZnV2O4 the metal-metal distance decreases and at the same time the TN also increases.

On Maximum Differential Coloring of Planar Graphs

We study the \emph{maximum differential coloring problem}, where the vertices of an $n$-vertex graph must be labeled with distinct numbers ranging from $1$ to $n$, so that the minimum absolute difference between two labels of any two adjacent vertices is maximized. As the problem is \NPH for general graphs~\cite{leung1984}, we consider planar graphs and subclasses thereof. We initially prove that the maximum differential coloring problem remains \NPH, even for planar graphs. Then, we present tight bounds for regular caterpillars and spider graphs. Using these new bounds, we prove that the Miller-Pritikin labeling scheme~\cite{miller89} for forests is optimal for regular caterpillars and for spider graphs. Finally, we describe close-to-optimal differential coloring algorithms for general caterpillars and biconnected triangle-free outer-planar graphs.

Magnetic and dielectric behavior in YMn1-xFexO3 (x less than or equal to 0.5)

The role of doping Fe on the structural, magnetic and dielectric properties of frustrated antiferromagnet YMn1-xFexO3 (x less than or equal to 0.5) has been investigated. The neutron diffraction analysis shows that the structure of these polycrystalline samples changes from hexagonal phase (space group P63cm) to orthorhombic phase (space group Pnma) for x > 0.2. The frustration parameter decreases with Fe substitution. All the compounds are antiferromagnetic and the magnetic structure is described as a mixture of Γ3 and Γ4 irreducible representation (IR) in the hexagonal phase and the ratio of these two IRs is found to vary with Fe doping (x less than or equal to 0.2). A continuous spin reorientation as a function of temperature is observed in these samples. The magnetic ground state in the orthorhombic phase of the higher doped samples (x greater than or equal to 0.3) is explained by taking Γ1 (GxCyAz) representation of Pnma setting. In YMnO3 suppression of dielectric constant ε is observed below Tn indicative of magnetoelectric coupling. This anomalous behavior reduces in Fe doped samples. The dielectric constant is found to be correlated with the magnetic moment (M) obtained from neutron diffraction experiments and follows a M^2 behavior close to Tn in agreement with Landau theory.

Magnetic and Structural properties of $MnV_{2}O_{4}$

Magnetization, neutron diffraction and X-ray diffraction of Zn doped MnV2O4 as a function of temperature have been measured and the critical exponents and magnetocaloric effect of this system have been estimated. It is observed, that with increase in Zn substitution the noncollinear orientation of Mn spins with the V spins decreases which effectively leads to the decrease of structural transition temperature more rapidly than Curie temperature. It has been shown that the obtained values of β, γ and δ from different methods match very well. These values do not belong to universal class and the values are in between the 3D Heisenberg model and mean field interaction model. The magnetization data follow the scaling equation and collapse into two branches indicating that the calculated critical exponents and critical temperature are unambiguous and intrinsic to the system. The observed double peaks in magneto-caloric curve of Mn0.95Zn0.05V2O4 is due to the strong distortion of VO6 octahedra.

Spin reorientation behavior in YMn1-xMxO3 (M = Ti, Fe, Ga; x = 0, 0.1)

The structural and magnetic properties of polycrystalline YMn1-xMxO3 (M = Ti, Fe, Ga; x = 0, 0.1) have been studied by neutron powder diffraction and magnetic measurements to probe the effect of Mn site doping on the frustration behavior and magnetic structure of these compounds. The compounds are isostructural and crystallize with hexagonal structure in P63cm space group. We find that doping with these three ions, Ti4+ (d0), Fe3+ (d5) and Ga3+ (d10), influences both the TN and magnetic structure, unlike other Mn-site dopants reported previously. The magnetic structure of YMnO3 is described by considering a linear combination of irreducible representations Γ3 and Γ4 below TN ~ 75K and with decrease in temperature the ratio of Γ3 and Γ4 changes. The mixing ratio of these two irreducible representations remains constant on lowering of temperature in the Ga doped compounds. The magnetic structure is modified on doping with nonmagnetic ion Ti4+ (d0). It is described by the basis vectors of the irreducible representation Γ2 with moment 2.3μB at 6 K. On doping with Fe3+ (d5) the magnetic structure immediately below TN is explained by considering the Γ3 irreducible representation. On further lowering of temperature, a spin reorientation at ~ 35 K is observed. Below this temperature, the magnetic structure of YMn0.9Fe0.1O3 is explained by considering Γ3 representation with 51% mixing of Γ4. The ordered moments are found to be reduced from the expected value for a Mn3+ ion in all these compounds indicating the frustrated nature of these compounds. However, the frustration parameter, f is significantly reduced in the case of Ti doped compound with Γ2 representation.

Charged lepton contributions to bimaximal and tri-bimaximal mixings for generating $\sinθ_{13}\neq 0$ and $\tan^2θ_{23}<1$

Bimaximal (BM) and tri-bimaximal (TB) mixings of neutrinos are two special cases of lepton mixing matrix, which predict the reactor angle $θ_{13}=0$ and the atmospheric angle $\tan^2θ_{23}=1$. Recent precision measurements and global analysis of oscillation parameters, have confirmed a non-vanishing value of $θ_{13}$ as well as deviations of $θ_{12}$ and $θ_{23}$ from their maximal values predicted by BM or TB mixing. In this work we mainly concentrate on $θ_{13}$ and $θ_{23}$ to assign $\sinθ_{13}\neq 0$ and $\tan^2θ_{23}<1$ with the help of charged lepton corrections defined by $U_{PMNS}=U^{\dagger}_lU_ν$. We first consider $U_ν$ to be given separately by BM and TB mixing matrices and then find the possible forms of $U_l}$ such that the elements of PMNS matrix, finally yield $\sinθ_{13}\neq 0$ and $\tan^2θ_{23}<1$. To compute the values of mixing angles we assume the charged lepton correction to be of CKM-like. All the mixing matrices considered here satisfy the unitarity condition to leading order of expansion parameters. We also analyze both the mixing schemes in presence of Dirac CP phase and find expressions for the rephasing invariant quantity $J_{CP}$ which have been discussed in recent literature.

Measurement of the W boson helicity in top quark decays using 5.4 fb^-1 of ppbar collision data

We present a measurement of the helicity of the W boson produced in top quark decays using ttbar decays in the l+jets and dilepton final states selected from a sample of 5.4 fb^-1 of collisions recorded using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron ppbar collider. We measure the fractions of longitudinal and right-handed W bosons to be f_0 = 0.669 +- 0.102 [ +- 0.078 (stat.) +- 0.065 (syst.)] and f_+ = 0.023 +- 0.053 [+- 0.041 (stat.) +- 0.034 (syst.)], respectively. This result is consistent at the 98% level with the standard model. A measurement with f_0 fixed to the value from the standard model yields f_+ = 0.010 +- 0.037 [+- 0.022 (stat.) +- 0.030 (syst.) ].

Measurement of the differential cross section dσ/dt in elastic $p\bar{p}$ scattering at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV

We present a measurement of the elastic differential cross section $dσ(p\bar{p}\rightarrow p\bar{p})/dt$ as a function of the four-momentum-transfer squared t. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $\approx 31 nb^{-1}$ collected with the D0 detector using dedicated Tevatron $p\bar{p} $ Collider operating conditions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV and covers the range $0.26 <|t|< 1.2 GeV^2$. For $|t|<0.6 GeV^2$, dσ/dt is described by an exponential function of the form $Ae^{-b|t|}$ with a slope parameter $ b = 16.86 \pm 0.10(stat) \pm 0.20(syst) GeV^{-2}$. A change in slope is observed at $|t| \approx 0.6 GeV^2$, followed by a more gradual |t| dependence with increasing values of |t|.

Search for pair production of the scalar top quark in muon+tau final states

We present a search for the pair production of scalar top quarks ($\tilde{t}_{1}$), the lightest supersymmetric partners of the top quarks, in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of {7.3 $fb^{-1}$} collected with the \dzero experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Each scalar top quark is assumed to decay into a $b$ quark, a charged lepton, and a scalar neutrino ($\tildeν$). We investigate final states arising from $\tilde{t}_{1} \bar{\tilde{t}_{1}} \rightarrow b\bar{b}μτ\tildeν \tildeν$ and $\tilde{t}_{1} \bar{\tilde{t}_{1}} \rightarrow b\bar{b}ττ\tildeν \tildeν$. With no significant excess of events observed above the background expected from the standard model, we set exclusion limits on this production process in the ($m_{\tilde{t}_{1}}$,$m_{\tildeν}$) plane.

Precise measurement of the top quark mass in the dilepton channel at D0

We measure the top quark mass (mt) in ppbar collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV using dilepton ttbar->W+bW-bbar->l+nubl-nubarbbar events, where l denotes an electron, a muon, or a tau that decays leptonically. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb-1 collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We obtain mt = 174.0 +- 1.8(stat) +- 2.4(syst) GeV, which is in agreement with the current world average mt = 173.3 +- 1.1 GeV. This is currently the most precise measurement of mt in the dilepton channel.

Influence of B - site Disorder in $La_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}Mn_{1-x}B_{x}O_{3}$ (B = Fe, Ru, Al and Ga) Manganites

We have investigated the influence of B - site doping on the crystal and magnetic structure in $La_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}Mn_{1-x}B_{x}O_{3}$ (B= Fe, Ru, Al and Ga) compounds using neutron diffraction, SANS, magnetization and resistivity techniques. The B - site doped samples are isostructural and possess an orthorhombic structure in \textit{Pnma} space group at 300K. A structural transition from orthorhombic to monoclinic is found to precede the magnetic transition to CE - type antiferromagnetic state in few of these samples. On doping with Fe, charge and orbitally ordered CE - type antiferromagnetic state is suppressed, followed by the growth in ferromagnetic insulating phase in $0.02\leq x\leq0.06$ compounds. At higher Fe doping in $x>0.06$, the ferromagnetic state is also suppressed and no evidence of long range magnetic ordering is observed. In Ru doped samples $(0.01\leq x\leq0.05)$, the ferromagnetic metallic state is favored at $T{}_{C}\approx200K$ and $T_{MI}\approx125K$ and no significant change in $T_{C}$ and $T_{MI}$ as a function of Ru doping is found. In contrast, with non magnetic Al substitution for $0.01\leq x\leq0.03$, the charge ordered CE - type antiferromagnetic state coexists with the ferromagnetic metallic phase. With further increase in Al doping $(0.05\leq x\leq0.07)$, both CE - type antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases are gradually suppressed. This behavior is accompanied by the evolution of A - type antiferromagnetic insulating state. Eventually, at higher Al doping $(0.10\leq x\leq0.13)$, this phase is also suppressed and signature of spin glass like transition are evident in M(T). Likewise, substitution with Ga is observed to induce similar effects as described for Al doped samples. The presence of short ranged ferromagnetic ordering has been further explored using SANS measurements in few of the selected samples.

Aharonov-Bohm effect in a Class of Noncommutative Theories

The Aharonov-Bohm effect including spin-noncommutative effects is considered. At linear order in $θ$, the magnetic field is gauge invariant although spatially strongly anisotropic. Despite this anisotropy, the Schrödinger-Pauli equation is separable through successive unitary transformations and the exact solution is found. The scattering amplitude is calculated and compared with the usual case. In the noncommutative Aharonov-Bohm case the differential cross section is independent of $θ$.

Infrared absorption study of charge ordered $La{}_{0.5}Ca{}_{0.5-x}Sr_{x}MnO_{3}$ $(0.1\leq x\leq0.5$

Infrared absorption study has been carried out on a series of half doped manganites, $La_{0.5}Ca_{0.5-x}Sr_{x}MnO_{3}$ $(0.1\leq x\leq0.5)$, with varying magnetic ground state. The charge ordering transition observed in samples with {\normalsize $x\leq0.3$ is accompanied by a mode at $\sim525cm^{-1}$ in addition to the stretching mode at $615cm^{-1}$ and bending mode at $400cm^{-1}$. Phonon hardening is found to occur below the CE - type antiferromagnetic ordering temperature. The value of the insulating gap decreases on doping with Sr from $727cm^{-1}$ to $615cm^{-1}.$}

Magnetic, magnetocaloric and neutron diffraction studies on TbNi5-xMx (M = Co and Fe) compounds

The effect of substitution of Co and Fe for Ni in TbNi5 on the structural, magnetic and magneto-thermal properties has been investigated. Considerable enhancement of Curie temperature is observed with Fe substitution, whereas the increase is nominal in the case of Co. Neutron diffraction measurements reveal the redistribution of moments and site preference of substitutional ions in Ni 2c and 3g sites. In TbNi4Fe, both Ni and Fe as well as Tb are found to carry moment while in the case of TbNi4Co, mainly Tb carries the moment. Magnetocaloric behavior has been investigated from the magnetization and the heat capacity measurements. The magnetic and magnetocaloric properties are found to be strongly correlated in these compounds.

Structure, Transport and Magnetic properties in La$_{2x}$Sr$_{2-2x}$Co$_{2x}$Ru$_{2-2x}$O$_{6}$

The perovskite solid solutions of the type La$_{2x}$Sr$_{2-2x}$Co$_{2x}$Ru$_{2-2x}$O$_{6}$ with 0.25 $\leq$ x $ \leq $ 0.75 have been investigated for their structural, magnetic and transport properties. All the compounds crystallize in double perovskite structure. The magnetization measurements indicate a complex magnetic ground state with strong competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. Resistivity of the compounds is in confirmation with hopping conduction behaviour though differences are noted especially for $x$ = 0.4 and 0.6. Most importantly, low field (50Oe) magnetization measurements display negative magnetization during the zero field cooled cycle. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements indicate presence of Co$^{2+}$/Co$^{3+}$ and Ru$^{4+}$/Ru$^{5+}$ redox couples in all compositions except $x$ = 0.5. Presence of magnetic ions like Ru$^{4+}$ and Co$^{3+}$ gives rise to additional ferromagnetic (Ru-rich) and antiferromagnetic sublattices and also explains the observed negative magnetization.

Effect of B-site Dopants on Magnetic and Transport Properties of LaSrCoRuO$_6$

Effect of Co, Ru and Cu substitution at B and B' sites on the magnetic and transport properties of LaSrCoRuO$_6$ have been investigated. All the doped compositions crystallize in the monoclinic structure in the space group $P2_1/n$ indicating a double perovskite structure. While the magnetization and conductivity increase in Co and Ru doped compounds, antiferromagnetism is seen to strengthen in the Cu doped samples. These results are explained on the basis of a competition between linear Co-O-Ru-O-Co and perpendicular Co-O-O-Co antiferromagnetic interactions and due to formation of Ru-O-Ru ferromagnetic networks.

The Structural and Magnetic ordering in $La{}_{0.5-x}Nd_{x}Ca_{0.5}MnO_{3}$ (0.1 \ensuremath{\le} x \ensuremath{\le} 0.5) Manganites

The crystal and magnetic structure of polycrystalline $La{}_{0.5-x}Nd{}_{x}Ca_{0.5}MnO{}_{3}$ (0.0 \ensuremath{\le} x \ensuremath{\le} 0.5) samples have been investigated using magnetization, resistivity, transmission electron microscope, and neutron diffraction techniques. The samples are isostructural and possess orthorhombic structure in \textit{Pnma} space group. On lowering of temperature, the samples exhibit CE - type antiferromagnetic structure coexisting with a weak ferromagnetic ordering. The charge and orbitally ordered antiferromagnetic phase is weakened by the growth of ferromagnetic phase. The evolution of structural distortions and magnetic structure at low temperature as a function of Nd doping exhibit a strong correlation with A - site disorder ($σ^{2}$).
